What do employers look for?

gamefreak

CAGiversary!
Just wondering what technology based employers (i.e. GameStop, Bestbuy) look for in part-time employees (and yes this would be my first job). Any advice?

Muchos thanks!

Well, based on personal experience with each of these stores and their employees....

Your best bet would be to know as little about video games as possible - and what you do know is completely fabricated or modified via a "telephone" type of listening game. Make sure to keep the customers informed on things you don't have a clue about, like the "new Ps3 released in Japan" (PSX in actuality).

Stuff like that, I imagine.

From what it seems like they have to be pushy, not too smelly, low attention spans, know alot about anime and nothing else. Be willing to work for minimal wages, work stupid hours.........

As far as I can tell they're not looking for any specific things besides filling up open slots and whether you'll work the hours that they need filled.

you should be commited, confident and knowledgeable in the industry.. self image is a plus.

Lots of ass kissing.

My bro was at an interview a while back and this other guy starting talking to the employer about fishing and they hit it off and guess what - he got the job.

be clean and dress well. Id say khakis pants and a long sleeve button-up collared shirt, tie or not.

dont be a douche-bag through any facet of the hiring process.

reflect the image of a responsible courteous dependable individual.

good luck.

I hate to say it, but I think Scrubking is right. I once tried to get a job at a record store, and I was asked what kind of music I listened to.... I told the truth ... (Zeppelin, Doors, Boston and this was in the early 90's) needless to say I didn't get the job.

IMO, The best thing is to like the "mainstream" and when asked why you like that, give some kind of "mainstream" answer.

One of the questions I remember in particular was "If you see someone thinking about buying so-and-so, how would you convince them to buy something else (more mainstream)?" I don't remember the name of the place now, it wasn't Specs, RecordTown? Or something like that?

As much as I know/knew about music I thought I had the job without a doubt. Unfortunately, I didn't.

My advice is go totally mainstream, no matter your knowledge ... but at the same time don't forget your appreciation for the "sleeper" titles. IOW, go all out for Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Ninja Gaiden, all of the heavy hitters ........ and find a million reasons why you like them, and why they are better than other games out there. But at the same time, don't forget what you already know about other "lesser-known" titles.

Sorry, but sometimes you gotta be UNtruthful, even to get a job.

Most important: Don't forget to kiss ass!
Be sure to ask what their drug policy is and what the inter office dating policy is..... good luck.
Or you just live by a couple of good hard and fast rules...
1. In regards to drugs... everwhere has zero tolerance now... if you want to use drugs, get ready to work a series of menial jobs.
2. In regards to dating... Don't crap where you eat. Very little good can come of dating someone in the office.

Just have a basic knowledge of popular games. Try to find out what the store pushes (IE: PS2 - talk up how great PS2 is).

Dress smartly.

Look straight into eyes.

Don't come off as an ass.

you really have to judge your audience. i work at a record store, and if you came in saying you only like mainstream stuff there's no way you would get the job.

unless you are an attractive girl. hot girls get jobs easier.

first, tend to the application. if it's a part time job, the application is going to be what makes them care or not. so, even though it seems obvious, often times i see people turn in applications with sloppy writing, misspelled words, sections left blank, and just filling the thing out incorrectly. if the application has a "special skills" section or something similar, try hard to fill it up. one of the main reasons they hired me was because i put "i'm good at math, i take advanced classes" on it. so, embellish a bit or a lot, anything to help.

of course you have to look nice if you get an interview, and although that should also go without saying, many people ignore this.

if i were you, i would do anything and everything within your power to get a job at some sort of independant store, no matter what they sell. when you deal with corporate stores, they have corporate rules, and a lot of them don't make sense. independant stores are more likely to not have dress codes and have more flexible rules, since there is no coporate office to report to. at least that's how it is in my experience.

just because they sell tvs or video games doesn't mean they care if you know about those things. you can learn about those topics, but the abilty to annoy a customer to the point where they will purchase whatever you say just to get the hell away from you is a god given talent.

I figured since it's something I like it would be a better overall job. There's really no independant stores around here so that's not really an option. No drugs and I dress fairly nice (mostly jeans or khackis and button up shirts). Another plus is that I goto a math and science magnet school.

Thanks for the tips guys!

This is kinda funny to me. I work in the kitchen of a resturant. Pretty much about every other male worker there does drugs. The employers know this, and still dont do anything. I'm planning to quit as soon as I can find another job.

And about dating, my girlfriend is also a co-worker of mine. We only work 1 day a week together, but its the best part of work.
