Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.  This requires being a paid subscriber or within a console-activated "1 month complimentary Gold trial" account.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.
  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

What I don't understand is the phenomenon of people like Pewdiepie becoming these huge celebrities with a following of millions of people. Every time I've tried to watch one of the big-name Let's Play guys to see what the fuss is about, I can stand it for about five minutes. Kinda makes me feel old. :p
I was thinking similarly. It just seems weird to be famous for doing things almost everyone else can do. I still cannot understand how a hobby can explode into something like that. Athleticism I can understand, as people train their bodies to do things mine cannot, but some guy using his thumbs and fingers on a controller while remaining sedentary doesn't seem impressive.

It's probably more the combination of boredom mixed with access and the mentality to accomplish nothing, so people will search the internet for distractions, and find someone else doing something else more appealing than themselves doing anything else.

I know there's been a lot of talk in the past of the "super-fun awesome-time" CAGs have had with PvZ, but can anyone speak from a non-hardcore FPS point of view...? I haven't really enjoyed FPS (especially not multiplayer) since the PS2 era, is there any hope I would enjoy Garden Warfare, or nah?

EDIT: I'm looking to grab the X1 sale this week, not the 360, if that matters.

Is the learning curve just a vertical wall and you sink or swim? (Ooh, mixed metaphors, that's how you know I'm desperate for answers.)

I'm really hating the X1's utter lack of demos, I mean, who are we these days, Sony?
It's a third person shooter - it's well-balanced (imo) - there are four characters per team (plants, zombies) with different specializations per character (flame, toxic, etc). Each character has three abilities that you can swap out for a different ability. So...by the time each character levels to - I think - 5, you have all the main three abilities. You then earn coins/points by completing matches to purchase sticker packs - which are the other abilities and other specializations. So the longer you play, the more you know the maps & the more specializations you have. However, just the starting characters/abilities/specializations put you on even ground (imo) with more experienced players (I'm level 98 and mostly stick with the starting characters/abilities). The key is really playing with others who have an idea of what they're doing and/or using mics.

I, personally, think Titanfall and PvZ are great. I stay away from CoD and Battlefield, as I think those games overly favor players who devote an inordinate amount of time playing and/or camp (i.e. not as balanced). That's my opinion, people can disagree.

I would only do it if I'm stuck at a certain part and need to find a way through. I wouldn't watch an entire game unless it's a really old game on a NES, SNES, etc. which I have done a couple of times with the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN).

But with a new release title from the very beginning?! Hell no.
I'm like last weeks south park ep, I just don't understand or see the appeal of watching other people play games.
I didn't see the appeal of Twitch either, until I started watching Tylerh1701 and MrNinjaSquirrel stream. There are some obvious benefits and some less obvious ones that you pretty much have to experience for yourself and/or be social to see:

You can see an extended portion of a game that shows what the game is really like, as opposed to an edited trailer that will show much less gameplay, how menus work, etc. This can help with buying decisions, etc.

With my show in particular, we have 1-2 streams a week, and we stream 1-2 different games per stream. So regular viewers get to be exposed to a lot of different games. They'll see games they might have otherwise overlooked or turned away from, and perhaps find out that they would actually like those games.

We give away prizes, and on average the viewer has a 1/5 chance of winning or better (last night was 1/8), which is better than most contests you'll find.

Watching a Twitch stream with commentary is very similar to listening to a podcast - the host talks about the game and other subjects. Depending on the host, it can make for informative and entertaining listening. And unlike non-live podcasts, the host can actually respond to the viewers, so there's an interactive element to the commentary.

That brings us to my favorite benefit of Twitch, which is viewers being able to chat with each other. Tuning in to a stream is like joining a chat room where everybody's talking about games. They'll obviously talk about the game being streamed, but also other stuff too. If you have a cool audience, the chat can be super fun. There just happens to be someone playing and talking about a game while you chat. Last night we chatted for an hour and a half after the stream ended (longer than usual), 'cause that was a fun chat.

If it was just watching an hour long "Let's Play," possibly involving someone acting like a jackass (PewDiePie, etc.), sure, that's a long time to sit there and watch somebody do something. But interacting with the host and your fellow viewers makes Twitch a much more entertaining experience.

Is puyo puyo tetris coming to the states? I really enjoyed the puyo puyo games and they added tetris style as well to the new one.

