XBLA - Prince of Persia Classic - 800pts - Gen Discussion & Info
Holy shit, classic remakes on live arcade always have me by the balls. This is definitely day 1 for me.
Dude, I feel yas!

Eh, I'll give the demo a whirl, but at 800 M$ I'm going to have to pass. I still haven't bought Alien Hominid & Catan yet, among others.

Here's to hoping that next week is Bomberman Live, I'll gladly pony up 800 M$ for that.

Hey is this the same game that can be unlocked on the backward compatible Xbox version of Prince of Persia Sands of Time? If so then pass for me.

Alien Hominid is my absolute favorite XBLA game, it is definently worth buying, and it isn't too hard when you get into it(if it still is hard, then change the difficulty).

Nope, it is a complete remake of the game, with 3-D graphics and such; look at the screens.

800 points for one hour of gameplay - pass.

who said xbl"arcade" games aren't still designed to suck down your quarters? It just does them all at once, up front! :D
Yes, because the game deletes itself after an hour.
It's a fair point, it really won't have much replay value. Unless they're planning some DLC in the future.

The $10 price point has gotten a little old.

Well, the chances of making it to the end in your first hour are slim to none and the point of PoP was always to do better time wise.

Thats the reason I won't be buying this. I'll pay $5 for one hour but not $10.

Think you can beat this the first time around? If so, then yes the game is only 60 minutes (or less) however, I highly doubt most will pass it the first time around unless they've played through and remember the original. I'm certain your $10 will give you more than only 60 minutes of enjoyment. I'll be picking it up as it's one of the very few games my wife actually remembers playing long ago.

Just downloaded it.
+ 800 points for me this week!

It's a neat concept, and if I played/loved the original I'd enjoy this too..but.. meh. It's really all not that interesting. I would have probably given more chance/hope at 400 points though..

I'm liking it quite a bit from what little I've played so far. Once you get going there's a great flow to it that feels better control-wise than the original game. Transitions from running to walking or jumping are smoother than they used to be, where you'd spend a lot of time stopping and starting to line up jumps. I can't properly comment on the combat as I've only fought the easier guards so far :(. The addition of a checkpoint system is the only thing I could see being kind of a double-edged sword: helpful to get through some of the more difficult trap sequences, but might make the overall game less challenging.

They did a nice job re-working the classic with better controls and the graphics look great. Unfortunately at 800 points It's still kinda iffy for me. I'm going to ask the wife if she wants to split the budget cost as I am saving my 800 points for streets of rage and the like.

the price is sadly steep but standard. thats what they think the perceived value of non-crappy games is. its a good game but 800 points? .... Not the best value.
Well, the chances of making it to the end in your first hour are slim to none and the point of PoP was always to do better time wise.
There is some merit in this line of reasoning. One of my favorite games ever was "Out Of This World" (A.K.A. "Another World") for my old Commodore Amiga (it got ported to SNES and some other platforms as well). I'm pretty sure the total game can be played through in less than an hour once you figure it all out, but getting there is a fun ride and one of the fondest memories of my gaming life.

So I may give this one a shot once I get more points.

There's a PC remake of Out of this World actually.. it's only available as an indie online, no new graphics. Just updated to run with DirectX, modern hardware and higher res that's all.

But anyway... back to Prince of Persia..

It's pretty damn good so far, especially if you are a fan of the original. There are a LOT more moves and once you master them, it's a lot more fluid than the original i.e. little step little step, jump. He has dive rolls, wall jump into grabs, standing backflip (haven't figured this one out yet), even last minute one handed falling grabs in the opposite direction. They also reduced the inertia, speed and distance from when you run and then have to turn around which was especially bad on the PC version. The whole game is a lot tighter and in some ways easier but there are still the really annoying one platform running jumps that you'll be screwing up all the time

It starts out kind of dull when you're in the catacombs but picks up a lot once you get into the palace for a really nice tileset change. It's amazing what they've been able to pack into the 50 mb. However the cutscenes have suffered (no speech just animations and they are kind of dull and hard to interpret) because of that.

