Ahem. ...Kirby Super Star...
As much as I would like this released on the VC, do you really think they're going to cannibalize on sales of the DS remake? I've been anticipating this release for a long time, but I'm afraid we won't see it.

I forgot all about that game, looks great. I loved Squeak Squad, and I recently picked up Canvas Curse.

Oh, that's right, I forgot all about that. with some ridiculous translated name like Kirby Super Mega Awesome Monstrous of Game Making Love on DS System.

I'd actually rather see a DS remake than it go to VC. Same with Mario RPG. :x

Ooooh god!!! Yes yes yes yes yes YES!

I'd like to point out, however, that when I say remake I really mean port, because I think if they change too much about Super Mario RPG it won't be as fun for me anymore, since a lot of it is nostalgia (although a lot is just a really fun game as well).

Gotta grab Lords of Thunder! Now if we could get some Saturn shooters.
Do you think we will see secret of mana, earthbound, or final fantasy 6 come out this year? Must have SNES Star Wars games!

I managed to get and beat a copy of Super Mario RPG this summer for about $40. First, it was worth every penny. So much so, that I wouldn't even regret it if it came out on VC for $8. But secondly, one thing I thought to myself repeatedly while playing it was that the localization was excellent. And none of the gameplay seemed stale. So while I wouldn't mind a DS release with added features/levels, I think a port perfect VC release would be a great favor to anyone who hasn't played it.

I have a question, and only those with an HDTV may answer.
I just recently got an HDTV. I ordered component cables, but they are not here yet. So right now I'm using composite, :(. Now I have my Wii settings to widescreen and it made things look better..but still kinda crappy. I understand the component will make it look better..but inr egards to virtual console games will it help those too???

I haven't played any Wii games since I got my TV, as I was being amazed at how my 360 looks on it. I did play Adventures of Lolo and it was streeeeeetched the fuck out.. :(
So, am I doomed to now have crappy looking virtual console games??

VC games will always look stretched out if you play them in widescreen. 480p will make them look nice, but optimally you'd have to set your display to 4:3.

I AM excited to see these games in 420p (especially N64 games), but that's going to be a pain in the ass to go back & forth switching my settings

But hey, at least there's a way to play them unstretched. Thanks Bott :)

As botticus said you'll have to change the aspect ratio on your TV for the VC games.

It's amazing to me that there's still not a simple way to switch between 4:3 and widescreen on high-end TVs. It should really just be a button on the remote.

There is on mine. I have a P-Size button that goes between 4:3, 16:9 and a couple variations.

Me too. And you shouldn't have to change your Wii settings, liboo. I run through component to an LCD and just change the ratio on the TV itself when playing VC games, which you'll also have to do if you're watching an older TV show on DVD unless you have an HDMI cable.

I wish Nintendo would just add matte on the sides of the VC program if your Wii was set to 16:9 so you didn't have to change aspect ratio on the TV. This would be a great update to the VC, and many people have mentioned it before.

Same here.

Games are up.

I also switch to 4:3 for VC games with the push of a button. What annoys me is the wii dashboard looks crisper in 4:3 for me. In 16:9 there's fuzziness :/

Wooo! LoT time!

Edit: Yowch! 214 blocks! I'm getting pretty low now, and I don't even have that many games. Good thing I got that free after GCO SD card from buy.com.

YAY, Harvest Moon GE. With ONLY 13,000 points to spare

I have a button on my remote too. But I'm not sure what's what. (I JUST got a TV, so I'm totally new to this lol)

I have 1:1 Mode, which makes a really small box with whatever's in it (such as the Wii being on) It looks great, but again.. it's very small.

There's "Aspect". Playing around, this looks best for VC games.. for me at least.
Full Screen, this looks good for my Wii Menu. But what the hell? My Wii Settings are on Widescreen, and I have this set to full screen.. lol Is full screen 4:3 ?

Panoramic looks good too, just more stretched out looking then "full screen"

Then there's Zoom 1 and Zoom 2, which clearly don't help at all.
Will I see a difference with all these things when I get my component cables?

