Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Defintely check out DarkStalkers and BlazBlue (any version honestly) like the other guy said as well, but do you access to Xbox 360? Not everything he mentioned is backwards compatible.

Some fun not so mainstream fighting games on Xbox that I play consistently

Ragnagard

Galaxy Fight Universal Warriors

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, or P4A if no xbox 360

Waku Waku 7

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core plus

Fighting Vipers

Fatal Fury Special but Garou Mark of the wolves is on gamepass, great game

Samurai Shodown V Special was just released couple weeks ago, but I do like 4 (and 2 too!)

Throw in Last Blade 2 while I'm at it.

Other "fun" but more known titles

Soul Calibur 2

KOF XIII

DBZ Budokai HD Collection

Dead or Alive 4

NEOGEO Battle Coliseum

Super Turbo Street Fighter HD Remix or whatever (I remember when they released that online beta!)

SF3 hells yes

Random titles that I enjoyed but have never heard anyone outside of Youtube talk about

World Heroes 2

Ninja Masters

Karnov's Revenge

Savage Reign and Kizuna Encounter (sequel) I have as a combo on PS4, both are available on xbox

Those ACA Neogeo games will have features to the fighting genre not typically found in those mainstream ones, its a very refreshing change-up.
The Neo-Geo games are great because they jack up your gamerscore so fast. Also, the achievements are easy to clear out for most games, and require no online play.

I mean, they're good games too, don't get me wrong! I love paying eight dollars (or less) for games that used to cost two hundred dollars back in the 1990s.

While we're recommending fighting games, I'm going to say King of Fighters 2002 Ultimate Match. KOF hit a rough patch after the SNK bankruptcy, leaving us with some pretty crappy games, but KOF 2002 UM offers the grand finale that the NESTS Saga really deserved.

I bought PS Plus on Black Friday last year, and I immediately remembered why I hadn't bothered - Sony's bass ackwards policy of not letting you purchase games that you claimed as Plus games until the subscription runs out. Microsoft gives you the choice of spending your own money to own an Xbox One game just in case your Gold runs out.
I noticed with PS+ plus games that are claimed is that is shows one could potentially buy them via the PS Store on PS4. I don't know if that still holds true since I saw it a few months ago and it could be a complete fluke.

Go ask for help around that policy on the PSN forum and you'll get PS fanboys telling you that's the way things are and Xbox' system is the one that doesn't make sense.
Stuff like this is exactly the reason why I have both systems. I used to be a major Sony fanboy until I got over myself and bought an OG Xbox and 360. Sony and MS both have their strengths and weaknesses and I enjoy playing games on my X1S and PS4.

No internet in the new house currently, and I'm dumbfounded at how limited the X1 is even in offline mode. Tried to look at an achievement list to check progress, and you can't even look at a game's list without being connected. Kinda ridiculous.

On a related note, probably going with Verizon Fios based on what's available in my area (and a strong desire to never do business with Comcast again). Anyone have experience with Fios? I didn't see anything explicitly stating no data caps, which is more or less a requirement IMHO.

I switched to FiOS from Optimum last fall and have had 0 regrets. I have gigabit internet and DVR now and my bill is still cheaper than my former Optimum one.
There's no data caps (though I'm spoiled because Optimum didn't have them either).
My only complaint is the cable boxes are kind of shit in terms of performance when loading the overlay but they just rolled out a new set of boxes that are 4K-ready and seem to run better.
This is assuming you're looking for cable, of course. They have decent internet-only plans.

Thanks for the info. If we get a TV package, we'll probably just stream / cast it via laptops. I personally just want internet, but if it's cheaper to bundle, the GF will insist on doing the package deal (which is hard to argue against). If I'm doing 4k content, it's probably via the Xbox.

Also considering if we want the Verizon-issue router or if I should splurge on a nice one. Any feedback on if the Verizon equipment is good enough? I also hate the idea of renting the equipment vs owning it, since you'd theoretically pay more in the long run if you have it for 1-2 years and don't even own it.

I watched TV this weekend through my provider's app, hoping to get 1080p signal at least instead of broadcast 1080i. I realized I missed being able to rewind wanting to see a highlight again. I'm surprised how many people have HBO subscriptions.

Seems like you already have a good reason to buy instead of rent. For any ISP I've had, even if the equipment was "good enough" or even "pretty good"... it didn't matter if the cost didn't work out in my favor.

The only time I've ever encouraged renting has been for tech-troubled older relatives, because for them they're not just renting the equipment... they're also paying for it to be somebody else's problem if something fails. For myself, I'm willing to save the money and be my own tech support.

