Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
[*]ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...

Do you mean you are only a first person shooter gamer? Cause Japanese games have a wide variety other than First Person Shooter.

Have zero interest in Japanese games. Zero.
This.

Most of the times I'll check out Japanese games that are getting hyped to infinity like Nier or Persona on YouTube and ask myself how people enjoy it. Hell, I can't even stand playing traditional JRPGs because of the turn-based combat but I'm trying to overcome that with some games.

I realize people have different tastes in gaming but some people act like having less Japanese games on the console is a deal breaker.

I don't usually like japanese games' artstyle. Zelda? I got the Switch for that after I loved the 3DS games, and I'm loving it. I got the RE bundle on sale and want to play through all of them. I can't wait until they bring the latest Phoenix Wright game to the Switch since I skipped the latest 3DS one. Persona? Yakuza? Final Fantasy? No way I'd touch that.

^ Jesus, do you know what partial means. Yeah I've played and enjoyed Vanquish, Lost Planet & Bayonetta - hell even Binary Domain wasn't bad - but overall I'm not a fan of Japanese development - they tend to rely on a proven formula for all too long and it apparently works for their region.

I can see people not liking things like Persona based on a distaste for Japansese games. But Nier Automata? It's a brilliant game and if you liked any game like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, I don't know why you wouldn't like it. The combat is incredibly fun.

Honestly, I like it more than Horizon Zero Dawn.

I've strongly favored Microsoft consoles on the whole since the original Xbox. I even usually get cross platform games on Xbox.

But this is the first year, I can say I'm playing my PS4 more due to Nioh, Nier and HDZ.

I can't make generalizations about Japanese vs American developed games but I do tend to favor games that have a good 30 second gameplay loop like Halo has.

At this point it's not so much "less", as it is maybe five percent of the competition.

All(?) announced upcoming Japanese games on Xbox One through 2018:

Kingdom Hearts 3, Valkyria Revolution, Tekken 7, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Sonic Forces, whatever else Capcom ports.

Edit: Forgot MvC: Infinite. Subject matter is pretty western but it's being developed by Capcom. Left Sonic Mania off because it's a western team.

I've wrestled with getting a :ps4: for a while and I think I have the rules figured out.  I'll only get it when a critical mass of single player exclusive games come out that I want to play because I'm not interested in paying for another premium membership (I am fine with missing out on the PS+ games).  There are already a handful that I'd like to get (HZD, FFX12Z, and any DQ game that isn't on :3ds: ), but I won't pull the trigger on anything like that until I see more details about Project Scorpio.

^^ I will say that I'm seriously considering dropping PS+ on my PS4. I don't play multiplayer on it and the games on Plus are pretty much crap. GwG isn't much better but I do play MP on X1.

Having two subscriptions is pretty stupid. There's even a lot of duplication in the freebies.

I like the games on xbox.

But as far as consoles go, I prefer to game on ps4, because I have all of the same games available to xbox, and then some.

I mean, really - you can't fathom why someone would fault the xbox for having less than the competition?

I may eventually get a PS4, but just for a list of exclusives (much like I did a PS3 - which never got played again after Uncharted 1 and 2 and the InFamous games). The bonus from the X1 are the apps - I don't have to turn on a cable box to see any of my movies or just about any sports channel - and that's not even mentioning GwG (which has games that I'm marginally more interested in than the weak PS+ games most months) and BC...

I just can't consider "our exclusives in 2017 means we're the best console EVER" seriously when 80% of them are weird assed "Shin Mega Tsunami Pro Raiden VII" or some 8-bit RPG game. I played through the 8 bit era for real - I don't have any desire to go back to that.

Well, I certainly wouldn't say PS4 is the "best console ever" but even looking at it as someone who prefers X1, Nier, Nioh, Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5 are some damn good exclusives that probably will be considered among the best of the year.

That may boil down to taste but still....

We had the JRPGs on the 360 and they sucked. I don't miss those games not being released on the Xbox One. They are 10 years behind the curve.

And the best thing about the console is the controller. With the exception of the Dreamcast/Duke, it was a steady improvement of the best controller of the given generation from the Sega Genesis, to the Sega Saturn, to the Controller S, to the Xbox 360, to the Xbox One.

Lost Odyssey sucked? It's one of my favorite JRPGs of all time.

And there's a lot more to Japanese games than just JRPGs.

Do agree about the controllers. Much prefer X1's to the PS4.

I don't enjoy Japanese gaming as much as I've used to like 20 years ago. I I still find games I can enjoy but it's a far cry from how the vast majority of my favorite Arcade, NES, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PSX, etc games are overwhelmingly Japanese.

Like Persona 1 and the 2 Persona 2 games are some of my favorite videogames ever, but I just can't stomach the shit fest that was Persona 3 and 4. I've beaten Devil May Cry 1-3 on Dante Must Die mode and I can honestly say they are barely mediocre games and have no interest in the series anymore and Bayonetta just bored me to tears and I've been trying to finish it since 2010. That's about Platnium games in a nutshell for me. Street Fighter V (the game that made me buy a PS4 last year) turned out to be a steaming pile of shit with Street Fighter X Tekken and especially Marvel vs Capcom 3 being among the worst games the company ever put out.  2D shooters are almost all fucking pedo bait with underage girls in exotic clothing, and Arc System's Double Dragon 4 is one of the laziest sequels in history.

