Xbox 360 or PS3

Gamenads

CAGiversary!
I want to get a next gen console and I cant decide between the two theres the PS3 40gb which is $399 then theres the Xbox 360 Pro which is $349, I do play online. Give me some advice please.

Look at the few exclusives each has and decide from there.

As far as online gaming goes LIVE is better than PSN, but that's not saying PSN is bad by any means.

Here's my point of view:

PS3 - Not too expensive anymore, a more powerful system, 2 games that I'd like to play that are exclusive to the PS3, NO games that I MUST buy, only MGS4 on the immediate horizon that I'm interested in.

Xbox 360 - I've had it 4 months and I own 10 games, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Gears of War, tons of great games on the way, it is cheaper (but you'll need a way to get online, which could cost money), xbox live is freaking awesome, achievements are freaking cool.

I LOVE the 360. I'm not a snob, i've owned all the systems in the past. There just isn't anything that I want to play on the PS3 that I can't get for the 360.

The only catch is the blu ray player with the PS3. If that's a big deal to you, you can't get a better deal for a blu ray player.

Ps3, but that's based on my tastes. I actually have both systems.

You haven't given me enough information to go on.

There isn't really a better system. Well technically ps3 is better because it won't break down on yuh so easily, but gamewise it's up to you to decide which is better for you.

I think I am the only one that enjoys ps3 online more than xbox live. The main reason's are of course it is free, and I haven't had anyone cuss me out over psn like some stupid people do on xbox live. I own the ps3,wii, and 360. There is stuff about each one I like and dislike. You should't listen to people that play favorites you should look into the games each console has and decide which you like better.

All depends on what you're into...

Since you're not looking at the higher end versions, the one's in your range are 40gb PS3 w/ bluray and 20gb 360...then again the 360 has a more developed library and better online (you have to pay for live, but if you search it won't be over $30-$35)

I still don't own either of them but I'm leaning towards a 360 as GTAIV is getting extra content on the 360 (in free episodes? ...can't remember exactly) and most of my friends have a 360 too.

If you care about online I would go with xbox 360. Most people on psn don't use headset so it feels like you're playing bots most of the time

Yeah, don't listen to this guy if you want a next-gen system. I tried to tell myself that the Wii was the coolest thing for a year. Then I played a 360. It's my personal taste and I feel burned by Nintendo, but I HATE the Wii. I only keep it because my two year old likes to play around with Wii Sports (and Zelda TP was good).

Just shows that we all have very different opinions.

I have all 3 current gen consoles, and the Wii is my favorite.

Why you say?

Well that's because of two little games named Super Mario Galaxy and and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Well the thing about the 360 that bothers me is that it does not come with the online wireless adapter and my HD TV is downstairs away from my router, but the games I Want pretty much are for both systems.

ps3 is safer since it doesn't have the rrod. However, xbl is better than the PSN, but you gotta pay for it and going wireless online isn't cheap. I bought the ps3 for metal gear solid 4, so if you have a preference in which exclusives you want to play pick that console. But most games are available for both consoles as well as PC.

hmm thats exactly the opposite of my experience. I've played the ps3 and xbox 360 online and I was cussed out on cod4 because I didn't have a mic for the ps3 version. Ridiculous, yes, but he got owned in the cage match ;). Of course there are jerks on the xbl as well, they have made stupid comments but nothing as offensive as the arsehole's comments in cod4.

Just get whichever has the most exclusives that interest you, and factor in X-box live as well if you do a lot of online gaming.

its nice to see this thread full of posts aiming to give the OP some actualy help instead of bashing everything.
i think nearly everything has been covered so fr with the exception of the controller. hold each of them, i personally do not like the ps3 controller, it just doesnt feel right to me, especially for shooters.

that said im probably going to buy the mgs4 bundle.

I just bought a PS3 about 4 days ago. I had a 360 at one point but only for a little bit.

