XBLA - Bungie's Marathon: Durandal - 8/1 @ 800pts

Happy Panda,

Rereading your post up there, I think I misread it the first time. When I read your post, I was thinking you meant to be released at the same time as Halo, I was thinking it would have to be released before it. Now, I see that we were probably thinking along the same lines.

Ah. Gotcha. But I do completely agree with you, NO game should come out in the two weeks before or the two weeks after Halo 3 comes out. The only exception to that rule, is Marathon, IF it comes out two weeks before. If it comes out after, no one will even notice besides the hardcore.

Update 7/30: Coming out this Wednesday
This week, we have two anticipated titles coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade, Marathon Durandal, and Spyglass Board Games. Both will come to Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360 this Wednesday, August 1, beginning at 9:00 a.m. GMT (2:00 a.m. Pacific).
Marathon: Durandal
ESRB Rating M (Mature)
800 Microsoft Points
Available Worldwide

Also Spyglass Board games coming out 400pts...Please discuss Marathon only in this thread.

800 points, huh? Still tempting given the improvements made on it, even if it available for free on the PC. I may wait a day or two to see what people think of it.

IGN Reviews it at 7.4

For those looking to take the game beyond the campaign, there's a lot to enjoy. You can play four-player splitscreen or eight-player System Link or online. The multiplayer modes are the original versions of some Halo classics. Along with Deathmatch and co-op, gamers can tackle King of the Hill, Kill the Man with the Ball, and Tag. There are more than a dozen maps as well. While the multiplayer isn't going to be exciting enough to keep Marathon running on your 360 once Halo 3 arrives in late September, it should provide a nice warm-up during a relatively shooter-free August.

I like Marathon: Durandal a lot. In fact, I think it's quite a bit better than DOOM in almost all aspects. But it's impossible to ignore the fact that everyone who has played Marathon has gotten nauseous. I've never seen this happen with a game before, but obviously anything that leaves people feeling worse than when they booted it up, can't get a very enthusiastic thumbs up.
If you have the stomach for it (download the demo to test out your sea legs), then by all means, scoop up Marathon. It's a long, enjoyable campaign with strong multiplayer as an added bonus.

The thing that worries me is the fact that it made people naseous. I've gotten that feeling when I tried out Prey, it was a good game but I couldn't handle it. I tried The Darkness demo and I got the same feeling. Glad there's demo's for all XBLA games. I am looking forward to this one.

The thing about Marathon is that it may not stand the test of time when compared to modern FPS; nevertheless, it has the deepest story of any FPS I've played (Halo included), it's a classic for me (admittedly, we *did* but it because it was one of the few Mac games; what of it? ;)), and it is still fun.

It's much more intellectual than Doom, and I don't think it's a fair comparison.

I watched a few of the preview vids on IGN, and I'm not noticing any music--- was there none on the MAC version? Game looks like a good romp, but if it doesn't have any kicking tunes (ala Doom) that makes me a little sad.

I got that feeling too during Prey. I was mostly fine with The Darkness though. Seeing that people got nauseous with Marathon, I'm probably not going to get into it.

No kidding. That story's cerebral and a half. I keep waiting for Halo to get there ... and waiting, and waiting ... Still, am I insane or did I hear that there are terminals in Halo 3?

Anyone going to be up when this drops at 5 AM EST? I'll probably end up being awake and would love to play with some CAGs. Hit me up if you're down.

Got the board games overall they're very well done. But the copyright date on them is 2006...

Played 3 games of chess first two games I won, then the third I lost in under two minutes. :)

Picked this up and played for the last half hour.

Seems pretty good so far. Graphics are hard to get used to at first but seem solid. Online multi-player ran well and features a good system from what I played so far.

Single-Player seems like it's gonna be difficult to figure out what to do at times (considering I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to do on the first level).

edit: my only real gripe so far is that the weapons are look lame and are also non-powerful looking.

Has anyone come across the viral achievement yet?

If so, I'd like it.

The size of the game took me back a little this morning, but I guess considering all the upgrading done...its not completely unexpected.

I got it too, but multiplayer is sorta laggy(though it might have been the players I was with). Single player is hard, but that's probably why they put in co-op.;)

It feels like doom, but modded for vertical look. I do got some gameplay gripes, but those are no big deal(why can you dual wield shotguns, but not machine guns?).
There aren't many people on the multiplayer(course it's been out for three hours, lol).
Oh yeah, and when they said the game was "floaty" in OXM, they were talking about how you seem to fly when you walk off a ledge. I think that's there for jumping.
Anyway, the game is definitely worth it for ten bucks.

