Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

1. Finish AC Syndicate

2. AC Rogue

3. AC Origins

4. AC Odyssey
I feel like the games stories aren't connected nearly as much as they were during the early Ezio and Altair days. Personally I'd probably try and go for release order at this point since they've been innovating on their gameplay more lately. If you're already working on Syndicate I'd just wrap it up, then go to Rouge since it's still in the old style. Origins started the new combat and loot system and Odyssey refined that to basically an RPG.

With a game series that has a long running history it seems like release order is best in general. Both because gameplay generally evolves over time, and because many games tend to reference past works to some degree regardless of them being in the past of future, like Metal Gear (huge references like returning characters) or Resident Evil (small references like in-game files or bonus costumes).

Grabbing $1 for sure for Grim Fandango, Inner Space looks good too. Bard's Tale looks a bit jank but I'll check it out. Hopefully an Xbox one has been discussed by now. These PS4 bundles have been pretty good compared to the average PC ones nowadays. This one and the Capcom bundle specifically. Talos Principle and Killing Floor 2 on PS4 exclusive on consoles and pretty good, so I might try and swing the higher tiers. Cheap bundles are probably going to be the one weakness on my don't-buy-more-games plan.
Just in case I didn't understand there are actually versions of Talos Principle and Killing Floor 2 on the Xbox, but I've never seen a great sale on either. I almost completed Killing Floor 2 just with one of the other benefits of Games with Gold the Free to Play weekend.

To bring this idea full circle, we have Kingdom Hearts, which I wanted to replay the series before 3, but debated doing it in release order or chronological order, since the release order jumps around a lot. 1, 1.5 (CoM), 2, 2.5 (Coded), 1.75 (358/2), 0 (BbS), 2.75 (3D), and now 3. I think this is part of what attributes to the "what the heck is going on in the story?" problem.

I'm an idiot. They must have been timed.

I think Kingdom Hearts is an outlier. There is a ton of material spread out across many platforms until those HD collections came out. Even still, there are some mobile games that have canon lore that never came out in English, and new stuff in the current mobile game with some story stuff that apparently isn't even out yet. Personally I plan on just playing both the PS4 collections before getting to 3 if I like those, though I wish they'd come to Xbox.

So where does Rogue fit in the order of Ass Creed games? Also, can you block/ignore someone when using mobile?
1 - 2 - Brotherhood - Revelations - 3 - 4 - Rouge - Unity - Syndicate - Origins - Odyssey

Rouge is a sequel (prequel?) to 4 I think, and has the same ship combat.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I allow you tell me how to respond to a GWG announcement. fuck off with that arrogant attitude of yours. Take that entitled attitude of yours and shove it. You can have your opinion all you want but you sure as hell are no in position to tell other people how they should react.

fuck you.
Yikes.

Every month where I get at least one game I don't already own is a great GWG month in my opinion :)

It is just icing on the cake for my XBox Live Gold subscription. I can't believe people actually complain about free games.

Back in the day when I first started playing video games Atari and Mattel did not give out free cartridges every month.
Agreed. There have been some Xbox 360 games in GWG that I wasn't keen on, but hey, they're mine now, and they're mine to keep forever. FOREVER!!! (lightning strikes in the background)

As for TooManyGamez, he may have an opinion, but it strikes me as an extremely biased and fanboyish opinion fueled more by personal prejudice than the actual quality of the games offered. Next month I'll be able to play the Castlevania knock-off I wanted to try, but didn't really want to buy. Same deal with the sequel to Bomberman. That's easily worth the, what, five dollars I paid for that month of Xbox Live, even though I don't really play games online. I regret nothing. He doesn't have to pay for Games with Gold, but at the same time he doesn't need to be so adversarial about it.

I typically lurk more then post, but I saw the high post count since last login and I thought something exciting had been posted to only see us bickering about the value of gamepass. I did enjoy reading through a few of the posts and found it a bit refreshing to see some people weigh in with thoughtful commentary.

