Through the console, after first selecting to download a GoD you are greeted by a familiar gray confirmation screen that pops up displaying the size of the download as well as confirming the price. At the bottom of this gray pop-up is the instruction to press the "X button" in order to change the payment type to MSP. Pictured below with an arrow:
I'm in the same boat as you. I like to experience all a game has to offer.

To be honest, lots of games already have challenge systems built into them so I don't think those need to be converted into achievements. Think of the daily/weekly/monthly challenges in Halo 4 or the N7 system in Mass Effect 3. I like the way those work. Why rock the boat?

What's interesting is a lot of achievement hunters I know hold onto their games and have huge collections. It's people who don't care about achievements that tend to trade in games quickly to get newer games so in my opinion it's not going to change the used game market much if that's what they think. Achievement hunters expect more achievements to be added later. It's called DLC.

Anyways, I think it's best to wait for official word from Microsoft than get worked up over speculation so I'll leave it there.
I agree with this. As an achievement person I do keep most of my games. Mainly only the ones I enjoy like Bioshock, FEAR, Mass Effect, Halo, etc.

I dont understand why there is so much talk about achievements though. Not to sound like a douche but, aside from a few people, most are under 40K. So what does it matter? I think they are here to stay whether for good or bad.

On the flip side, I've played a few games for easy achievements that ended up just a lot of fun. There's a good line between how developers implement it that should be maintained though.

For example, L.A. Noire was my 2011 GOTY. I adored the game. I went back for achievements and my second playthrough was not nearly as enjoyable.

Other games like Trails make me push myself to get those achievements, and I like them. It's almost the same euphoria as you get when you get the high school at an arcade.

I can see why people don't like them. Personally, I don't bend backwards to complete every single game. Unless it's really easy, I'll complete it only if I truly enjoy the game/franchise. Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row the Third, Limbo. All games I love. I did the same back in the day. I would get all the trophies I could in Smash Bros. or get my 100% in Burnout 3: Takedown. The difference is now we get visual representation for it, and it's cool.
(some games aren't finished when you got all achievements, so I still play to the end)
Yes, same here. If the game has something more to offer, it doesn't end just with unlocking all the achievements.

I agree with Sconson. I think the biggest factor for me is time. You used to be able to watch movies repeatedly because they were 60-90 minutes long. Now movies are 2+ hours. It's why I never really got into RPGs too much as a kid.

I like to sit down, play for a bit and then resume my life. Not have to tear myself away from an alternate reality. The majority of games I play on xbox are the arcade games because I can usually only find a few minutes here and there.

I've been trying to finish LA Noire for several months now. I get maybe an hour or two at night once or twice a week. I'm only on the 2nd disc.

I didn't expect my short mention of Alan Wake to spark any discussion, since most of my brief mentions of what I've been playing don't. So for a fleeting moment, I felt like I mattered ;P The dynamics of thread discussion and development definitely pique my curiosity - it's odd but somehow pleasant that a topic almost completely between FriskyTanuki and I roped in several more commentators once simmias spiced things up with rumors, which immediately brought to mind Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation.

To reiterate and revise something I said several posts back: The completionist in me is perturbed by the thought of achievements rotating with time or whatever the hell the concept is, but the pure gamer in me is intrigued, perhaps excited. I am a completionist and OCD freak though, but only to an extent, especially these days. The Donkey Kong Country series is one of my favorites of all time, and I could not let them be until I had discovered every single thing. (Side note: Do the odd percentages like 103% complete annoy anyone else?) And every single time I play through a Diablo game, I have to slay every monster, open every chest, and otherwise do all exploration possible to be the most badass demon stomper. As long as a game's actually fun, this same obsession carries over to achievements, but within the constraints of my available time and interest. Achievements like "play a thousand online matches" or "get 100,000 kills online" will always have to pucker up and plant a big kiss on my ass, because ain't nobody got time for that!

I'm not as obsessed with achievements as my talk might lead you to believe though. I've only got 100% on... drum roll, please... Deathspank and Costume Quest.

