Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

Has anyone seen any really good deals on like a 4TB external hard drive? Most seem to be around the $105-$110 mark. Would love to find one under $100.
add them to amazon cart to watch and work on getting amazon credit in the meantime to make the price even cheaper

Got Cuphead from a CAG for $15 the other day. Not really my style game, but figured I should get it because it’s one of the big X1 fall releases. Started it up yesterday and it’s fantastic so far. Finished the first island last night. Game is difficult, but not as mind crushingly hard as I expected. I’m sure it’s gonna get a lot more difficult though

They've been a Best Buy Deal of the Day a few times I think on one occasion the 4TB Seagate was about $80 or so I think the WD MyBook has gone as low as $90 or so? If anything I'd wait until Black Friday because worst comes to worst the 4TB MyBook always goes on sale for $100 at worst.

Fry's has one for $89 with promo code.
Thanks guys!

The Halo Wars 2 update is 16 GB, but like others have mentioned every patch with that game has been a pain in the ass that will typically result in you being forced to download the whole thing again.

If you have an external drive that you can have another copy stored on this is what works for me:

I go to start the game.
I get prompted that there's an update.
It will say "updating" in the queue but just sits there never making any progress.
I then do a hard reboot of my XB1 as trying a restart will lock it up.
I turn it back on.
Now the update is downloading fine but it's 41.70 GBs.
fuck that.
I uninstall it and then copy it back over to wherever it was before (it's important to not start the update again until you have made another copy just in case).
The update tile for HW2 is now missing but I go and start the game as normal.
I see the prompt about the 16 GB update again and start it back up.
It then works perfectly and doesn't freeze and/or try to download the whole game again.

So yeah, that's just one perk of life with a data cap lol

Finally got 100 medals in Sky Force and thus unlocking the achievement it was a bit of a choir and you will need some skills to pull it off but doable.
I recruited my 5 yr old to help me out. The only thing he has trouble with is staying un-hit. So we're working through the medals slowly and I try to solo it for the "stay untouched" ones. We are no way close to 100 though.

It happens to everyone. Don’t feel too bad.

The only downside I see to Playstation controllers are the inability to change batteries if they die.
I was surprised no one mentioned this sooner. I rarely use my PS4, and decided last week to trade it in. Controllers were both completely dead, and I had to dig around to find my 10ft microusb cable. I love the fact that with the xbox, I just slap in a new set of eneloops and I'm done - takes less than a minute.

[In general I prefer the feel of the xbox controller as well, but was thoroughly dismayed when the textured grip on my elite controller started peeling off; judging by the online comments it seems that glue/wrap combo is a manufacturing defect.]

This gen I bought the PS4 day one as a protest to Microsoft's launch policies, but a year or two later returned to the xbox camp due to the controller, achievements, exclusives, and GUI. I also liked the Kinect, since it was an opportunity for innovation, and even though it's now basically dead, Sony initially did even less with its Eye camera (which I also bought unfortunately.)

I may pick up a Sony again as the rumors for PS5 are already making the rounds. I expect it will offer backwards compatibility with PS4, more graphics horsepower, and an integrated 4k bluray player. With the X1X out, Sony is now playing catch-up again, but with their installed base, I'm sure they're not sweating it.

My one wish for 2018 is that Microsoft releases a kickass VR solution for the X1X. Not only will it put those teraflops to good use, but like the Kinect, I really want to see continued innovation in gaming.

PsiScream, I think that backwards compatibility is going to be the key factor. MS is on this 100%, Sony wants you to re-buy all your stuff or pay for streaming. And nintendo doesn’t care at all.

If I’m going to keep buying Xbox games, at this point, I think I’ll always be able to play them on a future Xbox without paying another dime.

I think, if there is a generational cut machine (Xbox 2 or whatever) in five years, I will be able to take that years hot games and play them on the new box, and my whole library.

Maybe I’ll feel that way about Sony someday, but they aren’t proving it yet.

It's the button prompts for save states which I kept Shaq'ing. 'Press Y to save progress!' I did it wrong 5 times in a row and couldn't figure out why. That's when the shame set in.

