I like Tom Petty and am sad that he died, but I was taken back yesterday when more people seemed to be talking about that than the horrific attack in Las Vegas.

Seriously, I walked into a doctor’s office yesterday and the receptionist asked me, “Did you hear about Tom Petty?”. I’m thinking to myself, “yeah, but shouldn’t you be more upset and thinking about the Vegas shooting”?

I mean Petty was a long time smoker and I’m sure that contributed to his death. I’m not saying it’s not sad. But the lives of the 59 people killed in Las Vegas are just as important, if not more so because of the senselessness of the violence. They haven’t released all of the deceased’s names and demographics, but I understand that there were kids in that crowd. And hundreds of families are in pain.

Anyway, just thought it was kind of sad that more people were talking about Petty than the shooting.
I do get what you're saying, but I think the reason you saw more of that is because talking about a shooting can turn into a bunch of political BS whereas pretty much everyone knew and loved Tom Petty and can relate to his music. Not to belittle each and every life that was lost yesterday, I think it's just a more comfortable conversation for a lot of people even though it's the more difficult ones we should probably be having.

You're 100% right. What's also bumming me out is that both stories are allowing people to further ignore the massive humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and the inaction on the part of our government to help them. But they got a trophy dedicated to them, so that's cool.

Vegas, PR, TX, Mexico City. All in a month. I think those doomsday predictors are onto something.
Yeah, it’s all awful. And forgot to mention something my wife brought up, Tom Petty was the #1 trending topic on Twitter yesterday. Again, not that it’s not sad, but someone dying from natural causes vs. scores of dead and wounded in Vegas by some idiotic coward? (Not to mention PR and other disasters of late)

I guess I can get that and a post I put on FB about the shooting quickly turned political. Still just seems insensitive and we do need to be having those conversations.

There's something to be said for a larger public reaction to the death of a musician than mass violence. These things happen so frequently that our society has become immune to them, its just headlines and death stats. It's really weird to have been present for an act of terrorism / mass violence (Charlottesville) and have someone I love be one of the survivors, and see how quickly people stop talking about it or minimize the suffering of those involved as time progresses.

I think there's a direct correlation between the number of people reacting to an event and the number who have an actual emotional connection to said event.

Everyone has a Tom Petty story. Watch their eyes light up as their brain connects to particular memory - concert they went to or a life event when his music was the soundtrack.

On the other hand, bring up a tragedy, any tragedy/disaster. People will definitely say it's sad or it's wrong. But in a disconnected way. Unless they were directly involved/affected. Even though there are many tragedies occurring, fewer total people have a primary or secondary connection to the event as compared to people who feel connected to Tom Petty (or any well known person).

The greater the probability of connection to an event the greater the overall reaction to the event.

Do they break down trending topics geographically? I can see Tom Petty being #1 on a worldwide basis. Also, how is trending determined? Are the algorithms smart enough to identify similar topics and group them for ranking purposes? I couldn't find a trend for the US on Twitter's site from a quick Googling, but found the below, which raises another question - spelling errors.

Wrestling was also the top trend last night, so it doesn't really mean anything. The shooting will stay the topic of importance for the time being until nothing is ever done about it.

A few things:

1. Social media, by nature, is always moving towards the next topic, so it shouldn't be too surprising this happened.

2. Perhaps people were glad to celebrate the life of a musician and memories of that music than dwell on more negativity of a terrible event.

3. Social media is not the real world. As much as we all use it, it isn't always a true reflection of what people think or dwell on. It's only a glimpse at various thoughts, ideas and events traveling through time.

The last gwg and sale has had me thinking. I did not renew my gold ,which i do every year,so now im going into my back log 137 games all sales. So the cag in me is only going to do the big sales ,the end of the year sales black fridays sales and that ultimate game sale in summer . Oh yeah p.s i cancelled my xb x because ima wait i dont need a sunroof or leather im fine with my rims and v6 lol if u feel me u know what i mean ,next system is ps4 and switch and when the real next gen come out ill be in line. Xbox is makein me sad now they have nothing that ensure me they have nothing original coming out but bc games and i go forward not backwards come on yall. Sorry for the rant
Uh... what u say?

