Features

The Japanese arcade hit Ikaruga comes to Xbox LIVE® Arcade! Treasure's award-winning scrolling shooter brings a tactical twist to the genre with its yin-and-yang gameplay: the color of your ship determines your effect on enemies. In this polarized system, enemy ships and their bullets are one of two colors. Attack an enemy of the opposite color for extra damage. Absorb enemy fire of the same color as your ship, and use the energy for a special attack. Destroy multiple enemies of the same color to score a chaining bonus. Play solo or cooperatively, and use your polarity to achieve victory!

 • Co-op play: Multiplayer support for two-player co-op offline or over Xbox LIVE allows you to clear the levels with a friend.
 • Video replay: Record your best moves and replay them to awe your friends.
 • Arcade shoot-'em-up action: Five full classic and exciting levels are coupled with twelve new achievements to master.
Sweet...

Two player co-op would be nice but I don't think it's possible with all the crap and perfect timing required for something like this but we shall see... either way it's a great game for XBLA.

I can only imagine how fucking impossible the achievements are going to be.

It's one of Calvin's stories or dreams (I think?) from Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson.

calvin and hobbes

ah, somebody posted that since the last time i refreshed the page
Sounds great, I'll guess we'll see it in a year?
probably. just knowing it's on its way is great news. now I can get rid of my Gamecube version.

I will endure a hundred years of "Millepedes" and "Root Beer Tappers" to play Ikaruga on XBLA.

Which is a good thing too, because it'll be fuckin' forever before it comes out.

 I know gamers, on the whole, tend to focus on the empty half of the glass. Nevertheless, it is nice that Microsoft seems to recognize that it has to do a lot to regain gamers' trust with XBLA.

i had an import for the dreamcast back in the day, maybe now i can figure wtf was going on with it when the english xbla one hits

This is great news!! I'm definitely glad I held off picking this up at GS a couple of weeks ago. Can't wait to check out that Achievement list.
Its going to be a great 2009 for XBLA!!!
QFT.

I don't know why they announce this shit, when we aren't going to see it for ages. They need to take a page out of Nintendo's playbook and just announce the title the week before they come out.

This is what XBLA should be getting. Decent games. Ikaruga is fantastic and while I wouldn't consider selling the Gamecube version for this, it's definitely good news for anyone who missed that version.

Damn, I was hoping that Treasure's Ikaruga team was working on a new game, not a port. I already have Ikaruga for the Gamecube, but if it comes with online co-op (that doesn't suck) I'll buy it again.
based off of what?
Yeah, that's very generous lilboo.

I'm thinking it's going to be an xbox 720 launch title.

I believe it's from Calvin and Hobbes. Sounds like I'm kidding, but it really is!

Don't want to be a negative nancy, but I'd much rather have Radiant Silvergun, if only because it is harder to find and costs about 3 times as much on good ol Ebay.

Seems like Treasure is intent on never porting this or Guardian Heroes ever.

But anyways, who cares... it's not like the game won't come out for another 5 years and we'll all be playing Asteroids and Missle Command in the mean time.

XBLA... just more promises. I tell you what though, the future XBLA sounds awesome.

I can't wait to see what they announce next! Because what they announce is a thousand times better than what actually comes out.

Now MS can hype up Ikaruga for the next few months only for people to be continually disappointed when it's not Ikaruga every Wednesday, and they can give it a vague release date like "May" which they won't have it out by.

Fan-fugu-tastic. Chalk me up as another person who never found the Cube version. Now to put it out of my mind for however long it takes the damn thing to finally show up...

Yeah it's a shame about GH as I'd love it in HD with online CO-OP.

They pretty much have to hype it up at this point. It doesn't look like MS announced this title at all...someone just saw it on their debug box and leaked the info. XBLA has been excruciatingly slow, but this time might not be their fault. Who knows when MS would have announced Ikaruga if no one still knew it was in development?

sweet, now I have one less reason to keep my DC hookedup. Now if Rez and FPWD ever come out, I'm set.

I think Treasure of all companies should be heavily supporting XBLA. They excel at making great arcade-like titles.

I love that comic.
<
And FWIW, it is not from the 80s. The comic that picture is based on ran on Jan. 1, 1995. The picture wasn't actually part of the comic itself, but was on the back cover of the collection (There's Treasure Everywhere) in which the comic appeared.
Back OT, Ikaruga on XBLA sounds great. I just got Ikaruga for the GC, but it would definitely be worth buying it again for HD (assuming it is reasonably priced). Hopefully I will be good enough to get some of the achievements by the time it comes out.

Wow, this is going to be an interesting decision. I have the Gamecube title (put a ton of time into it, and I absolutely loved putting my scores on the Ikaruga website for the leaderboard).

However, already owning it, can I really buy it again? I hate rebuying games, but this might be the one that gets me.

But why? It's got less content because I guarantee you they won't include the extras the GC version had.

Games like this have no chance of hitting the Live Arcade until the bigger hard drive arrives, and maybe not until it's had a chance to really reach back into the early adopter population.

I say, if for anything than it should be for the convenience of having it on the XBLA. I'd rebuy it for that alone, as I could sell the GC version, buy some points, and have some extra cash to put towards something else. The d-pad is an issue, but I have faith another Hori stick will come out with VF5...the market will be primed, just like it was with SF2 and DoA4.

even better would be if they actually did the game right with smooth online co-op and leaderboards. Too bad I just jinxed it-- game companies never implement logically awesome features and smooth online play for the games that need it most

Don't forget 720p and Widescreen support--- That's right! Tate mode on a 32" WS HDTV? Yes, please!

(Although my folks would kill me for doing that to their TV.)

I don't remember this being any more than 300mb for the DC disc...and compression technology is better. and you can delete and redownload games. and the bigger HD probably isn't coming. sorry. :)

Yeah, have to agree here. Radiant Silvergun would be a much better choice for the reasons already given.

Still, if and when all these future games actually do come, we'll all be shitting in our collective pants. And what a wonderful release that will be....

I have the GC version, but never bothered to get good because I never really had anyone to compete with.

With a game this hard, I want others to see that I have wasted countless hours perfecting each second of the game ;)
