What's Gamestop's Problem?

I went in to exchange a DDR Universe 3 for a new one today because the pad doesn't respond well. The guy gives me a "new" one but it doesn't even have it's shrinkwrap on it. After the guy scans everything, I asked him to open up the new one just to make sure everything was in it. To my surprise, the game was opened and had the sticker ripped open.

He maintains his position that it is indeed "new." Ugh. My face frozen from the bitter cold outside, I didn't have the energy to argue. Now that I'm home, I'm wondering if I should go back to the same store tomorrow and ask for a straight up refund because I am returning a "new" product or if I should just go to another GS and tell them it's defective. I don't even want the damn game anymore. Any suggestions?

They've been selling opened games as new for years. They'll open up the game case and take the disc out so they can display the case.

One of many reasons I've not set foot in one in years.

Their problem?

Greed.

Stop feeding the monster money and it'll go away.

You and me both. They sold me a display copy of Jade Empire and I found it had scratches on the back. That's a load of bull when they tell you its new...

After I quit from Gamestop, I promised myself id never step foot in one again. The fact that you buy a game the day it comes out for $65.39 and you try to trade it in a day later and only get $25.00 if your lucky, should speak for itself. There are plenty of other places you can get your games from. I personally like BestBuy only time a salesperson talks to me is if I approach them with a question (although if its about the quality of a game your better off asking other customers around you).

Also Bestbuy from time to time has sales on games, for example When Call of Duty 4 first came out bestbuy had it on sale for $39.99. Also they dont gut copies of games let there employees play them for a few days than tr to pass it on as New.

Also Amazon is a great website to get games from.

That's a huge point of contention with me too, OP. However, since you returned an open game, I don't see a problem with you getting one back. It's when I go in to buy a NEW game and they try to sell me a "new-ish" game for the same price that I ain't havin' it.

I mean, every other store offers discounts on display/floor models. Why should games be different? GameStop is almost as greedy as the oil companies -- taking advantage of the weakened economy by still padding their pockets as stingily as ever. Okay, maybe I'm getting overly dramatic now, but you get my point.

Ha! Okay, would you be happier if I changed the analogy to be about gas stations, rather than oil companies? ;)

When I worked at Gamestop, they'd let you borrow the new games that were gutted. I'm pretty sure they still let you do that, so how is it considered new?

It really makes my blood-boil. I've told them multiple times to do what Blockbuster does, either A.) Place new games in the locked cases B.) place placards in place of the "new game" boxes. Their response was that it was to costly... what-ever.

And the worst thing about it is that if you buy a "gutted-new" they wont let you return it...

All this is just some of the reason I only buy used games from them. And, even then only once they have been out for a while.
The only way that I know exactly what I am getting.
If I want new, I go someplace else.

Mine puts those round clear stickers on the case so you can't open it. As long as those stickers are intact, the game's treated like any other new return.

The problem is not getting a gut copy of a game. But I don't buy "new" games from GS anyways, not anymore. Other stores usually have better deals these days.

Wrong. They are supposed to put a sticker on the case or put it in bag so you can return it. If they don't you should ask them to do it.

I guess one of the employees wated to take it home and play it .

They do this where my nephew works , they have an official sign out sheet and everything .

fuck Gamestop .

That's funny, because I only buy NEW games at GameStop.
If a new game isn't shrink-wrapped, I'll pass. Simple.
But GS is a lot less picky with their used games; I want that shit mint, son! It rarely happens. Oddly, I'd rather buy used games sight unseen from eBay.
