I don't have an EB channel on my Wii because I don't wanna start it on haxed channel and then have to start again when I can go legit. I've already played EB on PC and XBOX, I don't need it as a channel on my Wii right this second. Plus I can play it with the homebrew SNES emulators on Wii. I just said what I said because I'm still waiting to show Nintendo that $8 a pop for something that costs you peanuts to produce can be profitable. Like it's a hard concept to understand.

Gotcha. EB sucks anyway.
However, I hope someone grills Reggie Fils-Aime @ E3 about the pathetic game releases for the VC that's been going out since this year.
Nintendo is up today for E3. I wonder if our savior Lilboo is in LA. If so, I hope he rapes every single Nintendo Cronies over there.

It just amazes me, they spend a hour talking about how they are trying to appeal to the CORE gamers and they make no note to SMRPG, Earthbound, storage issue fix, the thing the CORE gamers want. How fucking stupid can they be?

I think they've successfully bred a new generation of CORE gamers. I'm not sure what the context of the statement you're referring to was, but it is possible that what Nintendo views as CORE is different than what you (or tradition) see as CORE.

I find it extremely alarming that Wii Ware was not discussed at all during the press conference. If we make it through E3 and nothing new is announced, that's a bad, bad sign.

Not discussing VC? I can deal with that, since Nintendo is doing everything in their power to slowly choke all the life away from it.

Not discussing channels? Somewhat less alarming, but somewhat puzzling. They sure seem hyped to release various channels with one function in mind.

No solution to the storage issue? Ho ho ho! And now WiiSpeak takes up a USB port! Huzzah! So if you've got the LAN adapter and you get WiiSpeak, you're fucked! Another win for Nintendo's clueless PR!

And yet they're wearing diapers made of cash while you're swearing into the endless Internet. Yep, they must be clueless.

I do wish there were some WiiWare hints, but I kind of like being surprised each week too.

Speaking of clueless, maybe we should ask my good buddy - who is myself, 2.0 - what he thinks about the situation.

I mean, since he's so smart and all, and holds idiotic vendettas so close to his tiny beating heart that he puts on an entire show about it.

You flip flop too damn much for your own good. You simultaneously agree that Nintendo appears to be run by brainless tugjobs, but you condescend to people who discuss it. Pretty amazing, really.

While I too am excited every Monday morning to turn to CAG to find out my latest Wiiware offerings, I really don't like being let down weekly. Not too many more than a handful of titles have been revealed to be in development for Wiiware, as it is. Then Monday comes, and you and I hold our breath, hoping to God for something good on VC, hoping to Jesus, Joseph and Mary that one of the supposedly quality Wiiware games will burst on the scene. And all we usually discover on Monday is some random, unannounced grime which has escaped quality assurance tests and made its way to Wiiware to only upset the stomachs of minds of gamers.

Honestly, I can't see why it would be so hard for Nintendo to have a release list for upcoming VC/Wiiware titles. The Virtual Console and Wiiware are such founts of potentially bottomless joy and profit that it's difficult for me to understand why Nintendo doesn't stroke it, love it, and hand-feed it Hershey Kisses.

It doesn't really make sense why there's no list, but has the question ever been put direectly to anyone at Nintendo? I was going to say something else, but all this stroking talk totally distracted me.

I'm definitely not thrilled with the press conference. Wii Speak might be nice and I'm probably going to get Animal Crossing, but beyond that...well, there didn't seem to be much.

Getting the Wii as my only console seemed like a fantastic idea before Brawl and Mario Kart, but now that they're out and there isn't much on the horizon, the 360 is sounding more and more appealing.

The lack of DS announcements (aside from GTA) didn't sit well with me either, but that's not really the topic of discussion here.
just saw the E3 conference.

If the DS can handle Ninja Gaiden, I don't see why GTA wouldn't work on the system.

I know what you mean. I've been considering a 360 for about half a year. The only thing really holding me back is my television, which would not capitalize on the 360's graphical prowess. And now that Final Fantasy XIII is going to be on the 360 too, it makes choosing between the axis powers easier.

Graphical prowess isn't even an issue for me - my TV can barely take advantage of my Wii's graphics.

