Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-06-08
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

The last Star Wars trilogy would've been better if they hadn't switched directors for each movie.

I like Rian Johnson. Knives Out is easily the best mystery movie of the past 50 years. Abrams also created some of the best Star Trek movies, and he clearly has a knack for action/sci-fi directing. But the idiots at Disney created the worst possible scenario by letting Johnson set up his own interpretation in 8, then giving it back to Abrams. Neither director was able to realize their vision.

Wasn’t it a 3rd director for the last one? And he quit or was replaced and they brought Abraham back?

On its own... it’s passable. As part of the whole franchise, not so much. Who would have believed that the 2nd trilogy was as a whole better than the last trilogy (for myself and many others, still hate jar-jar though. Granted the cgi better in the last 3)

Clearly my sacrifice to Bloomy worked
Sacrifices to Bloomy bring Gears skins and new Forza cars, not Mass Effect dlc

I won't go into detail but there is some major new story content in FFVII Remake to spoil, outside the discussion of normal 20 year old spoiler.

A more straight remake like Resident Evil 2 fits your point better.
Finished Final Fantasy 7 Remake a couple days ago and loved every minute of it. It hit every nostalgic note and got me to tear up many times. It just may be Square Enix's best Final Fantasy game ever. My first playthrough clocked in at 60 hours. With the new story elements, I took a day to process everything. It all clicked right away but I had to wrap my head around all the tiny details. I'm going to go insane waiting for others to play/finish the game because the discussions are like when each episode of Game of Thrones Season 6 came out, or speculating what Avengers: Endgame would be through the trailers. It's that level of hype for the fans.

Yeah I was not so lucky. I should just buy shitty achievement padding games from now. When I buy an actual game I end up eating shit.
Was Inquisitor really that bad in your opinion? For $10? If you didn't play it much you might still be able to request a refund. Maybe you could just have support take your license away so you don't have that stain on your account.

Re:Star Wars
The guy made it this long without spoilers, don't ruin any chance of enjoyment for him. My brother and his kids liked it.

Which makes them crazy, because it was a nonsensical pile of crap. They spent half the run time back tracking on "mistakes" from Last Jedi, and the rest of the runtime bouncing from planet to planet to get the thing to lead them to the thing to get the thing.

OG SW had multiple directors, but it still had a cohesive creative vision because Lucas was heavily involved and only Kasdan was hired to rework Empire and Return. New Trilogy could have worked, but JJ is a much better director than writer and his mystery box schtick only works as a setup not conclusion. They needed someone to provide an outline for the trilogy, a good writer to "yes and" what JJ started, keep RJ from answering every audience expectation and previous setup with "who cares", and unite the trilogy in the final movie into a satisfying story. Instead they completely wasted their potential and likely stunted the careers of half a dozen fine actors. Adam Driver will be fine, but I think Daisy Ridley will have to deal with a lot of audience backlash for awhile.

In the words of David Allen Grier and Damon Wayans, *snap* *snap* Hated It! I liked all the rest of the new Star Wars, they weren't perfect but they were fun. Rise of Trashpacker was just depressing.

On a positive note, Midnight Gospel on Netflix was amazing. I think it was brilliant to have the animation telling it's own bizarre visual story. By forcing you to pay attention to follow that story, it helps keep you engaged in the podcast like discussions going on between Trussel and his guests. That episode about buddhism and the soul prison was one of the greatest things I've ever seen. It's just a silly little show made by a psychedelic comedian, but I'm definitely going to watch it again and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the best aspects of "spirituality."

I haven't been playing many video games lately, but since they're on sale I'll once again recommend any of the Souls series. If the difficulty intimidates you, just know that you can co-op through like 90% of the whole series and there's still a decently active community tab to find help. The difficulty isn't nearly as bad as its hyped up to be anyways. I think of it like real time turn based combat. The enemies and especially bosses are much stronger than you, but they always have a windup and provide openings to counter attack. You have to get a feel for what parts of your dodge are invulnerable, which direction to dodge to land in a safe position, when it's safe to get aggressive, and not to get greedy trying to end the fight on the first opportunity.

The worlds and lore are incredibly deep if you want to dive into them, but very little is forced on you if you just want to hack and slash your way through. Starting classes are just initial stat allocation and starting gear, you have the option to progress however you'd like. Character progression is slow, but there are numerous build options for armor weight, weapon speed, magical abilities, and playstyle. Nothing beats the sense of accomplishment when you get the hang of the mechanics, learn a bosses patterns and weaknesses, and finally take them down. You can also learn how to time parries, spell casting, or giant buster sword swings and make an absolute joke out of end game and ng+ bosses. All the games were built with multiplayer in mind, so don't feel bad if you have to look up strategies or where to go on a wiki. When they were more populated, player notes and bloodstains could provide a lot of that guidance in game.

