Xbox 360 Component Cables with a non-HDTV?

Sorry I will probably be laughed at for such a newbish question, but do you have to have a HDTV to use the component cables? Here's my problem: I have a nice TV (not HDTV but EDTV) with component inputs and I love them -- they work great and provide a much better picture than composite. However, my TV does not support progressive scan and as I said it's not HDTV. The 360 only lets you choose between 480p, 720p, and 1080i -- all of which my TV doesn't support. :( Is there any way I can use component cables with my TV? Or will I be forced to go with lower quality S-Video cables? In other words, my PS2 can use component cables just fine with my TV so is there anyway for the 360 to do so as well? Thanks!

I was always under the impression that EDTV is essentially 480p. So if you really have a true EDTV, then it should support progressive scan.

First of all, if your TV does not support 480p then it is not an EDTV.

To answer your question, yes, you can use component cables on a regular TV. You just need to slide that switch on the AV cable that connects to your 360.

Sorry, I should have put that in quotes because that's what it was supposed to be. ;)

That's the rumor, people I've talked to say the Monster cables won't work on SD component inputs. We've had a few brought back to the store because of it. If you can I'd just take the Mosnter ones back and exchange them for some that have the HDTV - SDTV switch on it. I use VGA now, but when I used the offical MS component ones (this was an HDTV) they worked like a charm and should have that switch on them.

Just use the cable that came with the Xbox... unless ya got the Core which only comes with the crappy composite (red,yellow,white) cable.

Even if your TV isn't HD you can still use the component cable and it will make a big difference compared to playing with the composite cable.

SD == standard?

And I know the official MS cable has the switch so is that what you'd recommend? Just swap them for the official MS ones?

And thanks for the advice...I think I will either exchange them or maybe swap them with somebody....

YEah SD = Standard Definition. But yep, I' just swap them out for the MS ones. The quality of them is fine and this way you know that you should be getting what you need.

I'm using the official MS component cables on a non HDTV and it works fine. Just like the others have said, flip the switch.

Well unlike some people I do read stickies but my question wasn't answered in the FAQs/sticky so that's why I started a new thread since this seems to be a "anything about Xbox" forum. ;)

Um yeah, but some of us are trying to keep the threads clean and your question could have been asked on the link. The thread its not just a simple FAQ, its an ongoing thread where people ask questions about X360 hardware, accessories, connectivity and so on.
