silly question but....

does installing a sd card to the wii u expand memory for games? or is it just for saves and such?  Whats the max a wii u can hold?

Thats real helpful :D thanks Nintendo!
It's generally always been 11 p.m. central time for me, whatever that means (so midnight eastern, I guess?). Doesn't mean it will be this time, but is always has been before.

You can use it for everything. SD cards aren't recommended for actually playing stuff from, though, nor are USB drives. Who knows. But you can sure use it to put stuff on, which is what I use my 32GB USB flash for until I can get an HDD.

Speed limit for USB is 2.0 (dno speed limit for SD); size limit should be 2 TB across the board unless they remove that limit later.

What? I thought the SD card was only for Wii mode?

DK download is 11-12GB.
Holy. fucking. Shit.

Is this real? How in the fuck is a 2D platformer weighing in at over 11 gigs? I'd make a joke about fur texturing but fuck... I don't even know how to comprehend this. I mean that's what, 3 times the size of Pikmin 3? 10 times the size of NSMBU? I mean fuck, that 3D Sonic game was only 9GB wasn't it?

I refuse to believe that Retro sucks that badly at optimization/compression.... why is it so big? I mean is this somehow a 3D platformer and every trailer ever has been a lie or what? Are we certain that isn't 1.1-1.2 GB?

USB storage only, I believe:

  1. Can I use an SD Card to save game data on the Wii U system?
    • For Wii U, SD Cards can be used for saving a picture of your Mii and QR Code patterns for your Mii, but not as an external storage device for Wii U software. SD Cards can, however, be used in Wii mode to save data for Wii games. This data is managed through the Data Management feature in Wii mode. SD cards are also used to transfer data from Wii to Wii U.

Whether it's a "2D" platformer or a 3D one, it's still rendered using textured 3D polygons, and those textures are what take up the most room, I'm assuming.

Either way, yep, that's big, but you folks wanted HD, and you got it man.

I'm feeling the need for an external HDD pretty badly. :/

Yeah, I forgot the 3D polygons. Still..... 11 gigs seems really, really big for what we are getting based on the trailers and whatnot.

I was considering just downloading some games with all the sales on these eshop cards and the DDP but buy the time I bought an external I wouldn't really be saving any money (unless there's a way to share the external with my PS3/PC?). Besides, with Nintendo's archaic account system there's no real benefit to digital anyways, and after downloading Tekken and Wii Fit U I doubt I have any memory left

What's Rayman Legends like for install size? (I'm too lazy to check, sorry--kind of a rhetorical question anyway) That's a gorgeous game and totally 2D, literally 2D, but I would imagine it's pretty hefty as well. And after all, the textures on the polygons are just 2D images pasted onto 3D shapes.

But yeah, I still agree--seems enormous. And I don't think NSMBU is too huge, for comparison-sake... Hmm!

Looking on Google - Rayman Legends is around 6.8 gigs. NSMBU is 1.69gb. DKCR is 2.1 GB (honestly no idea how the 3D effect weighs into that on the 3DS though)

I knew this would weigh in heavier than NSMBU, but I was expecting around 5gb or so max. Now I'm curious how much DKCR weighs in on Wii but I can't seem to find that :whistle2:|

Wow.  So it's twice as big as Rayman Legends and about a billion times larger than NSMBU.  I would expect it to be about the size of NSMBU really....  Maybe it's a typo after all.

New Super Mario Bros. U doesn't really do anything that's graphically intensive enough to be that big of a game. Tropical Freeze seems like it's the best looking game on the Wii U with everything they've talked about on that front, so I'm not that surprised. It looks like it'll compare to Giana Sisters, which is a crazy huge indie platformer at 3.5 GB and TF will have much more to it than that game.

If you've played the original and seen videos of tropical freeze you will notice there is a ton of details that have been added in the environments. On the surface people say the game is just an hd dckr, but they fail to see the shit ton of content packed into each of these new levels. Just watching some of the previews you can tell that a lot more work had done to massively improve off the original level designs. Not suprised the game is so large in file size, although I'll probably stick to the disc version now.

I can't fathom what's even done with all that data.  I don't understand how textures and audio could take up so much space.  I'm baffled right back to MS-DOS and my 7 mb copy of Monkey Island 2 on 5.25" floppy disks.

:/ might as well do a permanent price cut..
That would probably mean doing a permanent price cut everywhere else it's sold, including Steam. And that would be stupid since it seems to be selling great on every other system.

So I started using the Wii Fit U free version about 24 days ago, according to... a thing.  Today I just linked up a Fit Meter.  I don't plan to actually use Wii Fit U or the Fit Meter much (or at all) yet, because it's really, really cold out.  Once spring hits, I'll probably use it.

Given I linked a Fit Meter, it said I can now keep using it after the free trial expires.  However, I notice I don't actually "own" the full version of Wii Fit U.  So does this mean if I ever delete it, I just download the trial version again and it'll work?  Or does it mean that if I delete it, I have to buy the full version?

They structured this whole deal kind of screwy.

I've wondered that myself and haven't been brave enough to try it.

I thought about moving it onto my USB drive, taking the drive out, and seeing what happened and what it allowed me to redownload and if it would work or not.  :/  I don't know if I want to risk it.

Probably no room anyway with my fully expanded Donkey Dong on there.

The new deal for this week:

Knytt Underground - $6.99 - 46% Off - Ends 3/3

New this week is My Farm for $7.99 and Renegade on the NES Virtual Console for $4.99.

