Why does everyone want Valkyrie Profile so bad?

Yea, I'll stop by tomorrow to see if they have the second disc or else I'll just return it. Gotta stop by there anyways to pick up Atelier Iris.
Heh, the reason I pushed him on the point was because he only said it to bash RPG fans. He said something ridiculous to prove his non-existent point, and to help him knock something he doesn't like and doesn't understand.

There are genres I don't like, but you don't seem me ridiculing the people who do like them. But hey, I suppose if it makes someone feel bigger to do that, go for it, right?

And SMT:Nocturne most definitely took skill. If that game didn't take skill, no game does. Remember, there are more skills than just twitch reflexes.
I hear you completely. I'm glad you called him on it. He shouldn't make a bonehead statement and not expect to get called out on it.
Chrono Cross SUCKS HARD compared to almost any game, including Valkyrie Profile. VP is one of the best RPGs ever made. Whoever the hell said "it's not even considered that great of a game" should be shot because s/he is a liar. Now Rhapsody is a subpar game for the rate it's going at, and I could understand the same comment you made about VP being using for Rhapsody. But making such an asinine claim about VP without obviously even PLAYING it is retarded.
I'm going by GameRankings.
Well I for one just wish people would give Valkyrie Profile a chance. People should play games to ENJOY them. Yes, it doesn't have a disgustingly convoluted plot like Chrono Cross, which is apparently what people like nowadays, but... get this.... IT'S AN RPG THAT'S ACTUALLY FUN TO PLAY.

VP is one of my top 10 favorite RPGs of all time.

And for the record, it kicks the shit out of at least half of the Final Fantasies... I mean seriously, it's like you forgot that there were any before 6!

Anyway... I for one wanted Valkyrie Profile for the following reasons:
- Megaman X-style dungeons
- The best 2D visuals I have ever seen
- One of Sakuraba's best soundtracks
- Uniqueness. You can't play a game like VP without actually playing VP.

That last one applies to Intelligent Qube, Gitaroo Man, and Rez, as well.

.. So yeah, it's def. worth it for any fan of pre-PS1 video gaming.

Capitals were used for emphasis, not because I'm angry. :D
Totally agree with you 100%. VP is probably the most unique RPG ever. It is fun, and it doesn't sacrifice fun for stupid shit like Chrono Cross and countless other RPGs.

EDIT: About the above post by Rabid Mammal Wax: GameRankings is reviews by REVIEWERS, not people who actually review games for fun such as the fine folks here or some of the decent reviewers at Gamefaqs (yes, their forums suck, but their reviews are a lot more honest than the shit in magazines). Why don't you look at their reviews and compare CC and VP? VP has a shitload of reviews, but only two reviews 5 and below. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/review/199175.html CC also has a shitload of reviews, but there are NINE reviews that are 5 and below, and several 6s. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/review/196917.html I think it's about time you actually played the damn game before bashing it like in your OP, or STFU because you have no clue what you are talking about.

What the hell point was I trying to make? It was an opinion, tough guy. Dictionary.com for you. I just got done saying that I enjoy some RPGs, and I'm pretty sure everyone else read that. I guess you skipped both of those posts.

Gamefaqs reviews aren't written by professional reviewers.

The difference here is that these reviews that GameRankings compiles are written by reviewers who have experience and generally attempt to be as unbiased as possible. They're familiar with the genre and every aspect of the game (i.e. music, graphics, etc.) as it compares to other games in the same field. They excercise discretion and strive for some degree of professionalism.
And to whoever said RPGs take no skill - play Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.
So true SMT:N does challenge onces RPG playing skills. Bosses are nearly unbeatable unless the player learns the boss' weakness and exploits it. Also theirs a ton of other little things that add to its challenge over all its a great game.

VP had a really hard boss. I think it was called Bloodbane. The huge dragon that has an almost endless amount of life. I remeber having a Angel Curio, or something like that, which had the effect to revive Valkyrie but had 3% chance of breaking. And after about 30 minutes of fighting I chipped off all his life.