Entertainment will always be highly subjective.  I've hit a point in my life where I watch people play games more than I play them myself.  I started looking for gameplay videos so that I could get a better idea of whether or not I would enjoy something before I bought it.  I already watched content from Rooster Teeth, so watching their Achievement Hunter videos came naturally.  From there I found other people who made content that I really like.  In the end, it's no different than television - some shows you like, some shows you don't.  It's all about taste.

That's sadly not up to the console-company. If game publishers don't want to make demos, there won't be demos.
Nintendo rarely has demos as well. Sucks as that has led me to not buy more games. My money is more precious nowadays what with other responsibilities so being able to try it out beforehand, is instrumental in my decision. Oh well. Guess I get to save more money in the end to buy older games

I'm pretty sure that MS, at least with the 360, required trials for every single Arcade game, no?
This was true for last gen, the 360. Not for the Xbone though. It is not a requirement for devs or publishers to have a demo for every game on the marketplace

I'm like last weeks south park ep, I just don't understand or see the appeal of watching other people play games.
(formatting could be better, but I'm on mobile so meh)

Same reason why people watch sports, YouTube, movies, tv shows, etc. It is entertaining.

Some people argue "Isn't it more fun to play the games yourself?" That assumes that A. Everybody has enough money to buy every game played by the people they watch B. Everybody has access to those games C. The games being played are fun.

Very rarely A B C are true. A. They play a lot of game. Pewdiepie alone uploads 2-3 videos daily of different games. If you watch several different people that upload at the same rate, that is a lot of games to buy. A lot of them are around the games launch too, so that is over $60 a day on games. B. The well known YouTubers get games early. It is a great way to advertise a game. Their videos get well over one million reviews and all they have to do is offer a game to them for free. Win win for games and YouTubers. C. YouTubers don't always play fun games. A lot of the games they play look fun because they make them fun. Especially when they play free games, you'll watch the video, want to play the game yourself, play the game yourself for 5 minutes, print out a picture of the game, and throw it in the trash.

You can't jump into a YouTubers recent video and expect to enjoy their work right away. That would be like starting Arrested Development halfway through the third season. All the inside jokes would go over your head and you'd be left thinking about how terrible it was (which is part of the reason AD failed on a normal weekly schedule and is thriving on Netflix). I hated watching Pewdiepie videos when Amnesia was on sale and I was looking up gameplay videos, but he was the only person that had videos longer than 2 minutes at the time of that particular sale. I kept with it and learned many of his inside jokes that only people that watch a lot of his content would catch. Now I really enjoy his videos. At this point I can tell which of his reactions are bullshit and which ones are genuine. A lot of it is acting, but I'm okay with that. I watch movies and tv shows that only have acting.

I love watching the telltale games more than playing them because I'm interested in the story but get tired of dying and restarting things.

So is PVZ exclusively online multiplayer on 360?  There's no bot mode or anything?  If so, are plenty of people still playing it or is it kind of fading?

Yess PvZ is exclusively multiplayer,if you dont have gold you cant even check the option menu lolx

Might be different for the xbox one version since i think that one has split screen and the 360 version doesnt.

I still find games rather quick and pretty much full or close to it so i would say its really active on 360 still.

Nope.

There's a like co-op mode but it requires internet connectivity at all times and Gold still.

Onigiri is the first MMORPG for Xbox One, and it's free. The catch is it's only available in Japanese. I've written a detailed guide that explains how to download the game and play it on any console. The guide also includes menu translations and gameplay tips that will make it easier to play for English speakers. Please check it out!

I, personally, think Titanfall and PvZ are great. I stay away from CoD and Battlefield, as I think those games overly favor players who devote an inordinate amount of time playing and/or camp (i.e. not as balanced). That's my opinion, people can disagree.
I see what you mean. I've been on a first person fix lately and finished playing the Battlefield games for the first time(The only one I liked was Bad Company 2).

Right now I'm playing Call of Duty in order. I didn't like the first game, but I did like Call of Duty 2 (more for the graphics than story; gameplay could have been better at times). Right now I am playing Big Red One and I'm disappointed. I guess I am more into games where you're not part a group like Timesplitters, Doom, and Medal of Honor.

Here's my question: Is Treyarch or Infinity Ward considered the best? And which one did the first Black Ops? That game made me try these COD games in the first place.

If it was just watching an hour long "Let's Play," possibly involving someone acting like a jackass (PewDiePie, etc.), sure, that's a long time to sit there and watch somebody do something. But interacting with the host and your fellow viewers makes Twitch a much more entertaining experience.
For the record, I don't hate Twitch. If a friend got a game and wants to show it off, I have no problem watching. In fact, I did this with some people who bought WWE 2K15. If it's a game that doesn't have an ongoing storyline, I would be more likely to watch.

