I found this to be rather funny.

Woman arrested for deleting savegame
A Japanese woman was arrested for wiping her boyfriend's save game data…
The jilted girlfriend, said to be in her thirties, logged onto her ex-lover's Lineage account with his username and password. Once there she deleted his game data including all the items, weapons and clothes he had collected.

Although the boyfriend did not suffer financially he reported the misuse of his account to the police. Police then reported the woman of Toyama Prefecture, to the Fukushima District Public Prosecutors Office accusing her of violating a law banning illegal access to someone else's online accounts.

The woman has admitted the crime. "I did it as revenge for breaking up with me," she told police.

The couple actually met through playing the game, love blossomed in the online RPG and the lovers soon met up. However the relationship did not last long and thoughts turned to revenge.

Imagine having your save games held ransom by a jilted lover. A treasured memory card held over a fire, "you better not break up with me or the Final Fantasy VII save gets it." Scary. Very scary.

Really really pathetic.
...

If that's the revenge, that woman should get arrested for being so damn uncreative. :p[/quote]

whaddya mean? that's very creative....its just......weird, that's all :p

Damn, I know it's only a game save, but I feel like that woman should get fucked over for that. They should fine her a shit-load.

You're all idiots. It's just a game save, yeah it would be a pain in the ass, and yeah i'd be pissed, but come on. They broke up, and nobody was physically harmed, so be done with it. If anything, there should be a small fine for this.

If I delete my own game saves, could I be considdered a threat to my own well being?

You've never played an MMORPG then. It's not the end of life, but after putting in hundreds of hours, you'd be pretty pissed.

Edit: Considering that they met through the game, that says something about the way they live (or don't live).

They should throw her off a cliff for doing that. Now the poor guy has to start all over in Lineage. No wonder he broke up with her....SHE CRAZY!!!!!

I think there would be some serious repercussions for someone getting rid of my DDR data (all unlocks on all 3 PS2 games) and/or my Culdcept save (250+ hrs. all cards and medals). I worked so much for these particular sets of data. I would shed a small tear to lose them and have to start over. :(

All the other stuff on the card, no biggie. It would allow me a reason to replay them.

seriously, of course its just a game and you should get over it, which you will. but if we are being honest here, most of us probably have more hours logged onto memory cards than with family members or girlfriends or schoolwork or anything else of major importance. it would be like burning an artist's life work, one that he has invested hundreds of hours in and too much money on to just sit there and not let it bother him when its gone. sure that sounds pathetic, but its true, and i would be fucking pissed if someone threw away something i worked so hard on. wouldnt you?

Well, she didn't specifically get charged for deleting the game save -- but only unauthorized access to the account. I guess kinda like cyber-burglary.

Your Avatar pretty much sums up what I'm feeling about this topic..

I wonder what the police did when the guy called into the station? I know if in the United States I ran to the police office and reported that a psychiotic ex girlfriend deleted my online saved game, they would laugh me right out of the precint. Definitely a different world.

I'm not afraid to admit that losing my save data would really REALLY piss me off. It's a psychological
attack.
Same here. Even if I NEVER play that savegame again, it's just knowing that I spent so much time on it (I'm talking about a Final Fantasy- or KOTOR-esque save... you know, a 60+ hour one). And if it was a savegame that I was currently playing? Oh, the horror!

Like said before this isnt a memory card. Its an account and by items and clothes it could be millions of gil(if final fantasy xi) and rare items that are very hard to get dropped. Not to mention the months of leveling and all the quest done. There is a very big difference between a memory card that can be backed up or done over relatively easy and a game that you pay per month. Its not a savegame that you will never use again its an ongoing thing and he might have lost even a years work of play due to that pyscho woman  !

MMORPGs arent 60 hours plus, they are more like 60 days plus and if they met through the game you can tell that the put a BIG amount of their lives into it.

So yeah if my gf deleted my final fantasy saves i would get over it pretty quickly, i beat the game or got close to it and it only cost me 50 bucks. If its a game ive paid like 10 dollars for a month on top of the 50 bucks it cost

For some reason, that word weird brought to mind that story in the news a while back where the girlfriend slept with her boyfriend and then cut off his wang

I should report Sony to the police for deleting all of my PS2 save data.

Seriously, nobody sees anything wrong with this? It was fucking data, and nothing crucial. She didn't steal his credit cards, drivers license, or anything else, just fucked with a game of his.

We aren't dealing with American law, so there are tremendous cultural nuances getting in the way of our understanding of it. Furthermore, with intangible property becoming more and more prominent in all industrialized nations, some legal precedents will have to be put into place eventually.

That having been said, that does not mean that I agree with it at all.

myke.

I had a friend get his memory card deleted by that ridiculous Sony Holiday Disc. He was big on EQ at the time and depended entirely on his memory card for his account info... Not to mention he had to redo all the updates...

That's exactly how I see it. You aren't going to get this shit back through Gameshark.

I used to lock my Dreamcast VMUs in a safe, they had precious PSO data on them.

I was afraid someone would break into my house and delete my characters.

This was when a friend of mine (also a PSOer) started smoking pot, and I completely exiled him from my life.

he should of locked up his account better... I had someone do this to my With authority game (Online wrestling card game) about 2 years ago. I was laughing so hard when i told them that the cards are worthless since the game went belly up ( the server was still online but the Company didnt support it anymore so the cards were worthless) Did kind of suck Having around 1,000 bucks in online cards turn worthless over night.... This is one reason why i refuse to put major money in online games COUGH COUGH MAGIC ONLINE
