Whats your least favorite genre?

Hands down for me it is thoses "gay" RPGs.

I'm Not talking about Zelda: OoT more like all of the Final Fantasy games and the other RPGs that you level up.

sports games, i dont mean to bash, just my 2 cents, but its the same thing every year, just a different cover, and i cant stand hearing all the frat boys around campus, and others going nuts over madden..madden this, madden that.
maybe im missing something?
(well..boxing games are cool though ;) )
second place would be rpgs, like long winded, level up rpgs...i mean, ff12 literally put me to sleep while playing it, but persona 3 magically raised my faith in the series and im thinking of dusting off persona 2 to play :)
MMOs are too complicated, altough I voted for racing games since you listed MMOs with RPGs which I like.

Racing, I don't know, I guess I just don't like it. I enjoy sports titles though.
Agreed on both points.

I'm not too into MMOs, but I find that they aren't complicated enough, actually  once you learn how the skill and inventory system works in an mmo, it's pretty much just grinding levels from there on out.

and the only racer I like is Burnout, which isn't really racing. I don't understand realistic racing sims at all...they always manage to bore the shit out of me.

Well platformers generally don't interest me at all, although I realize that I have neglected some of the better ones over the past few years (Jak/Ratchet series). That being said, I will pick up the new R&C sometime down the road as my last chance gor the genre.

Other than that, puzzle games typically don't do much for me. Lumines is great, and I definitely enjoy the old school Wario's Woods and Tetris Attack.

I must be one of the nuts that likes the sports and racing genres

Sports games.
I'll never feel comfortable with the controls, and this is coming from someone who found a way to make MGS3's contols work. I reluctantly made MGS3's controls work, but I enjoyed them more than sports controls. Saying something like "you press L2 to juke" just feels stupid to me. I don't know why.

Single-player FPS.

I enjoy multiplayer FPS with the right crowd, but single-player FPS is uninteresting to me. It's heresy to say it, but for this reason HL2 bores the shit out of me. I may give Portal a go, though, as everyone seems to be crazy about it.

JPRG.
My dislike of the genre started to build with Grandia III for the DC, which had some fun moments but was unashamedly cliche at every opportunity in the narrative. Since then every JRPG has been worse and worse for me, and now they've wrecked me. I tried to get excited about Blue Dragon but eventually admitted to myself that I didn't give a fuck. The themes, characters, gimmicks, etc. that JRPGs in particular abuse just make me miserable. No sense in recounting them as we all know them.

The Burnout series is awesome, but other than that I have no use for racing games.

I play RPGs/MMOs less frequently than racers, but on the rare occasion I play an RPG, I generally enjoy it.

 • RPGs (though there are a few that I love playing, as a whole I don't like the genre)
 • Fighting (so repetitive)
 • Platformers (mostly because I stink at these)

I dont know if MMOs should really be in the same group as RPGs in general. RPGS are my favorite genre but I despise MMOs. They have almost nothing in common.

My *actual* least favourite genre is MMORPG but you lumped it in with regular RPGs!

Bollocks!

So I chose platformers instead, because they're fucking crap.
Saying something like "you press L2 to juke" just feels stupid to me. I don't know why.

Don't take offense, but I found this statement kinda humorous. I was thinking, as opposed to press square to slash?
This place is mostly for console games, and RTS genre isn't particularly well represented there. Not saying it shouldn't have been an option, but the thread creator probably just forgot about it.
Yeah that, and I only have 10 spaces to work with. So I could only list 10 choices max, and I thought I could re organize it later with stuff I missed or move stuff around and I can't. There are a few genres I missed like Horror, RTS, Flight games, ect. I am working on a favorite genre topic here soon which I am going to try my best to get everything in there I can. I will not lump MMO's with RPGS though seems to be getting some hate that I did that, so I wont in the next topic. There are so many genres some stuff will have to be lump with others to get them all in. I hope people will understand this since I am trying my best to make people happy and to try and get all the genres in.
Don't forget dating sims!
They are mostly Japan only, so they can be left out. I still want to try some anime dating sims. ;)

I've never been a fan of FPS. The only ones I can play are Metroid Prime Makken X, and Portal.

Sports and Racing would come next. The only racing games I'm a fan of are Rock n' Roll Racing & Mario Kart.

Sports. Just the realistic ones though. I don't see the point in playing a realistic sim of a sport you can go outside and play. Racing games are one thing because going out and playing Gran Turismo is just foolish, but going out and playing football is far more likely to help me live longer than kill me.

No good lazy people sitting around playin Madden
This place is mostly for console games, and RTS genre isn't particularly well represented there.
Then why the heck are MMOs shoved together with RPGs?

How many MMORPGs do the consoles have?

Final Fantasy XI and........?

flight, racing, dating, simcity/simcopter, et cetera.

People who hate RPGs are focusing on the wrong part of it. They take you to a crazy world of some sort and allow you to explore it and find more crazy stuff.

Setting/atmosphere is the best part of an RPG and if platformers/action games had as much of it, I wouldn't even bother with the clunky RPG battle systems.

I hate music games, realistic sports games and realistic driving games.
People who hate RPGs are focusing on the wrong part of it. They take you to a crazy world of some sort and allow you to explore it and find more crazy stuff.
I can do that in other genres too. And I enjoy the gameplay in other genres better.