I do have to admit that before achievements, I only played a very small number of games on the harder difficutlies...and of those, Halo series is all the jumps to my mind right now. Since the 360 came out, i've played many games on hard for the achievement.
 my 100% are even worse: The Walking Dead, PacMan CE DX, and....Harms Way:booty:
For me, achievements are kind of a take em or leave em approach. I've had a 360 since 2008 and the only game I have all achievements for is Mass Effect 2. Even some of my other favorite games (Mass Effect 1, Halo, Skyrim, Batman AA/AC) I dont have 100% acheivements for and probably wont get them anytime soon. I play a game if its fun, not for the cheevos.

I only have a 360 for about a year and a half and so, and in that time I've completed about 30+ games. For me achievements are an excuse to keep playing a game you like, even when you already have beaten it.

edit: that said, there are a ton of achievements that I just won't do. Specially beating all stages with grade S in a difficult game I don't like too much or online related ones.
You're preachin' to the choir. It gets worse every year man.
Yup, wait till you have kids.

The only game I grinded for cheese mints was Fight Night Round 3.
Found it hilarious that you could win fights by using cheap shots, so I spent a day or two kneeing every boxer in the nuts until I won all the belts.

You shouldn't need an excuse to revisit or keep playing a game you like because, ya know, you like it.

You must have turned ref attentiveness way down because Headbutts McKinney is 0-14 in Fight Night Champion.

Or maybe they fixed that in Champion.

Still, the ref is crying about obviously fair shots. Totally paid off

Trying Serious Sam for the first time. What's that? A game that's like Duke Nukem Forever but is actually good?? Sign me up.

As far as achievements go, they don't matter to me much. If I play through a game normally and I unlock one, I think "that's neat" or laugh at the title of it and move on with game play. I care more about the game itself.

What do you mean crashed?!? Was it an official Microsoft hard drive or one of those Chinese ebay ones?

My 250gb HD crashed today, hundreds of game saves gone poof!
Ouch - that's horrendous. I ever so glad now that I actually spent about an hour or two this weekend transferring all my save files to the cloud, only wish there was more than just 512mb of space. Mine came more out of a need to clear space on my HD as I realized my 300+ saves in Fallout 3 were taking up close to a gig on my 60gb HD.

But yeah I so feel you pain man. I had trouble even deleting saves of games I've completed and know that I will never return to. God knows why. Perhaps I have a save-hoarding habit. Course I've discovered that there are a few games like Super Meat Boy that don't work with the cloud for some reason, I find that a bit odd as you'd think that each game would have to be integrated with it. But yeah guess we should all be backing these things up more often.

On the topic of achievements I kind of gave up on them as when I moved to Australia I didn't have internet for a good while but still played my xbox (I was living in a holiday rental). So I let my nephews here use my Xbox account so they could play Halo online through my gold account. I spent like 7 months gaming and didn't realize that when I hooked up my Xbox to the internet none of the achievements I earned would get recognized. So now I'd have to go back to the start of a game to earn certain progress achievements and I'm just not in the mood to do that. Sometimes these glitches in the system change your behaviour.

Yes, you are right, but I have a lot of games, so I prefer playing new ones once I finish one, to ease the backlog, instead of being always with the same game. Though from time to time I replay the games I like the most, of course.

It was the original that came with the slim. The past week I'd been gettin more game freezes. Now it boots to dash and then freezes when I try to do anything that Would access the HD, even trying to go to storage options. Word to the wise to back up your important saves! The only cloud backup I ever did was skyrim, and now I'm tired of that game finally...

It's just a sata port on slim drives right? Going to try plugging into computer if possible. It's def rotten, but I can at least look at my game collection before it locks up so maybe there's enough life left to grab saves.

Edit: thanks for the condolences, I'm trying to not think about it too much it's just video games right ! (crying inside).

I'm sorry with you man, I also lost all my game saves, but it was my fault for messing with my profile (never delete your profile WITH complements- or something like that)

I should have learnt and do backups, but I don't  It was awful mostly for the online part of some games and extras unlocked in other ones.