Dark Souls Remastered has the best interconnected world, but the mechanics are pretty stiff and PvP will likely frustrate you because the people still doing it have the timings mastered and will chain backstab you or one shot you with magic. The weapon upgrade progression is needlessly obscure and basically requires a chart to follow. The remaster also doesn't address the final, rushed areas of the game that feel incomplete. DS is probably the most satisfying to beat and introduces characters who would go on to be mainstays in the series. Ornstein and Smough is quite possibly the best boss fight in the whole series.

Dark Souls 2 throws a lot of hordes at you to challenge players who co-oped or plinked at everything in DS with a bow. The length is overly padded and clearly has a ton of boss fights just to advertise how big the game is. The animations and movement feel a little stiffer than DSR. Coop/pvp is gated by total experience earned including lost exp from dying repeatedly and exp spent on consumables and upgrades. It's also arguably the easiest since you can easily afford consumable healing items. That said, it has the most variety in overpowered builds that come "online" earlier in the game. Most players prefer the PvP for that reason, especially with magic that isn't just one shot nukes nor as weak as DS3. I would recommend it to players who've beat DSR and DS3 looking for more content and a challenge.

Dark Souls 3 has the most fluid movement and multiplayer. It suffers from a predictable story at that point and what many feel is fan service with returning characters. It doesn't have boss fights as good as O&S, but it also doesn't have anything near as frustrating as the Bed of Chaos from DSR. Weapon upgrades are much easier to understand since upgrade level and elemental damage are separate complimentary paths. Unfortunately, offensive miracles (faith magic) are weak for lore purposes and are downright useless for PvE or PvP. PvP only a handful of pyromancies and sorceries are viable because of slow cast times, poor tracking, and weak damage. Also weapon damage compared to attack speed is heavily weighted in favor of fast mid tier weapons like one handed straight and curved swords. However, as I said at the start the movement and animations are much smoother making the game easier to get the hang of and the multiplayer is less finicky if you're trying to co-op with a friend. It easily sports the most boss fights in the top twenty of the whole series, with many arguing that the Unnamed King, Dancer of Boreal Valley, Soul of Cinder, Lorian twins, and Slave Knight Gael being the very best of the best.

TLDR; If you haven't played any, I'd start with DSR or DS3 depending on how forgiving you are of a ten year old game and if you'd rather play a more polished game with a couple friends.

It has nothing to do with the quality of the game. Just a complaint that buying good games seems like a bad idea with GamePass and GWG. I bought the Imperium edition anyway which was a good deal for the DLC. My list of backlog games coming to either service continues to grow so I don't know why I keep buying new games. Nothing more.

The movie also dialed in to some politics, which is not why people go see mystery movies? Rian does this with all his current movies now.
What is this complaint? All pieces of media dial in to some politics. However people don't mention the one's they agree with or reinforces the status quo as being political.

Yup, yup, yup.

I think people are really just noticing it for the first time or just vehemelty disagree with the politcs like you said.

I read alot of comic books and going back to 60/70s/80's Marvel stuff, it surprised me they had a ton of stuff that would be considered 'SJW' and liberal pandering, which is a huge complaint about Marvel comics today and they need to 'get away from injecting politics and going back to good stories'.

Yes, everything is political, and, therefore, nothing is political. Are we arguing semantics now?

The Times, New York Times, Yahoo News, etc, all did pieces on the politics of Knives Out. That's was about sixty seconds of searching.

So let me amend my statement from it "dialed in to some politics" to "it is a 'mystery' movie more memorable for its politics than screenplay, which was written in less than six months (quoted from Rian)"

But really, the movie was instantly discredited to me in theaters even at the very beginning with the death. It was so painfully obvious that Rian was trying so hard to make Marta look like a freaking hero when all she did was kill an old man. (No spoilers, first ten minutes of movie) It's honestly like a plot a 12-year-old could come up with, but here we have the writer of such esteemed media such as completely-logical Looper and everyone's favorite The Last Jedi.

I do apologize. I have very strong opinions when it comes to murder mysteries. It has been my favorite genre since I was old enough to watch Scooby-Doo. My harshness towards Knives Out and its fans is only a sadness within me, knowing that many people think that trite, hamfisted writing is good mystery, and they won't ever read something from Doyle or PD James. Hell, when people read And Then There Were None in grade/high school, they don't even understand it. So I guess it has to be dumbed down a little to achieve the high-grossing status.

Here’s my gripe with the sequel trilogy: there was no one in charge of the project as a complete narrative, and it ignored many of the “rules of the universe” established in the first six movies.

