Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

Achievements are not the only reason I game, but my gaming habits are motivated by achievements, its the only reason I played half the garbage on Games with Gold and a major reason why I stuck with xbox despite playstation having so many more games.
So you prefer your gaming habits being driven by a meaningless number and not by playing games that aren't "garbage"?

Well, today was a shitty fucking day. Was in Charlottesville to volunteer with crisis work and it was fucking terrifying.

Tell me something funny or positive, or to keep on topic, your earliest gaming memory.

Wow, glad you made it out of there ok, what a disgusting scene that was.
Earliest gaming memory maybe playing Combat with my grandpa on the 2600.

Damn girl. Glad you are safe. Unbelievable bullshit there today.

Earliest gaming memory literally is Pong. Think I played it a restaurant or something. That was long before I got my first gaming system — a Colecovison.

I got pretty focused on achievements a few years back, but finally learned to stop caring about them that much as I branched back out more onto other platforms. It does give you the option of aiming for specific goals for fun, or potentially give you another goal in a game you really like.

They do tend to influence my multiplatform game purchases though. Multiplayer stuff is because my friends on XBL, but for single-player I'll usually grab it on Xbox for the gamerscore. Like with Sonic Mania this week I went with Xbox instead of Switch, though the portability may influence some purchases eventually, but I also think MS sounds like they plan to keep BC around for the foreseeable future and being able to keep my old stuff on Xbox Two is pretty appealing.

Why? Nothing bad possibly could've happen-...oh, oh damn. Uhhh...

Earliest gaming memory was not understanding the fucking point of Tetris because I thought you were supposed to build the highest most solid tower you can and not understanding why I kept sucking so bad. It wasn't until much, much later (like middle school) where I realized the whole point of the game and continued to suck and lose to my sister.

I Also remember like when I was 7 or 8 or whenever the hell Time Killers came out that, the noise of when one of the players died always scared the bejeezus out of me. Like I don't know why, I don't think I had a Rod and/or Todd Flanders upbringing since I enjoyed Mortal Kombat, but just seeing someone with no arms suddenly lose their head and the thing ended just freaked me out.

I did the same thing with Tetris! Same age.

My dad got it and I hadn't seen him play it. I had no idea wtf I was doing or why the level kept ending. He came home and thought me and my sister's complete lack of understanding of the game was hilarious, and finally showed us how to play.

My earliest gaming memory is super smash bros... Melee... On the GameCube. (Because I'm a damn millennial)

My earliest gaming memory is probably Super Mario World, but I've played it so much for so long that it blends together. The stuff that really sticks out came slightly later with either Yoshi's Island, Sonic 1 or 2 at a friend's, or my Gameboy Pocket days with Pokemon Blue, 6 Golden Coins, and Warioland.

Best gaming memory was the various LAN shenanigans I had with both roommates and long distances friends from my sort of clan, and the old Smash Bros gatherings we had like 10-15 years ago. If you ever want jolly, try to get something like that set up, though it's a bit harder with current Xbox/PS4 because of the low number of LAN capable games.

I get the games for "free", achievements motivate me to try them out, usually long enough to confirm that yes gianna twisted sisters is garbage and I move on. I get more value out of the console that I bought and games that I pay for. It's a good system.

I did the same thing with Tetris! Same age.

My dad got it and I hadn't seen him play it. I had no idea wtf I was doing or why the level kept ending. He came home and thought me and my sister's complete lack of understanding of the game was hilarious, and finally showed us how to play.
Mine took a damn epiphany of just staring at someone playing and slowly piecing it together. Like I said, it was years in the making and not understanding and looking back now I don't know how I couldn't piece it together. Then again I realize I suck at puzzle games and have never ever solved one of those 8 piece sliding puzzle things in real life or in games without a damn guide.

My earliest gaming memory is super smash bros... Melee... On the GameCube. (Because I'm a damn millennial)
*Angrily looks for a dislike button just out of older out of touch spite*

My earliest memory was sadly going to the Radio Shack in the local mall where I'm guessing it was Pitfall they had set up on a computer and I would just sit and play for however long my parents would let me. I didn't get my own system until the NES had been out for a while and so by default it was all Super Mario then.

My earliest gaming memory is playing on the Star Wars arcade console in the K-Mart arcade as a kid. K-Mart actually had a full fledged arcade, like a smaller version of Flynn's Arcade in Tron, in the back of the store. That is until a knock-off (can't remember the name of it) chuck e cheese clone opened in the same building. God I miss that welfare american cheese pizza.

