XBLIG Price Drops

Since Microsoft recently changed their pricing structure for Xbox Indies, larger games can can now be sold for 80 MSP. As a result, many XBLIG devs have opted to drop the price of their games. I thought it would be pretty cool to have a thread that would try to track what WORTHWHILE games are now cheaper.

DISCLAIMER: Yes, I know that Xbox Indies is a largely horrifying wasteland of shovelware and absolute garbage like "Avatar Zombie Massager" and "Look I Made a One Level Platformer with MS Paint!!!". (There's really no need to elaborate on it further, we all know this.) But there ARE some good games in the pile. And I'd like to keep the thread focused on those, if possible.

DISCLAIMER 2 (The More Important One):
Xbox Live Indie Games require an internet connection to start the game. It doesn't matter if you have a Silver (Free) or Gold account, just that the Xbox is connected to the internet. Again, this is only to start the game; once the game is running you can disconnect your Xbox, but not sign out of your profile.
I had always heard that when you play games online you can say "online interaction is not rated" and that allows a loophole to not have indie games be rated which would cost money apparently.

Maybe that's wrong though.
Nope, that's correct. ESRB is not law, but as a policy Microsoft complies. Requiring an Internet connection circumvents that. It's akin to one of those "on-line content not rated" disclaimers you see on certain games regardless of rating since opening up a game to the Internet via content or multi-player effectively takes what goes on in a game out of the developer's hands.

That said, do note that the Live connection is only needed to boot a game and does not need to be maintained while the game is running. Please do note this distinction in any disclaimer.

Hmm, I never thought of that. I never thought of disconnecting from the internet after starting an indie game, either. But sure enough, I started a game up, pulled the ethernet cable, and it still worked. I guess that's useful if you don't have an always-on internet connection.
I'll try to find a non-confusing way to explain that in the OP.

On a completely unrelated note, since Clover: A Curious Tale is only 80 MSP now, I finally decided to finish playing it. Does anyone know if there are any walkthroughs for the game? All I could find were these videos. (And I still don't know if I got the best ending.)

Clover is a steal for 80 points, holy hell. It was one of the highest rated games on my site for a while, and I think it is still the 2nd highest rated XBLIG. (Best voice acting in an XBLIG by far!) I sat down to play it for my review and like three hours later realized I had been playing for three hours, always a good sign.

There are some crazy difficult parts towards the end though, can't remember where I found help, or what I did. Wish I could help cause I remember there being a really tough part. I know that Binary Tweed actually posted some stuff on I think an Xbox.com forum helping people out, if that helps your search.

I wish I could get 3 people over to play that. Seems like it would be an awesome time.

Everyone I know is too elitist to appreciate it.

I was looking at the screenshots of this one. Seems like a simplified version of SpyParty, i.e. attempting to blend in by imitating an AI NPC. Is that assessment correct?

I've not played the remake extensively, but the first Clover had a rather abortive ending. That was the only one; you expect the game to go on beyond a point, but it doesn't. I don't believe the newer Clover has multiple endings. As I recall, it's basically just some cleaned up graphics, spoken dialogue, and some new puzzles added to the game.

Clover is nice enough, but I'm not much of a fan. The story is far too heavy handed, and it lacks the humor I expected from it when I saw the UK:R reference at the beginning. It was great seeing someone attempt an adventure game in this style, but I found its design and story pretty bland. I'd say it's definitely worth 80 points, but keep your expectations in check.

Having multiple endings was one of the new features in the remake/update. I've gotten 3 different ones so far, but I don't know how many there are total. Actually, I've come to the conclusion that given the story of the game, there is no "happy" or "good" ending.

I agree that from the look of the game, you'd expect a funny or light-hearted story and not a heavy political commentary.

As hard as it is to recommend yet another zombie-themed twin-stick shooter. Block Zombies! was just released and it is pretty damn good. It's the same basic formula as you've come to expect, only with a LEGO-inspired visual theme and a more open-ended map. For me it was an easy impulse buy at one dollar.

