I currently have a Xbox which I love, but the lack of RPG's is a killer. I love RPG's but don't want to go out and spend a ton of money on a PS2 and some new games, I would rather go old school, I'm thinking PS1 or SNES. However I want a system that has good rpgs, and a system that will actually have games I'll be able to find. I've played a few RPGS for PS1 like FF7, and 8, but that's about it, so I'm open to suggestions on systems other than the SNES or PS1, and it would be nice if you could suggest some games, thank you in advance for your recommendations!

You can't beat the Square RPG's on the snes. I've never played a PS1, but i think alot of the Square snes RPG's were ported over to the PS1.

if you're going to get a ps1, you might as well get a ps2, since you can play all the ps1 games there. just more options for yourself. snes has a lot of good rpgs but they're not cheap, ps1 games are cheaper most of the time.

I would say SNES. If you are looking for RPGs there is no better system for them and SNES Carts are not hard to find, a bit pricey at times but not that hard to find.

I would go with the ps only because their games are more readily accessible. You would be hard pressed to find any cheap, good SNES games in store.

What are some of the good RPGS on SNES? I know Chrono Trigger, but that's a lot of dough, and FF3 also.

Antoher question (sorry I have a lot) is star ocean for PS1 any good?

super mario rpg is very fun. earthbound. illusion of gaia. soul blazer. 7th saga. etc.

if you want cheap, go ps1

you have all the final fantasies and chrono trigger and most can be found for under $20 as opposed to trying to find high priced carts with save batteries that are bound to fail one of these years

hell, go ps2 if you can afford to drop the extra benji on the system
Was there a Ninja Gaiden for SNES?
There is Ninja Gaiden Trilogy - basically it's the graphical update of the NES series all on 1 cart. Great game, fairly sought after, often times a little expensive.

As far as Star Ocean for PSX, I thought it was a very fun underrated RPG for it's time.

For RPGs nothing will deliver more than a PS2. In addition to all the native PS2 titles there is the entire PS1 library, and on top of that many major SNES RPGs have been released on the PS1 like Chrono Trigger, most of the Final Fantasy series, etc.

If RPGs are a priority there really is no competition to the range available on PS2.

Oh man I'm sold on the PS1 now, but what is FF3 on?
Final Fantasy Anthology I think?
Depends which FF 3 you mean. The Japanese FF 3 was never released in the US. Our FF 3 is Japan's FF 6. This has been released under the proper numbering along with FF 5 on PS1.

Actually, the Gameboy Advance would be a good choice. It has old-school 2D RPG games...

Golden Sun
Golden Sun 2
Phantasy Star Collection
Legend of Mana
Zelda
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Breath of Fire 2
Lufia
Lunar
Plus Final Fantasy 1 and 2 should be coming out.

Plus more I haven't mentioned.

You should be able to find most fairly easily.

Final Fantasy III was only released in Japan for the NES/Famicom. But I think you might mean Final Fantasy VI, which was called Final Fantasy III when released on the snes in the US, and called Final Fantasy VI when released on the snes in Japan and PS1 in the US.
If you get the PS2 you can play all the older PS1 games.
Yeah but I'd rather just get the PS1 for 19 dollars and call it good
Hmm never thought about the GB
OTOH, some of those GBA games are on the PS2 (Phantasy Star Trilogy) or are cut down versions of PS1 games (Lunar)

Realistically, every platform worth mentioning has exclusive RPGs to offer but if you must choose just one it is simply impossible to beat the reach of the PS2. If you compiled a list of all the RPGs available to run on all the platforms since the NES the PS2 section will dwarf all of the others, especially since it includes the PS1's titles.

Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana (thats a game right? :)) The Zelda game that is on SNES and Shadowrun is a great game. I second 7th Saga

All for the SNES

After all of this talking I need an SNES :) Is there any cheap deals on these anywhere?

I personally prefer the SNES, but they both have a lot of great RPGs on them...

SNES:
Chrono Trigger
FF2 (Japan: FF4)
FF3 (Japan: FF6)
Super Mario RPG
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Earthbound

PSX:
The first three SNES RPGs there are ported over (not very well, but they were ported over).
FF5 (first release here)
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II
FFVII
FFVIII
FFIX
Xenogears

This list is misiing a lot of choices, but either way you're picking up great games.

PS2 may be the best choice now, but I have no idea where to get one cheap...

Dude, your avatar gave that away! :)

All this talk of SNES is making me want to fire mine up tonight.
Anyone know if the ports from SNES to PS1 are any good?
In my experience they were just fine. Except for the occasional FMV it can be easy to forget you aren't playing on a SNES.

How bout a gameboy advance. It has rpgs like Mario and Luigi, the upcoming Final Fantasy i&ii, sword of mana, and lunar legends.

Really you just need to compare what's exclusive for each and if you want to go beyond just the Final Fantasy series for your RPGs:

SNES:
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Earthbound
SUPER MARIO RPG!!!
Breath of Fire 2

PS:
Xenogears
Chrono Cross

I'm not really big on the PS series of RPGs so I may be a little biased and I'm sure others will fill in the gaps, but personally I think the variety on SNES is much more favorable than PS. Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, and Breath of Fire 2 are probably some of my most favorite RPGs ever.

The port of FF4 is amazing. The ports of FF5 and FF6 have some really annoying load times, but you get used to them. The port of Chrono Trigger has completely unacceptable load times that almost kill the experience, but since the game is just so damn good, you can live with them if that's the only way you can play the game.