Good investment, you won't regret it, likely to save you hundreds in battery costs as well.
True but that came from my Xbox One X pre-order funds lol. Ehh, it's time to build that up again.

The only way to improve it is to remove it. Ruining gaming since 2005.
You mean enhancing it since 2005. I believe a game's life can be extended with the use of good achievements. There's a ton you can do in a game these days and true some achievements and devs have gone overboard but overall I love setting a goal once the overall goal of beating a game is completed. Each game in the Mass Effect trilogy have given me hours of play and largely in part due to the achievements I strived to get in the end but yeah it doesn't hurt the games are excellent. Garbage games to play for achievements, not me though. I've hit 100,000 anyways, just cruising on through now. Meh, I'd play more of my Nintendo games more if they had achievements to be honest.

Achievements mainly have shown me most gamers have ADD and give up on games within a few hours of playing them.
Stands up from computer char, "Um hi, my name is Spybreaker and I have gaming ADD." In unison, Hi Spybreaker.

Well, today was a shitty fucking day. Was in Charlottesville to volunteer with crisis work and it was fucking terrifying.

Haven't paid attention to any news so I was like what the hell happened in Charlottesville today? Jesus, ignorance is bliss.

Wow, glad you made it out of there ok, what a disgusting scene that was.
Earliest gaming memory maybe playing Combat with my grandpa on the 2600.
Oh man me too! Combat was the shit, 15 games in 1 yo! Well I don't know how they tried to market it lol but yeah bunch of different game modes in that one. I also watched my Uncle play Dune II, oh them were the days.

Opens mouth and points finger in unison of all the other people in this thread.

Also as someone who was born in '84, down with millennials!

This...and some missle command and a very bad looking pacman game.

I still have my original Atari, joystick, and a load of the original games. My Mom passed away about eight years ago and while cleaning out her home I found the mother load. She was cool and loved watching me play. Even would tell people how she supported it because it built hand eye coordination lol.

My cousin had an Atari 2600 and got me playing it when my aunt would babysit. That might be where I got my first real love of games, shitty Pac-Man and all. Then my mom got an IBM PC-Junior at a yard sale, she used to work for a newspaper and wanted to have a computer to type on. It came with a ton of games, including the early King's Quest, and me and my sister played it for hours. The witch always got us, though.

Just got a call from my best friend's husband (the friends I play Borderlands with) that she was hit in the car attack that's all over the news. I was there 20 minutes later and had no idea she was being treated by EMS, and I've since made the drive home. I'm not the praying type, but if you are, all positive thoughts are welcome.

My earliest gaming memory was getting a NES for Christmas when I was 5 and me and my family taking turns playing tetris all night

Some interesting answers from Slime Rancher dev AMA

"How was your experience working with the Xbox team and how do you feel about the exposure Slime Rancher has enjoyed so far with Games with Gold?"

"Xbox is a great partner, we've been really happy working with them.

And the exposure has been something else. Millions of downloads in a matter of days. We're pretty blown away!"

In regards to if the game will ever be Play Anywhere

"It will be eventually but there's currently some technical blockers preventing us from moving forward with Play Anywhere."

In regards to Game Preview

"Yeah, definitely. It allowed us to develop the game over time and receive feedback live. It totally changed the way we would have otherwise structured development, but having a bunch of online/live game experience, it becalm a natural fit for us. I'd definitely consider doing it again."

I Can't promise much, but I promise I will post as many dumb, insignificant posts I can to help distract you in this shit hole time right now and hope for the best.

Because everyone was curious how I feel about achievements, I'll tell you.

I understand the appeal of them and don't fault anyone for trying to go for them most of the time, but the people who boggle me are the ones who make purchasing decisions based on achievements, either buying a game because they're easy or avoiding it because they're absurdly difficult or literally impossible, or force themselves to play horrendous garbage games to score fake points. At no point does either circumstance make sense to me.

You've also got PlayStation players who avoid games that don't have a platinum trophy. Could be a fun, inexpensive way to spend time and yet you'll pass it up because in the end you won't have a virtual trophy? Seriously?

I had a home console version of Pong which displayed on the TV screen in black and white. The console was just for one game. I thought the heavens had opened up when we got an Atari 2600 (still my favorite console of all time).