I was on pins and needles during that fight just wishing that item didn't break.

Trouble is, not all reviewers can be relied on for such clearsightedness, whether on any personal biases they have, or the inability to fully assess the pros and cons of a game in order to meet deadlines.

One example of a VP review I didn't agree with was the approx 7 that Andrew Vestal gave the game on Gamespot. He also gave the love it or hate it FF8 a 9.5.

In my opinion VP blows every main series Final Fantasy following 6 out of the water.
I do. Where do you come up with this crap?

Different places, different experiences.

Try being a programming major and see how many RPG/anime nerds you come across in your classes. ;)
Amen brother, amen. =) Not that there is anything wrong with people who really like anime, or people considered "nerds". I like to think of myself as a nerd but there is a time and place for everything IMO.
Every hardcore nerd loves anime, even though any sensible person would tell you that anime sucks the ****. The only anime that I ever enjoyed was Dragonball Z, the rest are senseless pieces of animated trash with a plot that makes little sense and horrible animation.

nerds love to own any RPG's just because they suck at all other genres.
Honestly, have you ever heard of over-generalizing? Its not that I disagree with your points (I'm not too fond of some anime either) - its just ridiculous how much you like to generalize things. ALL anime can't be bad because you haven't seen them ALL. And I'm sure that some "nerds", as you so eloquently put it, don't see RPGs as their only strong point.

Did you even read my post? My whole point was that you can't trust professional reviewers. Many of the publications that GameRankings includes- EGM, GamePro, IGN, Game Informer etc...- are pure shit and I would certainly trust a whole cluster of Gamefaqs reviews a heck of a lot more than these hacks.

All the nerds I know like FPS, though some also play rpg's, FPS are their favorite. I'm the only nerd I know who favors RPG's and hates FPS's (goldeneye being the only exception).

I like RPGs and FPS (i try to buy all the good ones) but RTS is my favorite genre; where does that put me? I used to hate anime until I got introduced to Initial D in the arcades (which prompted me to watch the anime)...so does that still make me a hardcore nerd?

This is a new feeling...no one has ever called me a nerd before. People seem to think that I'm the opposite.

So what is the average price on VP? I need this for my collection and I found it a a gamestore sort of nearby, but they want 99.50$ for it!!

It seems like e-bay is cheaper then that most of the time?

Would like to try Valkyrie Profile... maybe I'll find it while on my little break.

I tried Rhapsody at the request of my best friend (yes, she has a copy, angry mobs please go to that cliff over there and jump). I hated it, and she loves it. I informed her of the value of this game, then immediately told her to keep it since she can stand to play that game.

I own a complete Star Ocean 2 that I love to death. Old-school style RPGs ARE fun. :)

VP is made by the same people as SO2. You are sure to love it. I would say get it disc only (remember it is a 2 disc game) to try to save money. It's not like you're missing out on anything by not getting it complete.

Valkyrie Profile is one of the best games ever published. It is innovative and fun in every way, from graphics, to gameplay, to story. If your roleplaying skills aren't top notch, you won't even realize that the story has wildly different branches reflecting if you've played the Valkyrie as a loyal servant of Odin or have sought the truth. Anyone who has played this game and hates it must be eating too many paint chips.

Xenogears? XENOGEARS!?

Jeeeeesus, Valkyrie Profile is su much better than Xenogears it's not even funny. It's an insult to VP to compare it to Xenogears.

VP's demand is like Ogre Battle was back in the day. It's different enough from most other games to make it stand out and become desirable.

I got mine for $10 at fye last year, in excellent condition. I played it for a few hours and shelved it.

I consider myself an avid RPG fan. With exception of Beyond the Beyond and Suikoden, I've owned and played every last PSOne RPG there is. With that said I'd say VP is mediorce at best IMO. Yeah sure it's different, but different does not equal good.