I promise I saw 1080p before when clicking info on my spectrum receiver. I guess not? GOT had me looking for 1080p but 1080i was the top option. I'm no tech but I thought 720p looked a tad better.

I also hate the idea of renting the equipment vs owning it, since you'd theoretically pay more in the long run if you have it for 1-2 years and don't even own it.
dont know about verizon equip but its cheaper to buy than rent, also at least with spectrum, found out the hard way that when i bought a non approved modem that my internet was alot faster and had less issues but they burnt it out in a year since they distrup non approved modems since they cant throttle/cut the signal, picked up an approved one after that, slower but they wont burn out the modem, mostly just depends on what u want to spend, wasnt ur router answer but i think they only care about the modem never a good idea to rent modems, been using an asus tri band for years has been great and regularly updates its security firewall and program

Progressive will always look better than interlaced since every line gets refreshed at once.

Ha hello fellow Charter/Spectrum customer, yeah no 1080p but also no data caps

I got rid of cable in favor of streaming services a couple years ago and couldn't be happier.  The picture quality is ten times better (just from the all digital clarity alone - nevermind whatever the actual resolution is) and the pricing, options, and flexibility is too.  It's so nice to know that I can switch from DirecTV Now to HuluTV to Sling, etc. with no contracts all at the drop of a hat.  It's probably not for everyone, but I think most people don't realize how truly antiquated cable services are in comparison.

FYI, I have Frontier (formerly Verizon FiOS) with no data caps and 75/75 service, so maybe that makes a difference in my options.  I guess if I had data caps and slow speeds, I'd settle for cable, too.

Marooners kind of sucks. It is only mini games without a board game connecting them, but most of the games are Bomberman-esque last man standing fights or collecting coins. All the games share the same controls as well. Really basic, with only a few locations and games, probably more fun with local co-op. I'm not sure if there is headset support or not as no one was talking and there is no mic indicator.

Yeah, I will probably buy one then. It's been a long time since I've had to mess with my own networking (have just lived places where it was already set up) but I've done it plenty in the past. At this rate I'll end up building a PC again...

I'll look into this as well, thanks!

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has a release date for June, and they overhauled the art style after folks were critical of it. This game sure looks like the HD sidescrolling Castlevania follow-up I've wanted since the end of the GBA / DS era of the series.

Sorry for back to back posts but figured I'd give this one it's own.

It looks so much better, now it's the level of quality visually that stands up with the classic 2D stuff. I think this is Iga's first real 3D game of this style so I guess it's not that surprising it took this long to really nail the visuals at the end of development.

It's coming out two days after my birthday so I guess it's going to the top of the list.

I just got around to trying it tonight. As a 4-player local game it's pretty fun. But I can see how playing online would be kind of lame.

It seems like Microsoft tries to give us one local multiplayer title most months. I can see why some don't like it but I definitely appreciate it.

I should have Trials Evolution. Honestly liked some of those earlier Trails games even more than the newer ones so that’s a nice add.

NG3 was the worst of the series but still nice to complete it.

Gaming news round up:

Epic Game bought Rocket League creator Psyonix. I feel like this means a LOT of money changed hands. Rocket League is consistenly in the most played games on Steam and I assume the consoles. Before this purchase, they were an independent developer that self-published so I imagine they were already rolling in money since the game is so successful. I don't think this will impact the console versions for the most part, but it's causing an uproar on PC because they announced it will be leaving Steam when it's released on the Epic Games Store later this year.

https://www.rocketleague.com/news/psyonix-is-joining-the-epic-family-/

Subverse broke $2,100,000. Basically this a porn game with Mass Effect party interaction, X-COM combat, and Nier Automata shooting for space exploration. Hopefully it ends up good since the team has no game development experience as far as I'm aware, just a lot of animation experience. It's a bit hard to tell how it will turn out since no one is using their real name. If it was made by a different team I'd wonder if they'd do a heavily censored version for console release, but I don't think it's remotely in the cards. That sort of thing has only really been done with visual novels as far as I'm aware.

Crowdfunding has really died down lately, with usually about 2 games breaking $1,000,000 a year in the past few. For context, this made more than Divinity Original Sin 2, Indivisible, and Kingdom Come Deliverance.

Link not exactly NSFW, but I'd still click caution.

It sounds like Bioware Edmonton is likely transferred the majority of development over to Austin, if multiple leads are officially on Dragon Age 4 now.