Noticed some new deals on the eShop:

Assassin's Creed III - $19.99 - 50% Off - Permanent Price Drop

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist - $39.99 - 33% Off - Permanent Price Drop

They seem to be permanent price drops since there's no end date listed, but that's never stopped them before.

If you're interested in trying out Hulu Plus, there is a one month trial available in the eShop where you sign-up at huluplus.com/mynintendo first, then grab the app from the eShop, sign-in, and enjoy. It's also available for the 3DS if you'd prefer to use it there instead.

There don't seem to be any new deals besides the two mentioned above.

New this week are Blok Drop U for $1.99 and NES Open Tournament Golf for the NES VC for $4.99.

I don't suppose the ACIII DLC dropped in price did it? I know multiplayer was DoA, but I wouldn't mind tackling the King George DLC.... just not at those prices.

I can't confirm this in any way, but from what I've read on other forums, if you unsync your meter you will lose the trial. If you delete the game you can reinstall it, but if you delete your saved data (and therefore your meter sync) you won't be able to do a damn thing with it. Basically it'll just eat up space. Knowing Nintendo I'm surprised you could reinstall the game at all without paying full price.

I can tell you that, after getting fed up with the system's bullshit, I disconnected my WiiU from the Internet, and it still unlocked my Wii Fit U afterwards. So it does look like the game unlocks on your system without any interaction from the eshop. I'm not sure if there's anything stopping somebody with the trial from just copying over the save of somebody with a Wii Fit U meter and using that to unlock the full game?

I'm curious.... when you go to the WiiU eshop page and pull up Wii Fit U, does it ask you to pay money or does it say you've already bought it?

And for what it's worth, don't waste your time with that piece of shit meter. You'll get more accurate readings from a random number generator :whistle2:?

That's scary! I was going to delete all my data and start from scratch but it sounds like I can't do that.

The Wii Fit I have downloaded is the "trial," not the actual full game. So the full game still says "purchase". If that makes sense.

I have to say I think the readings from the Wii Fit U are a little high, there is no way I am burning 23 calories just from doing 5 min of Burning Beats.. I barely even break a sweat doing that, and I am fat and I am doing it in a 72-73 degree room. Plus I am doing everything just as the game said and not cheating. The hula hoop also seems to make me burn an insane amount of calories, even though again I am barely sweating during the exercise.

I am not going to argue with it, because it is fun, and it makes a nice bathroom scale, but I doubt the calorie readings are accurate. I can only hope the scale is accurate, it was on the original Wii Fit since I tested it with the scale in my doctor's office.

I would like to hear from a fitness expert on the merit of the calorie readings though... it would be interesting to find out how inflated they really are.

They seem to have fixed the main problem with Wii Fit which is lack of activities, this one is fun and it has more than enough to do in it. I don't see myself getting bored anytime soon at all so it was worth the $20 meter, though the meter was extremely hard to find, had to order online. They seem to be in stock in my area now though, a little too late for the offer. Its been worth it for me since I only spent $5 on the balance board and $20 on the meter so that is about the price of a bathroom scale and does a lot more. The console doesn't count as I would have bought that anyways.

Shameless plug: If you download the Hulu app and dig travel or history, check out the Hulu series Up to Speed. Its weird and fun and yours truly did all the animation for it. More views means more interest in a second season which I'dd love to do, join the cruise.

I don't think 23 calories for 5 minutes is unreasonable or inaccurate.  That would be 276 calories in one hour...as a comparison an hour of brisk walking is in the 300-400 calorie range.

My wife uses both the Fit Meter and a regular pedometer and the Fit Meter consistently records a slightly lower number of steps, which I think is accurate because it doesn't record exercises like squats as being steps whereas the regular pedometer does.  Either way, it's one more piece of motivation to move more which is a good thing for pretty much anyone.

The Pokewalker, which the fit meter was based off of, was actually found to be one of the most accurate pedometers available at the time and didn't have inflated numbers like many of the much more expensive models. It was some big name east coast college that did a study on them if I remember right. Too lazy to Google it right now.

I use both as well but I find that often the poke walker messes up because a button gets pressed or something. I know it's accurate but I am not sure about the fit meter. Also the Wii fit keeps track of your calories, you aren't supposed to wear the meter while doing Wii fit U that would be double dipping.

I guess I was a bit surprised that I burn almost 500 calories on just a trip to the mall

The new deals for this week:

F1 Race Stars Powered Up Edition - $14.99 - 50% Off - Ends 3/19

Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures - $19.99 - 33% Off - Permanent Price Drop

The only new release this week is Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels for $4.99.

I think I'll pick up Runner 2, I enjoyed the first one but found the lack of checkpoints within the levels frustrating.  I see the second one has checkpoints and $5 is a good deal.

I never even finished the game and still feel I got the $15 of enjoyment out of it. It's really well done.

Eshop has Darksiders II, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy on sale for 20 bucks. Since those are all THQ games... who's getting the money and who's making the decision to put them on sale?

Here are the new deals for today:

Darksiders II - $19.99 - 66% Off - Ends 4/1

Jeopardy - $19.99 - 60% Off - Ends 4/1

Wheel of Fortune - $19.99 - 60% Off - Ends 4/1

I've been wanting to try Darksiders on disc so I can dump it if I don't like it, but with discounted eShop credit and no retail price drop in sight, this might be the way to go.

I would definitely get it from the eShop while on sale as I have heard there were some bad discs released on this game that could cause you some issues, sorry I don't have a source it was something I read quite a while ago. I am definitely getting it from this sale.
