XBLA - SoulCalibur - 800pts

I just got my DC out yesterday to play some Samba de Amigo. Guess I'll pop SC in next.

Don't think I will be picking it up on XBLA...but I might change my mind.

I couldn't care less about online against random people but I just realized it also means I won't be able to play against my friends unless they're in the same room. So that's kinda too bad.
wow, I hope its full screen and not chopped up like most fighting games on XBLA

4:3 can go fuck itself in the grotto. This would have been a must buy for me.

If its choped on the sides like that, I will pass, have our technology not come this far for some fucken full screen action
ITT: People who never owned a Dreamcast and didn't know the game was never made to be viewed in Widescreen.

Just watched the trailer. Is this the arcade version, and not the vastly superior DC version? If that's the case, then forget it.

No, it's clearly the Dreamcast version. The arcade one looked like major ass. The Dreamcast version looked beautiful as it was. The fact that it's going to be available in HD is like an answer to those who couldn't get or use a VGA connection for the Dreamcast.

yup yup

dc>arcade

man the dc arcade stick was tits too. probably the best ive ever used. I wonder how that hori 360 arcade stick is. has anyone used it?

I most certainly played it on Dreamcast (to death!). And I loved it.

But 3D game remakes aren't like 2D remakes. There is little to no reason why they can't change the view frustum to make it widescreen.

I still own the Dreamcast version. So with no online play or widescreen I'll probably pass on this. Which is sad, because I was really excited about it when it was announced.

Found your problem. It's NOT a remake. It's a port with leaderboards and upped visuals due to the 360's capability of using Component, VGA and HDMI, whereas the Dreamcast's highest possibilities were S-Video and VGA. And even then, few TVs or monitors supported VGA at the time.

Yeah, you're right. I had forgotten that the DC version also featured the "Insert Coin" prompt for the second player. Been a long time since I've played it.

Yeah, I downloaded and played this today.... yes at work we get access to content on partnernet early so BLAH ... seemed complete didn't get a whole a lot of time with it.

I, for one, am shocked that Namco didn't make this 16:9 for the 13 or so DC owners who were playing it on a widescreen television in 1998.

I was going to get this, but since I have a new wide screen HD the absents of 16:9, online multiplayer, and an arcade mode have made me rethink it.

What? No, Mission mode(yes Story Mode is In)!! I was already disappointed with no online mode, now this and no 16:9, No purchase for me.

Let's hope Namco does something to add in online and bring back story mode via an add-on just like what they did for Tekken for the PS3.

Wait so this game is less than the one on the DC? Leaving out online was one thing, but if this is a shell of the original game I've got no reason to buy it.

Agreed. Sadly.

I decided that if I can still play SC3 on the PS3, there doesn't seem much purpose in spending 800 points on this game. I'll pass.

and here i was thinking i could put away my DC and the 480p VGA connector for good...i guess i'll play the demo first. i miss the old Survival ranking page. you know the one through dricas.net.jp or whatever (don't bother looking, it's completely gone, won't even show the rankings through webarchive).

in the IGN review, what does this mean:

...standard arcade mode (which offers a text story for each fighter upon victory)

isn't that what it's always been? and isn't Arcade Mode what you'd call "Story Mode?" a unique dialog at the "destined battle," a picture boook ending, done.

or when you guys say there's no Story Mode, are you talking about no Mission Mode?

No online I can deal with, but no mission mode either?

fuck that. I'd love to play SC again since my DC broke, but it just ain't worth it like this.

Has anyone purchased this and seen if it does have the story mode ? If it has the story mode and all the awesome art, I will purchase this, even though it's not 16:9, the upgraded visuals and the only fighting game my wife would ever play with me because she also thought SC 1 was just kick ass. But if is really dummed down, then I will continue to use my Dreamcast, as we just played a tournament last week of SC 1. She liked the Gamecube version of SC 2 with Link, but that's about all we liked about SC 2.

According to the IGN review, it has the art all unlocked from the beginning but doesn't have the Mission mode of the Dreamcast version.

With mission mode being MIA , no online multiplayer and no widescreen support i'll be passing on this, rather save the points for whatever downloadable content Soul Calibur 4 will have

The Arcade/Story mode is still there. The Mission Mode is mode you can gain points to unlock weapons, outfits, and artwork in the DC version. Since mission mode is not in the XBL version it take away a big part of the replay value.

Yup, looks like there's gonna be some nickel-and-diming if anyone wants Vader vs. Yoda.

On Topic: glad SC's coming out, too bad it's a gimped version.
Any impressions yet?
played the demo. If you still have your DC, I would still stick with that. Though its supposed to have touched up graphics, hell if I couldn't tell and I've spent countless hours playing it on the DC

yeah been playing it at work, and no mission mode kills it, yeah its still fun but that was the best part of the single player game

I had been playing with the vga cable so a clear picture is nothing new to me, game looks worse due to that huge border.

It'd be fine if they had included mission mode or even widescreen support, but missing both? I'll hold out until SC4.

the new blog thing caught my eye and i posted a mini-review earlier today:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=150

but basically i said:

-There's no opening sequence. Didn't have a chance to check if OPENING EDIT is in the Museum Mode/Options. But Museum Mode does have everything else.

-Everything has more shadows. If you remember it on the DC, characters looked like the rays of Christ were shining behind them. Oh not just that...IT WAS ALL OVER THEIR FACE. But now it has shadows....seems overdone though. I watched Hwang's exhibition video and half of his body was covered in shadows. And same with Kilik. This was a quick inspection, I'll look it over more later.

-Graphics are pretty good. I mean it's better than the 480p VGA box I have for my DC. 720p or whatever this game runs makes SC look a lot better. But it's not spectacular or anything.

-You know what I miss most? The online rankings from dricas.net.jp. I had some crazy 118 win streak in Survival. For like 2 days I was 6th or 7th on that DC leaderboard...and then the Japanese players took me down to like 150th place or whatever. Those boards are long gone, but this version has rankings for Survival, Time Attack, etc. This is one of the main reasons I bought this game. I never really knew after the DC boards went down how other people were doing. Nice to compare yourself to others (again).

-What's with these achievements? OK all of them are ok but 20 points for performing Ivy's Summon Suffering?? You might as well give me points for spin the analog in a full circle and mashing the all the buttons....oh wait you just did!

-No Mission mode is disappointing. But only disappointing ON TOP of not having online play. Stupid MS and their XBLA size restrictions. Oh well.

-Load times between battles are less than 2 seconds. I don't know what happened, but mann the load times on my DC are painful. This would be my 2nd reason for buying this game.

-I'm not gonna talk about controls really. Mainly because I haven't tried the joystick yet. I assume it's on point, but we'll see.

-There's a main option screen with a fire background with 4 Soul Caliburs on it with PLAY GAME, LEADERBOARDS, ACHIEVEMENTS, OPTIONS. The music on that screen sounds better than the ones in the actual game. I guess it's just a port of all the sound effects, voiceovers and music with no update or anything.

Of all the things its missing, if it was just in 16:9 I would have bought it. I'll have to wait for Star Wars edition to come out now.

haha yeah i can't wait for the Sith and Jedi editions either.

i forgot to mention that it doesn't have 16:9, but it has FULL. it takes up more of the screen than REGULAR (4:3), but it's no 16:9. still has borders on the sides though. let's call it...5:3?

I played the demo on a widescreen and it had borders on all 4 sides, was really, really distracting since it had the soul calibur logo within the border like a cheesy wallpaper.