I haven't had time to watch the Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal, but it seems Randy Pitchford's permanent case of foot-in-mouth syndrome has flared up again. During the showing he claimed BL3 will have "no microtransactions" right after saying that there will be cosmetics available for purchase. When this was pointed out, he continued to whine on Twitter, seen in the comments of this tweet.

I'm so excited for Trials Evolution and I already own it. There was no reason it wasn't BC. Love the old trials games more than the new ones

They just picked three games off their shelf and made a mashup, didn’t they?
Really, they make sense to me. If you're going to have a high level of dialogue with companions that you'll be getting close with, the Bioware style makes a lot of sense. I assume turn-based, grid-based combat is much easier to design for a first time team than a third-person shooter that may have physics and elemental attacks. Twin-stick style shooting presumably falls under that umbrella as well, as actual space combat could be pretty complicated. Really, it seems pretty ambitious when their current audience would likely be blown away by just the dialogue portion, akin to the structure of a visual novel. It's not like mashing up genres to make up your gameplay is a bad thing anyways, plenty of games both big and small do that.

The only negative I really have is that you can't play as a woman, but I can see that that would likely mean completely new animations and a presumably more recorded dialogue unless the main character is silent like older Bioware games. There are a couple options for re-use of the animation that people would probably not be that satisfied with, but double the MC voice acting doesn't really have a shortcut.

Unless you like setting up and troubleshooting stuff I wouldn't bother with your own router. The Fios one also sets up a MoCA network which their cableboxes use for guide data and stuff. Also you can fairly easily get a Ethernet drop anywhere you have a working Coax. You can buy a Moca Adapter and plug it into the Coax. It will give you an Ethernet port (Some have 4 ports even) built in. I have a 4 port switch hanging off one of the MoCA adapters I bought in the basement. I can hardwire my PS4 and XBox and other gear. Wireless works pretty good on everything but occasionally hiccups. Will get an 8 port switch so I can plug in ALL my stuff.

If you remove their Quantum router and setup your own they likely will NOT support your router/setup. Unless you have a large house/apartment the Quantum router should be good enough IMO. You can buy it online from them if you don't want to rent it.

I had Fios for 3 years and switched to Cablevision/Altice/Optimum in November. My deals were up and FiOS wasn't willing to play ball. Much faster downloads but slower uploads with Optimum (I had 50/50 with Verizon now I have 200/35). I get more channels with Optimum that my wife cares about and we are saving a bit. Likely switch back when our 2 year promo runs out with Optimum.

FiOS I don't believe does caps anywhere. Certainly not here in NY.

Is anyone on mobile that isn't using tapatalk still getting that awful ad? It takes over your screen and I need to hit the back button like 4 times for it to go back to CAG. It isn't happening as much as the other week but it's been like once a day for the last two days.

Agreed, Trials kind of lost it's "soul" after Ubisoft bought them. They also ruined the Toy Soldiers series.
I haven't played a ton of it but the new trials isn't too bad but I also haven't played any of the pre ubisoft trials games since the X1 came out. Glad to see evolution added to BC though, it's the one I've played the least. Now all the trials games are on X1 I believe, minus the 360 version of fusion. I would probably pick up the newer toy soldiers game if it goes for $5 just to see how it is for a few hours at least. The fact that they wouldn't patch it to fix the broken achievement is off putting but it doesn't really affect the game so it isn't the worst I guess. It just seems like the perfect candidate for GWG.

New Trials is still fun as far as the gameplay goes; all the other junk just gets in the way. Loot boxes to customize your rider and bikes, a huge and unnecessary world map instead of a track list, and people have complained of bugs though I personally haven't encountered any.

Does anyone have a suggestion on the Council? It looks interesting and it’s finally down to a a good price point to me. Thanks

Toy Odyssey sucks. Movement is stiff, text boxes are small and hard to read, tutorials keep popping up interrupting combat, and starter enemies do way more damage than you do (first enemy 1hko'd me before the room finished loading). I kept playing for an hour or so, but wasn't enjoying it.

Save your money for a good roguelike, like Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy, Gungeon, etc.

Anyone else still having a problem with CAG flipping over to this Goodluckday.site crap? I can’t get away from it. I’ve cleared my browser cache, don’t know what else can be done.

Yes, it’s weird sometimes I find if I’m at home and switch off WiFi, use LTE instead, that bypasses it. I do get it on other sites too sometimes. Trying to find a way to block the domain.

RIP Peter Mayhew aka Chewbacca
Noooo! He was such a nice person, an all around great guy. Met him at Celebration once, I was sitting down taking a break and he just sat next to me to do the same. Started chatting up, just such a nice guy. He was missed in TLJ and Solo and now he'll simply be missed.