If anything VP is sought after because it's the "1337" thing to do. Much like art officinados who seek overlooked art just because it's overlooked, VP is sought after by the RPG elitists simply because outside the core fan base nobody gives a damn about it.

Why I want VP: I played it. I liked it. I want my own copy. It's that damn simple.
Will I pay ebay prices for it? Probably not. But if I ever happen to have enough cash to burn...

As for why people pay so much for RPGs... RPGs don't release like other games, for the most part. There's often less copies of one that the latest GTA about. More important tho', RPGs players get attached to the characters in their games, so they keep the games. I haven't played Wild Arms in years, but you can kiss my @$$ if you think I'm gonna sell it- what'll I do if I get nostalgic for it one of these days?

On top of that, RPGs rarely re-release, and minor ones don't get sequels. I get rid of say, Sonic for my Genesis, I've got a LOT of options to play that again. But that copy of Landstalker with the dead battery I had to return? I have to find another Genesis cart, or I don't play it again. THAT'S how prices get so high. (That's also why we come here. :D )

As for the whole anime thing... anime is diverse. Diverse as American TV. Unless you flat-out hate the look of cartoons, there's one anime out there you will like. As for me, I watch so much anime becuase I love the look of animation. Live action oftens bores me. American cartoons bore me becuase they're made for children. So, I watch anime. There's no need to complicate it.

I agree with everything you said, including the anime part. With the exception of the brilliant cartoons from WB/CN (Justice League, Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond, Superman, Teen Titans) most American cartoons are for children and don't have the style OR substance that the best anime has to offer. Not all anime is good but when it is it's special.

I got my copy of Valkyrie Profile from Wal-Mart awhile back for $39.99. Although I haven't completed the game yet I enjoyed the parts I have played. I love 2D RPG's in general and PS One had some god ones.

Man, five pages in, and it doesn't look like anyone defended the honor of Intelligent Qube yet. IQ is far from a mediocre game. It is one of the most unique puzzle games that I've ever played. It remains simple to play, but difficult to master and it offers a charm that many uninspired puzzle games simply can't offer. I think it's a masterpiece among puzzle games.

I would but I never played it. I didn't want to stoop down to the ranks of the OP by talking about a game I never even played.

covered it..
RPGs don't really require skill, they require patience. A lot of friends hate RPGs "because of all the reading it requires". 9_9

Valkyrie Profile is probably the biggest gap in my PSX RPG Collection, but I don't really miss it. My Suikoden 2 has tied me over, plus, I really had no interest in Valkyrie Profile whatsoever.
Is that game floating in the shitter?!?!

Look at is closely. It's a CD-R with a label printed to look like Suikoden II. There's no artwork on the inner most part of the CD.
Actually, it's not photoshopped.

It's a blank CD-R with a Suikoden 2 skin on it. I'm crazy, but not THAT crazy. ;)

It makes a great conversation starter at forums though.
:)

Did anyone else find the actual game design of VP to be rather uninspired? I mean, every chapter followed the formula of Listen to Someone's Sad Story, Talk to them, have them join you, then do a dungeon. Repeat two-three times a chapter, repeat for a few chapters.

And while the battles were kinda fun, I found myself always using the same characters and everyone else I could have chosen from just fell behind (like in Suikoden or Chrono Cross).

That, and I don't see how it's possible to get the 'good' ending without using a walkthrough (which I still need to do sometime...).

As for why it's so expensive? A fool and his money are soon parted.

Good conversation piece though.

Talking about Raphsody, I just saw one at my local Blockbuster selling for 4.99. Should I leave it or take it? It's disk only though.

I'd love to have Rhapsody. I don't care if it's disc only or not, so I'd gladly pay you the $4.99 plus shipping & travel plus a little more if you'd pick it up for me. Plus you could take a look at my tradelist to see if there is anything there that would interest you.