From a narrative standpoint, the constant changing of directors and writers looks bad on its own, as seen by how Johnson tried to retcon everything Abrams did, then Abrams returning the favor. Compare this to The Mandalorian or The Clone Wars. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, respectively, laid out a solid story they wanted to tell in their shows, and both made something that told a complete story. I hope that Disney realizes this and makes one of them the equivalent to Marvel’s Kevin Feige.

As for the Star Wars universe itself, Rey goes from saying “I thought the Jedi were a myth” to mind tricking stormtroopers in an incredibly short amount of time. Compare this to Luke, who goes from learning about the Force in A New Hope to struggling to force-pull his lightsaber in the wampa’s den at the start of Empire. Compare this to the training we see Jedi receiving one the prequel trilogy. Details like this made the sequel trilogy feel more like weak fan fiction than actual Star Wars canon.

Finished it within 1 day. This one was much easier for me than the last time I did it. Last time I had "Look, an achievement for dying" (17 letters) as my phrase. This time it was
Sunset Overdrive
(10 letters).

Well I didn't have much issue with anything else you said, despite me really enjoying Knives Out; because it's your opinion and you admittedly have strong opinions to murder mysteries due to your in-depth experience into murder mystery stories. As a piece of original storytelling in today's saturation of remakes, reboots, and sequels, I thought it was a pretty engaging piece of cinema and why it stood out amidst the rest.

I'm still working through the letters I need, but I know what my phrase is. It was confusing because I didn't realize it had roman numerals in it until I figured out some of the other words.

Last time my phrase was "In the end, our choices make us", which is definitely not the most famous quote from Bioshock.

I hated Episode IX so much, it made me like VII and VIII less. Glad to know someone, somewhere enjoyed it so it wasn't a total waste.

On topic - games are keeping me sane during quarantine and will probably try to play Deliver Us the Moon this week before starting FF7 this weekend. Game Pass continues to be the best option in gaming, with the PC side built in I have been tempted to buy a gaming PC. The new Asus G14 even lists Game Pass on the official web page, which is a pretty big deal.

Perhaps there is someone trying to handle the narrative, and they aren't as good (as they think they are) or it needs to be a bit more collaborative. A big difference between the original and prequel trilogies, where others had some influence on the direction of the OT, but it seemed no one really questioned Lucas on things in the PT.

I figured out my TA challenge after a couple letters, just a matter of figuring out which achievements to pop to complete it.

The issue with politics in movies today is that it’s clearly prioritized over story. That’s why it’s usually injected into already existing franchises, there’s no creativity to come up with something original.

Plus, nobody wants to be preached at by a millionaire who’s only contribution to society is that they occasionally pretend to be someone else.

Regardless of what the politics are, great storytelling and character development and arcs must always be the priority. There are plenty of pieces of media where I don't agree with the politics/themes involved but can admit the execution of it's storytelling and characters were well done.

There's nothing wrong with an actor expressing their political views. Feel free to agree/disagree with them or support/don't support them.

Agreed on both accounts with one caveat, actors shouldn’t be letting their personal political beliefs impact how they portray a character, but that’s commonplace now.

Also hate how every awards speech is a political rant. It’s like have the smallest amount of self awareness that there’s nothing that qualifies you to lecture anyone on politics.

But on the flip side that lack of self awareness led to the cringetastic singing of imagine lol, which was gold

Using bigger platforms to make political statements have historically been powerful. Depending on what the political statement is, who says it, and how it's executed determines the reception of it ranging from cringeworthy to awesome. Yes that lack of self awareness that led to the singing of Imagine was more in the cringeworthy range. LOL

There’s definitely a happy medium to be found. The problem with the PT was the fact no one questioned Lucas. Lucas was left to his own devices and while the overall story was solid, there were plenty of moments where he needed a repeat of Harrison Ford’s famous quote from the set of A New Hope; “You can write this shit, but you can’t say it!”. Basically all of Attack of the Clones needed that. It was a poorly executed movie that at least had a coherent plot with episodes 1 and 3.

If someone competent was really in charge of the ST, you wouldn’t have had two movies trying to retcon what the last one did. Marvel did a great job telling a story over 12 years and 20+ films, all with different directors and writers, thanks to Kevin Feige. The ST couldn’t manage that over 3 films.

Finished mine quick, it was "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain." Finding a 'V' achievement was the only semi-challenging thing.

What are we on now for the Assassin's Creed reveal, hour 6? :) Oh well, I'm working from home anyway. May as well listen to Jorraptor shoot the breeze on stream all day long.

Deliver Us The Moon was promising until I quit, came back, and was stuck. Apparently it's a common glitch as well.

