Wii Shop Thread: ***FINAL FANTASY 3 IS OUT ON THE VC***

Aw, that's a shame about the overworld.

Are the levelling and promotion mechanics the same? I enjoyed all the promotions and stuff, but dealing with alignment and leadership stats was a bit of a pain...

I'm not far enough to say for sure but alignment does raise and fall based on battle outcomes and the like. At this point, I'm not aiming for any specific ending (so I'm not really paying attention to alignment, when to liberate cities, and the like), I think I'll be happy enough to finish it once and move on.

When it comes to promotions, they still happen but with the added requirement of certain equipment for higher classes. For example, you could have an Amazon that is high enough level to be promoted, but if you don't have the appropriate set of gear for her, you can't do the promotion. Fortunately, the equipment shop between missions sells the required gear for at least the basic classes.

IRONCLAD
Original platform:
NEOGEO
Publisher: D4 Enterprise
Players: 1-2
ESRB Rating: E10+ (Everyone 10 and Older) – Fantasy Violence, Mild Language
Price: 1,000 Wii Points
Description: IRONCLAD is a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up originally developed by SAURUS in 1996. You operate a warship and team with the mighty Iron Clad in order to fight the Iron Mask Republic and save the Kingdom of Chop. The biggest appeal of this game comes from discovering all the ways you can attack your enemies. Your weaponry includes three main blast weapons upgradable by collecting more items, a charged attack you can use when Iron Clad is attached to your ship, three types of melee weapons you can brandish to show off your strength in close-range combat, a bomber that clears all enemy bullets, and shooting patterns that change based on whether the Iron Clad is attached or disconnected from your ship. A vast array of weaponry lies waiting to become part of your arsenal. You can even select the stages you want to play, feeding your hunger for combat and allowing you to see different endings for each play-through.

Wow, Ironclad is an odd addition. I think it's the first import Neo Geo title but with the complete lack of regional coding on Neo Geo games, I never really thought of any of them as imports. Playing the Neo Geo CD version of Ironclad on a US Neo Geo CD made the game run in English. Bring on Pulstar.

Ok, Ok. Maybe I will pick up Cave Story, but I do hope they release an update to fix the audio problems. I would like to hear the new soundtrack. We're in part paying for it, so it ought to sound right.
Cave Story is great. That is all.
It's more than great. I intend to write a post about it, but the words haven't quite come to me yet, and I want to do it justice.

I've been considering getting Cave Story myself after watching a few videos, although I'm a little dismayed by the audio issues. Are the audio issues only with the new graphics/music or the original graphics/music?

Honestly, what audio issues are people talking about? I beat cave story- and it sounds great! The only issue (maybe this is what people are referring to) with the audio is that when you shoot and then pause, it still sounds like your shooting for two or so seconds.

I would rate the game a 9.5 / 10. It is really a great WiiWare game, and it will be looked at as a shining example of WiiWare once the Wii is said and done.

Pure gaming bliss.

Yeah, I had 0 sound issues. I knew that I could wait and see if they allow the fix to go through for whatever the hell is wrong with the music, but I couldn't wait to play this, and I don't expect Nintendo to ever do it here. I read a bit about freezing on GameFAQs, but I didn't get any of that. I wish there was more optional collection to do, but I can't complain.

The tinkling sound the
doritos
experience pieces make is a bit high and tinny, borderline annoying, and crunchewy seemed to imply that the problem is that its sound file was recording with much-too-high volume. I didn't really notice any other issues with sound effects overall, other than I'm skeptical that Pixel made all of them from scratch, since a few sound extremely close to Sega Master System games.

Cave Story, I think, is Wiiware's closest answer to Braid, even more so than World of Goo was/is. It's an important game - old school in nature and appearance, with classically styled - but very good - gameplay. I do agree it is a bit short, and like pete, wanted more optional collecting. I feel, though, that it holds up so well even against most current retail games, because it manages to do so much with so little. Solid mechanics with charming characters and a brutal story. It just manages to tug the heartstrings even as you're having so much twitchy fun.

It's just this tragically beautiful game. It's that simple. Easily one of the best games on the service. If you don't have the points, go download it off the 'net and play that version. You really owe it to yourself.

