XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

I got my xbox back in june. Ever sence I got it back I have been having problems with it like i cant turn it on using the power button, my camera wont load up, and more. I called them up right after I got it back but they said I would have to pay to get it fixed. I was thinking of telling them I have the rrod again even though I dont have it. What will they do if they find out if I dont have it or will they find out?

Call them back and have them fix your 360, all units sent from the repair center come with a 90 day warranty. Ask to talk to a supervisor and remember to keep on asking to talk to someone higher until they start kissing your ass if they keep on refusing.

About to pick up an Elite to replace my Pro and was wondering if there have been any further revisions to the hardware? My local BB has a couple manufactured in Feb '08 and the rest are from May '08. I can't see anything else to tell what type of system it may be. Anyway to tell which would be a better unit? Thanks!

Feb and Moy '08 should both have the Falcon chip sets, the Jaspers won't be out for another 1-3 months.

Should I just wait for the Jaspers? How reliable are the Falcons? My launch 360 still works fine, but the every so often the drive sounds like a helicopter just landed in my living room. Is that any indication that my unit may fail?
 
Wait as long as you can to buy a new 360 because you won't see Jaspers for a while ( there are still Falcons left ). Falcons can still get RROD within the same time frame as a plain 360 so you might as well just wait.
 
So when your system eventually RRoDs again (or just breaks) and it's OUT of warranty, what are you all going to do?

I personally think I'm going to be done with the Xbox. This is the first time I EVER had a system break (between console AND portable) and I just think this whole thing is really tacky. I don't think there should be a warranty at ALL, considering that they are ALL breaking. The warranty SHOULD end when Microsoft announces they are no longer producing the Xbox360 because they are fully supporting whatever their new system at the time is.

I just know WHEN my system RRoDs again when it's out of warranty, there is no way in hell I am paying for it to be fixed. ESPECIALLY if it's like $100 or more! I'd be cool with like.. $10
 
Just wait til a big time developer says "We are no longer going to be producing our products on a platform that breaks down every 3 to 6 months making it impossible for our customers to enjoy our games.."

I wonder how many of the developers machines RRoD during a product development? How does MS respond to that? Do they send them a new unit over night ?

Hopefully by then the next Xbox will be out and fully BC or we have a $100 reliable 360. I won't pay to get my Zephyr fixed out of warranty as I have only had it for 11 months before it totally crapped out today.
 
Don't count on it, the original Xbox is the first console to ever break for me.

That includes my launch PS2, NES, SNES, etc.

Microsoft sucks at making consoles, they are awesome but are built like shit. China > Mexico in build quality. :lol:
 
This is the first console that I have lost in my 30 years since my parents got a Pong system (that still works, btw). Pisses me off because I treat my stuff with kid gloves and it hasn't gotten more than 15 hours a week play time in the eleven months I have had it.

Well I called UPS and they said that someone needed to sign for the package in person so I stuck around on Friday for it to arrive. The driver dropped it off and said that if I wasn't there they sometimes have a neighbor sign for it and leave it there.

As for the system, to my surprise they sent me back the same console. It has worked without any issues so far but I haven't really played it a bunch. It also appears they have switched out the DVD tray, which was hit or miss when I tried to open it. Also it has the refurbished sticker on it when I take the faceplate off.
 
Just a quick note, The UPS Store just received updated OS for their computers - when you drop a package off, it automatically prints out a receipt. Never let them tell you they don't give them out - if they scan it, you get one.

I doubt we will see a under 200 dollar 360 with a hard drive anytime soon.

Exactly. The one bright spot in this whole RROD mess is the removable hard drive. There's no way people would have put up with this shit if they lost all their saves and what not off the hard drive if it was internal. MS would definitely be bringing up the rear had they not had the foresight to have an external drive.

Well although it's a small possibility, your 360 can Red Ring AND have a hard drive crash in the same time frame. How do I know this? That's how my first 360 died. First the hard drive crashed then it red ringed.

But yea it's nice to have a removable hard drive, but it would be nicer if MS releases an expansion *shell* where one can put there own hard drive in, instead of giving us only 20, 60 and 120 gigs to play with.
 