Sony was pretty blatant in the original Dual Shock's design stealing being inspired by the SNES controller, but at least had the decency to use completely different buttons. There are 22 other letters in the alphabet!!
I missed the bus to PS town and didn't get a ps3 until a couple years ago. I picked up Shadow of Mordor and proceeded to lose every "last chance" quicktime event. I get it that xbox was the one that used similar symbols and colors, and then moved everything around, but what little rhythm games I played hardwired my brain for xbox.

That, and PS's insistence on using shoulder & triggers wrong. Controllers had triggers added specifically for shooting games, but the default is always to use the buttons to aim & fire and the triggers for grenades, etc.

I finally had some time to stop by our big retro store and burn some credit. Picked up Prince of Persia and Sid Meyer's Pirates for $4 each. Dead to Rights must suck or be ultra common, as it was only $2, but I passed when I saw it had lock on targeting for it's shooting. Ninja Gaiden Black and FPS Black were both $15 though. No Bloodrayne, Fuzion Frenzy, or KoF in stock.

For Halo 4 glitchers, my games are still working as of right now. I can't find any more discussion of it, just day old posts in a Reddit thread that people smartly managed to keep voted fairly low. Maybe it will fly under the radar.

so are the xbox one x updates coming to regular xbox's?

29+ gig update for dr4 and 15gig halo 5 update sure seems like it. I don't want that shit

Whoosh...that was a tense game. Tigers didn’t look so hot the first half but returned to form in the second to pull it out.

Make sure you don’t have the 4K asset switch set on in storage/backup settings. Isn’t by default so shouldn’t be but surprised you’re seeing that big of updates without it.

Haven’t played SP or Zombies yet, but the WWII MP is pretty solid. Not as fun as BOIII (which, as far as I’m concerned, was the best CoD MP ever), but certainly solid.

yeah I just researched and mine is NOT turned on and those updates are still that big

I use my external as the default download location I dunno if that matters?

I cancelled the updates and it uninstalled 3 huge games completely.....

lol it deleted halo 5 quantum break and dr4 completely by cancelling those huge ass updates so I now have over 200 gig to download, thanks Microsoft

Don’t know if it’s just me but Gears 4 seems to look even better on the S than it did before the X update. Colors are really popping and it looks more crisp than ever.

Yea after being down for over 24hrs, it's fund to play now. I only play domination and I wish the USS Texas map would come up more often

Seeing them support the Xbox One S that has this as its biggest graphical feature makes me wish I could go grab a S for my upgrade. I'll watch BF deals, as Albert Penello says they're be some great deals on that then. Not sure my TV supports HDR though, will need to look into that too.

Most recent TV's seem to support HDR. I bought my current one when I upgraded from the 360 to 1S when that came out. I find it makes a significant difference with contrasts and sharpness.

But didn’t Gears 4 have HDR even before the latest update for X?
Well what you say sounds like the effect of HDR. This is why I was trying to find out what are the assets yesterday, so I can test if there's a difference after doenloading the 1X enhancements. I still cant seem to get by doing that, even when i leave the "download 4k" option checked.

Could you go to your Mygames and highlight Gears 4 then press LB+RB+"back" combo? It will tell you a bunch of code, and if you look towards the bottom you'll see "Assets: Xbox-Durango.." and stuff like that. Could you tell me what is written there under "assets"?

same, i would've wanted to play the visual novels, but can't find my Halo 4 box anywhere =(

I’ll have to check that.

In other news less than 48 hours til X!!! Damn falling back making us wait another hour.

Just to prepare myself for the inevitable markdown, is there any reason to get Doom on disc over digital? Since that major update that made the season pass null and void, didn't it make it so you have to download the full game over again?

Also side note, I still can't tell the difference in 720p or 1080p let alone 4K unless you have them side by side and demand I spot the differences, I'm not going to be able to tell.

Then you must be one of the few that can't. Back in late 2013 and throughout 2014, everyone and their mothers claimed they could tell the difference between 1080p, 900p and/or 720p from 100 kilometers miles, away and even on 24-inch TV's. But now, stuff like 1440p, 1620p and/or 2160p sounds like kryptonian technology to some/most people.