I get more out of my game by going for the achievements, sure the points are meaningless but its just fun to go for. I've enjoyed all the time i put into MCC hunting achievements, sure the end goal is pointless but the journey was great.

While technically not my earliest gaming memory, the earliest pivotal one was my parents finally tracking down a NES in 1988. My father hooked it up that night and together we stayed up to midnight taking turns on Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. The next morning, we woke up at 6AM and started again. We skipped breakfast. We briefly stopped for lunch and then went back to it. We stayed up close to midnight again.

At the time, my father usually worked 6 days a week, 12 hour days. Him taking that Saturday off to do that was amazing. I don't think my 5 year old self could have been happier. Even though he got out of gaming shortly thereafter (once he went through SMB without warps and without losing a life he felt like he was done), it just ignited my love for the artform.

Damn, GGP...hope your friend is OK! Sorry you were anywhere near that today.

I don't know if this is my earliest gaming memory, but it strikes a good balance between early and positive...

My Dad had an Atari and this Winter Games game that we'd play late into the night after my stepmom went to bed when I saw him on weekends. That was not long before he got an NES (I must have been 5 or 6- I'm 38 now) and we had tons of fun competing in that game. Years later him, my bro, stepbro and I would do the same thing with other games, with our EA NHL tourneys standing out most in my mind.

I haven't thought about that damned Atari game in forever, lol. My dad died earlier this year and overall it hasn't been as hard as I'd have expected (we weren't very close last few yrs, kinda complicated) but sometimes I remember stuff like that and I'm filled with this really weird blend of happiness/melancholy/thankfulness. So now I've turned this post into kind of a weird downer, but damn it I get to typing and keep going and before I know it I ahhh fuck it I'm just gonna hit "post" now.

But seriously, I don't pray much but will pray for your friend GGP. Glad you're ok.

Either using a pencil to drag back and forth across the A and B button on the NES controller to spam them, or using hands on the Power Pad to run faster or make your player jump a longer distance :) I've been cheating from the beginning

I didn't realize I was so young compared to the rest of the regulars. At 29 I'm on the higher end of age compared to the people I hang out with, but sounds like most of you are late 30s at least.

Until someone chimes in with their earliest memory being some early seventh gen game like Dead Rising or Twilight Princess I guess.

That's a good story. Like this type of stuff. I know you said you had a rough relationship with your pops. Who the hell doesnt though? Tell him this story and see if he remembers.

2 player Combat! for me, big plane vs 3 little ones
Two tanks with super bouncy bullets was my fav.

EDIT - OH SHIT I forgot about invisible tanks!

EDIT - Here's a sampling of all of them.

That pencil trick was way old school. I did it on mortal kombat xl recently.

Yes. This. That combat was the shit. We got the Atari in a garage sale. Just migrated to the US from Trinidad in 88 @8yrs old. That shit was played until it stopped working. And I ended up playing Tecmo Bowl over some kids house down the street. I was outside his house playing through his window because his mom was weird about people being in the house. Wasn't the best experience but we played many games of tecmo bowl and adventure island back then. Then we would come out and play touch football until it got dark. Like every day. I got the NES on a Christmas and dragon warrior not too long after. That shit was mad hard for young me. I remember grinding for crazy hours trying to get all the strong spells. Then when I got final fantasy on my 11th birthday and a copy of Nintendo power with Maniac Mansion on the cover. I was so happy. We had no kinda extra cash. Mom and us had over stayed our visas so she had to work odd jobs sewing and cleaning. Dad was a jack of all trades but his papers were correct so he had worked HVAC and me and my 2 younger brothers were good. Lived in a duplex with a huge yard and my cousins would all come over and we would kill duck hunt and guerilla war with the unlimited continues. It was a blast.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Spines ripped out of men's bodies after looking at a GamePro magazine guide. Men willing to do anything to see nude pixelated pyramids on a 32-bit female. All those moments will be lost, like dust in a cartridge.

Also I'm 30.

First gaming memory had to be SNES. I played older consoles, but don't remember them. I remember blaming anybody in the room that made any sound when I died in Super Mario World. My dad used to play one where you fly around in a helicopter rescuing people. Used to love playing football games with him until I got Xbox Live and hot way better than him. Another gaming memory was playing with my splits credentials friends after a few years of XBL.

I almost want to write a book with gaming memories. There are so many that are very memorable.