My reasons for buying the PS3 were:

1. Games - yes 360 has more now but the older stuff Im not real interested in. Im real interested in Ratchet, Jak and Sly, so PS3 for me.

2. Not having to buy that $99 wireless thing for the 360 to get online.

3. Blu-Ray - probably won't be using it for awhile but I would rather have it than not have it.

Also, the Red Ring really somewhat scared me from buying the 360 (though even without that issue I think I would have gone PS3). Now that there really is no difference in cost, I felt the PS3 was the better purchase.

Go for the system that has the games that interest you. If you are interested in MGS4 at all, there will be the $500 80GB PS3 that comes with MGS4 so you might want to keep that in mind.

Besides that, LIVE is better than PSN, but that doesn't mean PSN is bad at all, it works well especially considering it's free.

Doesn't cost $99 to get on wirelessly. By a wireless bridge from Linksys. I've seen them go for $20-30.

You get more for your money if you were to buy the PS3. Reliability, quality, free online, and there's good games all over to play and good games coming on the horizon. If you get the PS3first you can always go back and get the 360 when its even more cheaper than it is now.
THe main thing about the PS3 is that you can upgrade the drive... cheaply.. so if you max out the 40gb or 80gb.. you can go and get a 160, 250gb... etc. No proprietary drives, plus the old drives can ben encased in a enclosure and still be used with the system.

Being that everything is cheaper on the Wii, if you avoid the shovelware garbage, it's a far better bang for the buck than either of the other systems.

Unless you're looking for a home media system / Blu-Ray player. In which case, get a PS3.

Basically quality beats quantity. And Wii is definitely quality, it saddens me that some people only see 360 and ps3 as the only hardcore systems.

That's not to say that everything on the 360 is crap; hardly! But the polish Nintendo puts into their titles, and some third party stuff like RE4Wii, is unmatched on the other systems, even with HD visuals.

The exception is perhaps the ungimped version of Rock Band. That's far superior on the 360/PS3 than it will be on the Wii. But as far as console exclusives, the Wii wins.

Are you saying that I can use any wireless adapter on the 360 because I have a belkin wireless adapter.

i disagree about zelda, mario, and metroid being better than anything on the ps3 or 360, but i also dont care for the nintendo games anymore (grew out of the after the n64). the wii controller is terrible at best for me, but i prefer a real controller, not something i have to aim at a sensor bar myself and the best game on that system is still wii sports which comes with the thing. i have played all of them and didn't care for them or SSBB, but this is my preference on games anyways.

i will also disagree with the ps3 online being any good... it is decent at best. the best quality of their online is so many people dont have headsets that you dont have to hear the little kids screaming in the headset for even a few seconds. playstation doesn't have any exclusives i would be interested in... i don't care for stealth games or rpgs either, so the games are lacking for me as well on that system. now it does have the blu-ray player and the chances of failure of the system are far less than the 360 as well.

the 360 is great for online gaming, decent for single player gaming (i wouldn't say good), and gets almost every game the ps3 does, but the same can be said the other way around as well. if you are planning to go wireless online, than you may as well stick with a ps3 and its wi-fi, because all my friends that have gone wireless on the 360 have trouble connecting to rooms, hearing each other, and their lag is bad compared to everyone that is hard-wired, so they get delayed reaction time.
will the ps3 get lag if it goes wireless?
What do you mean by wireless, lol?

You don't need an adapter for online if that's what you mean. Unlike the 360 just having a router is all you need, and it works great IMO.

First off I asked if you can use any wireless adapter on a 360 ex. belkin wirless adapter which is used on laptops?
Second the ps3 has it built in so If I play online will I get any lag.

I don't know much about the 360 question, I just hook mine straight to the router.

