I may soon be stumbling across a nice chunk of change. I'm really interested in the PS3 system, but I need some advice as to when to buy it. I'm leaning on maybe when MGS4 comes out.. but thats just me. Resistance REALLY intrests me as well.. so does Tekken 6. Can't live without my Tekken!

Another question which i'm sure has been answered numerous times, but 20GB or 60GB? I'm not interested in multimedia stuff like videos or whatever, I have a computer for that. Any other uses for the 60GB? I'm thinking of just sucking up the $100 and going big or going home, then again I could probably just buy a bigger HD for that price.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

Buy one whenever, I doubt there will be a price drop for a long time, so if you want one you might as well buy it now.

As for 60gb or 20gb, unless you want to do remote play with the PSP, or need the wireless internet you can just get the 20gb and upgrade the HDD.
wow... really? I mean really?
lol.. well.. idk. I want to pick one up but don't know if I should keep in mind price drops on games or something.

I have also never played one first hand and am really interested in just about 1 game, and i'm a little reluctant on purchasing it.

Didn't know if I should hold out for price drops, better games, or if there is really anything out now worth owning.

If you hold out for price drops you'll be buying in December at the earliest, and then expect $50 maybe....less than the price of a game. It'll take much longer than that for Sonys prices to stop falling.

Sony only has a few exclusive games out for it now that are worth getting excited over, but as a game system the thing is just much too expensive without more software. Motostorm out next week will give it another good exclusive if you like that kinda game.

The value in the system really comes from its top-tier Blu-Ray playback abilities.
Its the best BD player on the market right now, so if you have a big HD display then you'll have that going for you.

But as a game only system? Its not there yet.....wait for more games to come out and maybe you can find one used from someone tired of waiting.

I bought mine at launch & besides playing FFXII on it I don't think I have played it for 3 hours. One of the biggest disappointments in my life because I bought into the hype. I was just as excited as everyone else and I got it hope and popped in RFoM and it was absolutely nothing special. Now I find myself playing nothing but my xbox 360.

There is just no unique content compared to the other options. Everything cool is also on the 360 and I can track my achievements on that platform. I have tried the motion sensing in Motorstorm and it is complete garbage. Seriously. There is like a split second of lag with it that it makes it completely unplayable. And on top of that no rumble too. It is amazing how subtle that rumble has become and you will find that you really miss it in driving and shooting games especially. So why bother even getting anything PS3?

So my best recommendation is to wait until the games get better, specifically MGS4, FFXII and *hopefully* Lair and even then it will be behind the 360 in terms of fun IMO.

I'd say buy now. There's talk of Sony taking out the Cell and switching to software based emulation to cut costs.
Now! The month of March will be very good to you.
If Playstation Home and all the other rumors end up being true, then yes x1000. March will kick ass.

Buy it now, watch blu-rays, play PS1/PS2/ the few exclusive games while you're waiting for more to come out.

If you're interested in one and have the money to get it without remorse, why not just get it? You'll have a blast with Resistance and Motorstorm, and get to watch some Blu-Ray movies while you wait for MGS4 or Tekken 6 or whatever.

Good going, you bought into the hype and didn't think 5 minutes ahead to question whether you would be interested in the games that were coming out in the months after launch. Like so many other suckers who only wanted it for the *I have the new hot item* factor, you've got a PS3, Resistance, and a bad case of buyer's remorse. Now you're posting on a forum sounding like a 360 plant and outing yourself for making a brainless, $700-after-tax-or-more, purchase. or maybe you paid $2000+ for it on ebay?

Anyway-- OP, don't end up like this guy. There is no *right* time to buy a ps3. You need to check out release lists and see if you'll like a decent amount of
the games that are out and coming out in the future. For me, it pretty much only took VF5 and Tekken DR to get me to buy it right away, but I knew it was the right decision as so many other games I'm interested in are coming out this year and next year.

if you aren't into the games, then wait.

Just get it now. It's kinda stupid to just decide "oh, I'll wait until MGS 4 comes out" because it's not like the price is going to drop between now and then.

I was thinking of voting for "Wait for more exclusives", but then I thought about how much I've been playing PS3 recently.

-Bought Flow the day it came out, beat it, and have still been playing it on-and-off multiplayer.
-Bought Tekken 5: DR and have already played for probably a good 15 hours. (only $20!)
-Will probably buy Calling All Cars, if the price is right.
-Preordered Motorstorm. Coming out 03/06.
-Preordered Oblivion. Coming out 03/13.
-If I'm not broke, will be buying Armored Core 4. Coming out 03/20.

