Why is everyone hyped for Def Jam: Icon!?

Have you guys SEEN this game?

FFNY got everything right (except the matches were too short).. environment interaction.. easy controls.. create-a-person.. lots of match types.. why couldn't they expand on that and take it online?

In Def Jam: Icon (which btw, the graphics are nuts, even clothes on the person gets messed up), the environment bumps along with the music, and you're encouraged to use the environment to take out your opponent by, as the developer described it, "using the thumbsticks like a DJ would use a turntable" or something to that effect. He then went on to describe how your song could be bumpin', then I could mount a come back, power down your song, then power up mine, and "scratch" along to the beat with the joystick, making the environment kick your ass or something.

What. in. the. fuck? Why did they have to stray so far from the FFNY formula? I think that this game looks like complete and utter trash, but judge for yourself:

(I know there's a "first screenshots of Def Jam: Icon!" thread, but this looks so atrociously bad that I thought it needed its own thread)

That about sums it up. I didn't like the pace of FFNY either, so if AKI couldn't reel me in, I sure don't trust a non-AKI entity doing the game. Moreover, the characters in the game don't appeal to me much at all, either.

Fight for New York strayed away from the first game in the series...

First game of the series was awesome, with the no mercy grappling thing. I dont need to buy black on black violence on a disc, so this one is a no go for me.

i wanted to like the first 2 in the series, but i could not. they played so horrendously.

im hyped for this one. i hope the controls come together.

yea, this game doesn't look that great to me anymore..it's cool to try to involve the music into the fighting, but i think the fighting is too slow and there aren't enough moves...maybe EA is not showing us some of the depth...

just gotta wait for reviews i guess...i loved FFNY

I loved Vendatta. I lloved FFNY. This game just doesn't seem to catch my interest. Music should never have a huge involvement in a fighting game, or any other game but a rhythm game. Even if you did like the music, I could picture you hating it after a while beucase of this. If you didn''t like the music, then you're screwed. They could have done so much with the series on next gen platforms.
^ this sums up my reaction to this thread
yup...me too...i never even heard of it.....

Yeah im REALLY not interested anymore after i saw those clips the other day. I love FFNY and Vendetta was pretty fun.

Thats sooooo disappointing

I really wan the game to turn out good, but Im not getting my hopes up. But I
ll still get the game after a price drop or two.
If you didn''t like the music, then you're screwed.
you can actually import your own music into the game and use your music instead of the music the game comes with since not everyone likes hip hop

Seriously? How will that work with the background? What if I like classical music? What if I like all acoustic music? How ill that work in the game?

Ewww. The bouncing background is too annoying.

I like how he said they got rid of the grappling, and made it more realistic "street fighting" Shit, a real fight is usually all grappling, sloppily rolling around on the ground, trying to get 1 punch in.

This looks and sounds like crap. The music thing sounds and looks horrible. So basically you scratch a bunch with the right analog stick and the BOOM! shit explodes for what looks like no reason. Stupid.

The first game in this series was the best and because of that I still own it. Aki made the first one to perfection, it's just that they left out chairs and weapons and stuff.

Fight for New York took the series in a totally new direction that really did not make much sense, and IMO was just awful. It was playable but in that same sense unplayable based on representation, etc.

I loved the first one, never got NY, and will pick this one up when it gets cheap just because it looks amazing and will be nice for some quick pick up bashing.

I don't know who thought

people who listen to rap = people who watch wrestling

I'm still surprised this became a franchise.

That wasn't AKI, that was mainly EA Canada working with AKI's engine.

This new one is going to be total bullshit. They scrapped AKI's engine to go with some shitty stick based music thing EA Chicago has been working on.

I thought Vendetta was great despite the hip hop presentation. I love Aki's style of fighting game, but it goes best with the over-the-top style of pro wrestling. Fight for New York was playable, but I didn't really get into it. Basically, I want No Mercy 2, and I don't understand why I can't have it.

I actually think fighting games are a great place to introduce some music/rhythm based gameplay, but Icon seems to be going about it in the wrong way. It looks like you basically have one way to use the music, and I can't tell from the video that timing to the beat is even particularly important. If you ask me, a fighting game centered on music should have your attacks being more powerful when performed with the beat. The faster the beat of the song, the weaker the punches, but the faster you can throw them. Play the game to Hungarian Dances No. 5 for an interesting match.

Overall, I'm glad that EA Chicago is doing something risky and innovative, but it looks like it may be too shallow to be satisfying.

the fighting looks so sluggish. i don't get the logic in moving from a fast-moving wrestling engine to a plodding, slow paced boxing engine for a game centered around street fights. i was actually looking forward to this game until i saw it in motion.

The first one had great gameplay and a great roster. Playing the game as DMX was surprisingly fun if you know what I mean. The game had great depth both as a game and a fighter. Solid fight engine as well.

Fight for New York took the game in all kinds of stupid directions that were unneccessary, though it answered fans wishes such as weapons etc.

I have to disagree.

FFNY turned more to a street brawl aspect which was fantastic with AKI's engine and introduced a kickass (dare I say best) career mode.

FFNY played awesomely...controls were tight, nice variety of moves and specials...great gritty look to it, don't know what's not to like?

though i havent personally played the first def jam, FFNY is one of my favorite 3d fighting games ever

I was intrested until I saw that video. The state of American Fighting games is pretty sad if Def Jam is turning into this. I just hope it works out.
You bumped the wrong thread.
Well Linkin's thread looked more like an official thread. This one is just bitching about how bad the game is going to be, etc.

Neh. The first one was pretty much perfect all the fighters were pretty balanced, controls, etc. They only forgot to put weapons in it.

The second one went even more into that urban ghetto rap and pretty much made the game a parody of itself in my eyes. The controls were great and all the standards, but I felt it took away what was great and special about the series.
