4 color rebellion:

Reuters is reporting from Tokyo that Nintendo’s market value, already having edged out Matsushita, is closing in on Sony mighty fast. Here are the numbers:
Sony = 6.64 trillion yen
Nintendo = 6.3 trillion yen
Matsushita = 6.23 trillion yen
Of course, the really remarkable thing here is the difference in what these three companies produce — Sony and Matsushita make everything but hair spray, while Nintendo makes Wii, DS, and gaming software. That equals a whole lotta wow.

Wow indeed.

I don't know how you guys can sit around and say that Nintendo won cause of the 1st year of this next gen war. Its harder to stay number one than it is to become number one.

Is it harder? Is it really?

That aside, you have to come up with a reason for why the trends would change, and when.

Is it too early to call it? Maybe. But dammit, someday, its gonna have to be ripe for calling it. End of 08? End of 09? Surely we dont have to wait till we're on the heels of the NEXT round before declaring a victor.

2010... is a good year.. NIntendo still in this position by 2010, and we should all say that they've won. Maybe 2009... The market can change so quick..

See thats the thing. The market DOESNT CHANGE QUICK. It barely changes at all once the momentum is in place. When is the latest that a momentum change has taken place? Not a position change mind you. It seems that these races are typically massive blowouts.

The big AAA titles arent out yet. A lot of developers havent chosen sides yet. But if the trends havent changed into '08, thats when I'm calling it.

Though I reckon next-gen wont accept defeat until '10 simply because Q4 '09 will be the first Christmas after the end of analog signals, as if that could make any difference at all.

You can say something like, the majority of ps2's were sold after the drop to $199. That may be, but
a) I believe the final trends were already established by then
b) I'm ready to concede that the majority of PS3's wll be sold after $199.

I'm not saying the window is closed for change. The big AAA titles arent out yet. But if the trends havent changed into '08, thats when I'm calling it.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but last time I checked . . .

The PSP is selling just under half as well as the DS overall; it is selling way better in the US than it is in Japan.

Also, there are more 360s currently installed worldwide than there are Wiis, with Nintendo's console selling roughly twice as well worldwide as Microsoft's.

So, while Nintendo's numbers are pretty ridiculously impressive for the time being, they're quite a long way from taking over the entire planet! It's really, really amazing how they've managed to generate so much demand for a home console that has had practically nothing to play for its entire lifespan thus far, and doesn't have nearly as much on the horizon as its competitors.

Let's focus here for a second kids.

Right now, Wii=Success- PS3=fighting a good fight against GBA monthly.

Anything else is speculation and ultimately has a 99.99% chance of being Bullshit. Admit it.

Sony's got a long uphill battle, and Nintendo has a good, comfy cushion against Sony, with Microsoft in sight.

The PS3 is Too expensive for the average consumer. Basically sales are stagnant because of it. Technically, only the 360 and Wii are the only products available to mainstream customers. The 360 isn't even doing that well against the Wii and its in the same price range. I think people are waiting on the ps3 to drop to a reasonable price. That magic '199' price for the ps3 may be 399, or 479, who knows. 08 could be a good time to call it, but by choosing 2010, I was giving sony more time to find their magic price point.. which I don't think they'll find in 2008.

Thomas: I don't care. Sony put the blu ray in, Sony priced it out of the range of the average consumer. Nothing forced them to make these choices. You see the effects. The $199 price isn't going to change just because of a high def drive you need a $500 TV to even begin to take advantage of. Sony takes 3rd this gen in US, 2nd in Japan.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that date. The original cutoff date was '04 which was bumped to '06 and as you see now, 2010.