In regards to the games for Feb. I still have a disc copy of AC Rogue I bought for $10 two years ago sitting unopened.

I started Syndicate a few months back and have slowly been playing it. Can any AC fans suggest an order for playing the following games? Does it really matter anymore storywise?

1. Finish AC Syndicate
2. AC Rogue
3. AC Origins
4. AC Odyssey
I would finish Syndicate (be sure to play the Jack the Ripper DLC), then Origins, Odyssey, and finally Rogue. I personally hated Rogue, other than a ridiculous fight with the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow. You may be burned out on AC games by the time you finish Odyssey, so it's no great loss if you end up skipping Rogue.

With gamepass clearly influencing the selections,I hope for Microsofts sake GwG ends very soon. Another absolutely abysmal month. MS hasnt had a decent GwG month since probably 2017, while Sony is just absolutely embarrassing them.

Also, WTF is up with all the Assassins Creed and Star Wars games? What in the hell gives them the idea that it's a good idea to release a game in each series almost every month?
Welcome back Ubiquetous, TooLegitTooQuit, IAmBicycle, ILoveVaseline, IHadMail. Surge is a good game, maybe you just suck at Dark Souls type of games

Do you guys want to see a Humble Xbox Bundle? Another PlayStation bundle has started, and the publishers involved are doing an AMA on Reddit right now. They are also trying to gauge interest in a bundle for Xbox, so if you'd like to see one, share your voice there. https://old.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/al3f9c/we_make_and_publish_games_lots_of_them_ama_also/efaijye/
Why on earth are they trying to gauge an interest in :xb1: versions of HB? OF COURSE there is interest!

Ditto. Another great month for my backlog because I own none of them digitally and a good enough month for me because I might one day play some of them.

1 - 2 - Brotherhood - Revelations - 3 - 4 - Rouge - Unity - Syndicate - Origins - Odyssey

Rouge is a sequel (prequel?) to 4 I think, and has the same ship combat.
It's technically more of a sequel to 4 since Haytham Kenway is in it and he's the son of whatshisname from 4. I know one of the characters from 4 is in it briefly, but you do spend quite a bit of time with Haytham Kenway from 3, so maybe the same timeline as AC III. Ha at this point it's just as all jacked up as Kingdom Hearts anyway.

The Bard's Tale is hilarious! Sadly I have yet to ever finish it, I've started over numerous times but always get distracted by some other game. I think it has been at least three years since I started over last. If I had it playable on the One I just might again. I own the PS2 version, but my PS3 is no longer hooked up, and I have no desire to change that. Plus I HATE the controller design Sony is so keen on. They are too small for my big ass hands. Before anyone asks, Nintendo is worse! Don't get me started on the Wii Remote bullshit. That just got swallowed in my hand, never to be seen again.

Great month for GwG! Best in awhile!

I actually was pretty excited to see Bloodstained and Jedi Knight. I put off buying Bloodstained because I don't like the switching characters bit, but I love me a metroidvania. I never actually played Jedi Knight, and that will be a cool game for my nephew as well. Bomberman and Rogue look like decent backlog filler and cheevo grinding for months I get distracted by my friends' leaderboard.

I also thought the ps+ offerings were pretty weak this month...

All this static over free games........
I am sure someone can chime in on the whole "free" aspect of the GWG... even though if you do your bing stuff its really free... for a while LOL

Really like next months line up, lets see if Sony goes out with a bang for PS3 amd Vita on Plus "free" games as it is their last month.

I wonder what those "Ignore preferences" actually do. Oh, that's right, now I remember. Hadn't done it in a while.
Also, can you block/ignore someone when using mobile?
Lol, yeah...problem is that if you block someone but other people are quoting them left and right to respond, you'll still see the responses, I think.

