Shown at the E3 conference.. comes with a balance board so you can do exercises, yoga, etc..

What does everyone think? I think it's great for the mass (overweight) audience, but meh.. I was hoping Miyamoto would bring an amazing game.. and we get this.

I just want a dev to come out and say they're using that board for their next game. Tony Hawk, SSX, a Surfing game. Back to the Future perhaps?

Yeah Scorch, I was like ok, there's WiiFit now Miyamoto is bringing the big guns...then I found out WiiFit was the big gun...wtf

Sounds like a big gun to me. Imagine how many people out there are too lazy to exercise and lose weight without something to entertain and artificially motivate them in the process (ie: people like me). I like the sounds of it and I will most likely get it when it comes out. It will probably sell millions.

I mean for the casual person yeah, I understand and Nintendo will make the most money by doing this, I was just hoping for one more core game to look forward to for 2008, ya know?

Bollocks. I'll dust off the old DDR pad if this is the kind of bullshit that I want. My wife may dig it, but I would imagine that she'd rather DDR if this is what she's in for. However, she has been into yoga lately.

Who knows, though. Yoga's becoming bigger and bigger, and provided that pad can perform better than the demo, maybe they can capitalize on that.

I think it could go either way in selling tons or being a total bust, but I suspect like most exercise things most that are sold will end up unused.

I mean lets be honest even the hired people playing it didn't give any impression the thing was fun.

Also, let's give credit where credit is due: Nintendo is way ahead of the competition in Center of Gravity and BMI sensing. They just are. Don't try to argue otherwise.

Wow.. this is 'the' software... I know a few friends who were really interested in getting a Wii for losing weight/getting in shape (good luck doing that playing game :) ). All of them are girls who doesn't care about videogame at all....

Nintendo is going for the kill now.. imagine how many 'lay person' outside of the nerdy tech world would respond to this (i.e. Nintendog, brain training..).. wow just wow!

I am probably going to be getting it day 1. It will help me stay active in the cold winter months where I do absolutely nothing but stay inside cause I hate snow and cold. I really hope it performs better than in the demo today. My girl and I could workout together and play Wii at the same time.

On the other hand, since I am not a casual gamer, this really makes me want to finally ditch my Wii. I feel that Nintendo is not catering to my needs as a consumer.

It just didn't look that fun. Even the faux DDR thing looked repetitive and un-engaging. I'm fine with the idea, if it was well-implemented, but I don't see it so far.

Don't focus on just Wii Fit. There's a crapton of other games out.

I mean, the 100 games between now and holidays can't all be casual games.

I made a similar statement upon the Wii's release. It was something to the effect of, "All the games released in the first year can't be minigames and/or GC ports." Whoops.

Wii Fit has been rumored for awhile and we pretty much all knew it was coming. Except for Super Mario Galaxy coming in November I thought the conference was a huge letdown. I was hoping for more games.

DDR Hottest Party is a lot more exciting to me, but they didn't show it. Perhaps they didn't want to take anything away from WiiFit (which wouldn't have been hard!) DDRHP looks really fun and also, from already playing DDR on PS2 and GC, I know it will be a great workout, even more so with the Wimote/nunchuck integration (i.e. arms). In contrast, WiiFit looked boring, and as said by another above, even the demoers looked bored to tears with it. Not a good sign. Not to mention that it didn't work well at all! Still, it will have its market if they can make it work right. For one thing, I imagine my wife might actually like it. She absolutely does not like video games, she won't even play DDR, but she might like WiiFit. Which is precisely who they are trying to market it to.

WiiBoard probably would be great for skateboarding/snowboarding/surfing. They should have had such a game to demonstrate as well, thus targetting both casual and core gamers, instead of just casual.

Oh, and I am looking forward to Zelda on the DS. Looks great.

the game seems to be well done. i'm curious how well a game will do that is mainly only for casuals. with brainage and wiisports, those games are more for everybody. but i doubt that many gamers will actually buy wii fit for themselves.

and i don't like that it was the show ender. i'd like to see a lot more real games.
Yeah Scorch, I was like ok, there's WiiFit now Miyamoto is bringing the big guns...then I found out WiiFit was the big gun...wtf
You guys are completely missing the point. The purpose of ending with WiiFit was to continue to blow people's minds with what the Wii is capable of. That board is a freakin scale...with some kind of pressure grid, that can detect the way you're standing/leaning and translate that into videogames. The possiblities are HUGE!