September has come and gone already - always tough to fit everything in.  Didn't end up playing a single one of my languishing x360 games which is unfortunate.  I did ok on the goal to play more simulators if I stretch the definition a bit:

  • wrapped up Aven Colony
  • completed Farming Simulator 2017
  • completed Abzu (swimming simulator?)
  • completed NBA 2017: The Prelude (basketball simulator?)
Also 'finished' Attack on Titan.  I say finished and not completed as I have no intention of grinding out some of the ridiculously time consuming achievements.  The game was a ton of fun though, and a huge surprise at that.  I picked it up on a whim with no knowledge of the anime or story, but thought the devs did a terrific job with the story-telling and aerial combat.  Worth a look I think.

The Vegas shooting is/was wall to wall coverage on TV at least. Not much talking about either here at work. I hate that the news can't do another story here and there to break it up. Haven't noticed much airtime spent on PR relief efforts for example. 24/7/365 news channels should be able to find time to do more then one story at time. Especially when hundreds or thousands of Americans are still suffering elsewhere.

Same thing happened in 2009 when Farrah Fawcett died the same day as Michael Jackson. Wall to wall coverage for the king of pop and barely a mention of her.

Yes the Vegas shooting should definitely be the lead but other stuff can/should be mentioned. Lots of filler in the little of the coverage I watched yesterday and this morning. This morning they were interviewing some guy who stayed on the same floor. Really?

I am glad all our Vegas CAG seem to be ok. Horrible day yesterday.

It was actually refreshing to use the Internet to see other events of the day. I certainly don't rely on social media for my news but it certainly alerts me to things that are happening that big media just doesn't care about or pay a whole lot of mind to. Mostly this forum and another and sometimes twitter usually is where I see a lot of stuff first. Also sometimes pop up alerts on my phone.

The bosses in Cuphead really aren't too bad. It's getting A ranks that makes it a pain. Almost done with Inkwell 1, I'm loving the challenge of getting high marks on the bosses. It's not even annoying. I actually smile and laugh a bit when I make a mistake. I know I'll get it right eventually.

Just talked to Microsoft support about the Groove music situation.  They ended up transferring me to the Xbox team but everyone is still pretty much in the dark about the refund procedures - my case is still open for future follow-up.  I'd recommend holding off for a few days if you need to call.

Got to play a little of Dragon’s Dogma at lunch and, man, is that combat sweet. I had played a bit of the original non-Dark Arisen version but not enough. Now I see what I was missing. Aside from running beautifully on X1 with the remaster, I think the Dark Arisen version also made some changes for the better mechanically as well. Anyway, I think in terms of ARPG combat, it’s second to none.

I try to keep my political posts to the Vs off topic board so I won't comment on any of that but I thought some of you might like to hear news from on the ground of Vegas instead of whatever the talking heads are feeding you.

Blood banks are doing appointments, they are booked out a couple days so you have to make an appointment to donate. Most major non profits have full cupboards, our group filled two trucks and a trailer to the brim with donations, food, blankets, water, stuffed animals, etc and worked w the fire department to find a place to donate it.

Our friends sister was one of the 59, a single mother of 3 boys. Her gofundme is already over $116k for her three sons, which is great to see. Everyone locally just wants to do something to help all the families effected.

Some of the hotel managers are talking about installing window sensors so they would know which room broke a window right when it happens.

I work pretty close to Mandalay Bay so I looked at it for a while last night after I left work. It used to just make me think of the shark aquarium I take my kids to but it's definitely changed. A lot of mixed emotions. It's wonderful to see the local community come together so much and to see the generosity of those that aren't local. That victims gofundme is at like 3.5million now.

I'm glad that the sale was good too, good sale week in honor of the victims, thanks Bloomy and Larry.

It's ironic how people are talking about disasters overshadowing other disasters, yet it seems everyone forgot that parts of Florida are still extremely fucked up from Irma as well.

Hey at least our president is doing his part in reminding us about Puerto Rico by constantly bitching about what a pain in the ass it is for him.

