Wario Land Shake... is 2D!! IGN Review 8.4

Actually, all console/portable games should be $30 or less regardless of platform. $60 is just ludicrous. $50 is only slightly better. No game is worth more than $30, IMHO. Still, this game looks great and it would be hard to resist. My kids are getting a Wii this xmas and I know they'd like this, as would I, so it's likely to be under the tree too, whether $50 or $30. I'll just be a bit pissed that I had to spend such a ridiculous amount for a game. I'm getting use to, in fact, 99 cent games on my iPod Touch. That seems about the right price for any game. ;^)

I'll be grabbing it unless some crazy deal has me jumping on another game in the next week instead (i.e. Friday Gold Box deals). Hard to say no to 2D platformers, especially starring Wario. I doubt it'll be worth $50, but oh well. Worse ways to spend it.

For one, its a Nintendo game so I doubt it'll be dropping down to $30 anytime soon.

That said, I think I may still try and wait until some store has some deal going along before I pick this up. I haven't played Wario before, but I really want to support Nintendo's efforts in this title because it looks fantastic and I want it to be successful enough for the possibility of more 2D platformers in this vein.

man I'm mad hype for this game!!

I hella look forward to RENTING it!!

pay $7, beat that shyt in a week, true school cheap ass style!!

I feel you there. I at least want to rent it... I bought the last wario world and it was super short, fun but way too short.

I'm still torn between getting this, Madden, Force Unleashed, Samba, and whatever Amazon may be offering on Friday. There's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much Wii stuff coming down the pipe for me...

--R.J.

I'd say wait for Samba. That WILL go down in price..as will the Force. Even Madden!..These Nintendo games RARELY drop and RARELY go on sale.. :wall:

Hopefully its like the old Wario Land games. Wario Land 3 and Wario Land 4 were great. I think its a great idea they went with 2D for the game. The last 3D Wario game was horrible (Wario World for Gamecube).

What I've read of the game so far definitely makes me believe it's set up more or less like Wario Land 4, which should be good. I definitely preferred WL3 over WL4, but 4 was still a good game.

Whoa, Amazon shipped the game to me already. Usually amazon doesn't ship pre-order games out early--especially if I choose the Free Standard Ship method--I thought it was coming out next week or end of month?

Do you have Prime/picked the release date delivery? Since there aren't any deals for it, I guess I'll just be buying it at EB with gift cards.

No I don't have Prime or Release Date delivery since I'm in Hawaii.

I guess the game is on soft launch for this Sunday or Monday, and I won't get the game until maybe end of next week if I'm lucky, so I'm sure there'll be some other impressions posted before I even get a chance to crack it open. :p

7.5 Presentation
Slick hand-drawn cinemas and simple menus. Not a lot of different options or game modes. Faked widescreen is annoying.

8.0 Graphics
Gorgeous hand-drawn characters, environments and animations. Lots of style and plenty of variety. Gameplay is constrained to 4:3 presentation.

7.0 Sound
An orchestral soundtrack would've been nice. Sound effects, particularly the grunts from Wario, are amusing.

8.5 Gameplay
Really fun. Excellent control and some exceptional linear level designs. It's all enjoyable, but reaching the end is not difficult, save for a couple tricky boss fights.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
The core game can be finished in about five hours, but a bevy of secondary challenges (per level) will separate the men from the boys. Kind of like going for 60 or 120 stars in a Mario title.

8.4
Impressive OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

I knew the game was gonna be awesome but still... worth $50???

Mario Galaxy was awesome... then I sold that shyt once I beat it... so I'm still renting this game only!

I cannot wait to get this game... on deal. Seriously, it looks amazingly beautiful, I love love love Warioland 2 and 3 (really disappointed in 4, but what can you do), but I wouldn't be surprised if this drops in price or goes DotD to 30 or 40 within a couple months.

Why is it everything with you has to be good and long, Lilboo? Why?

It's 5 hours for the main stuff. I'm guessing doing all the challenges or whatever is present in the game will take on another 10. Still not very lengthy, but this is old skool 2D awesomeness, and frankly I'm quite sad that I've watched one of my favorite genres fall into obscurity in favor of mishmash cookie cutter replicas.

I know! I mean I'm sure this game is going to be awesome. Really. But theycould have made it widescreen. I mean, really now!

I would have preferred this to be a $10, MAYBE $15 WiiWare game.

i think i'll wait till i can get this at $40 somewhere. but i am definitely looking forward to playing it.

Oh ffs stop it already.

Do you people honestly equate this game to something like SPOGS racing? It wouldn't have gotten near the amount of money or attention to detail that's going to be readily apparent upon playing the game were it to be a budget release. Nintendo is frugal - they wouldn't have sprung for hand painted artwork, fluid animation, or even wasted the time to use a recognizable character.

It's going to be an awesome 2D platformer with amazing animation done by one of the top quality arthouses over in Japan. It's a franchise/mascot character with well designed levels and lots of stuff for the hardcore gamer (who, sadly, is probably going to scoff at this sort of thing, which makes me wretch).

You people are throwing fits and saying nonsense things simply because it is 2D and doesn't have a lot of buzzwords to go along with advertising, and that's pretty pathetic.

It's like saying things that are the same physical size should cost the same because "they can both fit in my glove compartment."

There are some valid complaints about length, but it's not as if those complaints can't be made about numerous other games that are generally intended to be replayed. Not that I expect this to be of the same quality as SMB, but it's not as if those were long games.

I don't mind shorter games, especially if there's some kind of replay value. I got gold box discount and credit on amazon, so it's all good for me.
5 hours? Come the fuck on. WHEN can we get a GOOD + LONG Wii game?! :wall:
If it's 5 hours I think I'll wait until I can get it for around $30.

Looks good. If you say "2D platformer with tight, original controls," you've said enough to get my cash.

Only a few drawbacks on this one, and none of them will prevent me from taking it around the block:

#1 is Wario--I just don't care for evil Mario and don't see what the eff is wrong with Bowser as the main char in a 2D platformer.

#2 is the price. Won't even think about this one until it's in the twenties, so it might be a while.

#3 is the presence of punctuation in the title. If we're including punctuation in titles, why isn't it "Wii Music!!!"? If any title deserves punctuation, it's the future Game of the Decade.

Have you guys seen this anywhere? I noticed that some places are saying the release date is today. Others are saying it's the 29th.

I don't mind it being a 2D platormer, but I do mind a 5 hour main-story play through. That was the big turn off for force unleashed (which shouldnt have been over 44.99) as well, especially on current gen systems. Quest for booty was about a 3-4 hour playtime for 15$. *shrug*

Between Amazon and Gamefly I'll almost certainly be able to get it for $30 within six months to a year. Since I'm not a very big Wario fan in the first place I can wait.

Sitting on the desk at my local Gamestop this afternoon fresh off the truck....

I thought it released today..
Zelda should be 20 bucks these days. It dropped to 20 back in the early part of the Summer or so at Walmart
please show me where.. and I'll buy it..

Makes me wish I had kept my receipt. Its very likely YMMV, with my copy coming from a Wetumpka, Alabama walmart. They tossed them in the $20 bin with all the other games at the time. I figured it was a mistake, but it rang up legit. There were likely 16 copies at the time, all gone the next time I was in there. Makes me wish I scooped up more than one, as I might have been able to flip them quite easily.

Walmart.com shows full price...shame too.

I'll keep my eyes peeled and if I spot another copy locally, I will PM you.

Enjoyed my first 15 minutes with it. Looks like the 5 hour mark is about right. I'll get some impressions out when I get through the first area.

Easy so far, and animation is fuck awesome.