And as far as "big guns" go...anyone following the live blog should have picked up this VERY bold statement:

9:32 Trinnen says Metroid Prime 3 will be the best blockbuster first-person game this fall.

Um...hello...Halo 3 anyone? They're making serious statements about rivaling Halo 3?? Sounds like a big gun to me!

Also, confirming Super Mario Galaxy's release date was pretty big. And the biggest gun for me (which actually gave me chills of delight) was reading about Mario Kart Wii...with online play...with the official Nintendo steering wheel. Does that not do anything for you either?

Even add this as a little throw in. Unveiling the official Wii Zapper, which will sell for $19.99 AND come with a game. Tell me that game isn't going to be Duck Hunt Wii...go ahead. Now, granted, I'm still not wild about the design, but this is mostly because of the games that are already out that won't benefit from it (RE4). Once shooters are designed specifically with this peripheral in mind...it will be amazing.

There...still feel let down? Maybe it's just me, but I thought this was pretty exciting news. Sure, a lot of it was already rumored/known, but it's still nice to see how these games are coming together.

No No, I'm not saying any of that was bad, they just said Miyamoto was introducing a brand new game, I just did not think that IT would be THAT game, I expected Miyamoto to announce a brand new CORE game, thats all...

Oh, well, I hadn't heard that announcement, so I guess that's why our expectations were a little different. Honestly, I think game developers need time to process everything Nintendo comes up with, to know how to properly utilize it. Starting with the DS, on to the Wii, and now expanding to peripherals like the Wii Zapper and the Wii Board. I think both of these accessories have enormous potential.

Having a dance mat is one thing...the freakin NES basically had that (anyone remember the Power Pad?) That's just button pressing on a mat. But this board...if used properly, it just feels like the future. It's the kind of thing developers hear about, and then need to sit down because it's so mind blowing. And they have to be thinking the same thing we are. Who can't wait for the next Tony Hawk game now? Haha

Well said, n8. I agree. I actually kind of HOPED the big Miyamoto game would be Wii Fit (or a big Mario Galaxy blowout, but I figured we'll get that later in the year). But yeah, completely agreed about the board - how much potential is there for that, wow!

I agree with the potential for the board. Skateboard/Surfboard as already mentioned. What about using it for light gun games similar to Time Crisis, where you physically must move to hide behind walls or crates and poke yourself around corners. It showed that it can detect weight distribution pretty well and I think it would work great and be very immersive. I think there definitely is potential.

Wii Fit looks interesting and it'll sell like crazy. I'll buy it too, but it isn't what I wanted from Nintendo at E3. It should have been a side dish not the motherfucking grocery store. I'd much rather see Nintendo unveil a fully immersive experience that the Wiimote is necessary for then see them toss out another new controller.
I showed it to my girlfriend, and she said she thought it was a stupid idea. You might as well go out and exercise yourself.
Just think of it as a big acheivement! You might as well just play hard mode!
Just think of it as a big acheivement! You might as well just play hard mode!
 too bad you cant see my tag on Xbox Live which is "Achievements are overrated"

On one hand, yes, you might as well go out and exercise, but making it into a "game", to use the word loosely, might get a few more people to do it where they would not have otherwise. If they would go out, there wouldnt be a need for this.

Oh yea, I'm sure it will get some people active, but will they be able to keep their heart-rate up enough to see any results?

I only mentioned my g/f because she would be considered part of the casual crowd this is targeted too.
Oh yea, I'm sure it will get some people active, but will they be able to keep their heart-rate up enough to see any results?
Yea. They will. The target audience of Wii Fit probably overlaps with the people who break a sweat on the third frame on Wii Bowling.

But yea, low impact excersize is till excersize. People just want to make it fun with their Bowflexes and Wiimotes and George Foreman Grills.

When you live in an upstairs apartment, a George Foreman grill is a necessity. Never mind that it makes steaks taste like crap.
I'm pretty disappointed, as I was at least expecting Pikmin 3 or a new IP, but I'll buy this nonetheless. I'm one of the sheep.
At least you're not in denial.

As far as Wii Fit goes, it didn't really catch me as something that great. Of course, I'm probably not the target audience (and most of you probably aren't either).