Paper Mario seemed to detect my TV settings when I played it and adjusted on its own for my HDTV. It asked if I wanted to adjust the size based on my TV...did anyone else notice anything like that?

I've been playing Legend of Zelda : Link to the Past and SMB 3 via VC and while both might be somewhat stretched, they certainly don't fill the whole 16:9 screen on my HDTV. They look incredible though, so clear.

"Aspect" is exactly what you want. Your TV will read all signals that aren't HD as 4:3, even if it is a "widescreen" signal (i.e. most Wii games, normal DVDs). Within "Aspect" you should have something like "4:3 normal" (best for VC games) and "4:3 widescreen" (best for Wii games) and maybe "4:3 zoom" (OK for some VC games, but it will cut off some of the top and bottom of the image).

I'm really surprised with all the purists here that so many of you can stand to play your games distorted. If a game or movie is in the wrong aspect ratio, I notice right away and it drives me crazy.

I think you'll find that a good number of us aren't purists. I watch SDTV stretched all day long, prefer it to black side bars.

My roommate does that. Drives me insane as everything looks distorted.

I don't know why the VC doesn't attempt to figure out what mode your Wii is currently set in. I assume it would be easy enough to do. If Wii = widescreen, then VC black sidebars = true.

I can't stand playing VC games stretched out in 16:9 mode. Fortunately I have a button to toggle between 4:3 and 16:9, but it's still a pain to do it before and after I play a VC game.

Well... only some games, others look really awful and I set my television to 4:3 for those ones.

Movies and television however, I view in its original aspect ratio. Animation/Games are a little bit different in the way that it doesn't look too awful if it's stretched a little bit. But when you're dealing with real people and such then no dice.

Only played Harvest Moon for a few minutes today. It's one of those games you have to devote some time too LOL

I only played A Wonderful Life & Friends of Mineral Town. It's funny that games have not really changed that much (so it seems, at least). Can't wait to play it some more. Oh and BTW I've played around with my TV settings and I got the VC games to look good. Of course, not until my damn component cables come :bomb:
i wonder if they'll ever add Killer instinct for the SNES. That game ROCKS! If only we could request games :(
look, eventually, nintendo will run out of ''AAA'' games to release, and start releasing lesser known, but still great titles. I would bet killer instinct will be up some time or the other
Man, Lords of Thunder is hard.

Beating whichever level you pick first is always hard. Afterwards you'll have enough money to deck out your guy for future levels. I recommend spending 200 of your initial 300 money on two extra bombs.

I had sort of forgotten about the whole, "get hit and lose some of your powerups" gimmick. That's annoying.

I believe Killer Instinct is owned by Rare and therefore very unlikely to come to the VC. Maybe doable as a DS port.

Something tells me I've asked this before, but I don't remember the answer so here goes.

How would you describe Paper Mario on the VC? I really liked Super Mario RPG and the Mario & Luigi games. However, I didn't like Super Paper Mario much as it didn't have many RPG elements to it. So is Paper Mario more like Super Mario RPG or is it more like Super Paper Mario? Also, about how long does it take to complete?

I browsed over the IGN review and they made it sound like it's more similar to Super Mario RPG which is great, but I didn't see a time estimate.

Do some armors have advantages over others depending on the level? Or do they have advantages over others just in general? Because I find water to be the best by far.

I use water or fire myself. I don't remember any big advantages over anything relating to armor, just pick the one whose shot pattern is best for you. Earth is my least favorite.

It's more RPG than anything else. You have a party and it's turn based and whatnot. I believe my playtime was at about 18 or 19 hours and I did most of the sidequests, but didn't get all of the items.

Japan's TWO games for this week:
Super Contra (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Cosmo Gang: The Puzzle (Super Famicom, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)

Paper Mario is a turn-based RPG; it's similar to the Mario & Luigi games (i.e. RPG-lite), more so than Super Mario RPG. Super Paper Mario is actually the first in the series to go the action-RPG route.

It's been way too long since I played Paper Mario so I really can't remember its length. But for what it's worth I don't recall it being significantly shorter or longer than any of the other RPG-style Mario games.