I do wish you had a shooting stance, i.e. Megaman. It just looks a little odd to me that the guy is so still the whole time. Not really a complaint though.

This week, Europe got 1 VC game and 2 WiiWare games, Blaster Master - NES/500 Points, Learning with The PooYoos: Episode 2 - WiiWare/500 Points, and Zombie Panic in Wonderland - WiiWare/1000 Points.

There's actually a few secret things you can collect in Cave Story. Although they're usually one and done deals and aren't necessarily for your benefit.

The sound problems were specified by the dev team. The sound effects volume is way too high - they say to set sound effects to 1/3 volume and that will effectively fix that, so no big deal there. The new sound track is missing parts such as drum parts and I think they mention other problems. Basically the new sound tracks is not what it is supposed to be. People who have played the original found the new soundtrack lacking in comparison, but it turns out that is because it is messed up. The European release will apparently have fixed audio so they'll get proper sound effects level and the new soundtrack in all its glory, which we are missing out on. Unless they give us an update.

EDIT: also it was mentioned that the dev team had asked for a sound check before release, but for some reason it wasn't done, or was not done well in any case! I believe I saw all this stuff on nintendolife.com, but it might have been siliconera.com. I'm drawing a blank now.

Zaxxon
Original platform: Arcade
Publisher: SEGA
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone) - Mild Fantasy Violence
Price: 800 Wii Points
Description: Travel back to a time when a lovable alien phoned home, gas cost a mere 90 cents a gallon and everyone was wearing high-tops, leg warmers and had big hair. This was the early '80s, and this was when video gamers nationwide were wowed by the cutting-edge graphics and sound effects of the first three-dimensional-like intergalactic arcade shooter: Zaxxon. Touted as the first game to put video display in perspective, Zaxxon featured "looks" and "sounds" like actual aircraft flight, allowing players to command their ship just like a real fighter pilot. Dive, bank, fly left and right, and up and down - Zaxxon had it all. Fly through heavily armored space fortresses while strafing fuel tanks, dodging walls and blowing up enemy missiles and gunnery. This game is littered with explosions. Then take the fight to the enemy fighter fleet and destroy the aggressor ships with extreme prejudice. Blasting pixels has never been so fun.

Zaxxon is a game that only has nostalgia going for it.... actually... for me it doesn't even have that. I hated it back in the arcades. Just couldn't get used to the whacky 3D perspective. It was almost entirely about fighting the perspective for me, a fight I didn't care to deal with.

I am currently playing Max & the Magic Marker, and I am not impressed at all. I find the game to be more of a chore, than fun. Really, really disappointing.

WarioWare D.I.Y Showcase, and Cave Story are great though. The latter being superb.
Oh wow, Zaxxon. I think I played a C64 port of it once. I'd like to play it once or twice again, but not for 800 points.
I was so excited when I saw Zaxxon... but I thought it was for the DSI (since the pictures were super tall) and it seemed like a perfect pick up and play game.

Then I saw it was for the Wii.

Then I saw it was 800 points.

What is Nintendo smoking??? :( Instant buy at 500 or less but 800 seems pretty high, even though IMHO it's a classic game.

Want to have some fun? Watch Kikoskia's Let's Play of Stonekeep. Dood is HILARIOUS. He's like an incredibly nice and more patient Yahtzee. I actually want to splice together all the funny shit he says and does into one movie.

(I'll try to find a good one. Give me a few minutes.)

Hmmm. Thanks for all the Monday updates.

That Zombie Panic looks interesting, although could become boring very quickly.

As for that Kung Fu Funk, I think they really need to cut back on the shovelware. I'd rather have a few quality titles once a month, than constant cow dung every Monday.

I just beat Max & the Magic Marker. Very MEH. I knew I said it was nothing special before, but I wanted to beat it to see if it got any better. My least favorite WiiWare game purchase.

The music was okay, the visuals were okay, but the gameplay was a chore.

5/10

Did the controls work well? I played it on pc and the controls were fine, but it was still very much meh. (Too easy, no puzzle variety, great for a kid I imagine)

I thought the controls were fine.

The best level in the gmae was by far the final level. It was the only fun level, though you did not have to draw much at all in it, haha.
