XBLIG Price Drops

CAGiversary!

Since Microsoft recently changed their pricing structure for Xbox Indies, larger games can can now be sold for 80 MSP. As a result, many XBLIG devs have opted to drop the price of their games. I thought it would be pretty cool to have a thread that would try to track what WORTHWHILE games are now cheaper.

DISCLAIMER: Yes, I know that Xbox Indies is a largely horrifying wasteland of shovelware and absolute garbage like "Avatar Zombie Massager" and "Look I Made a One Level Platformer with MS Paint!!!". (There's really no need to elaborate on it further, we all know this.) But there ARE some good games in the pile. And I'd like to keep the thread focused on those, if possible.

DISCLAIMER 2 (The More Important One):
Xbox Live Indie Games require an internet connection to start the game. It doesn't matter if you have a Silver (Free) or Gold account, just that the Xbox is connected to the internet. Again, this is only to start the game; once the game is running you can disconnect your Xbox, but not sign out of your profile.

Make that five.

Anyways... big ups to the vamn for his help with this.. I have been picking up a few of these and would have not if you didn't put the work into this thread.

Thanks again

Must be mad your massage game didn't sell.

Looks like I'm getting a game since I have 90 points left over.

I am alll for supporting indie game developers, even if their games are more than 80 pts. I've already downloaded all of the OP's mentioned titles long ago and even though I spent more for those titles, they are totally worth the prices I paid.

Darn this thread for making me spend points on fun games I would have never even looked at! Just picked up Revolver. I also thoroughly enjoyed Breath of Death/Cthulhu on PC. They're fun 8-bit-styled self-aware turn-based RPGs. You can't go wrong with them for these prices.

Man, I have been on an indie kick lately. Anyway, I noticed EXPLOSIONADE dropped to 80 pts. Its a really good game - very high quality. Escape Goat demo is great and I will pick it up in February.

I'm pretty sure Explosionade was always 80 points since I own it and I don't buy the 240 point games. I agree that it is pretty good though.

I'd like to toss my opinion out there for what to do with the price drops for not-so-great games. I think the spoiler tag that was mentioned earlier would be a good solution. By doing that, the good games are immediately visible and the other games are there for the more devoted XBLIG followers.

I would definitely like a complete list of what has dropped because everyone has different tastes. For example I thought that Karn-Age was somewhat fun but with your current rules I never would have known that it dropped in price just by looking at the first post.

I'll add a spoiler-tagged list of the less noteworthy XBLIG titles in a bit.

Also, it looks like the poll has spoken and I'll be adding a recommended games list, too. Just as soon as I can flag down a mod to answer a couple questions for me. - Which is a lot harder to do than it should be... :/

Raventhorne (was 240msp): Review

Note: Even though this was a summer uprising title, Raventhorne didn't receive the best reviews.
The review I linked to (Two Fedoras) amended their original article after the dev addressed some of the games issues and updated the title. If you don't want to read the entire thing, I would at least read the amended section in red if you are interested in this game.
This Fishing Girl?
Yup that's the one. I went ahead and bought it again since I couldn't find it in my purchase history. Then after searching online there's a free version of the game online. A buck is good but free is better.

Thanks, added to the OP under "The Rest", though, which I hate to do for an Indie Uprising title. But based on that review and some others, it seems like it's art was the only thing it had going for it, even after the patch.
Anyone else care to weigh in?

It was pretty terrible when I played it before the update. I haven't tried it since then. I doubt that it has improved enough to compare it to the good games on the first post but who knows...

The first post is looking pretty good now. The only thing I would suggest at this point is that you list the games by the date that you added them to the list rather than alphabetically. Obviously it isn't a big deal right now since the thread is still new, but once there are a lot of entries it will be hard to look through them all and figure out if anything has changed. It would be much easier to simply look at the top or bottom of the list for the most recent change.

To anyone interested, my site has a regular column (haven't had one in a couple of weeks but will be starting again soon, called the XBLIG Spotlight where I highlight above average XBLIGs including a review and an interview with the developer. Direct Link. I've done quite a few so there is plenty to check out, haven't taken the time to see if any of them have dropped in price though.

Ok, added Clearance Bin Review to the OP as a review site.

ANd I'll see how best to organize the games in a few weeks - either by date or keeping it alphabetical with a "new this month" list above it.
OP updated... lemme know what you think: Too cluttered? Good? Missing something?
Looks good to me via mobile. The island of misfit toys heading is great in my book!

