why do so many Amazon reps come from India?

Outsourced-TVseries.jpg

English-speaking labor force in third world country which has historical ties to the international commercial power of Great Britain + laws that allow outsourcing to happen.

Possible action for you to take: Call up Amazon customer service and use it as a party line chat. Exploit trade-in glitches to amass credit and use to purchase Indian mail order bride. Depopulate India and build strong India-American customer service presence in America.

Aside from the slight language/accent barrier, all of the reps in India are always very nice, even when we know we're at a stalemate in the conversation.

On the flipside, telemarketing in America seems to have become 90% Jamaican/Nigerian women with a very short temper and a finger glued to the hold/transfer button.

i use to really dis mexicans and india's (not sure the pleural for em because native Americans are Indians :) ) but honestly they at least do the job without an ego or attitude. lot of outsourcing is done too because people are seas are generally smarter hehe. :)

As evidenced by your post.

This just made the thread worthwhile. Thank you.

That entire statement, 100% verbatim from start to "hehe" finish, would surprise absolutely no one if it turned out to be a lost quote from George Dub Bush Jr.

For everyone's sanity let's try and leave politics out of this. They have Indian reps because they are cheap. That is the bottom line. They also seem to use them more during late/non business hours.

They do a terrible job in comparison though, which really does make it a bother. Regardless of how polite they are and how undoubtedly charming their broken English is. I know far more about amazon's policies than they do, and I am consistently "helped" by them answering a question I did not ask, and completely ignoring what was actually asked.

Have you ever done telemarketing? Cold calling is the absolute worst job ever, especially if you had to sell some of the crap I've done over the years.

Case in point: One of the places I worked for was trying to sell "death and dismemberment insurance" and would not simply allow us to call it "life insurance". Virtually every person that I called was over the max age to qualify(80), had moved 20 years ago or was dead.

Another time I worked telemarketing was for the 'local firefighters' selling something or other. We had banks of phones set up on folding tables in a dingy office building in the downtown here. They allowed you to smoke right at your phone. Not only that but if the potential customers were rude/an asshole to you, you could be rude right back to them as long as the supervisor wasn't on the floor. It was actually typical for some of us to pass the person's phone number around the entire room and keep calling them back for over an hour if you were rude enough of a douchebag to one of us.;)

One last example: I worked for ICS/Thomson Education Direct/whatever the fuck their scam company is calling itself nowadays.

At one point in time ICS definitely seemed like a respectable company. People could 'learn from home and get a certificate'. Thing is, I worked the inbound call center that's located here and very often you would get 'misdirected' calls that were intended for their customer service department from former 'students'.

The common complaint I heard from those former students was that their certificate/whatever wasn't accepted ANYWHERE. Basically they got scammed out of hundreds(possibly thousands) of dollars for a piece of paper that in the end is only useful as toilet paper.

Anyway, you had 3 seconds to answer the phone for inbound calls from when you heard a beep indicating you had a call. Even if the customer only wanted information on the schooling, your job was to push them to make up their minds and get them converted(typical telemarketing garbage). But after hearing all of the complaints from former students that got misrouted to me I felt like I was working for Bernie Madoff. Horrible company to work for. I'm amazed they're still in business.

I work at an inbound call center for a fairly large regional bank, and it's actually one of the best jobs I've ever had. Usually people just call up with idiot questions about where they spent their money, or where their money went, or how much they do or don't have. On occasion you will get assholes that don't want to understand banking privacy laws and why we can't give them information on someones account, or idiots that don't understand how and why they overdrew their account, and why we charge them a fee, but in general the job is a breeze.
