Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

12/14/2017 the day net neutrality died

Can't wait to pay my ISP $20 a year more to use XBox Live
It was a forgone conclusion with that ass clown and his cronies having a majority vote. Only thing to do now is to call and bitch at senators to do something since it feels better than just doing nothing and hoping someone breaks his shins (which I'll still do regardless).

Hopefully the blue wave continues in 2018 and 2020, so the balance of power shifts and a new FCC reapplies the rules, with some Congressional backing. Then companies that spent money rolling out changes to line screw with the Internet will have to spend more to roll them back (with laws passed to curtail passing the rollback costs on to the customers). Unless companies are currently skittish about changing things for now in anticipation of a rollback with a change in power.

There are few things that might rally a unilateral response from the general public than trying to repeal net neutrality. I know Congress can intervene, but I expect them to use the same talking points and pretend like it's a good thing in favor of being able to charge people more money.

As someone who does a lot of research online for clinical work and social issues, I can't imagine how badly this will stifle access to information. A year from now, you might see a link shared on social media, follow it, and get error messages that your internet provider doesn't allow access to that particular website unless you want to pay more. Private companies like Comcast and Verizon will be able to force you to use the search engines they own vs going to whichever one you prefer, which could extend to email services too.

This will be a nightmare for small businesses and higher education.

This is what I’m hoping. And, of course, it’ll keep flipping back and forth depending on who’s in charge.

I just don’t get the arguments for repealing it other than greed.

Looooool @ this being Trump's fault. It was your retarded boy Obama who sold off the internet before left office as one final Fu to America.

What did Obama sell off? If you’re talking about making the Internet on the same page for everyone, that is the opposite of selling it off. Today’s action is what has sold out everyone using the Internet who can be charged more depending on what they want to access. If an ISP wants to change more or shut off access to a competitor’s service, they can do so now.

Again, other than greed, I see no value on overturning net neutrality.

This is a boon to providers and a huge FU to consumers.

You said ass clown - unless there is another one that we dont know about it has to be Trump, no?
He referred to FCC head. Funny you automatically assume it’s Trump because he is one of many hats that are ass.
Pretty sure he was referring to Ajit Pai.
Yeah, the cronies and the mention of the vote should've been kinda obvious since he was the one also trying to make this happen last time as well.

It just proves that Obama was the greatest mastermind in history. With a Republican President, a Republican Congress and a Trump appointee at the head of the FCC, he still got net neutrality repealed. He’s a real life Dr. Evil.

I'm just over here playing Overwatch and eating my popcorn while I watch people lose there minds on social media.

I was wondering though, now that Net Neutrality is done, do I send a check to Blizzard or my ISP to slow down my enemies internet so I can get more kills?

From a C-Net article (no idea if they are neutral on this or not) that seems to sum up the hub-bub:

The repeal of the rules was spearheaded by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who was named head of the agency earlier this year by President Donald Trump. He has called the rules "heavy-handed," and contends that they've deterred innovation and depressed investment in building and expanding broadband networks. He said ditching the rules and reinstating the previous broadband classification is a return to the FCC's "light touch" approach to regulation that started under President Bill Clinton.
What I gleam from this:

  • The vote fell along party lines because in general the Republican Party is for less government oversight. I don't think that the Republican Party is angling to cause anyone to lose access to any online media (or to cause one's opponents in Overwatch to time out and lose the match, sorry Donken) or other of life's little joys.
  • The repeal rolled back the clock on oversight of the internet to a set of rules that were put in place by ANOTHER DEMOCRAT.

What I assume will happen:

  • If ANY ISP tries to deny or stifle access to ANYTHING, there would be such an outcry that they would be forced to reverse said action almost immediately.
  • Nothing will happen.

I'm just over here playing Overwatch and eating my popcorn while I watch people lose there minds on social media.

I was wondering though, now that Net Neutrality is done, do I send a check to Blizzard or my ISP to slow down my enemies internet so I can get more kills?
How do you keep your controller from getting greasy? /s

The problem I have with the “nothing will happen” argument is why change it if nothing will happen? Sorry, but before net neutrality there absolutely was instances of throttling. I have little reason to believe some ISPs won’t do it again or charge more for certain things like Netflix streaming. There’s still plenty of markets that have little or no completion so that will leave consumers high and dry.

Only time will tell, but the Internet providers wouldn’t have lobbied so hard to change it if they had no intent to make money off being deregulated.

Also have to say it’s bullshit that the change also makes it so that no states can have their own regulations. So the same people that argued that states should have more control over how health care is handled are saying the states should have no say in this?

And trust me, having the ability to place restrictions on healthcare providers would make life much more complicated for insurance companies to do business so there is no argument that state regs on ISPs would be any different for said companies.

Caveat lector: tl;dr

I agree 99% with you, it's not even a disagreement, just a minor addition.

While I use sources like arxiv.org and other people use repositories such as jstor or the like, I tend to think people who do access these repositories make up a very small portion of residential Internet users. Based on that I see a greater likelihood that, as you mentioned, reaching these researched based repositories will be a greater issue for academic/research institutions than for residential consumers. So yes academic/research institutions may face isp's charging them extra to get to these academic repositories, or worse.