On the flip side, I've been playing Stranger of Sword City, which has a huge japanese vibe to it and I love it. King of Fighters 14 is a great game when I find someone to play it with (online play is terrible and I don't like subbing to PS+ anyway) and Yakuza 0 is great from what little I've played.

persona 5 is not a ps4 exclusive, Ill be grabbing it on ps3

I worked all summer in a scorching field full of creatures as a kid to be able to buy a ps2 after seeing a friend play devil may cry

so I guess they have that going for them

I have a PS4 and it goes months without being turned on. I've had every PlayStation 1-4 but now it only gets used when an exclusive comes out, basically only The Show, God of War series, Killzone and Uncharted series. I'm just not interested in the Japanese games either and it seems like lately that's all the exclusives PlayStation has come out with.

I can't even lie, I'm gonna get a Pro when God Of War, TLOU 2, and the Spidey game are all out. BTW I still have high amounts of sodium in my system from learning Spidey was exclusive. I hope the game sucks ass just off GP but I know it'll be awesome, goddam you Sony.

Holy shit this thread is making my head hurt.
Would you rather talk about sandwiches?

I think this is a healthy conversation. Even if I seem to be the only one who likes some of the Sony exclusives and Japanese games, at least it hasn't gotten too ugly.

Not a Sony fanboy by any means.

How many people blocked me for my insane comments? ;)

I would welcome more Japanese games because I'd buy the ones I want and ignore the ones I don't care about. Same as I've always done with games from every country for every system I've owned. The cream rises to the top.

Haven't owned a PS3 or 4 but was interested in a few games here and there but not always the big name exclusives. I was always intrigued by Valkyria Chronicles and did end up buying it on sale from Steam but it has remained in the backlog. If that FF7 remake is long term exclusive then I might have to borrow a console like I did for the original before my brother and I saved up to get one.  I'd also like someone to tell Nintendo to stop making consoles so I could get some of their games without paying the entry fii. (now switch, I know)

I agree with your points on PS4. I beat Horizon, and thought it was fantastic, the only other game I'm likely to beat this month is Uncharted 4. Would love to play Nioh, and Nier Automata as they both look great, but I just can't pull the trigger on either. The Sony exclusives so far this year are much better than X1, but I still prefer to X1 ecosystem and most importantly my Elite controller (cause I'm a pro gamer)

I pre-ordered the PS4 at the same time I pre-ordered my Xbox One.  I 'upgraded' to the 'Pro' and eagerly await 'Scorpio.'

I want Microsoft to succeed for a variety of reasons: I have been an Xbox Live subscriber since 2003, my friends are on Xbox, I really hope the Play Anywhere initiative catches on, state pride, and I just flat-out prefer the Xbox One Elite controller to literally anything else.

Its very frustrating to me, but I've come to realize the decline of the Xbox brand in the west is the best thing that could've happened for Japanese developers.  The better the PS4 does in the west, the easier their business decisions get.  Now - rather than trying to create an Xbox port out west - Japanese developers don't need to care about going multi-platform; they just have to worry about localization.  And people like me are a part of the problem.  I bought Yakuza 0 at launch because I really wanted to try the franchise.  In my case, no sale was lost to Sega by not being on Xbox.

I recently discovered the Brook Xbox One to PlayStation 4 Super Converter.  I had to do a firmware update out of the box, but since then I literally just plug my Xbox One controller into the converter via USB-to-MicroUSB cable and suddenly my Xbox One Elite controller is a PS4 controller.  The converter even maps the PS4's Touchpad to the 'Back' button on the XB1 controller - right where it should be.  Now - being able to play Yakuza 0 with "Boost Mode" on my 'Pro' and using an Xbox controller I'm wondering....do I really even care anymore about these games not coming to Xbox?

Of course I want all third-party games on Xbox.  Of course I care; its my favorite console and ecosystem.  But I fear this trend of Japanese-made games skipping Xbox is only going to get worse.  Maybe Phil can pass the money hat to Japan and offer them something truly compelling: a chance to be on PC (via UWP and the Windows 10 Store).

360 had some solid JRPGs and even had some solid exclusives (blue dragon, takes of vesperia and Lost Odyssey) 360 was the console of choice for shmups. I am amazed the new Valkyria game is coming to Xbox One and am pre ordering it.

The thing is Japanese games aren't all very Japanese. There is a weird niche where NIS and XSEED throw out overly Japanese games, but if you say 'I don't like Japanese games' you are lumping in games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, all of Nintendo and most of SEGA. Final Fantasy, etc. I get the not liking the overly Japanese games, the only ones I can get into are the Persona series.. but it's very hard to believe that people can't find something to like in one of the most diverse markets. A lot of games coming out of Japan.