To me, RPGs = level grind till your attack beats the enemies attack = no skill necessary. The other element is chance, will the attack hit or not? Which is old school D&D dice rolling. Not that I didn't enjoy old school D&D, but rolling to see (translated today: hit the attack button and wait to see) if you're going to beat the snot out of the enemy isn't quite as intense as what you get in a shooter.

RPG or Racing. RPG games, I lose interest fairly quickly. I think the last one I played was the first Wild Arms when I was like 10, and I didn't even finish that.

EDIT: Forgot about Oblivion, which I quickly lost interest in with about 12 hours of gameplay.

Racing games, I only like very specific ones, but again I lose interest quickly. Burnout was fun, but got old. The last racer I put a TON of time into was Ridge Racer for the PSP. Played the shit out of that game.
I can do that in other genres too. And I enjoy the gameplay in other genres better.
Yeah as I said, on the rare occasion another genre can pull off an awesome and distinct atmosphere, it usually ends up being cooler. That's why I think action RPGs have really taken off. I think games with seperate battle screens and random encounters are antiquated these days. Something like FF XII with a more interactive battle system (And perhaps less monsters altogether) would be very cool.

The Japanese RPG needs to die or change. No more cliche plots, no more menu based battle systems (that aren't of the strategy variety), and no more 12 year old boy looking female and male characters!
The Japanese RPG needs to die or change.
No.
No more cliche plots,
I find the plots very interesting. There have been a few JRPGs that made me teary eyed.
no more menu based battle systems (that aren't of the strategy variety),
Menus are great because they allow you to carefully plan your moves and they handle multiple party members better. I prefer full control over my party members and using a menu (like in turn-based RPGs) makes it work really well.

and no more 12 year old boy looking female and male characters!
So what, I like young characters in JRPGs. I actually like younger characters more because more because they tend to have more emotion (and then that makes me feel the emotion).

I think the biggest change needs to be the cliched plots & characters. I don't mind menu based battle systems at all. But yeah, those 12 year old pretty boys need to go. I want to relate to the main character in some way but not when they look like this:

I'm sorry, I mean this:

I didn't vote cuz the RPGs/MMOs option is too inclusive, I think. JRPG is one of my least favorite genres, but Western RPG is one of my favorites, so I can't get myself to check that. Sports is probably down there with JRPGs. Not too big on (3D) platformers either.
I actually like longer characters more because more because they tend to have more emotion .
Longer? Did you mean Younger?
Longer? Did you mean Younger?
Yeah, I did. Sorry, I've been making WAY too many typos today (guess I didn't get enough sleep). :whistle2:(
Naw, I love young spikey hair anime characters, such as:

Cleru

Edgar (Holding the sword and has blonde hair)

and more. Oh course I love characters like Fayt Leingod, Sora, Tidus, Zidane, chaos, Jr., and so on.

Yeah, I know I'm a little too obsessive over RPG characters. :p I can't wait to play Blue Dragon more to like Shu more and finally get to know Allegretto better in Eternal Sonata. If anyone knows of an RPG with a character I may like, definitely let me know. ;)

I went with Sports and Racing (although I do enjoy Mario Kart). I'm also not a huge fan of fighting games (except for a few, Brawl obviously, and I'm also looking forward to Godzilla Unleashed). I also really hate stealth games.

I agree with Jer7583 that Japanese RPGs either need to die or change.

I just can't stand turn based battles anymore (except for Dungeons and Dragons, but I think that's because I used to play and know exactly how D&D rules work). I love it when Japanese RPG developers use action combat, like in Kingdom Hearts or Tales of Symphonia.

The developers seem to be making JRPGs way too linear. It's like they forgot that having at least somewhat open worlds is one of the major things that makes an RPG an RPG. The Final Fantasy series has major problems with this, especially the horrible Final Fantasy X.

I also agree that the pretty boy main characters need to go. It seems like the character designs are a bigger and bigger joke with each passing Final Fantasy.

At this point I don't even care about the main Final Fantasy XIII game, I don't plan on getting it, and I'm only interested Vs, which is being made by the Kingdom Hearts team, along with Crystal Chronicles for the Wii, which based on the year old trailer is going to be an action RPG.

My least favorite genre is probably sports, but mostly just realistic sports games. I don't watch a lot of sports, although I do play a few, so the sim aspect of the games doesn't appeal to me. I do like some arcade style sports games, lesser sports like Table Tennis, and Nintendo sports games.

Second is JRPG's. For a lot of gamers FF7 turned them onto RPG's, for me it did the exact opposite and really turned me away from RPG's. My main issue is cutscenes, this goes to any genre, but since RPG's are so focused on story they seem to be the worst offenders. I don't want to be interrupted from playing to watch cutscenes, it's lazy game design IMO, developers should figure out how to tell the story during the gameplay. Most of the RPG stories I have played would have been better suited as an anime cartoon, since you don't play them, you watch them. It doesn't help that most of the stories use the same tired cliches (just as bad as some Western game cliches). I also find there is a lot of grinding for the sake of grinding, to artificially lengthen the game. I don't like devoting 100 hours to one game, especially if there isn't enough variety in the game mechanics to warrant that many hours.

I honestly dislike sports games, to me there pointless. Racing games come in close, although I like Grand Turismo, thats about it.