Being vague, not that this is spoilery at all. You travel somewhere on a monorail. After the monorail stops, KEEP fuck ING PLAYING. I don't know when or where it becomes safe, but stopping there locks you inside the monorail with no way to exit.

That sucks, glad I avoided it because it’s a great game, but I would have rage quit on something like that lol

I did rage quit.

Thought I was missing a puzzle piece somewhere, somehow, despite it being kinda clear that there was a door outside the monorail that was opening and closing as I walked by. Looked up two different playthroughs showing people just walking straight out without doing anything first and figured out I was just stuck because of the game saving there.

Immediately deleted the game.

Well, at least I'll finally be able to sit down and play Overlord 2. Loved the first one 10 years ago (holy snarks, I'm old). Also, my wife has been asking about the Overlord games recently, so I know she'll be pleasantly surprised too.
I loved the first one. Being evil never felt so good

Sorry it happened to you, but thanks for the heads-up. I was just watching the ID@Xbox Showcase on Mixer and this was one of the two games they showed. Looked fun enough to try, and now I'll BOLO for this monorail trap.

Oddly enough that was an exact glitch in the game SOMA... maybe the 3rd Mission and I guess I wasn't Krusty. Seems like it was since patched

Achievement tracking/unlocking for anyone else not working (again) ?
Yeah there are wonky things going down right now. All my games are currently showing 0 Gamerscore and had a couple achievements not pop.

Just what the internet needs. Another place to bitch about how a movie wasn’t everything you wanted it to be. Especially Star Wars. Shut it down cheapy, this place is cashed.
What's funny is the last 1-2 hours worth of posts were only about games. Complaining about topics brings them back up.

I am disturbed by the amount of movie discussion posts that are not using a #halo tag though.

Uhhhh, I wanted to thank those that brought out switching the sprint off of L1 and it has made games like Borderlands so much better. I'll find those folks to thank...

If you get this glitch you better hope you have a damn good monorail conductor.

See, I think you are upset because of a dislike of Rian Johnson and his politics. If his politics matched yours, like they do mine, then you wouldn't have any need to bring up the fact that politics were involved. And this is the core gripe that everyone has with him, that their politics don't match his, thus using the political themes as justification for not liking the movie as much. What's so politically egregious about having a Hispanic caretaker with an illegal parent, anyway? Does that not happen in the America you're from?

The same thing can be said about Episode 8. I've seen dozens of Youtube videos of insecure men whining about the feminism in the movie, which I can only imagine stems from Holdo, Rey, and Leia all being fucking badasses. People also disliked the Canto Bight war profiteering adventure, which admittedly didn't amount to much, but involved an explanation behind the reason why The First Order was so well-equipped. And that reason perfectly coincides with the war profiteering introduced in Episode 2, when Obi-Wan visits Kamino and meets the cloners. Are there badass women in positions of power and war profiteers in reality? Yes, making it relatable content.

Btw, I've seen Gosford Park. It's not as good as Knives Out. I also enjoyed Daniel Craig's southern accent. It all depends on how angry you are at things you shouldn't let bother you, apparently.

I get why Last Jedi was so divisive, but the only thing a I really hate in that movie is the casino detour. I have minor complaints about some other details but nothing that kills the movie for me. IX just has a few to many huge ass pulls, especially the Palpatine stuff, that clearly should have been set up sooner or would have been in VIII if they hadn't changed course with the directors. The whole point of the throwing out the old Legends stuff was to be able to more easily tie all output together while not being tied to 30 years of sprawling continuity, but I don't think they even tried to connect that much into anything except a book that came out really close to the movie.

I've always felt the ancillary stuff for Star Wars has stronger content then the movies made past the OT. Not everything is a banger but there have been great games, books, comics, and shows over the years, which is why this EA contract has been so trash. One good game in 7 years is a joke with the amount of talented studios they had when the contract was signed.

Haven't watched the new season of Clone Wars, but that series, Mandalorian, and (to a lesser degree) Rebels have been pretty solid output in the past decade. They should just put Dave Filoni in charge of some movies at this point.

I think it's unfair to paint a broad brush about someone's views and assume they are opposed to a movie because the politics don't line up. I personally hate when any movie, show, game, etc. makes me feel like it's pushing an agenda regardless of it being conservative, liberal, etc. There's too much agenda pushing from reality, social media, the news, etc. and I want to escape that. I may be of one political persuasion, but i'm not happy when I feel like my point of view is being pushed across to myself and the audience on some action movie, suspense, or romantic comedy. If I want to watch stuff that supports my politics and world views and pushes agendas, I can specifically find that content elsewhere. Maybe i'm unique.
