And do they still do it? I cant remember which one of the big three did this was it Staples, Office Max, or Office Depot? I need to pick up some new ink for my printer and have like 4-5 empty cartridges lying around. And wanted to know which one gave out those $3.00 off per cartridge coupons so I could save a few bucks on the printer ink I needed to buy.

Its Staples:

Ink and Toner Cartridges

In 2006, Staples recycled more than 17 million cartridges in the U.S. through our various ink and toner cartridge recycling programs. We offer a $3 coupon toward a future purchase of ink or toner when HP, Lexmark™ or Dell cartridges are returned to our retail stores for recycling. We also offer two other programs to make it easy for our customers to recycle empty ink and toner cartridges:
 • Our Recycle for Education program enables customers to support local schools by donating their used cartridges. Participating schools receive $3 for each eligible cartridge received. Staples has donated more than $3 million to local schools and educational organizations since the program's inception in 2003.
 • We launched our InkDropSM service in 2005. When a cartridge runs out, customers simply drop a new one in the printer and mail us the empty using the prepaid shipping materials. We send a replacement automatically, and all shipping is free.

The official thing makes it seem like you have to give your old ones in and you get a coupon. I go in and give them the limit of 3 carts and save $9. Staples is great.

The whole point of these programs are to gain some income back when they send them to companies to refill. Epson, Brother, many Canon carts can't be refilled.

Generally you can only get credit from these companies if they have a print head on them those brands tend to not have them.

Epson to top it off has a chip that keeps track of ink levels so you can't even try to refill them. Awesome. There should be some ongoing litigation about that.
Unfortunately, Staples cartridges are also more expensive.
They stopped taking it in about 2-3 years ago when I switch over to Epson photo printers.

I'm pretty sure all 3 of those stores in the OP do it. At my local Office Max, the girls working usually tosses them in some bin and scans something to give me the discount.

That's why my PoS Epson is sitting in the corner. At first I thought it was broken, so I emailed them, and got something along the lines of "it's your fault, LOL TS for buying cheap refills, now go spend the $60 on ours like you were supposed to in the first place"

I don't know whether to sell it or go Office Space on it.

Apparently, Lexmark has something similar. I just refilled my black ink today at Walgreens and it's now saying my warranty is void.

Whatever...the damn printer was only $30 on clearance anyways.

Thats why i buy generic ink, and no it hasn't hurt anything at all. I've had this epson r200 for years now and it works fine on the generic stuff.