I had my HDD crash at the end of 2011 JUST before the cloud saving was launched. I luckily was able to access it just a bit so I could transfer saves to the cloud; only lost a few game saves. That was the official HDD. I tried a few cheap knock-of HDD and they all failed me in about a week's time. If you're going to get an HDD, shell out and get an official one.

Ive looked a bit online, but what prog did you use to access it on your comp?

Also get a new one not used! They clearly have a shelf life so dont get a used on at GS. Side note-none of the GS near me have the newer version that comes with NFS and Ms splosion. They all had the older package w star wars.

Was there a specific game you were playing when the problems started happening?

Thanks for the info so far. If my Xbox ever shows signs like that I'm definitely going to take it to the doctor (aka new hard drive) lol...

My exact stance. Achievements strived me to play on harder difficulties, which I wouldn't have done in my past. I would just play on normal/default so I could see the story/beat the game sooner.

Most polished yes but IMO also the worst in terms of the game play itself.

Same here. Before achievements I never played a single game on hard difficulty or played a game more than once. After achievements I have played plenty of hard difficulties and played games sometimes 4 or 5 times over. There are some downsides to achievements IMO but they have greatly increased the value of most games for me.
I may be crazy, but I'm going to make an on topic post:

The Forza 4 DLC is NOT a price drop, rather it's on sale to encourage people to participate in the ALMS challenge currently going on. Said DLC pack is required to participate. Although the sale was just announced in the forums and via twitter, no end date was announced. My guess would be that the sale lasts for most or all of the challenge, but I don't know how long it lasts as I've ignored it since I don't have the DLC...
Thanks, I'll update the OP if it hasn't already been done.

I've been off the grid for the last 24 hours or so, but I'll just chime in that I like achievements (and the idea of continuously adding new ones, thought I don't particularly like that they would consider taking them down) and I like Alan Wake.

I tried the demo of Home Run Stars. Is swinging the bat all you can do in this game? If you were able to pitch or do more events, I must've missed that. Without much effort I was able to do perfect hits most of the time, so it seems like there's too little there to be worth 320 points or really worth paying anything at all. I got bored in 10 minutes... about 5 of which was navigating the Kinect menus.

1-2 years ago I tried to make backups of some saves on my HD, and I couldn't find any copy option... just the option to move to a different HD or flash drive. Does the dashboard allow us to make actual backups (copies) these days or is it still just moving? To me doing a backup means copying... not moving. If you copy to the cloud save (for those with Gold), do you still keep a local copy on your HD too? If you lose your Gold I assume your cloud data gets deleted?

You can copy most files (not just move them) to another storage device or the cloud. I dont ever recall there being a time when you couldn't. However there are certain games, it mainly seems to be MS owned ones like Fable and Viva Pinata that cannot be copied and moving is the only option. This may be why you recall being unable to copy.

I believe if you drop gold your cloud just becomes inaccessible until you resub, but I'm not 100% on that. Anything else seems illogical. Regardless, it would be duplicates and not your sole saves.

I believe that there's integration with Xbox Smartglass on this title so if you have a 2nd player with a smartphone they can download the Smartglass app and use it to pitch to you. I haven't used this option but I remember them advertising it so I can't say if it's any fun or even if it works but it is an option. Except I think it's just in a 2 player setting. Ultimately I don't know if doing so actually makes the game any more fun or switches up the challenge, as I don't know if it would be any different from the AI. But it is something to keep in mind if you do play games with others. I do like the idea of co-oping a kinect game where one of the players can chill on the couch but still play the game. Sorry I can't help you with more on that.

I can't say for sure what happens. But my guess is that whatever is on your harddrive remains it will just no longer sync up to the cloud. Perhaps I'm wrong on that but that seems the most logical thing to me as to design a system where your saves get deleted or locked from use due to a stoppage in a subscription service seems like a rather asinine way to engineer a system. In saying that, it wouldn't surprise me if that's the way it is, but I'm more than sure that wouldn't be the case as basically Microsoft would be holding your saves for ransom if your subscription did lapse and that seems very very very wrong. I'd storm the castle if that was the case. But considering it actually takes up 512mb on your drive, I can't imagine they could or would lock you out of data that is on your drive.

