Is this the only way to own them digitally? The Xbox store currently lists ME2 and ME3 as "unavailable" for digital purchase. Is that EA with a stick up their butts, or will Microsoft eventually unlock them? I could just use the discs, but I'd rather trade them in if I could have the trilogy on my console to play whenever.

There has to be a issue with the store itself and purchasing. Since multi disc doesn't work for the majority of 360 Games on Demand, maybe they can't get it to show on xbox one store? Or it requires some sort of work around.

You know how we can't buy 360 games on the X1 using store credit? Probably something wonky they are working on.

Far fetched theory: They got it to work on the XBox One, but if your buying it on X1 it won't work on the 360 because It's multi disc. They would have to somehow show the title on the 360 Games on Demand list but it wouldn't work there. Therefore people would buy then bitch isn't doesn't work on the 360, despite in big letters THIS DOES NOT WORK on THE 360. FOR BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY PURPOSES ON THE XBOX ONE ONLY.

Hope I'm wrong later today and they are available for purchase digitally.

Presently there are no multi-disc 360 games available for digital purchase on XBL (Lost Odyssey, FF13, ME2-3, Dead Space 2-3, Rage, etc). Games like GTAV which came with a data install disc were retooled for digital distribution. The 360 OS isn't currently capable of disc-swapping on digital titles, and my guess is that they don't put games like ME2 on XBL for sale for the X1 because it would just confuse people more. I really wish they'd update the 360 to work w/ multi-disc digital games but they probably won't invest the time/money into the console at this point.

It's disappointing, but maybe Microsoft will figure something out; it'd be nice if they could make a category or special addendum in the store for backward compatible digital titles that only function on the Xbox One. Big, bold letters of THIS WON'T WORK ON THE 360 should be enough, right? In the meantime, it looks like I'm gonna ignore my groaning bank account and renew my EA Access subscription.

 
There are plenty of multi-disc games available digitally, though. Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noir to name two.

That may be it, now that I think about it.

Mass Effect is awesome but I am just not sure when I will ever have the time to go back to play these games after sinking so much time already into them.  These announcements are always fun but in the end I barely use BC to be honest.

There are a few but I wouldn't say "plenty." As I stated, the few that are on there have been retooled by publishers for digital distribution. Notably, all the ones that have been named (GTAV, MP3, LA Noir) are all from Rockstar. Seems they're willing to invest the extra energy for it and most other publishers aren't.

No. The ones mentioned were created with the SDK that was designed to create a GoD image for multi disc games.

Games that weren't created with that SDK would have to be redone.

Is there a reason why just ME2 and ME3 are backwards compatible, but not the first one ? Or am I so out of the loop that I'm missing something ? Never played any of them, but I have both 2 and 3 with most of the DLC's in the 360 backlog, waiting for me to play ME1 first.

The original ME was part of the launch for the BC program, they demoed it at E3 for the reveal.

 
Yeah, first ME was one of the first BC games.  In fact that was one of the games that only preview members could initially get because it was in beta.

Regardless, the reason they aren't available for digital distribution is because they are multi-disc. Since 2011, other multi-disc games haven't used that SDK, so it's not one or the other, it's both.

Calm down folks. We got Mass Effect 1-3 digitally free* and you can always still buy the discs cheap and put them in your X1.

* WIth EA Access.

Just trying to make it clear that not all of the games that aren't digital are not the fault of the devs.

 
EA should just attach the Mass_Effect_2_Digital.360 file to an email and send it to Larry. Then he could upload it to the marketplace.

Main reason I ask is this -- backlog. I have so many new games on my plate in addition to the huge backlog so figured if I could start with the better of the first and second games I would go that route.

I don't think there is a consensus on ME2 being better. In fact, I once did an ME1 vs ME2 poll on another forum and the result was literally split 50/50. Personally I'm in the ME1 is better camp. I think that skipping ME1 is a mistake and that you miss out on the entire foundation of the storyline, but the ME trilogy might be my favorite game series of all time, so I'm kind of biased here. :)

 
Mass Effect 1 was made by the original Bioware team, before EA bought them out. That's why it feels like an extension of their earlier works like KOTOR and Jade Empire. When EA took over, it became much more of a shooty pew pew Mcshooter with less emphasis on exploration and RPG elements. I love all three but I can see how it'd be hard for someone to go back to the original game after the blistering action of the sequels.

Another vote here for ME1 over the sequel. I prefer the RPG elements of the 1st vs the streamlined approach of the 2nd. Like Groo said, it's "classic Bioware" but when EA inserted their opinions, became more a shooter in the sequel w/barely any RPG goodness.

awp - play the first Mass Effect. The ME series has a great storyline with wonderful characters full of life. Almost as engrossing as books imo. Skipping the 1st game is like reading cliff notes to the first Lord of the Rings book or even the 1st in the Hunger games trilogy. It lessens the emotional effect when you get to the latter parts and cheapens alot of things.

I have a backlog a mile long like all the rest here, but I found the time to play through ME1 a few months ago. Just as great now as it was 9 years ago.....eff me, has it been that long???

I originally played them on PS3, so I started w/ ME2 and went back to the original after beating ME3. It was kind of fun that way to experience it as a prequel, since ME2 stands pretty well on its own and the events of the first game are explained and referenced enough that I had no problem following the plot (the same couldn't be said about playing ME3 without having played ME2). The game mechanics in ME1 show their age now, especially the lack of auto-save which cost me 20-30 min of progress once in awhile when I got ambushed by enemies. Gripes aside, all 3 are fantastic. I like the more RPG-oriented gameplay of ME1 but personally found everything else in ME2 (story especially) to be superior.

Cannot recommend skipping ME1, though, if you have access to all 3 games. Play them in order!

IMHO, ME1 has story and a sense of mystery over the sequels. Gameplay wise however, ME3 beats them all. ME2 improved over the original in may technical aspects and the story itself is pretty good even if it feels a tad disconnected to the one introduced in ME1. That's why I've always considered ME3 to be more of a sequel to ME1 than ME2 was. I'm sure many people will disagree and that's fine.

The one thing that really irked about ME3 was how much they toned down Renegade Shepard. Yes yes I know it was done due to the "sense of urgency" the game's story had but still. In ME2 you had the liberty of being an absolute sociopathic douche and get away with it. Kellam's interrogation during Thane's loyalty mission would be a good example. During ME3 however, I only felt like a true renegade when dealing with Samara's daughter in the ardat yakshi temple, when stopping Mordin from curing the genophage and when you'd tell the Quarians to fuck themselves on Rannoch if they didn't stand down while you were trying to broker peace with the Geth.

Aaaahhhh, memories. I'm SO installing the games once I get home from work.

Yeah, I DEFINITELY preferred ME1 to 2 (and three for that matter).  ME1 was more of an actual RPG.  ME2 was basically an action game with an RPG narrative with upgrades.  It was good, don't get me wrong, but a pretty big deviation from 1.  You can definitely tell that 2 was made after they were bought out, because they were "persuaded" to make the game appeal to more people.

Exactly the same thing with DA:O and DA2 as well...

 
Goddamn, the driving in Mass Effect 1. I'm always reminded how pointless existence is when I'm forcing the damn MAKO or whatever up a goddamn a steep hill.