It takes months, if not years, for areas deeply damaged or destroyed by hurricanes and other natural disasters to recover, so there's no reason to act like that's surprising.

Had Clinton won, the focus in 2017 would have been on Puerto Rico's failed economy. But the media loves Trump, so they just focus on him.

This thread rocks. Decent mix of on / off topic. And the off topic stuff, which usually goes crazy on the internet, is very civilized.

Thank you.

finished up saints row IV, though its pretty bland I still found some enjoyment, starting saints row III tomorrow, this months GwG didn't interest me so I had to dig into the GwG backlog

This is good to hear about the community coming together following this horrific event.

Meanwhile, I’m disgusted by Trump’s visit to Puerto Rico today saying how “proud” he was about there only being 16 deaths. Tell that to some of the families that lost someone asshole. All the fucker did was pat himself on the back while he was there. Should have stayed back in DC than make an appearance as the anti-comforter-in-chief.

No shit. I'm from Florida and am well aware of that fact. I also wasn't 'surprised'. I was pointing out the irony of people saying how disasters are overshadowing other disasters, go on to list all the major disasters that happen in the last month, yet completely forget about a major hurricane.

That's what I like to hear! Only gets better when you unlock more classes as well, the hybrid classes in particular I found the most fun (especially Magick Archer, vortex + ricochet arrows is a thing of beauty.) Only complaint with the combat really is that the Warrior is very under powered. It's only allowed 3 skills and it's not as good as other melee classes when it comes to fighting large enemies (which is almost everything at endgame.) Quite a shame because it's the only 2 hand focused melee class.

How many minutes are we away from midnight now?

When I got to work yesterday and opened a new tab in Edge, the top TWELVE articles aggregated on that tab were about the shooting (with nothing about Tom Petty). I think the coverage of either event might be focused by geography because a buddy of mine in OR was pissed he had only heard about the Tom Petty thing and had to be told by his GF in Thailand about the LV shooting.

Soooo not to get back on topic or anything but any body play through Hitman?  I tried out the trial not long ago and enjoyed the short time you get to spend with it.  I'm trying to decide between it and Arkham Knight or just not spending money I don't really have to spend.

Not a super great deal but Return to Arkham is down to 20 bucks at best buy.  Cheaper than most but I don't know if its a new low.

It was the best game of 2016, so it's well worth it if you enjoyed the tutorial areas.

^ I haven't tried it on Windows 10 yet, but holy crap am I bad at the game. I really do feel as though platforming is my worst genre, next to fighting probably. It's almost as if my parry goes off a second later that I expect it to..... Maybe I'm just getting older and my reflexes aren't what they used to be.

I am in love with Taco Bell right now. I won a Xbox one x. Never ever won anything like this before. Been trying daily but never expected to really win.

I had the 5 dollar box today from taco bell and it did NOT come in a box with a xbox code like it did before, so stores have probably run out by now, ends tomorrow

congrats. The taco bell bundle includes Forza 7 so assuming you're keeping the digital version, you can sell off the physical version.

The forza 7 xbox rewards giveaway is a great way to get people like my to buy forza 7. I never intended to buy forza 7 right away but then i won the vip for it. I got a good deal on the standard digital version so i splurged.

I'm gonna have to be away from my Xbox for 2 days. Anybody tried Cuphead on Windows 10?

By not going to be getting it on my Xbox One due to my throttled internet I thought about going this route (because I can take my laptop to my local library) but I don't have a wireless way to pay with one of my Xbox controllers and I'm guessing mouse and keyboard would be difficult.

And I used that response because I'm confused on how one feels Trump thinks Puerto Rico is a pain in his ass.

Yeah it’s really confusing the Taco Bell site shows a disc copy but the ign Xbox one x unboxing with the Taco Bell guy shows a digital copy. I already have it so I’m hoping it’s digital so I can sell it easier. Another thing I find strange is the official Xbox site said we are getting the x early. The email I got from Taco Bell told me it would not ship for 4-6 weeks after October 4th. I’m cool with it getting here late though you can’t beat free.