Don't have an Elite controller but I also prefer the X1 ecosystem and even standard controller, which is why I buy almost all multi platform games on the One.

In all honestly, I hope Scorpio blows Sony out of the water. Not because I hate Sony but want MS to get back the momentum for the very reason that I like their products.

There are always exceptions lol.

OK. in lieu of the current subject of conversation, I'd like to state that I also do not like nor care about most Japanese games either. Even if they're not "overly Japanese". I do enjoy Resident Evil though.

But, why is it so hard for people that DO like them and enjoy to understand that some us are really NOT into them? I had this conversation with a friend of mine who lives and dies by every single game made in Japan (quirky, obscure or otherwise). He can't grasp my lack of interest in Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, BlazBlue, Nioh, etc, etc and assumes there's something wrong with me.

They're just not my cup of tea and I won't invest any money in them. So if they ever come to XB1, then so be it. But if they keep skipping it in favor of the PS4, I won't lose any sleep over it. Enjoy. Live free and game hard  :D/

Anyone else watch Into the Badlands? Watching season 1 right now, if you're into Kung Fu films it's really good through 5 episodes so far

I'm sure it has to do with what you liked as a kid. I would bet that people whom love weird Japanese games watched anime as a kid. Kind of like how Shipwreck and Wombat read comics so they watch all the super hero shows. I didn't read comics or watch anime as a kid so it's harder for me to care about some of the superhero games/movies or Japanese games because I'm not as invested in that market.

I do love some Japanese games and some superhero movies though, but the more obscure stuff just isn't for me.

It's fun to play games with characters your familiar with so I totally get it. I love me some Simpsons games even though most are terrible as stand alone games.

I'm so rich I own both an XBox One AND a PS4 so I don't need to hope one console game comes out on the other console. SO RICH!

Got my Elite today. Never have a felt a controller feel so solid and crisp with each button press. I love the weight to it and to able to switch the triggers into hair triggers is top. The rubber grip around the controller helps hold and add comfort. It's going to be awhile before I'm use to the paddles, they feel right when I have my fingers resting but I see it being easy to press if you're not paying attention. If you don't have one get one if you have the money! :D/

Put 20 hours into Far Cry:primal over the last few weeks since the sale. Glad I bought it. I really enjoyed playing through the story. Not gonna grind out the last 250 cheevos, but I'm happy with 750 and the hours in the game.

I almost bought it on PSN the other day. Sort of regret (ok not really) passing on it. Will probably wait till BF sales and get it on disc for $10. Play and trade it. Can't see it having much replay value to me.

I got a PS4 at launch. Last gen I had a PS3 first but ended up gaming a lot more on my 360. I hated the crap MS was trying to pull with DRM and Kinect. Yes I know they backed off the DRM stuff before launch. Just left a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure why they thought they could charge $100 more for their console and force the Kinect on gamers. My second 360 was a bundle that came with the Kinect. Put that on Ebay without even hooking it up. No desire for that.

So for 2+ years I stopped gaming on Microsoft consoles. Was very happy with my PS4. But knew I would likely buy a XBox One when Gears came out. Ended up picking one up March last year. Spent most of the last year gaming mostly on XBox One. Cheap credit and back log of exclusives I missed out on over the 2+ years.

Both consoles have their pluses and minuses. I will say I like the XBox One controller better then the DS4. It just feels more solid and a bit less gimmicky. Outside a few games I never really use the touch pad. Light bar is kind of cool in a few games. Rest not used and just a battery drain. The speaker in the controller was cool at first but much of the time I was wearing Golds and couldn't hear anyway.

Crappy DS4 build quality on my first couple of controllers soured me a bit but honestly the XBox One controller just feels better to me. Battery life is much better. Also I like the dashboard better on XBox one. Not sure why still get lost more then I do on my PS4. The PS4 dashboard just doesn't look very good IMO. Beyond stupid trophies just don't sync on PS4. I like the remote play and use that with a Playstation TV for some games (mostly TWD and a few other Telltale games).

Most of these Japanese exclusives I don't care at all about. Much of the time I assume they are some JRPG which I have no desire or time for.

I will check out Horizon Zero Dawn though at some point. This year I will probably end up playing both pretty equally as I have gotten through a good chunk (but not all) of the XBox one exclusives I want to play.

Man I remember seeing the KFC version of this gif ages ago. I also love Japanese games...and games in general. It's why I own Pro, One S, and a Switch.

It probably does help but it's going to be harder to judge now. I was playing "Japanese" Japanese games a few years before I became familiar with anime, as were many people who played the PS1 and especially PS2 when they were current. Keep in mind just how big of a powerhouse JRPGs were during that era, which is one of the reasons many people feel the genre has stagnated now, as this had the chunk of games most people are familiar with. Toonami only really started to get a foothold in 2001, and anime had it's real boom between 2004-2008.

Now anime is relatively mainstream, but games are even more so.

I HATE turn-based combat in games.  Hearing a lot of you talk about them, though, it seems that a lot of them have good stories.

Can anyone recommend a game that might ease me in a little?
