What do you think is the best TV show of all time?

Futurama is great, Sports Night is great, the Sorkin years of West Wing are all great. And yes the little bit of Dexter I have seen is great.
...carneival
Excellent, I didn't think anyone would mention my favorite show.

Carnivale was the best - there were so many inside occult references, but I thought that even if you watched it at a shallow level it was still entertaining.

Before the beginning, after the great war between Heaven and Hell, God created the Earth and gave dominion over it to the crafty ape he called man. And to each generation was born a creature of light and a creature of darkness. And great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between good and evil. There was magic then, nobility, and unimaginable cruelty. And so it was until the day that a false sun exploded over Trinity, and man forever traded away wonder for reason.

Just fucking epic, man.
The X-Files
QFT. The X-Files will forever be my show, but I also think MST3K is an excellent choice. Of currently running shows, I'd have to go with House. Bloody brilliant. (Bad pun very much intended.)

The most influential and probably best show of all time was Toast of the Town / the Ed Sullivan show. It was a major factor in shaping the culture for decades, as was American Bandstand with Dick Clark to a lesser extent. The Ed Sullivan show is untouchable as the biggest show in television history.

Other heavily influential shows that come to mind which heavily shaped their respective genres and could be contenders are The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, Sixty Minutes, Cheers, M*A*S*H, Newhart, Perry Mason, Dallas, General Hospital, Quincy, Kojak, ER, Hill Street Blues, The Cosby Show, The Shield, The Sopranos, and Dragnet (in no particular order).

EDIT: I also neglected to mention (shamefully) Seinfeld and All in the Family
M*A*S*H and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire
I was going through a MASH phase these past couple of months, but I'm sort of tired of it for now. Great Serie.

My top picks are: 24, Star Trek DS9, M*A*S*H

Simpsons. The ones that weren't so funny are funnier as repeats.

I've got The Wire in my Blockbuster queue, and I hope it will be good.

Also, The Office get an honorable mention, just because I never thought after seeing all of the British series that an American counterpart could be funny. It is. It is a great show. Funny, ridiculous, uncomfortable, and touching all within an episode.
For me I think I might have to give it to the Twilight Zone (original, not the remakes). Man, for a show from 1961 it's pretty mind-blowing in the stories they told. Sure the special effects suck compared to now, but that show had SUCH imagination!
I'm with you.

In my mind, The Twilight Zone will always be the be all and end all of television.

My top 5 list would be

1) Twilight Zone
2) Spaced
3) 3rd Rock From The Sun
4) Mission Hill
5) House

I would say that Law and Order isone of the best in terms of consistency and popularity. Personal favs from recenter stuff are Angel, Prison Break, Heroes, Weeds and Dexter. I like Showtime shows better than HBO, I've really gotten into Dexter and Weeds.

Seinfeld is awesome, because Larry Davis is... a comic genius. How can you not like the show? It's hilarious. Curb your Enthusiasm is also a great show, but not best ever...

The Simpsons. I liked it as a child, I liked it as a teenager and I liked it as an adult. When you can like a show at any age, you know it's something special. Just a fantastic show.

Married with Children. This might be my favorite of them all. The show went downhill in the later seasons (Sevin was stupid, they really crossed the line in later episodes with how far-fetched things started to get, etc)... but still, the show is just hilarious. Fantastic satire on life.

Another vote for Futurama.

The rest of my Top 10 (not in order, yet):
The Simpsons
Arrested Development
My Name is Earl
Seinfeld
Adventures of Brisco County Jr
Andy Richter Controls the Universe
Firefly
The Critic
Newsradio

yeah its definelty an underrated and mostly unknown show due to the subject matter and its limited run on hbo. sucks too because i didnt learn about it till i got on demand cable and i saw them on hbo and started to watch all the reruns they had on their server. i still wish theyd go back and give the show another chance becuase it was slow to start much like deadwood which is why so many people probably never gave it a chance.

but man the show all the characters and the setting of it during the depression was awesome. i heard the guy who created the show is still planning on releasing the rest of the story in book form so anyone interested could see how the story ended but i havent heard much else about it. i think itd make for a cool comic book though .

I honestly cannot believe nobody has mentioned "The Andy Griffith Show." That show is great, even after Don Knotts leaves. My wife and I have been through the DVDs, and I can't get over how great of a show that actually was. If you don't need sex jokes or violence to be entertained, give it a watch. It's phenomenal.

I think my top 3 are Andy Griffith Show, Seinfeld, and The Office. I've watched every episode of Seinfeld about 100 times, and yet I still look forward to watching them.

Man, it is an incredibly difficult task to pick what I consider the best shows.

Cartoon would be between King of the Hill, Daria, Invader Zim, and Simpsons. If you take the best of Simpsons, it almost trumps everything out there, but the same could be said for King of the Hill. Daria and Invader Zim are much more concentrated, and thus longevity has to be taken into account. Honorable mentions go to Futurama, The Maxx, Spongebob Squarepants, and the Critic.

Sitcoms are between Seinfeld, The Office (American), and the Wonder Years, assuming Wonder Years counts as a sitcom (since it really isn't one).

I don't really watch anything else, as I'm not a fan of drama (it normally comes off as cheesy to me), reality tv (ugh), or gameshows. In this nebulous category, I will say that Alton Brown kicks a motherload of ass, and in the realm of cooking shows reigns supreme.

If I had to pick one to watch forever, thereby making it the best, it might have to go to Simpsons. There's a good 6-7 seasons of pure genius, and I can't say the same for every other show. But even then, I think I could say the same for Invader Zim, as it edges out things like King of the Hill with some amazing animation and some brilliant characters.

Very difficult question. I'm probably forgetting some shows also.
