XBLIG Price Drops

CAGiversary!

Since Microsoft recently changed their pricing structure for Xbox Indies, larger games can can now be sold for 80 MSP. As a result, many XBLIG devs have opted to drop the price of their games. I thought it would be pretty cool to have a thread that would try to track what WORTHWHILE games are now cheaper.

DISCLAIMER: Yes, I know that Xbox Indies is a largely horrifying wasteland of shovelware and absolute garbage like "Avatar Zombie Massager" and "Look I Made a One Level Platformer with MS Paint!!!". (There's really no need to elaborate on it further, we all know this.) But there ARE some good games in the pile. And I'd like to keep the thread focused on those, if possible.

DISCLAIMER 2 (The More Important One):
Xbox Live Indie Games require an internet connection to start the game. It doesn't matter if you have a Silver (Free) or Gold account, just that the Xbox is connected to the internet. Again, this is only to start the game; once the game is running you can disconnect your Xbox, but not sign out of your profile.

Miasma dropped to 80msp from 400. I had fun with the demo awhile back.
I don't know the correct genre but it has been called a SRPG and it is turn based.
I can't wait to dl it.

Infinity Danger has always been 80 points to my knowledge, least it was back when I did a review of it, but I definitely recommend it. It is a simple but really fun game. Same people who made Raventhorne. I would even say it was more fun than it had any right to be.
Oh yeah I forgot about Tempura of the Dead. I will so get in on that if it drops.
Agreed. I will as well. I looked yesterday as this was a game I was watching for a drop and was disappointed to see it was still 240. Hopefully it drops to 80.

I saw that we were mentioned on the top of the thread, so I figured I would pipe in.

We just finished putting together our "best of" list for 2011, so if you're interested in what some of the highlights on XBLIG for the year were, then here ya go.

There are tons of great recommendations on this list. Apple Jack is a lot of fun and is only a buck. There is a sequel coming out this year too. The Tempura of the Dead is one of my favorite XBLIGs.

Updated the OP for the most part - I'll add some of the radiangames titles later.

I'm glad to see so much XBLIG support in here. And apparently, at some point this thread passed 14,000 views. If even 1% of those has turned into a single XBLIG sale, then I think we've helped out Xbox Indies quite a bit.
If anything, we do have a nice list of worthwhile dollar games for CAGs to check out.

Vamn, you've done a great job, along with the others who submitted suggestions. I think I've downloaded about 10 games because of this very thread. Indie gaming is something important to support indeed. No exec asshole to say, "I don't think this concept will work."

The Old Spice games -- yes, there are quite a few of them -- are the result of a contest the company ran tied to Microsoft's own Dream.Play.Build. The catch is that developers had to make a game incorporating aspects of the Old Spice brand, and the best game would win that developer diamonds or something. I don't recall any of them being particularly great, but there's a half decent Uniracers clone for those who miss Uniracers. Of course, the wonky control will still leave you missing Uniracers. :p Still 240 points though.

I appreciate inclusion of my site, by the way. :^) I've always been of the mind that the less time people devote to covering and mentioning the crap, the better. I'd recommend you do similar with this topic, but it's your thread, and I can see wanting to be thorough given the price reduction focus, for better or worse. :p

Sequence sounds pretty cool, and I don't have a dance pad for the Xbox, but I'd be inclined to pick one up for this game if I can find one cheap. That sounds fun. If not, I do have a RB guitar. Definitely going to check out the demo at least.

I also grabbed the demos of 4 or 5 of the other ones too. Thanks for the top 10 list!

Only thing - why don't your articles have links to the games on xbox.com?

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I just wanted to say thanks a ton for this thread, it has definitely changed my attitude toward XBLIG. I used to think it was all avatar/zombie drivel but there is a lot of gold to be found. So far I've purchased 10 or so indie games and will be keeping an eye out for future recommendations.