I used to work in HEP (high energy physics) at a university and we had to transmit Peta bytes of data daily. In and out. That part - the sharing of research data across institutions - might be hit even worse because of the much larger volume of data than compared to the data volume of the papers the research produces.

That being said I don't see isp's throttling academic data to the average residential consumer as there would be little profit. On the other hand, I do see isp's charging extra for social media access, gaming access, entertainment access, etc. becsuse there will be more consumers to charge and thus more profit.

I also see the possibility of this driving new technologies/methodologies that bypass the isp's ability to throttle traffic. Just as lack of convenient affordable access to entertainment media drove services like Napster and limewire. They shut those down, and torrents arose. Once services like Netflix, Spotify, etc. showed up making it more convenient and more cost efficient for consumers those nonsanctioned services died down. Who wants to run a seedbox when they can pay $9 per month for Netflix. But start charging people extra ... some people will just pay ... some will use the isp's preferred alernative to reduce their cost ... a few will just quit using the service. But some will find a way around.

More than throttling speeds, I’m worried that this is going to lead to more tiered data caps - especially considering the size of 4K games.

I think people argue that little to nothing will happen and it’s just a way for politicians to say they kept a promise and actually did something they intended to do. As mentioned, there’s way more competition on the internet marketplace than there was when rules were put in so paywalls should be met with exodus.

Was management consultant for several Fortune 500 companies. If a business can make an extra penny. They will. The sole purpose of a business is to increase shareholder wealth. If you think otherwise you need to grow up. If there is no regulation to stop a business from screwing you to make more money they will. I used to teach them how to get better at it.

My simple economic argument in favor of net neutrality: how many ISPs could engage in the anti competitive practice of throttling/charging usurious fees to a competitor of another of that company’s services?

Example: If Netflix counts against your Comcast internet data cap, but streaming apps that are tied to your Comcast cable to account do not count against that data cap, then you have anti competitive behavior that has been routinely punished in the past.

And don’t think the cable companies don’t view video games as a competitor. If my eyes are on Halo or Call of Duty, they aren’t on ESPN or cnn.

Not really. There’s still tons of places that have only one ISP. I live in a pretty booming area and my only two real choices are Charter and AT&T, that latter of which sucks with DSL speeds 1/10 of the speed as Charter. So that means Charter will rule the roost if you want to have decent Internet speeds.

Charter and Comcast in particular will have a huge advantage if they want to throttle or charge more for things like video streaming or gaming.

And those companies have been spending millions to lobby for this change. Doubt they would do it if it’s just for politicians to say they did something.

I Still imagine those companies would have you pay for either some kinda loot box or locked end game content that's already on disc.

It will be the return of the AOL, MSN and CompuServe era of Internet.

Verizon DSL is $30 for .5 to 1 mbps lol bundled with a home phone

BLAZING FAST for $40 with speeds up to 3mbps while Fios is not available because they won't upgrade.

The Town over has their own Cable/Internet and they start out at 5mbps for $25

Comcast has $50 for 10 mbps but once that AT&T deal goes through I'm sure Direct TV and Xfinity will go up.

Xfinity also added that cap so between Xbox and Playstation they need to put the full games on the disc and stop the huge patches.

That and pop ups when I stopped using their rental modem and bought my own.

They already caught these companies throttling Netflix and the use of Facetime to get people to pay more for faster speeds i can't wait to see what happens next. I really enjoyed the AT&T, Time Warner and Comcast press conference saying Trump and the DoJ won't stop them.

And the demand for SNES classic goes sky higher ... or whatever's past sky high.

I think the most likely effect is that Comcast/TW/etc. add a “streaming” and “gaming” tier to their internet service that gets magically erased when you go ahead and get the “ultra” bundle of TV/phone/Internet... We’ll pay it, too, because the vast majority of us live in a place where we only have one cable provider.

FYI if you turn off Game DVR it increases frame rate and helps texture loading. At least on the X, not sure about other systems.

Theres a large post about it on reddit.

So that’s only for PUBG? Never use Game DVR so might just turn it off all the time anyway.

I started up Okami today. You can now skip the dialog boxes by pressing the "start" button. I don't know if that's because of the update it pushed before I could start, but it's nice to have. Especially for me, as I've played the game on 3 different generations of console now. I could potentially fly though this game.

Not sure if it's rolling out to everyone but Stats for the Year rolled out for me.

#1 Rocket League

#2 Stranger of Sword City

#3 GTA IV

#4 Phantom Dust

#5 Shadows of the Damned

952 total hours. Put me in top 1%

Mine has almost no info. It only shows info from the 2ish hours I got to play an Xbox One prior to my purchase of the X on launch day. So zero stats from November or December. My 360 is offline, which is why I have no other activity.

The irony of the two choices you picked for TV.

They put up the patch notes in Gems of War. Apparently a new Kingdom is upcoming, to go along with two achievements added to the game (Reach Lvl 250, 500).

Ahh, here's mine:

1) Gems of War

2) Forza Horizon 3

3) Rocket League

4) Fortnite

5) Mass Effect: Andromeda

1% Gamerscore

Keep in mind that's up to 10/31/17 apparently.