The combat is also a LOT better. There are multiple swing animations, combos, finishers, parries, dodges, blocks and a new running jumping sword attack I just discovered. Although it starts out easy (initially the guys dont block and you can mash your way through a lot faster than previous version while going "WTF? EASY MODE??") it gets a lot harder later on. There are different enemies, the shield guys in particular are harder to counter since if they get off a shield block the counter attack comes out much quicker. One thing they've added is that any kind of defensive move or getting hit will move you backwards noticeably so you can't be on the defensive forever and there's a lot more tension whenever you are fighting close to the edge. When the game starts getting hard the pace of the combat picks up dramatically closer to the SNES Version (same mechanics, but a LOT faster so the swords look like a dervish of flying blades). One nice if frustrating touch is that the longer the attack/parry rallies last, the quicker your parry timing has to be to defend the counterattacks.

Also does anyone remember how you get more life bubbles? I'm stuck right now when I have to fight 3 guys one after the other all on 5 or 6 bubbles each when I have three and they are all hard. I seem to remember some way to do it in the original (was it the purple bottle?) but in this one I've only drank reds and the poison one so far..

OMFG I loved out of this world! One of my all time favorites!I completely agree with you. After you know what to do, you can finish that game so fast, but it was still one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Played it on the Atari ST (best computer ever!)

If XBLA came out with Out of this world and Heart of the alien for 400 points I would overheat my xbox with pelvic thrusts.

Placing the value of a game in line with the length of a speedrun is not so cool, guys!

I'm definitely downloading this when I get home. It looks excellent!

I believe IGN's review mentioned that Microsoft has recently increased the size cap for XBLA games. So, maybe this is a bit larger than 50mb!

Nope, this game was completed before the 100MB increase.

It's 49.98(?) MBs

What's Heart of the Alien? an Out of this World type game? if so I'll definitely have to check it out.

oH btw, the extra life things are red vase's that look a bit fatter and have a different design. There's one on level 2 and another one on level 4. I'm on level 6 now but it's cool to be able to go back to not jsut optimise your time but pick up extra lives and the changes carry through to your current save :)

I think I heard it was done by a different development team, and thus it wasn't quite as good as OOTW, but it still continues the story so I'd love to finally play it. IIRC it was only relased on some out-of-reach platform that I never had any intention of getting... 3DO I think? Or perhaps Sega CD? So yeah I'd flip over an XBLA release.

And then there was Flashback... awesome game that also had that similar animation style to PoP. I'd flip for a remake of that... or better yet a 2D sequel (they did a 3D sequel but it was in the early PS1 days... not very pretty).

The animation was rotoscoped, which I believe was the first of it's type used in a game. I think i remember playing heart of the alien on Sega CD.

Well i fell in and bought it i sitll have my nes version upstairs it was a great game then. i dont mind the $10 for a little remade nostalgia.

Thank goodness for demos!!! I tried this one, and it was deleted the same day...I can't see myself paying $10 for this one....on to next week...:)

Never been a Prince of Persia fanatic, didn't find it to interesting.

Is this supposed to be an Aladdin type story. I couldn't help but notice the similarities, the villan is Jaffar, the Prince looks like Aladdin, Jaffar tries to blackmail the Princess into marrying him...
I'd rather see Flashback remade, but this is very impressive. I may pick it up.
Oh man you said it! how about Out of this world ( or is it called another world?) made by the same company

Read the last half of page 4.

+1

Couldn't stand the way it controlled - if it's a platformer, that's a deal-breaker usually. Yes I understand games are different and you have to learn them, so I took the time and even once I got used to it... it's just not my style. On to next week indeed... those ~5000 points are burning a hole in my pocket... not a good trend lately.
RushnAttack/Zevious - um, no.
Mad Tracks - whoops flop.
Pac-Man CE - no multiplayer & too pricey

I tried the demo...I really liked the updated controls...I'm just trying to figure out if its worth 800 points. At 400 I would have it already.