So where does Rogue fit in the order of Ass Creed games? Also, can you block/ignore someone when using mobile?
To go into a bit more detail, it is linked to Unity and takes place before it. It also takes place before 3 (like pornosaur said, they share a character) but isn't required to be played in order I feel. Those games all have small connections that are cool to see but aren't as connected story wise like the ezio trilogy. I played 3, unity and then rogue and didn't feel like I was messing the story up. Also like pornosaur said the story is so all over the place , especially compared to release order.

in before someone misspells rogue as rouge

Meh....I pay for multiplayer access, which I'd do without the games. Games are a bonus for me.

and even if you only join Gold for GwG it comes to $1.25/game assuming you paid $60 for the membership which I doubt anyone here does so it's even less. Who here has never spent $1.25 for a game just to try it out?

Mmmmm.. I want to believe you but it lacks some numbers.. cold statistics, some dictionary meaning of Free and maybe 1 or 2 F**ks.. I give you a B for effort, better luck next time.

J/K 😂

I saw these guesses for the Gamepass email riddle on True Achievements and figured I'd share the list here.

January 31st
Thimbleweed Park or Trackmania Turbo
February
Crackdown 3
Nidhogg 2
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
Schrödinger's Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark
Bendy and the Ink Machine

You can make up stats to prove anything. 64% of the population knows that.

And Shaq Fu you while we’re at it!

In other news, I finally started Burnout Paradise Remastered last night. I never played it on the 360, I’m loving it and the incredibly 2008 soundtrack too.

Quantic Dream is becoming a multiplatform studio. Pretty big news. They finally made a half-decent game too, hopefully that's the bar they stick to. They had an investment from NetEase, who also invested in Bungie and are making the Diablo mobile game everyone is so excited for.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-01-29-heavy-rain-studio-quantic-dream-no-longer-making-playstation-exclusives
Cool news. I actually liked their first game, Heavy Rain, the best TBH.

I had the same problem when I started playing it after I got my X at launch. I had to wait for my girlfriend's S to arrive so we could play together. They apparently expect people to play in groups. I'd never be able to solo the story. Those boss enemies have a shit ton of health. We still died a lot. We still need to finish it.
You dramatically overestimate me, I mean I died in every mission in the tutorial section, the first 3 optional objectives.

Finally made a half-decent game?? Heavy Rain was amazing!
I've dug both of the games I played of theirs (Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain). Shamefully, I've owned Detroit: Become Human for a while and not played it. I also liked Until Dawn, which wasn't theirs but was very Quantic Dream-y, so I'm hyped to hear this.

Almost bought rogue remastered also.
Anyone know how different remastered would be compared to the 360 version of a x1x? (I’m sure there is a comparison video out there on YouTube..)
Another comparison for Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered since it got buried in the "discussion." It's a little more than your average vanilla "port":

4k resolution, further draw distances, enhanced lighting/shadows/smoke/reflections, better textures, more npcs on screen, better ocean waves...

I prefer the upgrades

The same is being applied to the Assassin's Creed III Remaster along with HDR support. This is likely why Odyssey's season pass hasn't dropped yet since you get III for free.

I need Rogue Remastered and like everyone just waiting for ACIII. I really hope they remaster the first one as well. Then I'll have everything in HD.

While I’m happy to have Rogue to add to my backlog, my expectations for actually getting around to playing are relatively low. So I’ll just take the freebie over the remaster. :)

I've had it installed on PC since it came out I think? Like maybe a sale on steam a month or so after release. I have played a couple hours in total. I had it on PS3 too.

Still very happy to get it on Xbox 1X as I am more apt to try it more on there

I’ve heard some good things about Rogue Remastered and what upgrades it got but I don’t think it should be lumped in the same conversation as AC3. While they got some similar treatment, AC3 was an older game with more to benefit from upgrades than Rogue which came out as a 360 exclusive instead of being on the One as well. I haven’t seen the menus for Rogue, but if I remember correctly the AC3 that comes with the Odyssey pass had its menu and interface updated. I love the Assassins Creed but I have a hard time shelling out $20 for a upgraded version of a 360 game I can get for free next month.