The same thing happened with a stock first-party 250GB hard drive with me about a year ago. It crushed me and I lost about 3 years of game saves, despite my endless attempts to connect it to my PC and talk with MS support.

The most difficult to swallow were big time investments like Mass Effect 3 or Red Dead Redemption, but it was tough to lose each and every one.

I found it actually has affected my gaming decisions as I simply don't have the time or patience to make up the progress in most games so I can't go back and complete games I otherwise would have.

I'm so grateful for cloud services on both consoles going forward so it can never happen again but nothing can ever replace those priceless saves. I'm so paranoid now that I also leave a micro flash drive in one of the USB ports at all times and just periodically copy my saves over to it, even with cloud enabled as well.

I've had issues recently with games from my hard drive, so mine might be going soon too. Fortunately, my saves are on my flash drive, but I'd still be annoyed if my hard drive did crash. That definitely wouldn't help my interest in another Xbox system if my 360S models hard drive died when it was a replacement for an old 360 that would have been prone to the Red Lights of Death, which was a replacement for a system that did get the Red Lights of Death.

You get to pitch if you play in duel mode. It's pretty rudimentary though. All you control is the type of pitch and the speed.
The game is pretty bare-bone when it comes to different modes. You could do worse at 320 MSPs. However, it won't be a game that you'll likely play very much after you beat all the computer opponents.

There's nothing about a m$ HDD that makes it anything but a HDD. HDDs are warrantied for 3-5 years, because that is when they start failing. I don't trust m$ to not be such cheap bastards that they would put refurbished HDDs in theirs, which is probably why they only warranty the things for a year. m$ is also too crazy about piracy, so they make it a huge pain to backup your saves and data, and the only real option available is to buy a transfer cable and move everything to a new HDD.

You can make fun of it all you want, but I think you're way better off buying a new Scorpio Blue drive with a 3 year warranty, and putting that in a $2 eBay case. Even an OEM drive gives you two years. Won't protect your data, but at least when it fails you can reformat it and send it in for a replacement that'll last a year or two longer.

*Edit* Take it from someone who's lost their entire mp3/avi collections multiple times cause they didn't learn the first time that when you have a HDD that's 3 years old, you should be looking at replacing it regardless of any "warning signs." My last HDD that failed never had scandisk popping up on it detecting bad clusters, or SMART noticing anything. Just one day, poof - wouldn't detect that it was even there, even in BIOS.

Connect your HDD to PC and use Xplorer360.

I've been making monthly backups since 2005 with this program.

And I've been able to restore just fine when I've needed to.

How big is your HDD?

I think the latest version of Xplorer360 only goes up to 250 GB.

There is also Xport 360, but I never had much luck with that program.

the dead (dying) drive is a 250gb. so im installing parallels on my mac so i can try this out and save my nerd legacy. With xplorer360-can I (provided the drive isnt fried) pull game saves, and stick them on a usb (and then back onto new xbox HDD)?

FYI: All of the folders and files are hexadecimal. There used to be a list online of what is what but a Google search did not help me.

I only mention this because it sounds like you just want the saves. If you can't find a list, I would recommend just exporting the .iso from the old drive. It's a lot quicker than downloading all of your games again.

Thanks for all the help. I'll update in a week if it worked or not.
On the plus side, my progress from battle block theatre carried over so it must be stored online. So I've got one!

Does anyone have experience with license transfers?

I can't play Double Dragon or Test Drive Unlimited and I read on the Xbox forums that a license transfer might fix it.

If I do a license transfer, do I have to worry about losing anything? I'll do a backup first; I just want to make sure it won't be a mess.
My official one lasted a few weeks past the 12 month warranty... $50 knock off 320gb is approaching 2 years. knocking on wood...

No worries. This has probably been some of the most useful and intelligent conversations had in this thread, haha. So thanks for that and thanks to everyone for providing insight and information about hard drives and stuff.

Don't worry, you won't lose a thing. But be sure that you'll transfer to a console you will own for at least 6 months (as If I remember correctly, you won't be able to do another transfer until that time has passed).