But, to bring that out as a peripheral means Nintendo must have some ideas for it.

I'm sure the folks that make the Wario Ware games could make us love that scale.

Have they announced a price/date/etc?

Nintendo just knows what the majority/casuals/whatever wants. News sites will pick up on it as the "latest workout craze". They're like the freaking Apple of videogames.

It kinda pisses me off though because like many of you, I just feel like I'm not even their target market anymore. Thank god, I'm multiconsole.

No date, no price yet. - bah, nevermind.

The strategy is to expand the market, then strengthen, IMO. We'll probably see more "traditional, non-casual" games next year. It's like a set of levels. Wii Sports/Wii Fit -> etc. etc.

I like the board, I like what it can do. That soccer minigame was pretty cool on how it detects where your weight is shifted to move the Mii. Games like SSX, Tony Hawk can also start to benefit from the board.

Wii Fit is probably a tech demo for the board, like Wii Sports was a tech demo for the Wiimote.

I'm seriously tired of seeing stuff like Wii Fit. I understand Nintendo wants to boarden it's audience but they're showing this kind of stuff to the wrong people.

Who watch E3? Gamers or grandpas? Gamers. So show us the damn games we'll give a rats ass about. Show crap like Wii Fat in Oprah and AARP Magazine- not at E3.

With that out of the way, I can't see myself getting this. I work out regularly anyway so I don't see why I'd need this.

i'm not interested in this at all as a gamer..but I fully understand the angle.

"What are Americans obsessed with?"

"ummm...mcdonalds...coca cola....oh yeah, losing weight!"

"We'll make a game about losing weight!"

"It'll print money!"

Well as MarioColbert pointed out in another thread, this briefing was not targeted specifically towards gamers either - it's all about the media/press. Granted, I'd assume gaming/tech press who often cater to the 'hardcore crowd' have more of a presence, but the purpose of a media briefing is to basically gain media exposure for what you think warrants it, not to just feed the fury of gamers watching at home. It's a huge venue to show off what you consider to be your most important wares, and for Nintendo, Wii Fit will play a huge role in their strategy.

They spent a great deal of the show pointing out the fact that they've greatly broadened the gamer demographics through 'satellite' pieces of software that have brought in new gamers while still satisfying the traditional crowd. Wii Fit was the ultimate finale to that train of thought. So far, it seems choosing E3 to showcase/debut it has worked. A couple of hours ago, I read articles from the Washington Post and USA Today whose E3 coverage revolved around Nintendo and Wii Fit. Mainstream media appears to be biting on this, just as they have from November on.

Though I will say Nintendo certainly did a heck of a lot to get this gamer-watching-at-home pumped even aside from Wii Fit (release dates on two of what will surely be Nintendo's most important titles of this generation, the rad Galaxy b-roll footage, the Metroid/Zelda demonstrations, the demonstration of using the Zapper with Umbrella Chronicles, etc).
This isn't a game. This is a toy. I play with games, not with toys.
And I have no doubt you also play with yourself. Take the "badass, too cool" fanboy comments elsewhere.

Gee this is only like 10000000 times cooler than "Scene It" with those stupid controllers.

Wii Sex FTW

I think this is Nintendo's "we don't need you anymore" to the gaming world. Don't be surprised when Wiilates is announced in a month.

So, three groups, then:

Those who like it (or see potential)
Those who don't like it (or don't see potential)
Those who insist everyone must like it

Hmm. Must be a Nintendo IP!

Personally, WiiFit is not exercise, IMO. Exercise is exercise, and no amount of 'stepping' will substitute. If, however, the peripheral is used in certain games (in shooters as mentioned above), I'll be interested in buying the WiiFit for the board.

I'd like to see them remake "Slalom" for the Wii and implement this doohickey into it. Get to it, Nintendo!

Fixed.

I'd say the thing that gives me some hope for the balance board was actually the soccer mini-game. Why can that not be adapted to FPS? Screw the shoulder button for peeking/leaning left, I'll do that myself.

But then you actually do have to start standing up to play games, which may or may not be all that fun.

If they can adapt this to allow me to run around my living room and dive behind my couch for cover like in one of the Metroid promos, then I'm sold.

I doubt Wii Fit will end up being as big as Sports and Play, primarily because it just doesn't generally have the obvious fun factor. Yoga is great and all, but I don't think anyone considers it "fun."
