What's in the PS Store (5/31/16): Neon Chrome, Oxenfree, Primal, There Came an Echo, Plague Inc, & More!

Cool, I have fond memories of Altered Beast in the arcades as a kid. I hope this port is pretty good. If so, they have my $5 and my wife and I will wise fwom our gwaves and rescue a mofo daughter!

[quote name='MSI Magus']Hell yeah, Sonic 1 and 2 free is pretty cool![/QUOTE]

Probably too soon to ask but I wonder if you can save anywhere in these games? Sometimes I just need something to play for 10 minues or so. Also be nice to have something that I can play while the kids are still up.

This might convince me to sign up for plus. But I wouldnt pay for these games individually at full price or on sale. But I'd pay $50 to get them for 'free'? Hmm....

[quote name='KrebStar']So, do we know if these Sega games are taking the place of the monthly free PSN games?

If so...lame[/QUOTE]

I will take it over a lot of the crap we got in the past. First off Sonic 1 and 2 as well as comic zone are cool as hell to get free, but besides that compare that to the months where we got like a mini or two and an avatar for free. I think this is a great month and besides that a hell of a lot better then some others we have seen.

You'll get no argument from me there, PSN+ has been pretty mediocre up until recently. I would just like to hope we'll see something other than games many of us have played countless times between now and October.

That being said, I'm certainly looking forward to beating my way through Comix Zone yet again.

Am I missing something, why are people so pumped for these Sega games to be released when you can get all of them and MANY more for $16.99 new from amazon ($12.99 used at warehouse deals) in the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection?

I guess I figured anyone who would be jazzed to play 16-bit classics would have already picked up the cheap collection of 40 titles.

If you're not a plus member and you want in on this, go buy the collection (40 titles + bonus content) off amazon for $15. $30 for 6 games.....Laughable.

I do not want 90% of the games on the SUGC disk and I really hate to have to put in the disk to play them. When I want to play a game like Sonic its less that I am like unbelievably in the mood for it and want to go up stairs and find my disk and put it in, Sonic and other genesis games are more like Ipad/Iphone kind of games to me. By that I mean they are games that sometimes I may have an hour to kill and I want something light and fun, I dont want to start a new game. I would play Sonic more on the whim to blow some time then I would hunt it down.

It's the Genesis port of Altered Beast, which is pretty crappy. Graphics and sound are both inferior to the arcade. You may want to keep your $5.

I don't understand why Sega keeps putting this version out -- it's also on iPhone/iPad -- when any modern device could easily handle the superior arcade game. People played Genesis Altered Beast because it was the pack in, not because it was any good.

Note that the Ultimate Genesis Collection contains both Genesis and arcade versions of Altered Beast.

I've played both versions and personally I think the arcade version has very loose controls (see cheap hits) and same thing for hit detection, they tightened up the game a bit for the Genny version, and I didn't think it was a bad conversion honestly, I mean how would the genesis stack up against its bigger System 16 brother.

A little off topic, but I'm curious to know what you think of the arcade and genny versions of Strider if you didn't like the genny version of AB very much compared to its Arcade predecessor.

Still AB's a decent game (not $5 decent) but still worth a playthrough every couple of years.

The Catherine demo will be back on the Japanese PS Store until Sunday, February 20 at 11:59 PM in Japan, which I think is Sunday morning at 9:59 AM EST/6:59 PST from looking at a world clock.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/free-movies-available-weekly-on-psn-via-toyota-highlander-promo/

Looks like Sony's offering a free rental each week for the next few weeks starting today with The Da Vinci Code:
Every week for the next four weeks, you'll be able to download a free movie rental from the PlayStation Store. How? Just look for the Toyota Highlander ad to appear in the Video section of the Store. Or, click "Featured Collections" to find the promotion. What will you be able to download? Here's the schedule:

Now until February 21: The Da Vinci Code
Week of February 22: Big Daddy
Week of March 1: Ghost Rider
Week of March 8: Stranger Than Fiction
They're all SD versions and you'll have the standard 30 days to start watching it with it expiring 48 hours later.

Yeah I saw Catherine was back up when I went to the JPN store last night, also two new eps of Game Diggin' are up (the JPN PSN show where they review retro titles, I don't understand much, but it's fun to watch and see some of the clunkers they play) Two new videos for Yakuza: Of the End are up as well.

I'll probably watch GR for free, saw Da Vinci when it was released and don't care for Sandler or Ferrell too much.

Its been up for ages, it's a fun little game to play, what always surprised me is that it is the only PS1 title to have a demo available on ANY of the PSN stores around the world, if they were smart they'd start mining some of the old demos to let people play the games for free to make sales, I mean if all they need to do is put them up (and a little QA work), what it there to loose, right?

They don't have any plans to bring it over at the moment. I'd be surprised if they don't bring it to the regions that have way more PS3s and Xbox 360s to make the most of that investment.