Did the Escape Goat dev ever say why he had to wait for February to drop the price of his game? I'm sure there's a reason but it just seems strange when games such as Cthulhu Saves the World dropped instantly. I find myself holding out hope for other titles such as Wizorb and Train Frontier Express, any of these would be worth three bucks in my opinion but I'm not going to jump on them if there's a chance I'll basically be getting three-for-one somewhere down the road.

Per XBLIG rules, Developers can only change the price on a game once every 90 days. Escape Goat was released the beginning of November, so the first opportunity to change to price will be the beginning of February.

Marketing? Get's people talking about the game and trying it before the drop, and I'm sure one or two people decided it wasn't worth the wait and paid full price.

Though I'm not certain, I think price drops also have to be approved by the XNA Community just like releases and patches. Whenever a games gets a price drop, it pops up on this page: http://catalog.create.msdn.com/en-US/gamescatalog.aspx?lc=1033&p=1 - just like new and patched games.

There's nothing to indicate this in the FAQ:
http://create.msdn.com/en-US/home/faq/xbox_live_indie_games#xboxfaq039

Also, Microsoft announced the new pricing scheme on 1/4/2012, the same day that Cthulu Saves the World dropped in price per the new scheme, suggesting that the price change for the game was instantaneous:

Yes, 2-4 local multiplayer only. No single player.

Cthulhu Saves the World released more than 90 days before the price drop date, meaning that when Microsoft made the change they could "change the price" cause it had been more than 90 days. It kinda makes sense they would limit how often the developers can alter the price.

Right, I was using that as an example to discount vamn's assertion that price drops also have to be approved by the XNA Community. The fact that Cthulhu Saves the World dropped in price almost instantly after the new pricing scheme was announced meant that it didn't go through any XNA approval process before dropping.

As for other games dropping, Wizorb and Train Frontier Express were both released more than 90 days ago. However, Wizorb is over 150MB, so it can't be priced any lower than 240 points.
However, Wizorb is over 150MB, so it can't be priced any lower than 240 points.
Wizorb might be able to squeeze in since there is some discrepancy between the size of the .ccgame and how it unpacks on the 360. There have been games over 50 MB in the past still able to get an 80 point listing just for that reason. Since Wizorb is just 6 MB over the limit, I'd imagine the developer may be in position to do just that.

That was just my guess. The page I was looking at lists when games pass the approval process for updates and releases. It also has games showing as newly approved when their prices drops, so I just assumed the two were related.

And in case anyone's interested, BloodyCheckers just got a big update today. A list of what got added can be found here.
I have to say, Hidden in Plain Sight is now my favorite indie game of all time.
Played Hidden In Plain Sight the other night with 4 players and had a blast. One of the best local multiplayer experiences I have had in a long time.

Yes its true !! I put in 3 months to literally double the size of the game, in terms of content and story and graphics. No change in price, the DLC is FREE. Also there are some very cool easter eggs hidden in the game...which someone will reveal later :)
Which game are you talking about kilroyfx? You are the dev of said game?
Googling, it turns out kilroyfx is the developer of BloodyCheckers, which vamn mentioned a few posts ago. Cool to see a developer posting in this thread!

Yes, very cool to see a dev reaching out to gamers. I bought Bloody Checkers after reading that post and seeing the amount of effort that went into the game. I haven't played it yet but it looks really good, plus the "Rage Quitting Fully Supported" line made me laugh.:)

After playing Hypership Out of Control for iOS, I think I'm going to get the XBLIG version at 80 points. But there seems to be a sequel. Has anyone played both it and Hypership Still out of Control? Any preference on which is better?

I tried so hard to make a game worth your $1 Dollar, and make it only 80 ms points. The update took over 3 months to create, but I am very happy with it.....also there is a crazy easter eggs in the game. Here is 1 easter egg.....Main Menu --> Help&Options --> Highlight your Gamertag (4th Row) --> Mash A&B at the exact same time repeatedly inducing a crash.....you will be brought to a new world !!

So, far I have produced 4 free updates, and this latest I call a DLC because of the sheer size. I play the game every day for at least 2 hours....I think it's a fun game, good break from COD, L4D2, and some others....