Just played it a bit, and I have to say that my first impression is... confusion.

I like it, though. The graphics look pretty nice in HD.

You are correct. Bungie has never come out and said it, but the Halo series and Marathon series are very much linked.

It's because of the jerky movements and unsmooth transitions, as well as the floaty feeling of the character's movement.

I'm suprised they didn't fix that for the XBLA version.

Game is pretty cool, moving left or right seems kinda fast and does make me a little naseous, though I was half asleep when I tried it. I'll give it another shot tonight.

Damn stupid CC and their still sold out points cards. I'm supposed to call them back this afternoon and see if their truck brought them more cards.

Anyhow, if they do, I'm up for giving it a shot. I've been replaying Oblivion on my shiny new TV (finally high def!) but I could take a break from it for a little while.

yep, pretty archaic. kinda cool, but not 800 points cool. but as i said, I don't have any nostalgia for the game.

Played through the trial and felt a little slow for me. I guess in this new age of quick shoot'em ups, I kinda felt like this one got left behind. I'm just glad that Live has demos so we can try before we buy.

I tried it myself a few beers in after a long day at work. I'm not really sure what to think--- It moves very fast, which is good, but the corridors (at least on the demo) are so tight, I'm missing jumps and points left and right. Much like Brak I think I'm confused more than anything else. I'll give it another go round, due to all the fond memories other board members seem to have.

After you have placed the two computer chips, go back to the first terminal you visited. You'll be teleported out.

The solution to the first level is pretty random. It wasn't until I hit random terminals that I got it-- are they all like that?

You always leave a level using a Terminal. So it always a good idea to keep going back if your in doubt.

Im on the fence about this game, but I might as well purchase it.. maybe get a CAG game going later on tonight or something?

I downloaded the trial and I'll probably skip this one. It looks nice (surprisingly the textures are nice) and it controls well. The level I played was very boring though, and it was just another Doom clone IMO. Maybe the full version is better, but the demo level was very bland. I'll pass.

I bought the game outright so I never saw what the demo level was. Anyone know which level it was? Is it the first one? If it is, that is a *yawn* level.

Well, the multiplayer is a heck of a lot better than Doom for 1 thing. 4 players on a console can join online games, ala Halo 2 & 3. 8 player coop is neat! Plus there are a variety of versus gametypes too.

With that said, even in split-screen it gave me motion sickness. No other game has done that...

People don't know what to do because they aren't reading what it says in the terminals.

I notice the dizziness thing slightly too, but not enough to not play it.

This is a great game and it really holds up. Should not be compared to Doom...it is way more advanced than that. Pathways into Darkness was the Doom competitor. This one is more comparable Duke Nukem 3D, but so much better.

I did get the 7th column achievement, is that the 'viral' thing?

It is slightly annoying though, I wonder if anything can be done about it..

Pathways into Darkness was the Doom era. This one came out between Doom2 and Quake.

I wouldn't really run around saying that this game is better than Doom, myself. Yes, it piles on ambitious ideas and, as much as I hate to admit it, really good storytelling, but Doom has the execution of the old-school action down pat. Always has. Always will.

I kinda like being able to look up and down myself.

Marathon 4 Life, yo!

I'd say it's at least 10x better than Doom. Surprised anyone could disagree, but hey it's all opinion.
In fact Doom on XBLA got a big 'no sale' from me.

I played the demo and enjoyed it. I'm still wrestling with CC about the Xbox point cards but if I win that battle I'll definately be getting this.

just do what I did... a BB price match.

YMMV. Myself and a few other CAGs have gotten denied.

If you have a CompUsa, try PMing there, it's what I did. And they had cards for $17.95. Walked out with 2 cards for that price!

I played the demo and was enjoying it, but got more and more nauseous by the moment and had to turn it off. I don't think I've ever gotten that dizzy and nauseous playing a game. Too bad....I probably would have bought it otherwise....

I read the IGN review and saw that it made them naesous and thought "lol, pussies".

Then I downloaded the demo and within 2 minutes I retracted that thought.

DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME DRUNK

You WILL splatter your TV.