I saw that you added a recommended game section and I would just like to say that Total Miner: Forge is really fun online and with friends and it is at 240 points, while both ZP2K9 and ZP2KX: Zombies & Pterodactyls are probably my two favorite indie games out and they both launched at only 80 points, they both also have online modes and if there aren't any people on you can fill the slots with bots, the game has a lot of custom options you can set for modes and characters and such, you all should at least give the trial a go!
OP updated... lemme know what you think: Too cluttered? Good? Missing something?
It looks great how it is, the categories are all laid out nicely!

Thanks for the recommendations! I picked up Cthulu Saves the World (great game, I am enjoying it way more then FF13), Breath of Death VII and DLC Quest.
Should we only be recommending/noting 80MSP games?
Nope. You recommend any game you think is good, as long as it's worth the price. There are more 80 MSP games on list because we're all cheap ass gamers, aren't we?

Looking up some reviews and adding these to the OP.

Total Miner seems to get a lot of hate just because people see it as a "rip-off" of Minecraft. So it's hard to find an unbiased review.
I wonder how well it'll stack up once Minecraft comes out for XBLA?

My brother has spent probably 30 hours in total minor, he really enjoys it, and from what I've played I'd recommend it as well.

Good stuff all around. I'll add the rest to the OP later.

I'm already thinking that the recommended list should have some categories (Shooter, RPG, Tower Defense, etc.), but some games are hard to classify... Dunno.

Yeah I have heard that, however there are a good amount of differences between the two, and there are a lot of online games up on total miner which makes it fun to see all of the different worlds. And while some people may just skip over it due to the similarities to Minecraft for only three bucks you can't go wrong, especially with all the free updates they put out.

Here's a video review I found a while back when looking for information on all the Minecraft-inspired XBLIG games (my kids wanted to play Minecraft). They compare CastleMiner, FortressCraft, and Total Miner Forge.

http://www.zam.com/bffreport.html?bffreport=80

Eventually, I just downloaded trial versions of each and the kids decided they liked TMF the best.

Glad to see Escape Goat on the list. I hope it does drop because it's a fun game.

I would also recommend Soul and Train Frontier Express. Not sure if they have dropped at all but both entertaining games.

Some of these may be a bit obvious/popular already, but I'll recommend them anyway since I love to see an XBLIG thread. It's hard to sift out the good ones.

Not all of the games are going to be to everyone's tastes, that's pretty much a given. But I'm sure everyone can find something here.

I figure that a list of about 30+ CAG-recommended games with categories and reviews is much, much better than Microsoft's unsorted pile 2357 xbox indies (not making that number up, by the way.)

Hate what they did with the Indie games with the new dashboard...sigh...I like how they make use either scroll through all of them or use "Bing Search" to find it.

Bloody Checkers (Review) and LaserCat (Review) are two other great games that released this year. Both 80 points.

Bloody Checkers has 30+ hours of story gameplay and is my favorite Indie game to play right now...thought I saw it listed previously, but I guess not.
Wonder if Wizorb will drop?
I'd be willing to bet a lot of the 240 MSP games will drop eventually. It's just a matter of when.

I was looking at Evilquest a few days ago when picking up Soulcaster and Cthulhu, I downloaded the demo but haven't tried it yet. Looks like fun.

I really like XBLIG andnever saw it as a wasteland. There are some real gems to be picked up there and a wonderful community to discover to share your opinions with.

I would suggest anything by Radiangames: Crossfire 1 & 2, Fluid, Fireball and Inferno are great games but on the pricey side for an indie game (the quality is there).

Love that this post turned into something cool. :) :bouncy:
Does anyone else think MS should do a IDOTW (Indie Deal of the Week). Granted 80-400 ms points is not a lot, but it would also advertise and get more notarity which is needed. Especially for these great titles that can be overshadowed with garbage.

