• You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
• Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
  On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.

What is this?

Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :

1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.

The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

Eh ignorant statement from that source. PC components supporting pcie 4.0 have been on the market for 10 months now. The fact that there are no current drives that maximize pcie 4.0 bandwidth is something that equally affects console and pc tech.

PS5 has better SSD support, but can't use external HHD unless faster M2 brand.

So m2 is not a brand, it's a "form factor" or size. m2 drives can also be either sata or nvme. In the case of the ps5, it looks like it expands with nvme drives, which is what I would want. The best deals on a solid 1tb nvme drive have been around $100, and that's not much different than sata. So expandable nvme is absolutely the right call.

That said, if neither console supports external usb storage it will be a massive failure. I'll probably purchase a new graphics card in the fall and wait 1-2 years on the consoles, perhaps for the inevitable newer revisions.

True, but proprietary stuff like this is always more expensive, Sony already learned that with the Vita's memory cards, which really hurt early adopters and sales in general. It's not quite the same thing knowing that there's internal storage (unlike the Vita) but Microsoft messaging about USB drives but ONLY for backwards compatible content has already confused a ton of people. Lots of retorts online for people who didn't read closely.

That kind of stuff is fine for PC master race types, but the appeal of consoles has always been the simplicity of functionality. Sony at least including an example bay drive for internal storage and not using proprietary storage means those costs will eventually come down.

Remember when Microsoft refused to use USB storage on the 360 despite it being technically fine and charged $150 for a proprietary $250GB HDD? They even banned people who modded the casing to hold larger drives.

I'm hoping I'm wrong but it sure sounds like that will be the case again.

I still think they will be more expensive on the MS side because of like you said proprietary reasons, but since they literally don't even make a consumer grade drive at the moment that can work with the different architecture that PS5 is using I wonder how big the cost difference is actually going to be. Prices for drives that are top of the line but not even fast enough for PS5 right now go for $199 1TB and $399 for 2TB. Prices for older SSD drives have already begun to climb very high from some almost decent lows before the holidays. MS also eventually got much more sensible about their external HD pricing in the 360 era, so I'd think they'd at least be sensitive to it. Then again they aren't afraid to sell a $180 controller if they think they have an audience for it, and it seems they do.

No mentions of being able to use the original discs from what I have seen. Which kind of makes sense, since this generation was basically all about downloading the entire game from the disc to the console, and just using the disc as DRM for proof of ownership. To stop people from renting tons of disc games, and saving digital versions to their consoles without paying for them. Though, I would like to at least have the option of putting in my old discs, having them recognized, and then being given the option to download a digital copy when the PS5 and Series X come out. Not all of my PS4 and Xbox One games are digital, and even the ones that are digital aren't saved to a portable hard drive.

Top 100 games is concerning. Main reason why I’d get a PS5 is if it has PS2/PS3 BC and if PS4 is only getting top 100 games to start, that doesn’t bode well for the older catalog. Just my 2 cents but we’ll see.

The main difference will be that, in 2-3 years, costs will come down as those faster drives become standard and there is greater demand via install base. The idea that you can buy a 512gb microSD card for less than $100 was unthinkable 3 years ago, but between phones and the Switch, production volume goes up and cost slowly goes down. Early adopters will eat the cost on the PS5, but proprietary stuff almost never sees that arc of going down over time.

Well Xbox One X is already done. They keep showing it off in YouTube videos. It sounds like PS5 is still in the planning stages from the video that we got this morning. Microsoft has the console and new controller and games out in the wild for YouTubers and game reviewers to preview and show off.

Thankfully, MS already had a dedicated BC team that spent a lot of time learning how to make it work and just moved them to focus on the new hardware. They said a year ago they suspended additions to the program to ensure 100% compatibility, which now sounds like it will give them an advantage.

The impression I got about the "100 PS4 games" was not that only 100 games will be supported. They spot checked 100 games, and most of them worked. So it would be a reasonable assumption to extrapolate that to the rest of the PS4 library and expect that most games will work. But it's not a guarantee.

Far cry from Series X's commitment to 100% compatibility for any game that plays on Xbox One. And it's SUPER disappointing that they don't even seem to be aiming for any BC with PlayStation 1, 2, and 3 games.

These will be pretty interesting to compare at launch. They are similar, but MS has gone a bit heavier on CPU/GPU horsepower whereas Sony chose to focus on storage speed and 3D audio. Both are far more powerful than what came before so I have no doubt they will both be able to offer some great game experiences. The PS5 form factor remains a mystery at this point.

I am concerned that Sony is getting left behind in the area of software and services, with everything that MS has invested in backwards compatibility, Game Pass Ultimate, and standardized APIs such as DXR.

I imagine that their next console will probably have graphics and performance similar to the PS4 Pro, or the Xbox One X. Since they always seem to be about a generation behind in specs, but they are usually just powerful enough to have passable ports of games being released to the more powerful consoles and PC. I would personally like to see them keep supporting the Switch as a handheld, when they release a new Nintendo console. As the life of a Nintendo handheld seems to be double that of their standard home consoles. I know Nintendo keeps denying a Switch Pro, but as we have seen in the past, Nintendo is always remaking and powering up it's handhelds. And, since they removed features to make the lite, it might be interesting to see if they would add more things to a pro version.

It's just because you're wrong with both your equation of the 3DS to the N64 and the Switch to the Wii. It's like you've never even played any of those consoles. Can you also explain how the DS has ports of N64 games, if the 3DS is more powerful and is the same, "graphics and performance wise," according to you?

Asked my boss and she said it's "just in case" for now, but all the emails were sent at the same time and not everyone got them, so I think I'm at least on the list of people whose jobs can be done remotely. Watching this Cerny talk about PS5 and it's way too technical, surprised they didn't put something more dumbed down out. Going to Digital Foundry should really be their move like MS does now. Overall it sounds like it's not as powerful as the Series X and I don't see what the big deal is that Schrier was talking about before. Now he says he thinks they botched the message and that the custom design of the SSD is much more important than it reads in the video.

We don't know how PS5 will handle BC (as there isn't a precedent yet) but I think we can expect Xbox to handle discs from any previous generation as a license to play/download the game.

FYI - This method allows people to rent games in order to install them, but they would still need the disc (or a digital license of some sort) to play the game so there is no danger of people renting games and playing them for free afterwards.