Halo and Gears of War aren't very appealing to me, but there are plenty of titles I'm interested in. I haven't played Bioshock or anything in the Orange Box, for instance (laptop's not powerful enough to meet the minimum specs :whistle2:(), and I'd love to get Rock Band, which I'm not going to bother with for the Wii because of the lack of the DLC library. The problem is that $350 for another console plus who knows how much for games is way beyond my "broke college student" means.

I was hoping for a REAL price cut. Taking your older model and dropping the price by $50 until you clear it out of inventory doesn't count.

E3 as a whole has been a whopping letdown this year.

For the time being, I've still got my Wii...but I'm not sure how long my GameCube backlog and WiiWare and VC titles will last. If this year was any indication, they'll have to keep me busy for a long time.
Speaking of upset stomachs - how is the online play in Major League Eating?
I connected online with Major League Eating tonight. I tried yesterday, but I kept getting error codes that I don't think were related to my internet connection. Anyway, tonight it connected fine. After creating a username (which is really only a leaderboard name, as you still play as the in-game characters named as they are), you can either play a friend or look for a match. Since it seems practically no one here has the game, I went to Look for Match. It seems to time out after two minutes or so, and after about four tries, I was finally matched up with someone.

You can choose from pretty much any character. It appears the ones you unlock in single-player area available to play online, although there was still one character that remained shaded and I didn't try to pick him. I doubt it would have let me. Once you pick the character you want to play as and your opponent picks theirs, you enter a random match. You don't know what food you're going to be eating, so hopefully you know "how" to eat them all, as not all the foods are simply lift your hand to your mouth kind of eating.

Unfortunately, my first game froze in the last 30 seconds, and the only way to reset was to get up and unplug my Wii.

When I reconnected, it took at least one more two more match searches before I got matched again, and I played about four rounds, losing all but 1. There doesn't appear to be any kind of text interaction, but really, the pace of the game doesn't leave time for talk. Before and after messaging could have been implemented, but really, I guess there's no need.

There was a little lag sometimes it seemed, but not during the actual eating part. More like during transitions to the special screens (Hot Potato and Burping Contests) and during the final tally at the end of the match.

Quite amusing really, and surprising to have online play. I doubt you would have much luck getting matched with an opponent during the middle of the day, as it doesn't appear many people have this game yet. Before I even played a match, I was number 109 on the leaderboard. After losing 3 matches and winning 1, I was number 49.

Ouch. Maybe this is why Nintendo didn't talk about WiiWare at the press conference. :whistle2:k

I know the game's only been out for two days, but those are PATHETIC numbers.

The top down version for the GBA was rather fun, a nice throwback so thats an option, but I assume like Ninja Gaiden it will be a 3d affair.
I know the game's only been out for two days, but those are PATHETIC numbers.
I agree that it's pretty bad, saying that I was simply the 109th person to go online with the game last night. Still, that doesn't equate to the actual number of owners, as not everyone will go online with the game. But I have to think that online play would represent at least a 3rd of the quantity of people that have the game. I mean, if you can already connect to the Wii Shop, likely you have some sort of internet connection for your Wii.

But a game like this...five months from now, will there be anyone online to play?

Check the deals forum. You can get a refurb 360 for $199.

Played Major League Eating for a bit this afternoon. I tried playing with the character Crazy Legs for a change (no obvious reason why he's called Crazy Legs, as you only see all the characters waist-up). I'm not sure, but it looks like his "ability" is that his stomach is larger and he's able to pack more food in before needing to settle it and thus not activate mighty upchucking powers.

One thing I haven't really given love to is the game's graphics and sound. Honestly, this game belongs right up there with Lost Winds, My Life as a King, Toki Tori, and Dr Mario. It's quality, and we just don't have enough of it on WiiWare. The graphics are crisp and distinct. Each character has specific movements and expressions which define them, and the sound effects are fun and appropriate. I can't imagine the workday life of the person tasked to make the best burping, farting, and spewing sounds, but I'm sure there's some stories there.

The game A.I. is pretty good. Well, honestly, very good, as I haven't yet beat the game. Each time you beat the game as one character, you unlock a new character, then you can beat the game with them and unlock another, I assume. I believe there are ten characters overall, but you only start with four.

It's a hard game to describe, I admit, as it requires you to put aside all social inhibitions and admit to yourself, "Why yes, I do believe I would like to blast clouds of noxious gas on my opponents from my nether-cheeks." But once you tie on that apron and get to munching, the quality shines through.

