XBLA - Ikaruga - 800pts

Wow..I tried the demo and loved it. I'm glad I didn't buy that Triggerhart Exelcia or whatever it was called...this is a much better and harder game. I like challenges (although I hear it's very hard in the latter stages). Gotta go get some MS points..

I though it was kind of simple at first then I got farther I haven't been able to get past the third stage kind of sad really. How many chapters does the game have anyway?

Most of the people I have on my friends list on CAG didn't even buy this game =/

I got 2 million points on the first two levels alone, and that score blows away anything else.

My tag is Master Roufuss, add me! So I can grow my leaderboard and challenge myself to get even better ;) I think I can do the first stage blindfolded, I can usually get a chain of about 60, it's still a far cry from the people who can chain 130 or so... those replays are insane.
Ill add you Roufuss, I think I have you beat.
You added me once before, but I think you took me off because I didn't have a 360.

Now I'll feel motivated to get past level 2, I basacially stopped when I annhilated my friend's list after only playing the game for an hour lol. Ikaruga is awesome though, as much as I loved Omega Five, that and Aegis Wing were painfully easy to play after playing Ikaruga.

Edit: Don't have me beat anymore, up to 2,750,000 now ;)

Jesus Christ. I am watching the #1 ranked Single Player Arcade Mode player replay, and that's all I have to say: Jesus Christ. He must see Ikaruga like how Neo sees the Matrix. Good god.

Yea, I watched that too... that is months of dedication right there, and a shit ton of memorizing, on top of skill.
What should I get, this game or REZ HD?
It depends on what you're looking for.
If you want a constantly challenging shooter that'll will push your reflexes and memorization skills to the limit then Ikaruga is for you. I'd recommend against buying it if you're not seeking a challenge.

Rez is a game that's more focused on providing a memorable audio/visual experience than it is a challenging shooter experience. So if you want something less harrowing but still high quality, then Rez is a good buy.

You're back! Send me an invite (though I don't have this game just yet - may pick it up soon though). I sent you a Wii message a while back and never heard back. I thought maybe you were gone - in the more permanent sense that is ...

My only problem is that I'm really looking forward to Castle Crashers and Bionic Commando that are both coming soon. I liked the demo for Ikaruga (the backgrounds were awesome, too!) but Rez has me wondering if the gameplay gets any deeper. Does your character change in the later levels? I've got like 3200 points but only really want to spend 800 right now because of the GTAIV DLC coming in a few months along with those two XBLA games I know I'm gonna get.

Geeeez my skills have fallen away on this one... my former high score was about 11 million on the Cube version, but am only sitting on a piddly 3.7 million right now.... oh well :)

I thought the Dot Eater Achievement (Beat a level without shooting) was doing be tough. It 's the easiest achievement in the game.

how do you do it?

You eventually unlock a score attack mode, so you can work on high scores on levels. Plus you get a few spiffy options once beyond mode opens up. Rez doesn't really get that deep, though. It's more about the experience than anything else, though going for high scores and high shot down percentages is fun.
how do you do it?
All you do is basically absorb everything that comes to you(without shooting). You can die and still get it.

ya, I'm surprised it wasn't "Complete all Five stages without shooting and without dying". That would've kept us busy.

Yep, the Dot Eater achievement is not supposed to be hard, more of an inside joke with a few charity AP points attached to it.
Holy Cow the 3rd level is hell, I doubt I'm going to beat it to unlock the 4th level.
You unlock an extra continue for every hour you play total.

After 7 or so hours, you unlock free play, which is unlimited continues.

But I doubt they'll count your score on Free play. Oh well, If that's the only way I'm getting through that level, than that's the way I'll have to play it.

I don't even care about the scoreboards, I suck at this game too much for that. There's no way I could possibly get through even the 1st and 2nd level consecutively with the defaults. Just doing that would be an accomplishment for me.

Just got the unstoppable achievement for the full 200 gamerscore. Mainly played the game on easy on co-op with my brother. He's missing the unstoppable achievement though, because he died on the last stage of final boss (when you can't shoot). First time we played this was last week when it released and we just got the free play setting so it took us around 8 hours to do everything (achievement-wise).

Definitely one of my favorite XBLA games, and I'd never been a fan of these type of shooters.

Forgot to add on the achievements you don't have to play on default settings. We had our settings on the max amount of lives, with extra lives at 2 million, and the continues off.

Just tried this out, and promptly bought it. I can tell I'm going to completely suck and need unlimited continues, but I'll still enjoy it.

I love games with continues... they recognize I suck, but they accept me for who I am and let me play on... :)

Aw, man. And here I was just about to post a  for you. What's the maximum number of lives?
I just tried twice to get the dot eater achievement and it didn't work. I don't get it.
Try remapping your controls so all you can do is switch polarity. Then there's no way you'll miss it. :)

I didn't fire at all, I swear to god. Are there any specific settings or anything for it? I just went through chapter 1 and didn't fire anything.

EDIT: I got it, I guess you can't have continues on?

I know you can't use continues when you're going for the A grade achievements, so maybe it applies to dot eater too.

I think it's 5.

What's the easiest way to get A ranks? I got some decent chains, but never broke past B. Does the difficulty and/or settings also factor into the rankings?

Man, I haven't played a bullet hell in a while. It's nice to get the pathing skills back up to speed.

There is no easy way.

It takes lots of memorization, quick reflexes and lots of practice.

Download the replays of the guys with the best score and watch what they do. It'll blow your mind.
It'll also give you a deeper appreciation for Ikaruga's design, which at first seems simple, but it is actually very well thought out.

I just hope the XBox 720 is "backwards" with Live titles, because I sold my Cube copy for $35 and downloaded the XBL version for the ultra cheap 800 points with acheesements!

This game owns much ass, and if you don't have it already you need to get it. NOW.

Might be off topic ..but this game is pretty awesome and a new 'genre' for me. Are there any games similar to this that are as good or close to being as good for any of the recent systems or coming out for a system?
thanks,
(now back to getting owned by level 3)

Shumps are a new genre for you? Well, that makes me feel old. :oldman:

Anyway, back to your question. Some other games to check out on XBLA are Omega Five, Triggerheart Exelica, and Aegis Wing. None are as highly regarded as Ikaruga (or as hard). Aegis Wing is free... and not very good. It's main hook is 4 player on-line multiplayer. Omega Five is a solid shooter, which features multiple characters to play as and 360 degree shooting. Triggerheart Exelica is also decent, although the graphics look a bit dated. Exelica has a unique "capture" mechanic, where you can grab enemies and use them as a shield or swing them around and throw them at other enemies. Of course both Omega Five and Triggerheart Exelica have free trial versions.

For other platforms, here are some titles to check out:

Gradius V (PS2) - excellent shooter from the long running series!
R-Type Final (PS2) - not as good as I had hoped, but a massive number of ships to unlock and play as
Raiden III (PS2) - haven't played it myself
Taito Legends Vol. 2 (PS2/Xbox/PC) - has a selection of more recent shooters, such as Darius Gaiden, Metal Black, Raystorm/Ray Crisis, Gekirindan, and Grid Seeker: Project Storm Hammer (Note: different platforms have different games); a good value
Nanostray 2 (DS) - haven't played it, but it just came out

For upcoming games, a remake of 1942 called 1942: Joint Strike is coming this year to XBLA.