Go grab Bloody Checkers if you haven't already. Probably the best game for the money on XBLIG.

while we're on the subject of awesome indie devs reaching out / being on cag. figured I'd bring this up, an email I got from Dead Pixels maker who is on cag and read my post a few pages back about how I may have been charged twice for the game...

"Hi

I'm the developer of Dead Pixels, and I was just looking through the xblig thread here to see if there was any mention of my game, and I saw your post.

I'm guessing it could have been caused by the game's update going through on the same day.

I don't have the ability to refund you, but here's a download code for the game:

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

This way you paid for two copies, and you have two copies. You can give this second copy to a friend if you want.

John Common
CSR-Studios"

very very awesome thing to do. While I was a bit upset about maybe being charged twice (I'm not even entirely sure I was, and I let him know that). at this point I hope I was, and even back when I was it wasn't that big of a deal as it's only another dollar. but the fact he reached out like that when he really didn't need to, impressive :)
while we're on the subject of awesome indie devs reaching out / being on cag. figured I'd bring this up, an email I got from Dead Pixels maker who is on cag and read my post a few pages back about how I may have been charged twice for the game...

Getting to know some of the developers on the XBLIG marketplace has been one of the better parts of starting my site. A lot of very cool people out there making games on the service.

So I was supposed to be giving away a copy of Ninja War: Stolen Scrolls today, but the developer speaks very little English and I'm not sure he understood what I was saying. lol, happens sometimes.

kilroyfx I think I just played Bloody Checkers with you (I was Arucard06). Such a great game with a ton of awesome small details. Me and my friend have been looking for a MP game where we could play the game and have fun, but also just mess around and chat if we wanted. I think we just found it!

I suggest the game to all.

Alright, I'm going to toss Bloody Checkers demo onto the queue. You folks have convinced me (even though the screenshots on the marketplace are incomprehensible).

That same type of goofy is what made me buy it without demoing. It also makes me interested in Prank Call, as that game has the best boxart ever.

Yup, thanks for the support.....I have been playing the game for 8 months now....and try to play every day for a few hours. It's a great party game, where you can chat and help people explore the castle.

I just tried the demo this morning and while I liked the small details (candle going out when you sprint, etc.) I dont understand the game at all. The time ran out before I actually did anything except go in the front door and look at a couple of items on the wall. I thought there was going to be checkers battles or something. Im confused.
There are checkers battles. Most of them are portraits on the wall.
Ill have to try again then. I was rather distracted with the baby so I'm sure I can get further in less time.
Wizorb is worth getting, regardless.

Very cool game.
I asked the devs about that and they said they weren't sure if they wanted to do it or not. I think some devs might be hesitant if they are selling the game on another platform. Wizorb is $3 on Desura, so they may not want it sold at 2 prices. But, that's just a guess.

After playing Hypership Out of Control for iOS, I think I'm going to get the XBLIG version at 80 points. But there seems to be a sequel. Has anyone played both it and Hypership Still out of Control? Any preference on which is better?
They are pretty similar, but the new one has a few new modes. I'd say get the new one. They're both the same price.

Block Zombies is a ton of fun! The fact that it's in an open-ended map really helps it be a lot more fun than so many arena-based shooters. Can you imagine that game with actual missions and maybe some more RPG elements? Would be awesome. I have a full review up for the game though. http://www.armlessoctopus.com/2012/01/23/block-zombies-review-night-of-the-living-legos/

Wizorb and Train Frontier Express are both really a lot of fun. I think there are links to my reviews of them both on the front page of this thread.

Also, we're giving away a copy of EvilQuest on the site. I posted it in the contest page on CAG. It's probably not kosher to post to it here as well, but if you head to armless you'll see it, or if you go to the cag contest thread.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the recommendations in this thread. I've recently started checking out Indie games and not knowing where to even begin, this thread has provided a lot of great suggestions. Dead Pixels and Clover have been my two favorites thus far and Hidden in Plain Sight looks interesting but unfortunately I have no one to play with. I'm amazed that you all have been able to find so many gems among the multitude of indie games.