And hey, I'm not taking a jab at YOU, I'm just pointing out how everything has changed in the last 3 years.
Even with an 85" TV, you would have to sit within 5.5 feet to tell the difference between 1080p and 4K (assuming you have really good vision) and on a 55" TV you would have to sit 3.5 feet or less. Basically if you had two 85" TVs next to each other, one 4K and one 1080, and you were sitting six feet away you couldn't tell the difference. The average American sits nine feet away.

I have one of the greatest visions of all time, so I can tell the difference. I can also always tell when PS is used to capture footage, because it always looks better.

To quote Dave Chappelle, "I honestly can't tell the difference. All I know is, Pepsi paid me most recently so... it just tastes better."

This isn’t correct. Look at this article (and rtings is considered one of the best in terms of TV picture). There’s a chart about 2/3 way through the article. For a 55” TV, which is fairly common for large screens these days (it’s what I have), it says the distance is closer to 8 feet to tell the difference. Where did you get 3.5 feet? In this chart, that’s for a tiny 25” screen.

http://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/4k-ultra-hd-uhd-vs-1080p-full-hd-tvs-and-upscaling-compared

For graphics, I’d argue the difference can be more pronounced because the overall representation of something can be all together different. You aren’t seeing the SAME image displayed to compare.

Some of the videos showing the difference between standard X1 and the new X1X really show this. Devs have changed some things drastically to take advantage of it. From the way a face or the detail on a set of armor is, it isn’t upscalled to 4K. It’s actual changes to the content itself.

This reminds me of people arguing over Final Fantasy 15. It runs at a lower resolution on Xbox and when I look at screenshots side-by-side I can see the difference and Playstation clearly looks better. but when the game is in motion I think it looks wonderful and it doesn't matter.

I think part of the thing with 4K is that it's not a matter of just having a display capable of the resolution, because there are some shitty 4K displays out there. In terms of Gaming, it's not just a resolution increase, but what developers are able to do with that additional horsepower for subtle changes and improvements. Textures, lighting, etc. The 360 games getting the 1X updates are a great example.

At the same time, 1080p still looks very good, and the jump to 4K is not nearly as big a deal as the jump from standard definition to 1080 was. same with Blu-rays and DVDs versus VHS.

X day is upon us.

Awesome week. Grabbing Xbox X, Super Lucky’s Tale. Considering NFS, but will probably just play the Access trial and try to hold out for less than $30

Actually already have Super Luckys Tale. Gonna try for a few now, I’ll update impressions

Just realized today is Daylight Savings Time.

What kind of bullsh!t is this - making me wait an extra hour for my Xbox One X...?

LoL - I have never complained about DST in the Fall before...

Does the new Minecraft update version not allow shared content across profiles? The Xbox edition I had purchased a few packs and my son would be able to use them on his account but now with this new update Minecraft version it does not work anymore. Is there a workaround to this or are things I bought locked to my account only?

I’m still pissed that I have this damn training class this week. Really going to hinder my enjoyment of the X, having to actually get up earlier and pay attention.

Why this week of all the weeks? :(

they tried to force 4k updates on my regular one which were massive, cancelled the updates which deleted the entire games

and I didn't have 4k enabled and couldn't play the games while their huge updates were dling

no idea wtf kinda shit that was as I had to redownload over 200gig from cancelled updates I didn't have enabled

happen to anyone else?

It is a conspiracy, and they are all in on it. You didn't hear it from me, but in 6 months they are going to take away an hour of potential game playing time across all consoles. Backlogs should not be affected, though.

Decided to finally work on the backlog again and picked Halo 3.

And I'm getting a "been there, done that" feeling from the first two games:

- I still don't like killing those grunts - they remind me of Ewoks that sound like those "roger, roger" robots from Star Wars.

- I don't like having to keep picking up weapons and would rather have ammo pickups instead.

- Still no "zoom and shoot" with most weapons. Even though I'm no expert in the practice, it would make the game more fun IMO (maybe multiplayer makes up for this?)

- The dual welding is still fun, but I've done it before with Timesplitters so again, nothing new.

- Not feeling the story right now, but I get the feeling that's going to change with these "Cortana flashbacks" I am experiencing.

Right now, my favorite part of the game is the menu layout and the loading screen:
