Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
[*]ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...

Jesus what are these books printed on gold? I know when I was in collage most exp book I got was $90. Some of the professors would buy the book, make photo copies, and charge the total cost of making a copy of said book. Which turned out to be $15 or so.

so has anybody gotten the gamescom mixpot yet?
I did. The "Thanks for watching" messages popped up while I was playing...a couple of days ago? I already had the HW2 skin, but the others popped up and downloaded. As was mentioned, you should be able to see them in your history. They didn't come through as an inbox message this time (though I can't remember if they did last time either).

I'm dropping 500 on access codes this semester, hopefully GwG is gold because I can't afford anything else
I had to buy a textbook last semester which only came in unbound loose-leaf wrapped in plastic. No cover, no binding, only available through the publisher due to online access codes, for $200. Professor said the online stuff was essential to the course, and I literally never went to the website. She also said the textbook is one we'd want to reference for years due to its relevance to clinical practice. Good thing it's loose paper which is going to rip and age horribly.

Who are you?
There's always ~40 people reading the thread if you look at the bottom of the page, with hundreds on Monday nights. Lurkers don't discuss the games but then chime in with really valuable contributions like this one.

As Bob said above, a lot of textbooks (like my example) have online codes that include access to extra materials that basically require you buy the book new.

In college, I learned that most professors teach what they know, rarely referencing the book, and test on the material taught in class. So I made sure to always be in class and took profuse notes, because I had nowhere near the amount of $$ for books.  Would hang out in the college library if I needed to look up material.  Worked out for everything but math/accounting classes (Marketing major here).  I can't imagine paying the arm and leg that text books have become (graduated 2010).

Currently doing my daily two hour commute to the office, so reading this thread keeps me up to date on everything.

I'm in a writing intensive clinical program, which requires a lot of reference to the course material and texts to demonstrate understanding and application of various theories. My professors who are really good at their jobs definitely teach what they know from experience, but the textbooks are unfortunately not optional since we aren't taking standardized tests.

Same. Luckily, I had a lot of professors that would tell you up front whether or not they planned to use the textbook. I specifically remember a couple of professors that handed out full chapter scans. Not sure that's legal, but it saved me a lot of money.

Now grad school - that's where books get crazy. I only had to buy 2-4 throughout, but those were some expensive books. It's always finance, accounting, and stats.

This way off xbox topics but ...

That's how they void the used/rental market.

One argument as to the rising cost of post secondary education in the US (and it's associated costs such as text books) is the availability of government backed loans. While these do provide accessibility to education, they are comparatively easy to obtain compared to loans for other large purchases such as cars and homes. When the market is flooded with funds to pay for an item suppliers will raise prices to obtain as much of those funds as possible, and in so doing may neglect to raise the quality of a good/setvice proportionate to the increase in price.

I'm in a writing intensive clinical program, which requires a lot of reference to the course material and texts to demonstrate understanding and application of various theories. My professors who are really good at their jobs definitely teach what they know from experience, but the textbooks are unfortunately not optional since we aren't taking standardized tests.
I believe you mentioned you are/were in clinical psych, correct? My wife did the same thing, and the textbook situation is way different over there. I feel like that program had a larger number of more expensive (and required) textbooks. She still has many of them, alongside some of the largest binders you can imagine. I know - i've had to lug them around through two moves now. I think she had 6-7 of them just for her thesis material.

I was about to post this exact thing. Thank you.

Instead of online codes, maybe publishers could fight the used market the way games do with micro-transactions. Full used text is readable, but if you want the answers to the study questions at the end of each chapter, it'll cost you $1.99.

It's definitely not legal, but it should also be illegal to charge so much for education and textbooks, so in my mind it evens out :whistle2:

Um this week's 360 sales are actually pretty good, tempted to move to digital on some Fallout 3/NV
Rage for $3.75 or so is also pretty tempting, especially if you're playing on a 360 and don't want to mess with 3 separate discs.

Yeah, that's basically it. My program doesn't require a thesis but by the time I'm done I'll have practically written one anyway.

Oh hell yes. I asked my wife to run to gamestop for me real quick to pick something up while I'm at work. While she was there, I had her ask about the X1X preorders and they had one left. She did the unthinkable and actually put money down on that shit. She was texting me asking if she should but I was busy. God bless her she did it anyways.

So I'm getting a new Xbox and I owe my wife a kick ass anniversary present.

It sounds like she'll get one on 11/7!

My wife saw me and my kid getting excited about the new xbox promo and gave me a stare before finishing off with, "I hope you didnt pre-order one of those...". Guess what my wife's going to get for our (marriage) anniversary...

Oh, snap. Thanks for the heads up! Last time, I went in and got Ryu as the GS I went to was pretty low on stock. Of course, you can't get Ryu without Ken, so I bought Ken out of pocket and fell right for their trap.

Oh, no wonder I didn't notice it, it's all useless crap. I was hoping for a Forza car or something.
A Forza car would have been nice. I'm kinda surprised it didn't happen since it's MS and all. Even without a new car, how about a few wheelspins for watching? Something?!?

And now I'll be getting a Ryu...

Here's hoping for a GWG/BC announcement tomorrow!
All the ME 2 and ME 3 talk about it not being able to be digitally bought from the Xbox 360 store got me looking at what is actually in there. looked at the 360 store of full digital games, not arcade. I took out all the Kinect stuff since there is zero chance of that and came up with 383 full games left. A lot of it is stuff that has about zero chance to make BC, Sports games, Movie games, games where the developers are long gone. Another huge portion is stuff that has 360 and Xbox One editions, granted those have come BC in the past so included them. Yeah I was bored.

All this college talk... I just registered for my first classes to start the process of getting a CPA license. First time back in school in 7 years, I shudder to think what text books are going for these days.

I paid for my books out of pocket last year because I'd been working full time for what feels like forever and could afford it. Now I'm living on loans and it's simultaneously nice to not have to worry about cost and stressful to think about paying it all back.

After the Ghostbusters game came out on BC, I'm more optimistic about old licensing issues. Granted, that game is still available digitally, so they still have distribution rights, but GB isn't the cash-cow that a Marvel license can be so it probably wasn't held back by the same business fights. At least GWG will ensure there are guaranteed additions twice a month, assuming those games aren't already BC.

When my wife went back to school for her BCBA a few years ago, she had to buy and train a Madagascar hissing cockroach for one of her behavior classes. It was (by far) the least expensive and most amusing thing either of us ever had to buy for school. I distinctly remember one person in that class had one escape and still hadn't found it by the end of the semester. I named the cockroach Cornelius Shaw.

My wife hated that project.

I need Mortal Kombat (the reboot), Remember Me, Ghost Recon Future Soldier and......maybe Fuse (the game robbed me of a lot campaign achievements) to go BC.

I'm not even going to get my hopes up for the Crackdowns since those might not hit until next year. The same with Fable Anniversary. Hell, we're even getting Halo Anniversary that has no digital version before CD1, CD2 and FA.

Max Payne 3 and LA Noire top my BC wishlist.

Completed Watch_Dogs last weekend and jumped into Metal Gear Solid V last night.  Looking forward to the ridiculousness that is Snake.

Might bite on Fallout: New Vegas and TES: Oblivion just for the connivence of having it digital.  I believe I started New Vegas and then immediately went to do the 'Old World Blues' DLC, because of the magic space gun and house for storage.  Don't really remember what happened last in my save file.  Oblivion I've never played but have heard rave reviews.

Ha oddly enough, there is a little window with the crackdown games on demand page that says something like "Get Ready! - Crackdown on Sale" guess that will be sitting there awhile.

Oh in regards to the Fallout New Vegas DLC, if I own the digital version, will I be able to access the DLC that came with the Ultimate Edition second disc? I've read conflicting answers and I remember that for Borderlands 1, the digital version wouldn't work with the on-disc DLC included in the GOTY edition.

I've read that Oblivion's GOTY requires disc 2 to be in the drive to load up any of the DLC content - the second disc will initiate a download of everything but if you have the first disc in, only the base game will be available. This may be a problem unique to Oblivion, though, and it's super obnoxious if you have a digital copy for convenience.

Not the first place I've read it, but one source.

Oddly enough Project Cars and Evolve just popped up in my Ready to Install. I believe I hid them a while ago but after I had to reset my Xbox everything I hid came back up. I went through and hid everything so it's odd these two just showed up again or maybe for the first time I don't remember. I decided to start the download for Project Cars and give it a shot today.

I'm gonna say I feel that the bonuses with the Mixpot for Gamescom this time around, opposed to E3, are in relation to their Europe demographic/market. Eh free Warpaint for Halo War 2 is appreciated though.

LOL, also thanks for the laughs about textbook purchases. I used to sell the books back to the college campus bookstore but then they started doing the crap of oh there's a new version out so we're only going to give you a fraction of what we'd normally give you. Luckily I was able to go to an independent bookstore near campus and got "discounted" books that way. Also had friends and classmates that went to the copy place to save on books that way. There was a big network at UB and sometimes you would be lucky someone scanned in the entire book and put it up on the local network lol. My most expensive books were Science & Math related.

^ Both Project Cars and EVOLVE were GWG a little while back.

On a side note, I picked up my Corsair headset and am waiting for it to charge at the moment. But I noticed that the money originally set aside for the purchase returned to my bank account..... so i got it for free?

Haha, thanks for doing that legwork. Now if I can have a final report of the games that aren't a stretch on my desk by the end of the day that would be great. ;)

Unfortunately I am holding out for a few of those long shots, namely DMC 4, Arkham City and GTA V. I can keep hoping, right?

These were GWG, but they had some "glitch" where they would not show in the Ready to Install list and you had to actually go to the store to download them. I think you could "spoof" the list by downloading some of the files and then deleting them. Perhaps Microsoft fixed that glitch now.
