What's still worth playing on the PSX?

I've recently been playing some catch up, as of all the eras of gaming, the PSX one was the one I missed out on, mostly due to financial constraints. Now, I'm going back and playing things I've missed. Currently working on Parasite Eve and Grandia, and picking up some others. My question: what still holds up and is worth playing? I know many titles have been completely outclassed by their modern counterparts, and I'm not too concerned with graphics obviously. So, what's still in the top tier of its respective genre?
Xenogears, Final Fantasy...

these are quite expensive, however
I'd rather pay top dollar for a AAA experience, so that's not a huge concern. I'm thrifty, not cheap.

Crash Bandicoot 2 & 3 (the first one is good too, but 2 & 3 are superior).
Heart of Darkness
Oddworld Abe's Oddysey & Exoddus
Final Fantasy VIII & IX

This should go in the Old School forum, not the General Gaming forum.

That's my bad. Mods, feel free to move this. Realizing the PSX is now "old school" just makes me feel old.

Threads of Fate, Legacy of Kain, Spyro Year of the Dragon, Front Mission 3, Syphon Filter. That should keep you busy with a variety of game play types.

Tomba! and Tomba 2, especially since you can't get remakes or re-issues of these for any other system. They are true PSX exclusives!

Castlevania SOTN
Klonoa
Parappa the Rapper (and UmJammer Lammy)
Einhänder
Persona 2
Parasite Eve 1
Bushido Blade 1
Resident Evil Series
Tenchu
Silent Hill
Mega Man 8
Mega Man Legends
Colony Wars
Fear Effect

This exact thread was posted on NeoGAF today.

Any chance you're a Sony inside guy looking to give the PSN store's PS1 section a kick in the butt?

PLEASE SAY YES I WANT MORE PS1 GAMES ON PSN STORE

Raystorm
Gekioh: Shooting King
Raiden Project

Nectaris (the PSX remake of Military Madness)

And if you're open to imports, everyone is going to tout the the known ones but a lesser known but awesome game is Geppy-X

People have listed some pretty good stuff so here's a few I didn't see yet. These are titles that you won't find in a collection, XBLA or PSN,:

Grandia
Arc the Lad Collection
Lemming 3D
In the Hunt
Herc Adventures

time crisis is still pretty fun. i loved those games. even point blank is still fun to play after all these years.

lunar is a great series to play through, very nice early anime visuals.

silent hill 1 is also great. the awesome visuals makes up for the poor control scheme.

resident evil 2. if you havent played it, its never too late..

Breath of Fire IV

Castlevania SotN

Crash Bandicoot 2

Chrono Cross

Final Fantasy VII-IX

Ray-Man

Resident Evil 2

Alundra
Azure Dreams
Vagrant Story (wish this didn't cost so much though)
I found a disc only copy of both Alundra AND Alundra 2 at Gamestop when they started dumping their older gen stuff. I still have the original Alundra, which almost gave me diabetes from it being so sickeningly sweet and cutesy.

I think I also saw and passed up copies of Azure Dreams there, as well as Heart Of Darkness and I actually picked up a copy of Vagrant Story from a local shop that's dumping it's PS1 games at 50% off now. I tried it for all of 30-40 minutes, got nauseated by the horrible controls and visuals and I sold it to a fellow CAG for $25 or so shipped.

Here's my suggestions though:

Wild 9-a game published by Interplay, where you used 'The Rig', which was like one of the Ghostbusters proton packs. You could throw enemies into grinders, use their lifeless bodies to help you cross toxic swamps and many other delightful things.

Cool Spot: Spot Goes To Hollywood(also on the Genesis and SNES)- the second of the 7*Up mascot's games, it took many movie themes and turned them into levels, very fun

Rampage World Tour(and Universal Tour)-this was a 'sequel' to the original Rampage, which added a few things, but it was still the same mindless(and fun) building smashing and people eating game as always

Roscoe McQueen: Firefighter Extreme- A predecessore to Firefighter FD 18 on the PS2, you carried around a water pack on your back to put out fires in buildings. Very fun and frustrating at times.

Bushido blade 1
Silent hill

The other staples (ff7, re2, parappa, SotN are my other favorites) have already been covered.

I guess everyone's bias again Resident Evil 1. Maybe its just this forum but where I grew up it was a must have game when it came out. I'll always remember the cut scene when Jill went into the one hall way and the zombie looked up from eating one of the STARS members. Probably the scariest cut scene ever at the point. I was only 10 or so and I was playing the game in my room late at night. Needless to say the door was locked that night haha.

But also would add RE2, Tomb Raider 1 and 2. But NBA Street the original was a fun game since the gaming world hadnt seen a fun sports game like that since NBA Jam. Don't much remember what else I played back then.

I've tried playing it again a few times over the last few years, but the controls on RE1 are rubbish. That's why I don't think it has held up well. I am a zombie loving freak but I just can't bring myself to like that game. RE2 is the best of the psx games and the second best of the series after 4.

RE2 is too quick. I think I beat that the quickest of any game ever on PS1. Good games but I beat it on both PS1 and N64 in quick fashion.

The draw of beating RE2 is that each time you do it you get a tiny bit more of the story at the end. I must've beaten it at least six times. I tried to play through it again recently on the Gamecube but couldn't really get into it. Am sad.

Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2. (If you like racing games, these are two of the best. I actually prefer the first, even if the second has more American cars which I like a lot more)

Final Fantasy VII.

I just played through Silent Hill yesterday (5-1/2 hours total to complete the game) and found the gameplay has held up very well over time. It's still the same great game today as I remember it was when it came out ten years ago.

I remember playing that in the dark in college with all of my roomates watching. We all freaked out whenever the radio static started. Super game.

If only RE1 held up that well.

Pretty much anything in 2D is still worth playing. Most 3D games (except RPGS like FFVII) are going to look and control so badly that nostalgia is the only reason to play them.

Man, are you just recommending whatever games come to mind regardless of whether or not they're trash?

Hindsight for gamers is like Mr. Magoo.

In my life I don't think I've ever been so nostalgic to play or recommend an old sports game. I mean I have fond memories of NHL 93-95 and nba live but ugh, to play (or recommend) those again? No freaking way. Outside of psuedo sports games like NBA Jam or NHL Hitz they never hold up well.