Am I blind for not finding the catherine demo?! I checked my hong kong account, couldn't find it. Guess I'll check the japan account tomorrow (though I can't navigate that one for the life of me)

I think I'll finally have to subscribe to PS+. I've missed out on some good stuff in the past but not enough to really make me regret my decision to not subscribe. Now things are picking up nicely.

EDIT - And how about that Aldynes release on the Japanese PSN store? They have (if I'm counting correctly) 3 of the 5 Supergrafx titles on PSN now. As long as they get around to 1941, I'll never have to think about buying a Supergrafx again.

Oh, I thought that title was "Ordynes." I've never heard of Aldynes.

There were two other PCE releases this week too. Wanderers from Ys and...oh, I've totally forgotten the other.

I thought it was worth mentioning because Backlash was talking about his memories of the arcade game. The Genesis conversion is noticeably different. The Genesis can be kind of hit and miss. Ghouls 'n' Ghosts had minor differences, but nothing that really mattered -- I thought that one was great. Mortal Kombat looked and sounded awful but played well.

I suck at Strider. Still, I would have bought it had it had one thing, which it didn't. I spent lots of time watching people (who were good at Strider) in the arcade and the parallax scrolling, especially on the mountain, always entranced me. The Genesis just didn't have that at all. Sounds shallow, I know, but that was one thing that I always looked forward to in the arcade version, and it was completely absent.

Sometimes that's all it takes -- that magic moment that's missing. Maybe AB Genesis will be everything Backlash needs, or maybe he'd miss the cheap hits and crappy hit detection.

What I think Sega (and other developers) should do is make both available in one package. Namco does this on the iDevices -- I got Galaga Remix which contains an updated version, but still has the original Galaga. It's more to test, sure, but that would make it worth the $5.

Sorry, since he was talking about UGC version of the genny port, but they're both on there (if I'm remembering correctly, so no biggie) I assumed it was in reference to the Genny port, my apologies...;)

I always thought Strider was more polished on the Genny, they improved some issues that the arcade version had and made the game a bit tighter with control (but not much since the arcade is pretty tight to begin with) but gfx differences like you mentioned didn't really both me too much, they are both really nice looking / playing games each with their own strengths. My only gripe of the mountain run was the glitching when he ran, I've fallen into the abyss many a time since he glitched and came to a grinding halt to either get blown up or not have enough speed to cross the gap, I probably never noticed the gfx you mentioned in detail before because of that, heh.

That would be nice but I'd think they'd want to milk it in some sort of Arcade games collection as a lot of Companies do like the aforementioned Namco.

[quote name='Brainberry']I still don't get all the hype for re-releasing this game.

Maybe if they polished it, or even better a brand new sequel.

I can't stand playing old ass ps1 games on the ps3.

I agree. I have tried a couple PS1 games and they are so blurry, it is unplayable. I think it has to do with polys though. Because the sprite based games from the 16 bit or furhter back arent as bad. And I probably have more nostalgia for them anyway since I remember playing them as a kid.

[quote name='FriskyTanuki']There was a PSP port of Xi called Xi Coliseum, which is what I'm guessing that demo is for.[/QUOTE]

No, it's the PS1 version that's playable on the PSP and PS3, so as I said it's one of the only (if not THE only) PS1 demo available on the PSN around the world. So like I said, it would be cool if they would mine the old catalog and start doing PS1 demos for the games they release on the PSN, probably would help sales for games that people want to try before they buy.

After playing it 2-3 years ago, I asked the same question, but more to the point of I thought it was an over hyped game, it had some nice points (combat, music) to it but (wished I had my original breakdown of the game, that I hit all key points) to make a long story short, it was too massive in story (that was cut short because of development limitations), too massive in scope, (I mean seriously a 6 part game and starting on part 5, that the creator cannot even finish the part of the story he's trying to do).

And even when Xenosaga came out to try and correct and flesh out some of the old ideas that he created to finish what he started (but not named the same) he failed then too, because he wanted to tell too much and couldn't fit it into the game then either (plus if you look back into the original timeline for Xenosaga you'll see he totally missed his mark for what he wanted to tell in those 3 games as well because of too much to tell and not being able to do it.

I applaud the fans who really like it (because they were able to tolerate and overlook the faults it has more than I was and enjoy it more), I mean for a Sci-Fi RPG it has some merits, but with it being a totally incoherent mess of not enough time to tell its story, the fact that the second disc is a total disaster since they ran out of time when developing it (talking heads and a reel of 'best of' fights, all the way through endgame) it feels to me like a game that needed near unlimited budget and time, and never did get it, and even when given the second chance to do it over again, right this time, the creator still couldn't get it done right...

Anyway enough ranting, I'm glad that those who've been waiting for it finally get to have a chance to play it, I guess that's worth enough to be what really matters.

Edit: I like how Wrencrest and I interpreted Brainberry's comments on the game so differently. I was going in depth on the game itself and not on the quality of looks, etc., heh.

