XBLA - Bungie's Marathon: Durandal - 8/1 @ 800pts

Wow, I downloaded the demo of this and tried the only level available. One of the most confusing games I have ever played, I had no idea what to do. Of course I got stuck in Doom too, so maybe these types of games just don't go with me. The multiplayer seems like it would be fun, but if I can't manage the single player, I won't bother.

Not crazy about the Single Player but Survival is hella fun and I can only imagine it gets better when playing online co-op.

Haven't got the opportunity to try that out yet, although I'd like to. None of my friends except Brak have this game.

If you're confused or don't know what to do, most likely you need to read the terminals. They tell you your mission, along with the story. You can make the font larger in preferences.

Has anyone who is getting dizzy tried lowering the sensitivity a bit or turing on bobbing or whatever they call that? I know this never used to happen on the original version.

I think it was a mistake to try it last night when I already had a headache. I only have ever been slightly motion sick when playing any games, period (I think things like original Doom on PC in recent years where it just seems to run a tad to fast sometimes). However, I couldn't even finish the first level, it was just so bad. Especially when moving up close next to walls or during the weird floaty jumps/falls. I may have to play around with the sensitivity, because I was just really surprised at how nauseous it made me.

Wow. After reading all these replies and reviews, I just thought to myself "pfft. amateurs." But man. After 10 minutes of the demo, despite being a seasoned FPS player since the days of Quake, I had to turn off the game before my headache got any worse. I wonder if there's any way to patch the speed of the movement or something...
I'd say it's at least 10x better than Doom. Surprised anyone could disagree, but hey it's all opinion.
In fact Doom on XBLA got a big 'no sale' from me.
Well, to be honest, I think it falls on the old UT99 vs. Q3A scale. No matter how you slice it, UT99 is the technically better game, but Q3A is just plain a load of fun in ways that UT99 is not.

Of course, I fall on the UT99 side of the argument in that one and the Doom side on the other.
Turning on bobbing helped me feel a little less like throwing up.
I was about to suggest this. It made all the difference in the world to me.

Ehh is turning on bobbing only an option after you buy it ? I was playing the trail and wooo that was messing with me. I looked through the setting but nothing popped out at me that looked like it might help.

I'll give another look and try the bobbing option if I can find it.

I think one reason that so many people are getting motion sickness is that it's running at 60fps. The original was capped at 30, I believe.

Also if you're using a 4:3 TV... well, the original M2 was kind of widescreen, even on a 4:3 monitor. This was because the HUD took up a small percentage of the entire screen:

So the ratio in the 360 version is the same but for 4:3 ratio they just cut the sides off and squished the weapons closer together. People who use 4:3 TVs and played the Halo 3 beta probably experienced the same feeling. If you went into splitscreen online with the Halo 3 beta, it felt more natural. Same with M2.

Went back into the trial, turned on head bob, lowered the sensitivity, tried moving slower - it's better, but still rather uncomfortable. At this point I'm not sure how much "work" I should be putting into a game that's not even free. Kind of a bummer really, because I had never played the original, and really wanted to go through the story. Not sure what to do.

downloaded the demo, but i didn't like it at all. Pretty dissapointing about this and the spyglass game but at least i still have 1200 points to save for other games/DLC

Very disappointed with this one. I use a projector (120" display) and after about 6 minutes of wandering through the demo, I felt like I wanted to puke. I'm still kind of woozy as I type this.

You can make the font bigger? Oh thank god. The movement hasn't bothered me at all, but the terminal text is way too small for me to read without getting a headache.

It doesn't seem like many people bought this. I was trying to find a deathmatch game last night, and there was only one Player Match room going at any given time. There were no Ranked Matches at all.

Dang, its weird, I tried the demo out a couple of days ago early in the morning and I felt fine. So I decided to buy the game yesterday and I got headaches too. Its weird... I think its because of my new plasma I got, which is bigger and wider than my old CRT. I knew I should have gotten Doom or Assault Heroes instead :(

i bought this game. liked it for 1 day... kinda boring MP and boring story. not to mention uneven points. its like halo took a blow to the head with a very heavy object.

Dissapointment all around. :( i give it a frowny face.

Ok, after playing more I have practically no dizziness, except for when turning a lot. However, I'm dead stuck on where to go now, *sigh*. Tried out the multiplayer too, thought it sucked. Single-player is ok I guess.

An game update just went up

A title update just went live. I'll post the change log once I have an official ok from MS.

---------

fuck it.

Unofficial Changelog:

- New Field of View option. You can play with the classic Marathon field of view, or you can turn it off and play with a modern Field of View. For reference, the new view is 90 degrees horizontal on a 4:3 display and 112 on a 16:9. Chances are if you felt any disorientation effects, this will take care of it for you. We had high levels of success with this once we located some people who experienced discomfort.

- New Gun Bob animation option. You can turn on and off the effect of the actual weapon bobbing up and down.

- Sensitivity options. You now have many more options to choose in selecting your controller sensitivity.

- Hosts now post Bob kills to the Bob-B-Q leaderboard instead of zero. This only applies to coop games.

- New Spazeroid controller layout. You wanted Legacy controls, you got em. Honestly nothing makes my head spin more than fathoming how anyone can play like this in 2007.

- Die in Lava in coop? Not a problem, now if you die under a doing damage liquid (Lava or Goo) in coop, you weapons will drop on the last safe ledge you were on, instead of in the lava/goo. No more swimming for weapons.

- The Host is now notified of dropping players.

- Kind of Like Marathon but not sure if it's for you? You can now play 1 Survival level for 6 minutes in the Demo. If you were on the fence, try this out, I think you'll like it.

The update sounds good. Glad to see they care enough to support an XBLA game. I'm still stuck on the second fucking level but I'll get back to it someday.

Patch out now...supposed to help with Motion Sickness:
- Added Survival mode to the Demo. Check out 6 minutes of intense survival carnage, this will give you a taste of the larger survival game in the full version.
- Tired of swimming for your weapons when you die in lava in Cooperative mode? Now when you (or a team mate) dies in Lava or Alien Goo, their weapons will drop safely on the ledge next to them, no more sunburn!
- Are you an Old School gamer who uses Old School controls? We added a new and 7th controller set which will give you Legacy controls.
- Added more sensitivity settings to give you even tighter control.
- Older games like Marathon, use a very narrow view angle (field of view) while new games use a much wider view. Now you can toggle between the original Marathon field of view (Classic View Angle) and a new modern view angle. (This should fix motion sickness)
- Added a "player disconnected" message for the host in multiplayer games.
- Fixed a bug where quick match wouldn't find available matches.
- Fixed a bug where the host would not post Bob kills to the Bob-B-Q leaderboard in coop games.

I'll try the demo again I guess.
