XBLA - Shadow Complex - 1200pts

great game and a lot of fun!

I like the realistic aspect of the gear hes got, I could definitely see Epic/MS go huge with this and make a full fledged retail title, 3D third person, action adventure type game, like Uncharted. Hell, they've got Nolan North already.
So...I played a bit of it. As a big Metroid fan, so I'm probably going to be a bit harsh on this game.
I'm a big fan of the Metroid games too, and the gameplay in Shadow Complex sounds pretty fun, but I can't help being totally turned off by the Tom Clancy generi-spy atmosphere and completely nondescript protagonist. The 1UP.com review is the only one I've read that's really hit on that.

I like the demo, a lot, but expectations being what they are, it's different from what I imagined. The pace of gameplay is definitely slower than your average Metroidvania, which kinda surprised me because it looked so fluid in gameplay vids. I definitely wanted to explore the hell out of the place which is a plus, the environment definitely has a bigger hold on me than some Metroidvanias. I'll definitely play through the demo again to get the hang of the controls. But I think it's absolutely worth the purchase price.

This game reeks of awesomeness! I about crapped my pants when i came across a very "super metroidish" miniboss! 15 bucks is a f'ing steal for this game!

well so far im 22% finished and im 1:22:24 into the game and i freakin love it!!! i just got the first upgrade its so sweeeeet
I don't think any of them would disagree with that.

One of the best things about xbla, imo, is the indy feel of many of the games. Many devs DO take chances, and it's usually only the retro titles or licensed stuff that disappoints.

Space Giraffe kind of set a watermark, it was VERY indy, very much a high risk chance taker. But at 400 points it didn't sell well, and a lot of devs looked at that and scratched their chins. That's just one example that comes to mind, but historically 400 point games don't make enough money, Geo Wars was the exception.
Space Giraffe didn't sell because a bad game. It could have been 100 pts and it still wouldn't have sold. The game was pushed as a Jeff Minter game because it wasn't a quality game.

I Like it, but fuck I'm already lost at 7%.
Where do I go to get into Dr.Sweet's Laboratory? I Just killed the helicopter, but I can't enter the door where the blue line is pointing at me to go.

Are you shittin' me? For the love of god, please no, make it stop.

There's a door in that area that won't open until you climb the ladder in the other room and get the machine gun, did you do that?

Nah, it was something else entirely. I Figured it out after finding a tiny corridor (and alot of frustrated screaming), thanks though.

ok im pretty deep now but im crazy stuck to lol
i have to go back and find claire in that room she hid in, i totally dont remember what part of the map that was, lots of back tracking here

Is it the future yet?

I thought we were suppose to have dangerous life-threatening games and contests for our convicts, televised, to help fund their keep and more - in the future.

Hearing Nathan Drake's voice come out of my Xbox is...weird.

Having a lot of fun with it, though. Reminds me of Out of this World. I played the hell out of that game in college.

At first I thought this game was good, not great. Then I put in over three hours without realizing, this game is stupidly fun.

I and many others love Space Giraffe, and have put hours into it. That's not the point though. I used that example because Jeff was most vocal about it. I have talked to other developers that have told me the same thing, but I won't mention them here without permission.

Main Point:
The theory that 400 point arcade games will sell more than 2x more than 800 point arcade games is a statistically proven falsehood. Microsoft has those statistics, they show them to devs, and that's why you don't see 400 point games anymore.

Best XBL arcade game to date. Everything about the game says fun. Its a must buy for anyone on the fence. I hope to see more games of this quality in the future from the XBL arcade

Man, just got through playing the demo, it is simply amazing from what I've sen. It was fairly long for a demo and the gameplay seems freaking good.

It was a nice, epiphanic moment when I got the gun, then realized I couldn't blow open the green-colored obstacles. Just like the Super Missile doors in Metroid... :D

I think I have to start over, as I got myself into a nasty hole. I quit at the save room just after the room where you first get to use the turret, so when I started the game up again, I have to take all of those enemies out again without the turret. It's not hard to take them out, but I'm left with not much health left and little room for error going forward. I've been enjoying the game a lot, but I'll probably start over and avoid quitting there this time.
Won't that disqualify me for achievements for this save?
Didn't do anything like that to me. There aren't any achievements for beating the game on a harder difficulty either.

I'll give that a shot then. Thanks.

Edit: That helped. Got up to the point where I got the new gun and saved. Had a weird encounter with the group of four enemies in the following room, which never noticed that I killed one or two of their comrades with grenades.

I had the same issue Frisky, i snuck up on the first guy and killed him. Then i kept tossing grenades and running back to the save room to get health. After 3 trips I managed to get down and open that vent!

Yeah, that happened to me a few times while playing tonight. They're not very astute at noticing the dead bodies of their fallen comrades, either. ;)

Er, I got stuck on the campaign when

my current objective is to "make my way back to Claire," but I don't have any waypoints and I don't have the missile launcher yet. But I just picked up the stronger assault rifle. I've tried screwing around but ended up at the front door of the facility where you start off.

I tried going for the achievement to finish all 3 challenge sets, and those are a BITCH. I've finished the first 2 sets except for the last 3. If anyone has finished Challenge set #3, please give me some tips.

Apparently loading any leader board freezes my game. Well, anything besides Friends.

*sighs* feels like I've died and gone to Metroidvania heaven. Really love these type of games, honestly and truely.

I started this game tonight and thought Proving Ground was the tutorial....well that's done...I guess I'll start the campaign tomorrow...

For everybody else, I'd recommend doing the campaign first, as the Proving Grounds will spoil weapons/items you'll acquire later in the game.

Maybe a bit spoilerish, probably not though, but might be helpful for those going for 13%:
You can end the game early by getting in the Jeep
.

Just a note on this, I've heard that if you keep dying and are unable to get past a checkpoint, you'll eventually get a bit of a health increase (Like of 75 or something), to help you get past the part you're stuck at. I haven't played/failed enough to notice this myself, so I can't give any more details.
SOTN is $10. So only $5 cheaper.
Yeah, that's actually what I meant to write.
What? SotN isn't that much longer than six or eight hours, bro.
It's a moot point -- I found my own play-through of Shadow Complex lasting longer than that reviewer's estimate anyway. I don't know how long it *would have* taken by the end, though, since I managed to permanently trap myself at roughly the 90% mark, and I don't think I'm going to restart any time soon. For what it's worth, I *really* don't recommend obtaining things out of the order the game suggests for you.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm really kind of mad at how long they teased you getting some of the items in this game, particularly
the Missiles, which I just got
.

Yes, this is definitely a very good XBLA game, but I'd still prefer Castle Crashers to this as my favorite XBLA game. As far as Metroidvania games, it doesn't beat Symphony of the Night, and in comparison to Metroid games, the only game it beats is 2.

I played through most of it on casual just to get through it and on my way back
to Claire I hit "B" by the jeep and saw that humorous ending. At first I laughed, then I kept hoping I could just load the last save and continue from there. But then my 360 froze during the credits anyway.
Oh well.

To be fair, I can't think of any game of this type that is better than Symphony of the Night.

Super Metroid/Metroid Zero Mission are tied with Symphony of the Night in my book