Also, huge thumbs up to Armless Octopus. Between your site and this thread I'm discovering a whole new world for Xbox gaming. :)

You can also play Sequence with a controller. The top 10 links to our full reviews of games. Some of them were done in conjunction with some other sites, and they might not link to the Xbox page. All the reviews that I have up on AO link to the xbox page (or steam, etc.) page at the bottom of the review. Hope that helps! Glad you like the site :)

Held off on getting Cthulhu until I saw the DOTW. Since it does not interest me, getting this game on my Bing Rewards, which has been building up for a little while.
Oh yeah I forgot about Tempura of the Dead. I will so get in on that if it drops.
Tempura is a steal at 240...should be a 400 point game. I doubt if it drops as it looks to be selling quite well.

No problem, I found your site while adding reviews to the recommended list. I figured it would make a good addition to the OP. :)
I decided to track as many of the price changes as I can and just throw the crappy ones under a spoiler-tagged list since there were enough comments wanting a more complete list of discounts.

The Old Spice games should have been free. No discussion. Charging $3 for them was ridiculous. Doritos has been doing the exact same thing for a couple years, but their games are always free. And don't contain in-your-face-ads.
I think this was an experiment to see if they could use indies as way of advertising and get people to buy their ads. Happily, it failed and was mocked by most game review sites.

EDIT: Also, I added only 2 radiangames games to the recommended list in the OP - Crossfire 2 and their latest, Ballistic. Mostly because I'm hoping they come to their senses and do a price drop. For those that don't know, they decided to increase the price of all their games from 80 MSP to 400 back in June.

I'd like to recommend Light's End as an oft-overlooked Indie gem that's worth playing. It's like a 16-bit RPG but based entirely on story, no combat or grinding at all. You control a being that can enter any character's body and take control of them. There are a variety of puzzles, all involving this mechanic, to get the right characters to talk to each other and advance the plot. About 3-5 hours long and absolutely worth the 80 points.

I agree, but then these games would never have been green lighted on XBLA nor could be priced for free given XBLIG's limitations. A number of the games are 240 points because they had to be given the file sizes. Of course, that's changed now, and you've just noted one has lowered its price. Still, having to put up with some obnoxious advertising feels off, but then that's the developer crafting and listing these games, not Old Spice.

It seems the company figured it could try to take advantage of some publicity while shouldering the burden on the developers (ie., not paying Microsoft for an advertisement nor shoring up the cash to ensure professional development as in the Doritos contest). I'm not crazy about that, but the prize certainly enticed enough people to make some games and brand them as such. Wonder if the terms of the contest would allow them to go back and strip the games of these ads with an update, but I doubt any of them would bother with that.

Really glad you started this thread, and thanks for including CBR in the OP as well. I've made my fair attempt to help promote worthwhile XBLIG's, and there really are some good ones out there, but it can be difficult to make your way through the masses of crap.

Somewhat related, anyone who is interested; a fun little kart racer XBLIG called Dirchie Kart has an open PC beta for the sequel. If you want more info on that, check it out here.

A lot of cool games on the list. I put about 5 trials in my que.

The 2 most recent games on there that I liked a lot were lasercat and escape goat. I also bought I,Zombie and Alien Jelly which are pretty good.

2 excellent platform games are Johnny Platform and Johnny Platform saves xmas. A puzzle game by the same guy Upbot goes up is pretty clever. (None of these 3 are on the list)

Protect me Knight and Hidden in Plain sight are pretty unique experiences which are fantastic if you have 4 people in front of your TV. My 65 year old mom was actually curious about Hidden in Plain sight

WWmonkey shared this trailer on the NeoGAF XBLIG thread, for Guncraft.

It's a voxel based shooter, aiming for a release this year from Exacto Games (Progenitor was a submission that just missed the top 10 in the IGSU).

What are your thoughts? I like the fact that it finally offers some diversity to the "craft" scene with shooter elements.

This is a great thread guys. Anything to give more attention to the indies.

Not to rush in here and pimp my own site(but really just to rush in here and pimp my own site), here's a link to my site. We review a wide range of indie games, but most of the focus is on XBLIG. http://www.indietheory.com/

I'm glad somebody else recommended Light's End. A nice throwback title if you're simply looking for a good story. I had originally recommended it here on CAG's blogs, but here's the mini-review on Indie Theory.

I also see Corrupted has been stuck in the Island of Misfit Toys. I don't have a review for it, but I listed that as one of my favorites from 2011. I would definitely say give it a shot. If it's not your thing it's not your thing, but I enjoyed it.