1. Cheaper to buy versus new/complete copies on eBay, Amazon, etc.
2. Because people want more great games to play on their systems and this is another avenue to get them besides retail and PSN games.
3. Playable on PS3 and PSP.

I'd imagine that those are three of the major reasons that people anticipate the release of major PS1 games on PSN.

I am with you. Some of these games like Suikoden 1 and 2 hold up very well, but most fall flat on their face. The graphics look horrible and more importantly the gameplay, menu system, skill system etc etc are all dated.

Exactly, Its a joke that they reward PS+ members with free genesis games, I'd rather get games that are a breath of fresh air like stacking.

I bought, i think its was resident evil ps1 classic and i couldn't even get pass 10 mins of it. The graphics and res are just too choppy for me to enjoy.

And i appreciate the diversity in responses in this section. Its awesome.

EDIT: RE Xenogears - It certainly helped if you had it back in the day. I remember the demo when I bought Parasite Eve, and it was fantastic. The music definitely ranks among one of the best OSTs (June Mermaid is amazing) Ive ever heard, and it still holds up to this day. While overall the story got a little out there, it certainly had some memorable moments (The first meeting with ID, and certainly the end of Disc 1 plot revelation).

Xenosaga was way too ambitious, especially when you consider that NOTHING happened in game 2, then half of game 3 was wasted in a goddamn flashback. If you read the database about Gnosis Terrorism, it was way more interesting than anything that actually happened in game 2 or 3, and imagine it would have fleshed out an entire game by itself.

im gonna try to wait for an alien breed bundle with all 3 for $15 ;) make it happen in a month or two.

and yeah, i am so hardcore xenogears fan, but really, im gonna play the original if i want to play it or just think about the happy memories. the only ps1 games i got on ps3 are symphony of the night and suikoden1 and those were both sales and i havent even touched them. but yeah, ff7 and xenogears were back when square was a AAA company...

Good to see they're getting around to release games that have been available on PSN in Japan since mid-2008.

$10 is steep. I'd like to see some of the other Square PSOne catalog. Their releases during the PSOne era were almost entirely excellent (no matter how snotty many of us have become in terms of our demands for visuals).

I have this on disc, so I won't be buying it. But it would be tempting to support them at $6. No way at $10.

There's an Ordyne on PCE/TG-16 as well. I think it's been released on VC.

but Aldynes is a completely different beast...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0-c36S2Tr0

some very impressive scrolling/scaling given the fact that it's still essentially an 8-bit game that's 20 years old.

Regarding Xenogears - I'll buy it despite still owning a physical copy. My PS3 is currently residing 5 hours away from all my PS1 games and I'd be down to play it on PSP. Maybe... Tactics Ogre is pretty awesome.

I think for a lot of people it really is not about the graphics its about the game play. I have went back recently and played some old PSX games and while some of them have held up far too many have not. Yes the graphics can be an issue, but really its not too hard to adjust to them and look past them. Struggling with the camera, bad item menus, gameplay quirks and many other features that have been eliminated over the last two gens though...those are much harder to look past.

Yeah the PC version of RE1 looks nice in comparison because it smooths all those old polygons from the jaggie messes they once were, problem is I have no idea if it would even play on today's hardware because of the gfx hardware it was released on (3DFX and other 2nd gen gfx cards)

Also did you try to use smoothing (press the PS button in game and go to other options) to make it look a little better, some games take really well to it (Vagrant Story). That might be an option to look into, otherwise just play the GC verision, unless you HAVE to play the original incarnation of it.

True, I'm still waiting for the JPN version of Einhander to show up on the HK store (since I don't have enough money in my JPN account to get it).

I guess their excuse for $10 is it's a 2-disc game (barely) (so sorry, I had too).

But some PS1 games (as I mentioned still look very lovely when given a fresh digital coat of paint via smoothing, etc.) I hardly ever play PS1 or PS2 games on my PS3 without some sort of digital trickery involved. (Last game I played that way was Jak and Daxter 1 and it looked really nice in widescreen and smoothed, made sure the game was displayed in 16x9 in game as well) so the gfx issues aren't that massive to me, it's like Magus said more gameplay issues being the beast that's hard to overlook for me.

Wonder if I'll get around to playing the Yakuza 4 JPN demo I've had for a year that I still haven't played yet, before the the demo is widely released before tomorrow.

Actually we didnt interpret what he said differently. I just responded to a different part of his post than you did. I was just speaking to the PS1 era graphics. Whether or not you will like an old game like Xenogears will vary widely. I played it when it first came out and liked it.(but not clamoring to play it again) Though, being an RPG, the graphics may not be that distracting compared to shooting or action games.

Holy fuck, Xenogears. Never played it but it's awesome to see something like this on the PSN so I will have the chance to experience. Now for the weather to get drivable so I can get a PSN card