Sending positive thoughts to gamergirlpocket and her family. I hope your friend is doing well.

My first gaming memory that stands out is the first time I played Space Invaders in an arcade. I had played video games like pong, gun fight, and breakout before, but Space Invaders really stood out for me. I was hooked and could not stop playing. I have been hooked on video games ever since.

Lord, people looking for a nude code in Tomb Raider... I remember it getting so bad that Eidos actually ran print ads for Tomb Raider III inside GamePro that said "Sorry, still no nude code."

Sorry you had to deal with that. My sister lives there and I'm about an hour away. That's not what Charlottesville should be known for.

Earliest gaming memory is my cousin and I playing my Atari 2600. We were sometimes allowed to pick a game when my grandparents took us to Nichols (a department store like KMart or something). We usually ended up with something shitty because we didn't know anything about the games (notables were ET, Raiders of the lost ark and Space shuttle), but it was always fun to pick games and then try to figure them out. Sometimes, we got a really good one (night driver with the paddles, combat, realsports football, etc.)

...Aaaand things like this is why I love this thread. We're all different ages, from all different places, men and women, black and white, whatever... but we're all really the same nerds inside.

Prayers for your friend, gamegirlpocket. You and her are in my thoughts.

These are great posts.

Not my earliest memory, but one that stands out. My parents sent my brother to get my Christmas gift, a Power Glove, but he decided to wrap it up and hide it inside a giant cooler and that was filled with newspaper. My young gullible self (I think I was 6 or 7) had no idea what the hell was happening. Why would I get a cooler for Christmas? Finally, they had to explain to me to dig deeper and I was happy with my Power Glove.....until I tried to actually use it.

My earliest gaming memory is of the NES but on that system my older brother just got mad at me for playing things.

My earliest positive memory of gaming is the SNES. I played Secret of Mana all the way through in first grade and then immediately started playing it again. We had a tiny tv with a pull button to turn it on and it had lines across the screen but no one else ever used it. I had the SNES hooked up to that tv so no one ever bothered me on it. Mario Kart, Super Mario World, Tetris Attack, Bubsy, Aladdin (dying hundreds of times on the carpet flying level), The Lion King (I don't think I ever made it to be grown up Simba), and Earthbound (never beat the final boss but made it to him twice) all bring back fond memories. The SNES is my console I have the greatest early memories of.

I spent alot of time with my grandparents as a small kid and they were big into garage sales/flea markets. They had multiple early Atari systems and hundreds of games that they would accumulate. I would write out a list of all the games they had to cut down on duplicates. I have fond memories of my grandma and me playing Centipede & Megamania on the 2600 trying to beat each others high scores.

First early memory is from playing Risk on the original Mac in black and white. Then Duckhunt/Mario at a friend's house. Favorite early adult memory is Halo 2 and then later Halo 3 couch multiplayer for hours at a time with friends.

Speaking of which, would anyone like to run through Halo 5 Heroic Co-op with me? If so, hit me up here or online - GT is the same as my username here.

I've yet to beat the campaign despite this being my most played XB1 game. I'm down if you're okay watching cinematics. I beat the first few levels awhile back and don't remember the story so I would wanna watch the scenes.

My earliest gaming memories stretch back to the mid-seventies. I remember dropping quarters into pong games and then finally being able to play it at home. Next came a tank battle game we had to switch out with the pong game. Little bit of a headache, but we'd never even had a remote for the tv at this point so switching the wiring connected to the tv didn't seem so bad. And then came the atari video computer system. I vividly remember being completely blown away at the time.

And speaking to another recent topic- let's not forget the first achievements awarded for gaming were on atari.

My dad had a 2600 with a bunch of games. I don't really remember playing anything, though I'm sure I did. I do remember when he sold it at a yard sale and used the money to buy an NES.

I might have been five or six and I played that thing every chance I had. All three Super Mario games on repeat and bunches of random rentals.

My dad got a Game Genie, and I fully recommend letting your young kids cheat. Sure, the games might not be as difficult with something game breaking like invincibility, but infinite lives is almost a requirement at that age.

My grandparents also had an NES and I played it all the time when I was there.

Eventually sold that NES and upgraded to an SNES after we visited a work friend who had one. Super Mario World and Street Fighter II sucked us in at his place. After we got ours, it didn't take me that long to finish Mario World. I had my mom call my dad at work so I could let him know I did it. His friend was so jealous since he still hadn't beaten it.