More suggestions:

Platformer:
Aban Hawkins & the 1000 SPIKES - 80 MSP
"Aban Hawkins & the 1000 SPIKES" is an 8-bit retro style Hardest Extremest Craziest Platform Action Puzzle Adventure. Simple & intuitive rules. Elaborate level design. Various fierce traps, traps, traps! Return to the Golden Years of Video Game. No one can BEAT this game...except YOU!! This is another, more elaborate "FUUUU~ this game is HAAARD" types of games, just like the Platformance series.
Akane the Kunoichi - 80 MSP
You are Akane, a Kunoichi ninja secretly loving her master Goro, a noble samurai. One day Goro is kidnapped by the evil Hiromi and her minions – you have to rescue him, but it won't be an easy task! Many enemies will try to stop you, and you'll have to be brave to fight against the evil ninjas and huge monsters loyal to Hiromi. The levels get more difficult as you progress, although the enemies do not. There are some hardcore boss fights.
Arkedo Series - 03 PIXEL! - 240 MSP
"MORE BLUE" : Arkedo/Pastagames' answer to Avatar. Basically, you play as an adventure-seeking, normal cat. There might be a story here, but I forgot. What's important is that the platforming is fun and challenging. There's a spyglass that freezes the game while you look for hidden items in regular blocks. Once you find one, you play something like a maze minigame to unlock it. It's pretty quirky and random, but it's worth at least a demo.
Lumi - 240 MSP
Lumi, the 2010 DreamBuildPlay winner is an action/puzzle/platform game, in a marvelous 2D universe. You control Lumi, a small creature with powers based on magnetism and light, and with the goal to save the universe sunk into darkness. Gorgeous, hand-drawn scenery make this worth 240 MSP.
PLATFORMANCE - Temple Death - 80 MSP
While filming her latest movie, famous starlet Grace Belly gets abducted by a sect of evil savages. You decide to go and rescue her down the 'Temple Death'- a place filled with evil traps where only the fools can survive. --Warning: Fun platformer ahead! Contains lots of deadly traps, scoreboards, rewards, flopwards, 3 difficulty modes. Can you finish the Insane mode?!? Much better than the original, with much more to offer. The story and rewards are pretty hilarious.
The TEMPURA of the DEAD - 240MSP
The TEMPURA of the DEAD is a simple & exhilarating 8bit style 2D platformer & shooter. Switch between two unique characters -PRESIDENT TOMPSON and SAMURAI SUGIMOTO- and beat the zombies. Juggle the zombie's head to increase the extra life! You must find all GERMS of Calamity, and exterminate them to restore peace. Play it for the ridiculousness and the 50+ of tight NES-style platforming.

Puzzle:
GREEN ISLAND - 80 MSP
This one is by the same foreign puzzle masters that brought us the Kaiten Patissier games. This time, you have a bubble gun that you must shoot around a wind-blown island to create pathways to the exit. You can also collect items along the way to increase your score.

RPG
Bonded Realities - 80 MSP
Enjoy an unpredictable, wacky adventure in this turn-based RPG! Crisp graphics, quality music, hilarious dialogue and ridiculous enemies are some of the things that await you in a title that brings the classic gameplay of 8- and 16-bit RPGs into an updated look and feel! I've heard a lot of people describe this as Earthbound lite. Despite its MSPaint graphics, it's really good for only a buck.

Shooter:
Hypership Out of Control - 80 MSP
Space is a dangerous placed for even the most seasoned starship pilot, full of asteroids, multicolored floating blocks, and space mines. It's even more dangerous when your accelerator is stuck to the floor and your brakes are out. Can you survive long enough to get that elusive high score or are you destined to add a new crater to the face of an unsuspecting asteroid? This game is different from normal shooters in that you are constantly speeding up, making objects harder and harder to miss. There are tons of extra modes, four player support, and even achievements.
Score Rush - 80 MSP
SCORE RUSH is a 4-player shoot ’em up. Features overwhelming firepower, trailing options, full screen bombs, tons of enemies, with an intimidating final boss and hundreds of crazy bullet patterns to survive. The 60 fps adrenaline-rush experience is complemented by a hard-rocking DRAGON MUSIC soundtrack. Designed by XONA GAMES “empower the player” philosophy. Uses award-winning DUALITY ZF engine. This is one of the hardest and fastest shmups I've ever played. At 60 frames per second, there's so much bullet hell that your eyes will bleed. It is THE XBIG shmup that you MUST own.

I highly recommend all of these.

^Agreed. Some great picks. Score Rush is AWESOME! Check it out.

I have one more to add to the list that I haven't seen mentioned... Apple Jack.

Great puzzle platformer with a very rewarding combo system. Great fun!

Keep your eyes peeled for Apple Jack 2 which should be coming out within the next few months. Screens here: http://myowlsoftware.blogspot.com/

Also Vorpal 2 should be coming out early this year. Vorpal was great, so I expect nothing less from Vorpal 2.