As far as my recommendations go, here are a few that haven't been mentioned.

Decay series - Review
Defy Gravity - Review
Grand Theft Froot - Review
Upbot Goes Up - Review

I also have reviews/mini-reviews for some of the others mentioned. I'm not going to list them, but add the links if you wish. Up to you.

Again, great thread. :)

Thanks very much for this thread. I've been wanting to pick up some Indie games, but really didn't even know where to start. This thread is exactly what I needed.
Anyone playing DLC Quest know how "long" the game is?

It was fun, but if it's just one giant map then... I may just pass on this.
It's about half an hour from start to finish, after you know where everything is you can definitely finish it faster than that. If you've played the demo you've already got the "joke", still I felt it was way worth a dollar.

Other games I've purchased since reading this thread and am enjoying thoroughly: Battle High: San Bruno, Breath of Death VII, Chester, Cthulhu Saves the World, Cursed Loot, Dead Pixels, PLATFORMANCE: Castle Pain, PLATFORMANCE: Temple Death.

Has anyone here played The Deep Cave? I'm a huge "platformer hell" fan and this looks promising.

Been playing "Chester" non stop ever since I purchased it over the weekend.

If you haven't yet...

You should try Aban Hawkins and the 1000 Spikes for only 80 MS Points.

Good and long platforming game, but tough as heck.

Yeah, that one's definitely on my radar. As is Mute Crimson, which from the vids I've seen looks very Super Meat Boy-ish.

I've grabbed a few games just off recommendations in this thread, and plan on purchasing several others after trying out demos. Great thread!

Okay, I've plugged my site a few times but it's time I make a list of recomendations. All the links go to my site where I have a rather in-depth review of the game and an interview with the developer. I recommend every game that I've done an XBLIG Spotlight for, but these are the best of the best:

80 Point Games I recommend
Minions! - Review
Rainbow Runner - Review
Honor in Vengeance II - Review (Short but fun and unique on XBLIG)
Video Wars - Review
Plague - Review (Seriously, one of the best)
Infinity Danger - Review
Cute Things Dying Violently - Review (I'm fairly certain this is our highest rated XBLIG so far)
Flowrider - Review
Fishcraft - Review (Has a sequel now called Angry Fish, guess what game it's like.)
Lair of the Evil Doer - Review (I believe this is the same developer that made DLC quest)

240 Point Games Worth Checking Out
Kobold's Quest - Review (Possibly the best XBLIG on the subject of baby eating)
Dirchie Kart - Review (and as I mentioned before, they have a open PC beta for the sequel at the moment)
Clover - Review (tough at times, but it is our 2nd highest rated XBLIG)

Wanted to suggest Parasitius Ninja Zero. I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. I don't think that it has had a price drop from 240, but I just wanted to let everyone know it's a pretty good side-scroller kind of like the old Ninja Gaidens.

Since I can never find out much about it, can anyone tell me if there is any real reason to get Cursed Loot if I already bought Epic Dungeon?

You can also grab Invasion if you're looking for cheaper (80 points) way to experience Parasitus. It seems to reuse some of the graphics and plays about the same, but most of Invasion feels like an infomercial for Parasitus, even plugging the game in the dialogue. :p

The game I've been trying hard to push on people is NYAN-TECH. It's a simple looking but brilliant, unique platformer which is my personal Game of the Year. You get 40 levels for your 80 points, and the game will amaze you with what it asks you to do with your controller. I can guarantee you've not played anything like it, and I'm rather disappointed it hasn't popped up in any GOTY topics and awards that I've seen. It's a real shame that so many indie sites, a collective which often operates under the banner of championing innovation, has outright ignored NYAN-TECH. It deserves better. If you're a platform fan or wondering where the original concepts have gone, then buy it.
Sorry if this has been answered multiple times before, but are there any decent multiplayer games?
You know, that's a very good question. I know that there are certainly some, but now I want to make a feature on this in order to highlight some of the finest on XBLIG.

Protect me knight and hidden in plain sight for local coop. Maybe shoot1up too.

I usually try out indie games solo, so I don't really know if theres any other great games.