Of course in a perfect world they would let us add our own hard drive. Between that or a locked internal drive ala the original Xbox, a removable external is a nice middle ground.

I had an original xbox fail on me. Lost all my saves. Truly sucks.

My timeline:

TOD & Call for repair: 7/22
Coffin Arrival and 360 sent on: 7/28
Arrived and 'Waiting for device at service center' phase: 7/29
'Device received at service center' phase: 8/4
'Device shipped to customer': 8/5

So roughly two and a half weeks once it arrives. My service page isn't showing a serial number. I guess that has changed?

I bragged on the refurb I got back to soon. It hasn't red ringed,but A disc started making a really weird grinding noise, and now every disc I put in it says it is unreadable :bomb: I just called now I get to play the waiting game again. I didn't even have the 360 a month this time... =/

I'm glad my Persona 3: FES has kept me busy, because the service REP fucked up.
I was supposed to receive a coffin but it was over 7 business days, so I gave them a call and according to the CSR I was supposed to received a pre-paid label in my e-mail adress, when they told me something different :\ So Now I'm having them "rush order" me a box to sent to my adress. Making my time a good 2-3 weeks just to receive a box and send them it. Lovely.

Got my first RROD on my Zephyr today. I was already on my second console due to previous drive failure. What's the probability of me getting back another Zephyr console? Or even a Falcon?

Got mine back today. Well not mine. They sent me a brand spankin' new one. Mine was a late 06 model, my new one is from May 08, and a Falcon. Sweet. No sign of the controller or game they promised.

Lucky you. But oh well I think getting a brand new unit from this year vs getting a refurb with controller/game is a better deal.
 
my second 360 just died...it red ringed about 2 weeks ago and when i restarted it, it was fine....i started up the trial version of Braid and it just froze...turned it off then on and the red lights started laughing at me and they didnt go away this time....oh well...it is still somehow under warranty (refurbs only had 90 days i thought?)

im glad they email a shipping label instead of making you wait for the coffin now..
 
I still have the e74 error and one ring of death, and I've been trying to force my Xbox to get 3 rings by doing the towel trick haven't had any luck. It actually worked for a week, but now its at e74 error screen again.

I'm just going to call and tell them I got the 3 rings. In case they ask, what shows up on screen when you have the 3 rings?

Nothing shows up with 3 rings. All you have to do is mention 3 rings and you will get a free fix.

my launch 360 got the E74/1 red light..i called and told them i had the 3 red lights (if they ask about the power brick, tell them the light is green) and i got it fixed for free

Yeah I'm starting to think we really won't see Jasper's being on shelves till atleast December, because MS is going to have to clear out of Falcons for awhile. I'm thinking I should have bit on the $300 elite last night and sold my refurb for $100+ easily.
 
What happened to the Falcon being the solution to all our problems? Now we're waiting for another revision?

Hey i got red rings around a couple months ago. Then when i called them they told me to turn on my 360 and to my surprise the red rings went away. I told the guy and he told me that he would send me a box anyway and to send it in when it happens again since he was saying it would probably only last for a week or two. For some odd reason though it just broke again right now and it been over like 2 months. So i was wondering if its safe for me to just ship it off or should i call them again because i'm not even sure if they would look into my package if i ship since it been a couple months ago.

On the plus side, you can still use the box they sent you and just have them email the new shipping label. That way you can get it out quicker.
 
I think that they follow routes so I doubt you can do that. If it hasn't gone out for delivery yet, you might request that they hold it at the depot though. Then you can pick it up there.

Mine should be delivered to the repair center today.

I just sent mine off today. I didn't get the red ring again. My drive stopped reading disc. After it made a terrible grinding sound.

The same exact thing happened to me. The noise scared the crap out of me. I thought it was going to destroy the disc. They just got mine at the repair center yesterday.

Same here I figured the disc was going to be broken,but it wasn't. It was weird though It worked great until it did that one day. Was yours a refurb that you got back that did that as well? Mine lasted just a little over a month.

Nope. Was a new Elite I had less than a year. It was working perfectly fine, and then 2 minutes into Spectral Force it makes that loud grinding noise. Then it wouldn't read any discs at all.