But I can't forget F.E.A.R., Virtua Tennis 3, and Double Agent are all coming out before the end of the month.

It's definately a good time to own a PS3.

EDIT: Apossum is absolutely right, though. If none of the games interest you, hold off until it's worth it to you.

You can beat Flow?

Anywho, March is a big month, and Tekken, Flow and Resistance keep me busy, and I can';t wait for Heavenly Sword and Lair, however if there are lots of games that excite you, buy it. if not, dont.

If you can afford to get one at the current price, then get it now. I've never understood why people that have the money to buy a game system wait until a "must have" game comes out to purchase if the system will be the same price when that game is released.

My roommate bought his 360 almost a month ago at full price. And he's had the money for it since launch of the 360. He could've had the system all that time, even if there wasn't many games he wanted to play.

Because shit happens, I'd rather have $600 in my bank account for emergencies than a $600 system that I won't use for 6 months.

I'm still not sure I'll ever pick one up but I'd wait till Christmas time, units will be available and I wouldn't be amazed if a couple of stores run good specials just like they did for the 360 this christmas.

I got mine for Christmas and really haven't touched it until recently. I played Resistance for a while, but I really only find it fun in co-op. Then I grabbed some PS2 games to keep me busy, then dl'ed Tekken and have played it more in the past week than I have since I originally bought it. It's just a matter of having a game or two you want to play.

Granted, I'm still going to grab the multi-platform games on the 360, but there are still some siq looking exclusives coming out soon. And there's always the possibilty that the MGS4 on the 360 rumor isn't true, which will bring more people to the PS3.

I'd say hold off until the end of the month once the March releases are out. Unless there are games out already or games you know you'll buy this month on day one.

:applause: :applause: :applause:

Thanks for posting that so I wouldn't have to.

As zion said.. I don't want a $600 console in my house I won't be playing until MGS4 comes out, and I'm really not sure that the PS3 is what I want to spend my money on at the moment. I also don't really know if i'm going to have every last penny, so thats another key factor.

I'm not really asking when to buy the PS3, but more so When the PS3 will be worth my money.

That is an odd question. That is a personal thing that will change from whoever you ask so... It really is impossible to answer it, at least to give the answer you're looking for isn't it? Because the only one who can answer that question is you.

Right now is prolly one of the better times to pick a Ps3 up. It has a few good games out, some good games are coming out pretty soon(Within the next three months) and you never know if Sony is going to act stupid again and cut the hardware in the PS3 to make it cheaper

Well.. Since I have never played one.. and there are a lot of games out there that I am interested in.. forget it.

I'm just trying to explain myself from all these, "fuck you n00b, just buy it now" responses.

I've never played anything on it for that matter, and i'm looking for just some opinions as to when CAGs think I should buy, or if there are really any games beside resistance that will keep me busy for the next couple of months.
I'm not really asking when to buy the PS3, but more so When the PS3 will be worth my money.
When you'll get $600 worth of use out of it.

For most people, that requires more than one game you want to play on the system, but that's most people: maybe you're a semi-pro Virtua Fighter player, in which case why don't you own one already?

On the other hand, maybe you already have a 360, and you're looking for new exclusives, like Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk, and Motorstorm, which are generally unproven properties, and could be good, or could be crap, in which case you probably don't want to invest $600 with the expectation that they're all going to be AAA-titles.

Maybe you're willing to pay based purely on the promise of MGS4, which will certainly be awesome. Or maybe you have a really good TV and you're looking for a cheap Bluray player. In either case, go ahead and buy one now.

Bottom line: if you're unsure, hold off. Nobody can answer for you, but it's not like videogames have a shelf life. Who cares if you play Resistance today or in six months? You have nothing to lose by waiting: it's not like consoles go up in price later. Worst case, you pay the same. And if the software solution backwards compatibility is so great, then there shouldn't be any problems.

I would say hold off.. Unless you want to play PS2 titles and the current march releases you would do better to wait till some title that you want comes out. The chances of the price going up are a billion to 1 so you are more likely to see a sale between now and when MGS4 hits the stores.

Also having both a 360 and a PS3 myself I can see why many people would hold off. I wanted to play lots of PS2 titles that I never got a chance to as well as the F1 and Motorstorm games. For me it was worth it but for many waiting is better.

normally I would say if there is nothing you want for it wait untill something is out that you want...but if you want Backward Compatibility, I would say get it now, as it look like that won't be available in units soon (rumorered speculation that all ps3 will not have the emotion engine chipset in it come april)

price isn't going down for quite a while, so if you're holding out for a price drop, don't. it's not gonna happen anytime soon.

as far as the member who posted "shit happens," if you can't do without $600, then you have absolutely no business even thinking about a PS3. considering between games, startup accessories, extra controller, console, etc. you're looking at an initial investment of about $800 at least. seriously, some people just don't have the budget for it and too bad for them.