As for ps3 I've never experienced any noticeable lag with my wireless router connection, and no one's complained. So no worries there. ;)

I agree with many points above. The Wii does have the best exclusives in my book. Xbox Live is totally sweet, and the PS3 is a fantastic media hub for your living room. I love all three (although I still play my older machines quite a bit more than the new ones, esp my Saturn and DC). If was to only choose one, however, I would choose PS3. Granted, right now, it has the fewest killer new titles. Also, the online is not as good as XBL. On the other hand:

1) I really think there will be PS3 games still coming out in 7 years. I highly doubt there will be 360 games still coming out in 4.
2) Blu-ray is awesome.
3) Backward compatibility means PS3 has the best library ever in the history of the world. (Well, Wii + VC could be argued also)
4) Wi-fi is super handy.
5) It's not much more cash.
6) Reliability.
7) Free online play is pretty nice, although I do pay the $50/yr for XBL and love it.
8) If you have a PSP, they really are doing some pretty cool stuff as far as the connectivity of the two.

Of course, my answer would be different if you were buying a console to have for the next year or two (although I am not sure whether it would be Wii or 360). But if I was only planning on having one for the next 4-5+ years, I would choose the PS3.

The whole wii discussion boils down to taste in gaming. I LOVED the Nintendo staples for years. I was devoted to all things Nintendo and stuck with them through the N64 and so on. I actually really really like the Gamecube and have a ton of games for it. But, the Wii really is just a cube with a motion sensing controller. I'm sick of menus, warnings, and 'eh' graphics. My personal taste has led me to the 360 and I haven't had this much fun with games in YEARS.

I am working on a plan to get a PS3, but that is only for MGS4 and the hope that FF13 is good (and coming out before 2011), other than that, there aren't any PS3 exclusives that interest me at this point (but I really love the MGS franchise).

If I had to pick one, i'd go with the 360. Plus, don't let the reliability/rrod thing scare you off. Just get a newer system and keep it ventilated, you'll be fine.

If I could only go with one console this generation it would be the Wii since I love Nintendo games, and I have a pretty good PC, so I would be able to play 90% of Xbox 360/PS3 games I would be interested in on the PC, vs almost no Wii games on the PC.

Of course for someone who doesn't have a good PC and/or doesn't really like Nintendo games the 360 or PS3 would be a better way to go.

why does everyone put the "media hub" reasoning behind the PS3? My xbox 360 is on the network with my pc and using media player 11 I can stream almost anything to my 360 (movies, pictures, music)....if you have media center (like me) you can even listen to satellite radio on the damn thing

i do this as well with mine, so i dont understand the media hub thing either. also, this guy said ps3 or 360, not wii, so i don't really see why it is being mentioned in here. also, he said he does a lot of online gaming which the wii is terrible for (argue all you want, but when a room of 4 people lags, i find that to be pathetic). i noticed a big difference in the online between the ps3 and the 360, but i also did it right away. i was playing call of duty 4 on my 360 and went to tell my brother something from the game... he was playing call of duty 4 on the ps3 and since half his team (including him were new) and he was getting annoyed, i offered to help push them back. the hit detection seemed delayed by at least a second or two, which is like when i connect to an asain (literally over in asia, no offense intended by the way) host over xbox live.

i personally would rather pay for xbox live and have great service (friends list, mute options, submitting feedback on annoying players) and having all the same games that are on the ps3 that i care to play anyways. really it all boils down to your preference of games though... i am a huge fan of online shooters (first or third) and xbox has those games.

It depends on the servers used for the game by the developers. It varies from game to game on the PS3 A LOT MORE than it does for the 360. CoD 4 and Resistance are fine, but Rainbox Six Vegas 2 and MLB The Show 08 are pretty much worthless trying to play online right now because of server issues and lag.

My two systems are the 360 and PS3 and while I like them both I think the 360 has the superior selection and online presence. You can check my collection for many of the best titles on both systems either for their quality or their quality-to-cost ratio (See Bullet Witch, Project Sylpheed, The Darkness, and Splinter Cell for $8-$15 each.)

