Lots of ass kissing.
I hate to say it, but I think Scrubking is right. I once tried to get a job at a record store, and I was asked what kind of music I listened to.... I told the truth ... (Zeppelin, Doors, Boston and this was in the early 90's) needless to say I didn't get the job.
IMO, The best thing is to like the "mainstream" and when asked why you like that, give some kind of "mainstream" answer.
One of the questions I remember in particular was "If you see someone thinking about buying so-and-so, how would you convince them to buy something else (more mainstream)?" I don't remember the name of the place now, it wasn't Specs, RecordTown? Or something like that?
As much as I know/knew about music I thought I had the job without a doubt. Unfortunately, I didn't.
My advice is go totally mainstream, no matter your knowledge ... but at the same time don't forget your appreciation for the "sleeper" titles. IOW, go all out for Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Ninja Gaiden, all of the heavy hitters ........ and find a million reasons why you like them, and why they are better than other games out there. But at the same time, don't forget what you already know about other "lesser-known" titles.
Sorry, but sometimes you gotta be UNtruthful, even to get a job.
Most important: Don't forget to kiss ass!