I'm waiting till April to see if the "gimped" unit has the 65nm Cell chip in it. Me thinks it's gonna, and I want less heat pumping from my system. F1 and Motorstorm will have to wait 1 month:(

Also hoping the horrible February sales continue into March and Sony's forced to do a 100 dollar price drop to kickstart things.

March is the 2nd best selling time for all companies and february and january are some of the lowest.

Well the question is do they intend to dominate the next gen DVD wars with this system? Because if they do they will have to reduce the price. If their system was $399 rather than $499 they would sell very quickly and HD-DVD would fall behind.

It's really sad that they may be removing this. That is the one feature that makes the PS3 interesting to me. The ability to play all my PS2 games on the new system. Oh well my old PS2 will just have to keep on running! I'm sure backwards compatibility doesn't really sell systems.

This generation, unless you REALLY want games made by the company who makes the consoles, waiting to see whose got the most robust library would be wise. I doubt we're going to see the PS3 or 360 have the amount of exclusives that the PS2 or even Xbox had last gen.

A PS3 may be a solid investment for you, depending on how the software goes. I'd hate for you to spend $500-$600, though, and end up with what is essentially a second 360, with Sony games, without Microsoft games.

If Sony's 1st party offerings are enough to hook you, get it now, or once their out, your choice. I'd advise waiting until there are at least a few games you want to play.
NOW. I'd go crazy if I didn't buy a PS3 now. I could not live without it.
I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but may I ask why? What are you able to play, right now that makes you more at ease, while not having a PS3 yet would make you go crazy?

I really don't think the Wii nor the PS3 has anything that screams "PLAY ME BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET THIS ANYWHERE ELSE!" yet, save for maybe Sonic on the Wii, but that's hardly a system-seller. Twilight Princess was very good, but if I hadn't shelled out the cash for a Wii already, I could've played it on the GC too.

I understand getting a PS3 because you dig Sony's stuff, and the stuff that's been announced to be coming down the road, and that's great. Waiting is so hard, but hopefully always worth it. :) But what's so special right now that you couldn't live without?

i'm waiting because i thought that their hdmi was still fucked up....did they fix this? can i know play this ps3 in a hd sharp aquos tv?
You obviously have to wait until there is more blu-ray porn.......

I will buy one if Keyboard Mouse is a standard option in all FPSes as it will be in Unreal Tournament on PS3, inless Microsoft answers back with keyboard Mouse option, then I go back to whom ever is cheaper, if curent gen libraries are evenly matched.
I heard that MGS4 might be coming to the 360. Hearing this news made me doubt a PS3 purchase.
I think with Phil Harrison running the show, he will do everything in his power to keep MGS4 on the PS3.
I heard that MGS4 might be coming to the 360. Hearing this news made me doubt a PS3 purchase.
It may because Konami is fighting with Sony over some contract deals or something like that. Even is sony loses metal gear it seems the only system that still has a bunch of exclusives is Nintendo

I mirror this sentiment. While it didn't affect my purchasing decision (I bought one recently), this is pretty much the only way I'll play FPS games on consoles. This option would really make playing the genre on the console a viable option for me, as I just don't enjoy playing these types of games with the regular controller. I'm really hoping they allow keyboard/mouse with half-life 2 black/orange/magenta or whatever the PS3 version is called.

edit: Also, going back to MGS4, is it pretty much confirmed the game is actually coming out this year? I have a sneaking suspicion this may not hit till sometime in '08; if anyone knows of any recent announcements confirming this, please prove me wrong.

Why don't you try Google and see if the console is right for you right now or whenever... just buy the console right now and start enjoying Resistance... and move on.
If you are still going to buy it but just wait until MGS4 then what the fuck is the difference from buying now?
As he, and others have said, it's better to have $600 in your bank, than to have a $600 machine you're not going to play until MGS4. You know, in case something comes up and you really need moneyz.

Me, I'm trying to decide if I should buy now, or wait until MGS4 as well. As well, as having money in the bank, I wouldn't want to buy a PS3 now, and some deal comes along, before MGS4, where I could have saved a couple of hundred dollars (like the CompUSA clearances).