Seriously, someone else needs to get it so we can play online and I can throw up on you. This is mandatory.

When I get around to it (maybe not until -next- Sunday, I'm leaving soon) I'll try out MLE from my usual sources. I'll be glad to play online with you unless MLE is complete and utter shit, which it doesn't look like.

Gradius Rebirth announced for WiiWare

It's only been a matter of hours since the end of Konami's E3 Media Briefing on Wednesday afternoon, and already the company has made a new announcement that wasn't mentioned at all at the conference – Gradius is coming back. The side-scrolling shooter series is being reborn with a new installment made for WiiWare, appropriately titled Gradius Rebirth.

This is the latest in a series of retro revivals to get the digital download treatment, and follows in the footsteps of recently announced and highly anticipated games like Capcom's Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Mega Man 9. Gradius Rebirth appears to be taking a direction in development more similar to the former of those two titles, updating the classic gameplay with new, more modern visuals and not going for the intentional retro-pixel look that Mega Man's employing.

GradiusRebirthInline_1216284622.jpg

We've only got this single screenshot so far, but hey, Moai heads confirmed!

It's not known yet whether Gradius Rebirth is an all-new installment in the Gradius series or a remake. Its name could be taken to mean a "rebirth" of the very first Gradius game, or it could mean just a rebirth of the series in general. The Gradius franchise hasn't seen a new installment since Gradius V arrived on the PlayStation 2, and that game came out almost four years ago now.

Stay tuned to IGN for more information and details on this classic shooter series revival as it becomes available. Until then, considering checking out the Gradius editions already available for download on Wii – the NES original Gradius and the SNES sequel Gradius III are both available in the Wii Shop right now.
Which is better for getting into the series? Gradius or Gradius III?
I dunno. Gradius is very dated at this point and the NES port isn't great. At the same time, Gradius III is really, really hard.

I'd recommend the Gradius Collection if you have a PSP.

Of the existing ones, I like Gradius V the most. It doesn't totally cripple your ship when you die.
where is my strong bad!!!
Agreed.

It was originally a June title. I'm leaving the damn country for two weeks on Wednesday, and I had hoped I could speed through it before I left.

I bet it's delayed until August now...

I tagged that a while ago, when you changed your avatar from your normal cheese one.

I still want my Tetris and Bomberman WiiWare titles. :whistle2:?

I'm probably going to get into the series with the WiiWare title. Hope it's good...

Star Parodier and Break In on Monday.
Has anyone here played Star Parodier? I love the Parodius games and anything that's got a giant flying Bomberman as a playable character (like this apparently does) is okay in my book, but I've never played this title before.
where is my strong bad!!!
Those are VC games. Strongbad wouldn't be on that list. :whistle2:s
shut up.

you guys like any of these?

The second and third ones aren't bad, but I think I prefer the third one more.

Probably should've put this in my last post, but meh.

It's been a while since I've gotten something from WiiWare. I don't think I'm quite ready to start another playthrough of My Life as a King, so I'm thinking I might get the Bonk games. :whistle2:k
Classic. :applause:

God they need to release that show on DVD.
I'd buy it. :)

I'm just happy that we're FINALLY getting Freakazoid on DVD this summer, although they split it up into two sets when they could've released both seasons together. The show only had 24 episodes to begin with...

Can.

Not.

Wait.

Didn't know they were split up. That sucks, but eh.

I saw them being advertised in-store at Target and started running around all giddily.

*whoosh!*

Blogs aren't always the best source, but this is where I read that it's being pushed back.

Tiny Toons is coming out at the same time as Freakazoid, if memory serves, so I might pick that up if I can find a decent sale. Eventually, I'll need to finish my Pinky and the Brain set and get the Animaniacs sets, but I've still got to worry about things like "student loans" and "food." :whistle2:?

Kids WB kicked ass back in the early and mid nineties. Same for the old Disney Afternoon stuff. Why aren't cartoons that awesome anymore?

Anyway, to get us back on topic: even though I still have it, I'd buy the NES Tiny Toons platformer in a heartbeat if it hit the VC. Good graphics and controls, four characters who played differently from each other, and a good license - what else could you want? :)
