WTH Sony!! Now you're charging me sales tax on PSN purchases!?!?!?!

I just went to buy one of those 50% off games that have been advertised for almost a week now on the PS Store and when I went to finalize the transaction I noticed it's now charging me sales tax on it.

WTF!?!?!?!

Even Amazon doesn't charge me sales tax and they have at least 2-3 fulfillment warehouse in the state(PA).

This is bullshit.

They've always taxed items in the store in tax states.
I live in NJ and I get taxed on ps store and amazon

Thing is, my last purchase(November 16th, Planet Minigolf) was NOT taxed. I paid the $9.99 price and that was it.

So what the hell happened in roughly 14 days that caused them to charge me tax now?

They're not just doing this now :(
they are required by law to charge tax in tax states. They've done so since the service went live!

But I've never been charged sales tax up until tonight when I went to purchase a game on there. I'm in Pennsylvania here and up until tonight they have never charged me tax.

You don't get charged tax on Amazon... I don't so neither should you o_O.

I always get charged taxed. It's weird that you weren't taxed so recently. Maybe something changed in your state recently? It's never really an issue for me but I can see having 10 left from a PSN card and seeing a total of 10.28. That would suck.

I recently bought something and still not taxed. I lived in two states that never charged sales tax for online purchases, and I'm still not taxed on PSN. All I gotta say is that your state must have put a law where online purchases are taxed and didn't get the news.

I guess so, since I even bought something from Amazon within the last 2-3 weeks(Enslaved for PS3) and it was a flat $25 for that too.

EDIT: I just went up to the next to last step to place an Amazon order for :ps3:Splatterhouse and Amazon isn't charging me tax on the $34.99 Lightning Deal price. So it must just be Sony's decision. Either that or Amazon is still in the process of fighting charging sales tax, as I've read about them doing in several other states.
They're so evil. It's only a matter of time before they start charging for PS3/PSP system updates.
you make me want to punch babies.

Yeah, I can't figure it out. I live in PA also and had not been charged tax up until a few days ago when I went to buy Joe Danger. I've been looking all over the net for news about PA changing the tax laws but can't find anything. It seems to just be a Sony thing.

You get charged tax on Amazon if you live in one of the states that house one of their distribution centers.

Or if you're unlucky enough to live in the tax sucking hole known as NYS like me.

But New Jersey does not have a distribution center. Pixi was saying s/he gets charged tax on Amazon purchases even though s/he lives in NJ. NJ doesn't get charged tax.

But that's the funny thing, in that I put Splatterhouse for PS3 in my cart on Amazon this morning to test out whether or not Amazon is charging me sales tax now as well and they STILL are NOT charging me sales tax. As far as I know there's about 4-5 distribution centers in and around PA for Amazon too, so they must still be fighting having to collect sales tax while Sony just rolled over and took it up the pooper like a good corporate entity.

So thus far it only seems to be PSN/Sony tacking on the tax(and of course Gamestop when I use STORE CREDIT, which fuckin' sucks:bomb:).

Yeah, I was trying to get Dead Nation just now and noticed the tax add on. I've never once been charged taxes before from any purchases I've made from PSN. Ugh...now I don't want to buy anything from PSN.

I know what you mean. I'm freakin seriously thinking of moving out of NY. The taxes on EVERYTHING and general high cost of everything is wearing me down. I may be heading south in a few years....

When I first started buying stuff from PSN, I assumed the tax was because of where I lived and that they recognized the state from my IP address. Turns out they tax you based on the physical address you entered, so now I'm using my brother's address who lives in a non-tax state. :)

I know some gamers who just made up addresses to avoid paying taxes.

;) Apparently I'm not alone in wondering wtf happened, since others are being taxed now as well. I guess Sony gives up the fight quickly, as compared to Amazon, who still doesn't charge tax in quite a few places.:D:applause:

I also got charged tax as well on PSN when I didn't in the past. But the topic, post, and the fact that you posted it makes me laugh.

Nothing has changed; the confusion is caused because Sony charges tax when they are the publisher. If they don't publish the game then they consider that the actual publisher is the seller and just paying a fee to Sony, so Sony is not required to collect the tax. This is actually a good move on their part to help you.

(You as the buyer are of course legally required to pay the tax directly to your state in this situation, but no-one ever does.)