That being said, has anyone had the guts to stream The Raven? I'd probably be more entertained watching someone play that than trying to figure it out myself.

I'm going to download it sometime during the weekend. The game looked really interesting during the stream.

Awesome, thanks! Just finished downloading. I'll give it a go tomorrow. Very helpful link.

Few of my pinned games have blank tiles. Could be the start of transparent tiles being added. Crimson Dragon, Warframe, and KI 2 Classic are all clear. I've been looking forward to transparent tiles so the background wouldn't be blocked.

I Just got my own XBox One and I was wondering how do I stop getting stuff to download on my friend's XBox One? I Deleted my profile off of his One, but my download's still keep popping up there everytime I put stuff on my own XBox One's console queue.

Try going to Settings -> My Xbox -> My Home Xbox. Set as your home console and see if it fixes the problem.

If you mention #IDARB on Twitter, it looks like they are giving out codes. I got one. The game is expected to have a release date announced tomorrow, but you can play now if you got a code. I think that the game will either be free or very low priced by how much is being given away.

I'll be streaming it for the next hour or so depending on how much fun it is. Looks like it will be a blast. Link is in signature if you want to check it out.

EDIT: Stream is now over. Lasted about 2 hours. The game is a lot of fun, but not many people playing now. They will be giving out more codes on Twitter tomorrow.

is it online only?

Nope. You can turn off all the twitch features and even have random "hashbombs" pop up every 5-30 seconds. There is also a short single player campaign. Or if you don't feel like playing at all, you can bet fake money (like Saltybet) on bot matches.
I hope he gives out more codes today I want to try it out. Sounds like a lot of people are enjoying the game.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm definitely interested in trying that game. Anyone in specific we have to Tweet at or just have the #IDARB in our message?

I just mentioned #IDARB in a tweet. Didn't expect to get a response because I've only used Twitter 2 or 3 times. @MikeJMika sent me a PM after I mentioned it. Another dev was in my Twitch chat to answer questions for about an hour as well.

Cool, thanks for the heads up then :)

That's also pretty cool that a dev stopped by.

I think it is I drew a red box

I'll be streaming it again around 12:30  1:30 pm cst for at least an hour.

They just put out a trailer for #IDARB and it said February 2015 Games With Gold, so looks like it'll be the free game for February

Off topic: I finally finished KoA: Reckoning yesterday. 101 quests completed (main, side quest, faction and task) with 41 hours. It's an enjoyable game although I do have to say the difficulty curve for the last couple mission is insane. I headed into the last two as a level 30 and got wrecked, whereas before I'd just blast through every enemy. Regardless fun game that will now be deleted to make room.

I'm on my phone so I'll try to sum it up as best as I can.

Call of Duty 1, 2, 4 Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3 and Ghosts were done by Infinity Ward.

Big Red One, COD 3, World at War, Black Ops and Black Ops 2 were done by Treyarch.

Infinity Ward was formed within Activision after creating the original Medal of Honor and leaving EA because of studio/publisher issues. Infinity Ward also lost the majority of its studio after the release of Modern Warfare 2. Sledgehammer Games and Raven Studios helped develop different portions of Modern Warfare 3. The people who left Infinity Ward formed Respawn studios and partnered with MS and EA to publish and release Titanfall.

The general majority of the COD community enjoyed the original Infinity Ward games and disliked the Treyarch ones until the shake up at IW. Treyarch is now viewed as the favored studio since the well received Black Ops and Black Ops 2.

The COD games have just now rotated from a 2 year development cycle of 2 studios to a 3 year development cycle for each studio and added Sledgehammer Games as a full release studio with their release of the newest COD - Advanced Warfare.

(I'll probably edit this a bit when I get home from work to possibly include more detail)

Honestly I'm a bit frustrated right now. I bought the game in the Black Friday Sale. What a waste of $13.20.

Lesson learned, EA. Don't buy any of your games when they go on sale with XBL; got it. :headache:
that sucks that you bought it on BF. I almost bought it too, but figured that they'd be adding to the Vault real soon, so I held off. I'm glad I did.

This is the inherent problem with GWG, EA Access, and PS Plus or any other free game service. For many people, it will simply discourage people from buying since they might feel like they can wait to see if it becomes free. I won't deny myself of buying something I really want, but I will almost certainly not buy anything digitally until it's under $5. This is a significant reason i'm still sticking with physical discs for everything since I can at least trade, sell, or give it away once I get the game free from one of these freebie services.