Changes:
 • 1 new playable class (Peasant). The peasant does not have a primary skill, but you get extra awardment points for escaping with him.
 • 24 new awardments. (The awardment screen now has 2 pages, be sure to check the second page!)
 • 9 new weapons. (spiked club, kris, pike, etc., etc., etc.)
 • Slot machines on shop levels (get some points on luck before you try it!)
 • Minor bug fix on the platforming minigame

Just a quick note as to why the name was changed. Due to several legal/business reasons the title needed to be changed and transferred over to Eyehook Games LLC. It would've been great if we could've done this in a way that allowed existing customers to continue to receive updates. Unfortunately, the indie games service does not support this (I tried repeatedly to make it happen, but no luck). So, the only option left was to publish it as a new title. (The choice was this or having nothing at all...) Anyway, I can't go into more detail, but I hope it's enough to give you an idea of what's going on over here.
(And, of course, the old version will continue to work. It is just no longer for sale.)

If you're a fan of Castle Crashers (and most people are, I think it's the biggest-selling XBLA title of all-time), you may want to check out Ninja War: SECRET SCROLLS. Granted, there isn't a shred of originality here and it's basically CC with ninja instead of knights, but if you enjoy that style of multi-player co-op action you may enjoy this for a buck.

Also, Dead Pixels.

Just bought DLC Quest because of the hilarious concept, and Cthulhu since I loved Breath of Death VII. (If the developers are reading this, the moment that got me to buy BoD VII was talking to the shopkeeper.)

Added a bunch more to my queue and will try them if I ever get time.

The typical problem with multiplayer games on XBLIG (besides the extra effort it is for the developers who ultimately plan to charge $1 for the game) is that most games don't have a big enough audience, playing regularly enough to have spur of the moment matchmaking. In other words, the games that do have multiplayer components basically require you to have several friends who have bought it to ever get an online game going. I know the developer of Astro Cluster used to try and get a weekly game going (but I always missed them cause I'm typically not available on Sunday nights).

Thanks OP and everyone for recommending good games. I picked up:

Cursed Loot
Hidden in Plain Sight
Cthulhu Saves the World
Miasma
Bloody Checkers
DLC Quest

I went looking for Rickenbacker vs the Aliens, but it isn't on the list. Did its name get changed or something?

From what I can tell after a google search, it was supposed to be part of the XBLIG Winter Uprising in 2010, but it kept being delayed and was never released.

On my podcast we typically play an indie for every show. On the latest we played Lots of Guns(XBLIG, sort of like Rocket Riot sans flying)and Abobo's Big Adventure which isn't on XBLIG but is awesome in its own right. It can be challenging to get people to stop ignoring XBLIGs but many see that there are quite a few gems there. BTW Anyone up for some Take Arms?

I'd also recommend:
Cute Things Dying Violently
VolChaos
3D-struction
Firing Range
EscapeGoat
Wizorb
The Fall of the gods
Apex
Dead Pixels

Good stuff there. Fall of Gods just dropped to $1 today. That one's been on my want list for a while.

Epic D was one of the only Indie games I really liked a lot, so i'll support Cursed Loot by downloading it soon.
:)

I tried 1000 Spikes and Escape Goat tonight and ended up buying both. 1000 Spikes is really kind of infuriatingly difficult, but also satisfying when you finish a level. I finished the first 2 and then had to stop after falling at the 3rd several times. Needed a break! :) So then tried Escape Goat and liked that a lot. It was a bit pricier at 240 and truth be told I didn't notice the higher price until I'd already clicked Buy. LOL. I hope it doesn't drop to 80 now. I'm sure it will. Still it seems worth it.

I also just tried Wizorb. While I like the concept a lot, I'm not really enjoying playing an Arkanoid-type game with an analog stick. The game would be awesome on a touchscreen (mobile) so I hope the dev brings it to iOS (or your favorite flavor).

Definitely wondering this myself. It's hard to find decent multiplayer games these days, so I'm hoping there are some indie ones to help fill the void, as my girlfriend is more of a casual gamer but loves playing through co-op.

We're playing through Dead Pixels now and it's definitely awesome, I also am eager to try Hidden in Plain Sight and Ninja War: Stolen Scrolls. Any other suggestions? I know there's a pretty good list on the main page at this point, but they don't mention multiplayer capabilities.
