Whatever happened to 2D games?

I think its really hard to be innovative with 2D these days. Some games can get away with it, Viewtiful Joe comes to mind. But like the Mega Man X series there's only so much you can do with it really before it gets boring. I look at the situation like art history - An artist starts doing cubism, and everyone follows. Then someone does abstract or impressionalism which is then copied by everyone else. It goes on and on. I guess these days the art motif is cel-shading.

Ahhh the never ending battle of 2D VS. 3D.... I personaly prefer 2D to the 3D games, and this is probably the reason I don't play as many videogames as I use to. It seems like 2D games are becoming extinct in recent years, with a few exceptions, mainly gameboy. If 3D is what is selling it doesn't matter how many fan boys are yelling at the top of their lungs... that is what manufacturers are going to make. There are some great 3D games that are amazing, like Zelda and the Virtua Fighter series. But Damnit!!! I miss busting out my damn Hadoken!!

way to drag up a thread only to say something thats already been said ^^

2 more words. Or at least a company name and abbreviation:

Nintendo DS
The system will seemingly focus on 2D as well as 3D, utilizing the ARM 7 processor for this function.
No matter what the state of the industry, it seems Nintendo will be pushing 2D games. I don't think 2D is ever going to become obsolete.

A lot more 2D games should be made for these consoles in my opinion. The whole feel of 2D games will never go away. The gameplay, the fun, the music, it's just a great deal to have. I'm not dissing 3D games, but don't most of these 3D games feel dark to you? I mean even a game like Castelvania, which is a game full of vampires and stuff, gave you a lively feeling while you're playing it. 2D games just rule!!!!
The last two games I beat are 2D.

Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission.
That's all I play. I haven't played my PS2 in over a year. I play my emulators(Mame, Snes9x, Gens, Dega, Jnes, all of those).

I'm actually going to start a company that solely makes 2D games, we will first make 2 or 3 games for the PC and see how those do, because you have to at least have 2 developed games made with your company before you can get the equipment to develop for PS, Xbox, and so forth. That's my plan though, and I have a team of people that are going to go in with me. You should start seeing some game for the consoles at least by the fall of next year, so be ready!

Yeah, I probably play my GBA SP more than anything else. I have even been playing Tecmo Super Bowl on my NES that I found in the basement (thank God it still works).

Definitely keep us informed then. It sounds cool!

What kinds of games are you thinking about right now? Action, fighting? I always had a dream of designing a 2D fighting game one day. That is another genre that should never die IMO.

Right now, we are doing a vertical space shooter. I want to do action, rpg, and of course fighting! My favoritie game of all times is Street Fighter II, so I would HAVE to do a fighting game someday! We also plan to do mystery games as well. But mainly, I plan on being like Capcom used to be.

Man, I am going to have to have an old-school gaming session when I get off work. I'm getting all nostalgic between this thread and the one I am talking about Combat in.

Street Fighter II, Gunstar Heroes, Double Dragon for Sega Master System, Dimahoo(Capcom vertical shooter arcade), and I thinks that's was it for yesterday. I think I played on more game, but I can't remember what it was.

Heh, I still have the Fruit Roll-up (sealed) that came with my copy of Gunstar Heroes. I don't think I'll eat it (it is over 10 years old) but it is a great conversation piece.

What the...does it have GH wrapping or is it just generic? If the former, I DEMAND PICS!

Here it is! It says "free sample with this video game" on the wrapper. The batteries in my camera died but I can try to take a clearer pic tomorrow.

2D gaming will probably be around for awhile yet. With rising development costs for pushing polygons I imagine it will be easier for smaller developers to go the 2D route.

I have a huge level of respect for you. Although the plan may not seem that original, every game with creative old-school elements in it (viewtiful joe) brings us one step closer to bringning back old genres

---No genre ever dies, it is simply pushed to a smaller format, like the cell phone. This, however, is a fate worse than death

I've been on a bit of a metroid kick myself. finished Zero mission yesterday and started the original. Also got a CPS 1 + 2 and Neo Geo emulator for my xbox which has all kinds of good 2-d fighters and shooters-- so plenty of Garou:MotW, Dimahoo, viewpoint and Gigawing action at the apossum house.
