bought it a few days ago, and spent the last few nights on a street fighter marathon trip with my cousins... so here's a few thoughts:
- third strike alone for 30 bucks is very much worth it. in my opinion, this is the deepest, funnest, and best street fighter game... and maybe one of the best fighting games period. from what i've seen, it's a closer port of the arcade game than the dc version. downsides? well... maybe it isn't that deep in terms of storyline, so it's like mvc2 in that it's strictly all about the gameplay. i'm a fan of the storyline, so it kind of sucked not to have much connection to the previous games, but i got over it real quick. in fact, some of the funnest time i've had with the game was in training mode, just trying to perfect combos.
- the hyper street fighter version is sort of what you remember it to be. it's closer to super turbo though. and yes, the AI is one of the hardest AI's in any fighting game. the graphics are pretty true to the latest incarnations. that is to say, they're not the greatest, but the game IS pretty old. gameplay wise, what can i say? except that it's everything that built this damn house of fighting games. it kind of sucks that in arcade mode, all of the opponents are strictly super turbo. i would've liked to have played an all world warrior version, or (my personal favorite) just regular turbo. also, they got rid of bonus stages... no more beating the car, the pyramid of bricks, and not even the falling barrels. actually, they took out a LOT of things in this... especially in the game mode department, because all you've got is arcade and versus, pretty much. a few more glaring omissions: stage select, handicap settings, and match records!
- you get street fighter the animated movie... which is cool if you've never seen it before, and sucks if you were hoping for the non-dubbed, non-censored version. it would have been cool to have a big art gallery... but i guess you can't have everything. on a sort of related note... you guys should check out the official bradygames guide for this game. authored by some awesome players in the sf community. basic tactics, in-depth advanced strategy, frame data... none of that "here's the special moves and the super moves" bullshat, just real useful stuff. plus you get a third strike soundtrack.
- all in all, very very worthwhile to buy, even if you have to settle for full price. i spend most of my time playing third strike, and most people will. that's not to say hyper sf anniversary isn't good... it's just a little bit outdated. i still have fun with it, but honestly, the people i play with prefer newer games. single player wise, you'd have fun with both... i probably prefer the older sf2's over the vs. series, guilty gear, and almost every 3d fighter. just remember that sf is about skill, so if you lose a bunch, don't take it as the game sucking... it's just you that sucks. button mashing is punished, not rewarded. this isn't soul calibur 2 (HAHA to you soul calibur 2 "pros").