Get a 360 if you care about online play. If you dont you may prefer the PS3 because of Blu Ray and not fearing the death of your console every time you hit a bug in the game.

Yeah, but he didn't list the Wii as an option he was considering, so kind of pointless to mention it.

I'd been a long Nintendo fan, and bought the Wii day one but it pretty much killed any interest I have left in Nintendo. Sick of their franchises, can't stand gaming in standard def, online system sucks, didn't dig motion controls despite thinking I would, my tastes have move more toward FPS games etc. etc. Nintendo just isn't for me any more, and aparrently not what the OP is looking for either.

Thankfully Vegas 2 is fixed now.

I'd go with PS3 (for many reasons), just because it's the console which looks to have the most console exclusives in the future, awesome hardware, and pretty good online for free. CAG also has a pretty good PSN community which is relatively close. PS3 is also a lot of bang for your buck, and has some great games/graphics. 360 is an awesome platform too and I like mine, but would choose PS3 if I could only keep one (and IMO, I rather stick with PSN (which is just as good as XBL for what I use) and I don't have to pay)).

Neither to me are the greatest though and still need to grow more.

Where would the best walk-throughguide for this be? Is it pretty simple to set up? I was going to build a new MMC pc but not xure now.
TIA

I've been weighing the pros and cons of each system since the 2nd full trailer of GTA4 came out and right now I'm leaning more towards a ps3. Here's why:

When I play online, it's usually a pc game so the free online (even if it isn't as good) is more appealing.

The rrod is a big deterrent for me. I would hate to be getting into gta4 and have the machine crap out on me. Surprising because I always expect the Sony hardware to be the most volatile. I wonder why they can't be like Nintendo and just make hardware you can't kill, even with high yield explosives.

I have a psp and some of the future prospects of linking the two up (like movie transfers) sound very promising.

The recent purchase of an HDTV (at a Sears closeout) makes the blueray more appealing.

It looks like it's going to have more of my kind of (trippy) games: LB Planet, Echochrome. Katamari was one of the reasons I got a ps2.

Lastly: Any DLC for the 360 version of GTA4 will probably end up on the eventual pc version either as an expansion pack or a mod.

Excellent, we've not had this topic for a while and it always ends well, isn't it about time someone started a thread about MGS4 coming to the 360 ?

It really depends on what system exclusives you prefer and if you're in the market for a Blu-Ray player. Also look at what machines your friends have, if you're thinking about online play.
Are you saying that I can use any wireless adapter on the 360 because I have a belkin wireless adapter.
I am not sure if the Belkin adapter will work there are only certain ones that do. Doing a quick search will give you an idea of which ones work and how difficult it would be to set up.

Go with the better bang for your buck... the PS3. I say this from experience as I have both a 360 and a PS3. I've blown $100 on a 20GB HDD, $100 on a wireless adapter, $50 for a vga cable, and $40 for XBox Live (thats only 3 months!!!) all on the 360. Now I wish I didn't spend any of that now that I have a PS3 because it all came included. Microsoft suckers you in by making you pay for extras.

If you game on PC, almost every title exclusive to the 360 has been released on PC as well.

Like mentioned, see what games have been/will be released for both and choose accordingly.

Last, I have used the PS3 wirelessly and can confirm that it runs online without lag. However, the distance between my PS3 and router is shorter then yours as they're both in the same room. Also be mindful that the PS3's wireless has problems with certain versions of the Linksys wrt54g's, however this can be fixed by either turning off media sharing on the PS3 or simply updating the router's firmware.

do you even look at this site?

i've purchased 2 20GB HDD's at $25 each from kmart

ive seen the wireless adapter on sale many places from $40-$60, not to mention if you do a tad bit of research you will find out other, much cheaper, wireless adapters work fine

the official MS VGA cables are $20 at TRU

a year of XBL can be easily had for $20-$30 and cheaper
